Finally, a guide to integrating Houdini into blender! I love both these softwares and it pained me that trying to integrate the two was so hard. Houdini is the undisputed king when it comes to particle and volumetric effects and now we can use that power in blender. Thanks!
Jep that was a relief when the experimental branch for vdb import was released
fucking hell this is a good tutorial!
Blew my mind man. Really. I love that you use non commercial Houdini for it as well! I would like to see more these blender integrations!
I'm a blenderer just learning Houdini as well!

Good Job man, I need more tutorials between blender and Houdini. Thanks
Man, thanks for sharing that way of making the explosion in houdini and than render
it in blender !! My favourite tut so far :) Keep up the great work !! xD
Thanks for the feedback! :D
this is a whole new level to open a new way to create vfx in Blender!
I've just subscribed. Hope you make more tutorials with these software. I'm just learning blender and houdini. Thanks!
i really apreciate your help with dowloanding this software
this is an under rated video!!
thank you sooo much man
hat is better than free? Free x2. Thank you for showing us how to use H with B. Beautiful!!!!
Anyone from cgmatter ?

Very cool. I did search a way to do this couple years ago, but never found this volume importer. Really, really cool, thanks!
FINALLY a use for Houdini. Always see Houdini video like: "How the hell do they get that result??"
And you never know what to do after you get a result out of Houdini. Like you simulate an explosion, then what?
@@ParallaxDimensions-UA-camYT Yeah exactly. Most tutorials for Houdini are garbage that's why it's so hard to learn it.
@@Kamcio44 Indie-Pixel is really good but he covers more game dev and procedural modeling than vfx
The best tutorials about volumes, fluids and rigids in my opinion are the applied Houdini series on CGCircuit. The tutor explains all steps to get nice results www.cgcircuit.com/browsepage.php?&search=applied
Thank you so much! You're the first to ever do this and it looks amazing. 2 questions. Are you still releasing that VFX tutorial? And what's the song at the end, custom?
Firstly, yes I will release the vfx tut but probably with a Houdini explosion and the song is called Jukebox from the UA-cam library.
@@JonathanKron Thanks again, cheers!
You are the best, many thanks
This looks great! Nice tutorial! :)
Thanks :D
wow its looks very nice :0
thank you so much dude you're a god
(evil mad scientist voice)I CALL IT!!!!!! BLEEEEEENDIIII !!! Sorry couldn't help myself.
I have one problem. Each time I export it gets stuck on “evaluating python”. I’ve installed the latest nividia Drivers and rebooted.
Can I do the same using Water Tank as well?
Hey jonathan. I am trying to learn houdini and following the houdini official youtube channel intro tutorial. Will you please tell me more youtube channel to learn houdini better?
I linked a series in the description which is in my opinion the best way to learn Houdini
This video is very good, but I wonder if you will consider making the special effects scene of the fire coming down from the sky?
THANK YOU SO MUCH, MUCH LOVE ❤
Thank you.
Oh wow, I would have needed this feature just a month ago for the project I was working on; we ended up using Blender's inbuilt smoke sim, and it looked meh. That looks like a game changer!
That explosion is so sexy omg
can we get that sim download?
more from these tutorials please !!!
Fantastic, what was sim cache size n time?
Don't know the exact numbers but cache size was around 5-10 gigs and 40 frames took ca 2 hours to bake
when i add a converttovdb node my fire becomes invisible and when i export it as vdb and import it in other software there is also nothing :/
You can only export from Houdini in 720p in the free version right?
Also, how would you name that explosion collide and interact with other objects? Is that something you can do in blender or do you have to do that in Houdini before transferring to blender
You can only render in 720p in the Houdini free version but the vdb export isn't limited. Also the naming doesn't really matter. You should of course always organize your scenes but if you name them in Houdini or just the fbx file is not that important.
Jonathan Kron oh wow didn’t know the vfb file was unlimited! What a loophole hahaha
And I’m talking about the explosion intersecting with other objects. Is there a way to get the vdb file to move around rocks or a car, the ground etc?
Be mindful though that the Apprentice edition EULA prohibits commercial use. The Indie version is only like $269/yr and well worth it as long as you don’t go over $100K/yr with it anywhere in your pipeline.
I wonder if you can use this workflow for commercial purposes? Apparently, the final render is done in Blender, Houdini (free version) is used to generate the VDB, so what license are we following in this process? Nice tutorial btw!
Technically you are not allowed to use this explosion in any commercial product. sorry
Hi Jonathan, nice and simple explained video. 👍
If you could highlight your mouse it would make it more easy to find it and follow your tutorials on smaller displays like phones easier
Wow, would this be possible with Houdini Fluid Sims too?
How did you cache everyrthing out so quickly? I've got 32 GBs of ram and an i7 8th gen but it took me 50 minutes to cache out 50 frames. I was wondering if there is a way to optimize this or speed it up? Thanks.
You could always reduce the voxel size. But I think your caching speed is normal. Smoke sims just take some time
@@JonathanKronthank you so much for the quick and insightful reply. I will experiment to find a balance between quality and time. Just out of curiosity, how much did yours take to cache?
@@emirthecet caching sims and exporting them is best done overnight. As Johnathan says, that’s just nature of the beast when it comes to smoke and fluid sims. It takes a ton of time.
Hey Jonathan can you make a tutorial about taking a maximo character and walk animation(from maximo), repeating the animation(so they walk further than the default animation), exporting that fbx correctly and importing to Houdini? I keep trying everything but when i import it, its just the first pose in the animation and it slides across the floor. I downloaded an in place walk, parented that to an empty in blender and animated the empty so the model moves across the space.
Hi, I can do that, but what I would try in your case is to export the animated model as .abc. This bakes the animation to the geometry and you should have no issues importing it.
@@JonathanKron oh okay wow! Thanks! I’ll try that! See this is the stuff I couldn’t fine online or in my case didn’t even know where to start! I was trying the method you showed here and tried to go from there!
what is the name of the background music in the start of the video?
Hello, i'm interested in learning Houdini because of Blender's lake in physics / fire simulations. But i'm wondering something :
What i want for my projects is principally firethrowing effect. When imported in Blender, is it the Houdini simulation totally baked and static, or can it react to Blender physics and being edited a bit still after import ?
I mean, for exemple if i create a static flamethrowing in Houdini and animate it in Blender to go from left to right, do the flames will physically react in consequence or just stay same looking as in Houdini ?
Also can i make them collide on a wall in Blender, or do I need to create this collision effect in Houdini first ? Thanks by advance if you inform me on it!!
I think you must have the colliders in Houdini
I haven’t downloaded Houdini yet but I was wondering if it’s possible to send fluid & RBD sims back to blender for rendering with the apprentice version
No, I don’t think you can do that I tried but I didn’t find any way to export geometry
Hello. I want to export a fire animation to Houdini den blender. However when I come to the volume-import button in the blender and call the vdb files I created, it gives the following error, I write the exact text: (volume ^^firesı
m _0001^^failed to load i lo error: could not get size of file C:\users\msi\videos\VDB sequece \firem_0001.VDB.) this is the error. What should I do about it? It gives this error when exporting from houdını to blender .Have a nice day
Houdini is also amazing for particles and fluid simulations, is it possible to import those into blender with this method or are VDBs limited to smoke and fire?
I haven't looked into these yet. Maybe I will do a video about that in the future. But Blenders water and particle capabilities are pretty good in comparison with smoke/fire
If you have an indie license, you can export alembic for the fluid simulations, but i am not sure about particles.
Wow Nice Thank You
liked.. subbed.
Hi there, thanks for tutorial. Do you need paid license in houdini to export VDB ?
Nope. The only thing you can’t do is sell your renders or sell the VDB files
I've followed the tutorial step by step yet once import my simulation in blender, it looks very blurry and low res (Volumetric Tile Size set on 2px). Any ideas?
Is it also blurry in cycles or is it a pure eevee problem? If so try setting the volumetric samples to 128 or 256, if it's generally blurry you should export your sim with a lower voxel size from Houdini even though this will take a while.
@@JonathanKron is blurry in both, I'll decrease the voxel size in Houdini. Oh, and also, can I use this workflow to import other types of simulations such as liquid or smoke? Will the textures translate?
@@JonathanKron hi, it's me again. How do u decrease the voxel size? I've been searching for it, but no luck (I'm a complete beginner)
@@giovannivittorioambrosini6621 Hi, sorry for being unclear. By voxel size I mean division size in Houdini. It's the step right here: ua-cam.com/video/q2bMlsP7LZo/v-deo.html
@@JonathanKron Thank you very much. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 That fixed it
MY GOD.
I get the error: Volume "pyro_cache_0001" failed to load: pyro_cache_0000.vdb not found
which is kind of strange since I only exported the frames 1-30.
I appreciate any kind of support
me too.. go into vdb folder and renam first frame 'pyro_cache_0001' to 'pyro_cache_0000'
it will work
@@ale_dp9 yeah i solved it that way too just rename every file
Hey Jonathan. Can't i import vdb files directly into blender 2.82? Can i export vdb from graphicall build to official blender 2.82?
No, sadly you can't. You can only import vdb files through this new branch into Blender.
I must have done something wrong. My PC is great and u said that it took you 1.5-2h to bake the sim. For me it took 8h to render 44 frames. I copied all ur settings so is there anything else I missed ?
Do you mean bake or render? And maybe I was also wrong with the time and it took a little longer (I didn't watch to time specifically ) but it definitely didn't take that long. What are your specs?
@@JonathanKron I mean the bake. I have an r9 3900x and RTX 2070. The only problem I can see is my RAM. I only have 16GB and Houdini was using all of it while baking. Even my mouse was lagging while it was baking which never happens for me.
@@Kamcio44 hm well then it's just how it is. Houdini is pretty heavy on your hardware
I have the same issue (but even lower specs)
@@giovannigiorgi69420 I've 12 GB ram and it is stuck at 14 frame for more than an hour, is there any solution for fast rendering in houdini?
I am facing a problem with houndini, i am not familiar with it tho
When I add the null node the object just dissappears i tried to delete the node and it stays hidden, i tried to follow up the tutorial when it came to selecting the torus a yellow taurus appeared when i hover my mouse over it and then dissappears again, and when I select it, I cant do anything in the 3D viewport, cant move rotate or any thing, nothing appears at all even the domain and the smoke, i restarted my program several times it didn't work either. So please help
Great man.... Can we import Fluids and Fractured Objects from Houdini to blender ?...i tried but object imports as Messed up Animation and polygons
I have never tried it before, maybe in the future I will make a video on that if I can get it to work.
@@JonathanKron Great man.. your best
works gj
Thank you so much, I've wanted to make this for a long time.
*EDIT* it works so fucking well, and the rendering time is soooo low. I'm so hyped right now. For a similar scene like yours it took me about 47 seconds to render a frame in 4k with a gtx 1070 and an i7 (with denoising on about twice as much). The only minus point is, that the baking takes forever and requires much space on your harddrive (500mb for each frame). In comparison with the standart smoke solver, it takes me sth about 20min per frame and the results are far worse than houdini.
Great to hear that it works so well! And yes the baking takes pretty long but it's definitely worth it
@@JonathanKron yeah, I wanted to bake the simulations with houdini for a long time, because the integrated smoke solver of blender just sucks for explosions or fire, but it just wasn't possible to transfer it.
@@aeedits8815 47 seconds for a frame!? I have a gtx 1070 as well and im getting upwards of 7 minutes per frame, rip. Might upgrade my CPU. (150 samples, about half the time for 50 samples,)
can you export a rigged character?
Is this on the free version of houdini
Thank you so much for this. Especially showing us quickly how this integrates with Houdini as not many people probably have experience with it. This is what's missing in every other video on this new feature I have seen so far.
Honestly the explosion Houdini creates looks much, much better than anything I have ever seen in Vanilla Blender without addons like Khaos and the likes.
How long was the baking time in Houdini for this, if I may ask?
The baking is extremely fast compared to Magnaflow. Of course, it still took like 1.5h - 2h for ca 50 frames but the quality is just insane!
@@JonathanKron Thanks! That sounds a lot better to me! Really glad they open Blender up even more to import different file formats.
I know Mantra is slow but... Is Cycles faster with the same quality ? ^^;
What do you mean with Cycles? Do you mean Cycles vs Mantra?
Sorry I am confused 😅
@@JonathanKron yes. I'm just wondering what's the point rendering inside Blender if you make the simulation inside Houdini, so I thought maybe it's faster, hopefully ?
@@tetsuooshima832 Houdini apprentice can only render in 720p and mantra is limited to CPU only
As it currently stands, Mantra is a lot slower than Cycles, even if you compare only the CPU versions. The flipside is that no render engine looks better than Mantra when it comes to explosions, not even Arnold, maybe Renderman gets to the same quality level but at the cost of similar long render-times.
Can all this be done in one software? Can it be done in blender?
Yes. It can. Search for some mantaflow explosion tutorials
It keeps cutting the flames :/
I think you skipped this step 5:21 let me know if it helped
Omg I fucking love you
No homo
