Hope y'all enjoyed the vid! One thing I did want to add that I forgot to mention is that the temperatures I shared are a general guideline. Each turtle species is different and some are more tropical, preferring warmer water, while others are temperate, and prefer cooler water. Be sure to do research on your specific species of turtle before picking an ideal temp to keep the tank at :)
Great video, quick note on your comment re not having to heat your turtle tank if you keep adults, keep in mind some of your viewers are in colder climates and there are species more or less tolerant to lower temperatures. The goal is to create an environment as close to your turtle species' natural habitat as possible. I keep Sliders in a very large tank in the UK, winter temps here can drop the tank water to very low temperatures but not enough obviously for hibernation and so I need to heat the water year round. You are right in that adults can tolerate a wide range of temperatures but I would hesitate to encourage people to force them to do so.
Just wanna mention to be careful with the Aqueon pro series heaters. After a year, some of them can fail and split open, and the toxic material inside can disperse into the tank. In my personal experience as well, mine may have been defective? But it did not keep up with the set temperature. This was using a thermometer to keep an eye on it too. The Eheim Jager heaters are great tho!
I had no idea that adult turtle didn't need heating. If I knew I knew that sooner than that could have saved me about 30-40 dollars and I could've bought some more plants
If you use a canister filter on your turtle tank you can use an external heater (also called an in-line heater). That’s what I use exclusively. It’s pretty easy to setup and removes any change of your turtle damaging the heater. It also gets another piece of equipment out of the tank, which is aesthetically more pleasing, in my opinion. Keep up the great work Turtle Girl - and if you keep your mag-float near the substrate it will prevent your turtle from using it to climb out of your aquarium!
Had a mini heart attack when I noticed Hoku climbing out of his tank before you realized it... I thought this video was going to become "Emergency Cracked Shell Fix" or something lol. It's crazy how much Hoku Houdini tries to escape, my RES couldn't care less about getting out and I definitely took that for granted, it looks like having an escape artist turtle is a little bit scary.
Hello hope you are having a wonderful day, I just recently got a turtle and I fell in love with your channel, do you have any tips or like what’s the process of setting up a heater?
My turtle has been hanging around a lot by the heater laying right on it. I had the temperature set to 74 so i thought maybe the water wasnt warm enough so i bumped it up to 80 degrees. She still keeps laying on it. And she rarely basks now. Is it something to be concerned with?
I am a beginner caring for turtles, but maybe she has a virus or is sick? I read they will stop basking so much when sick and because they're cold-blooded, they need warmth for their immune system, so maybe she is fighting off an infection or virus. How is she doing now that it's a month later?
I just have a quick question and I hope you see this. Do you absolutely need a water heater? Because I don’t have one but I have everything else that you’ve mentioned like UVB/Heat lamp, basking area/basking rock, and thermometers expect mine isn’t going to be full all the way. It’ll be resting on the top of the screened lid, is that’s still okay?
I have baby turtles, they need a good and safe heater. What do you recommend. I had one from Amazon and when I went to go clean the tank I first turned off my filter and right after my heater started smoking and sizzling 😢 thank God my turtles are ok but they are heater less right now cause I don’t want to buy another heater that might do that same thing. PLEASE HELP
Okay I need someone to reply I’m a new turtle owner and my heater isn’t exactly working very well the water temp is at 74.8 and is a hatchling and should I keep his basking light on all night will it be okay to turn it off at night?
I’m a new sub, and I already love the channel!! Also DO A LEOPARD GECKO UPDATE. I have two one is a Tremper Albino and the other is a blizzard (those are the morphs)
I have two glass water heaters I bought none of them work I followed directions which water heater u know actually will work pls tell me my baby red eared slider be swimming in cold 🥶 water
My yellow bellied slider hasnt had a heater in his water, ans the water is pretty chilly but he seems adapted to it. Im wondering if i should i getbone anyway. He is a about 3 inches and in a 30 gal tank. Thanks in advance. Also wondering, his water is pretty shallow, but ive read this breed can be in up to 18 inches. Any suggestions on filling his tank up. His name is Crush btw.
sure! it helps to keep it consistent and can improve your turtle's metabolism. It's not a MUST though, depending on the temp you normally keep your house at
i don't personally trust more well known brands like tetrafauna, i've had bad experiences with them in the past and their stuff is not very good quality.
I have my baby Red eared slider in a pool outdoors, how can I keep his pool warm? I do every Day water changes to keep it warm but maybe theres a better option:=

Hi. I'm having a smelly water issue with my turtle tank. I do weekly water changes. I did my water change this Wednesday by Friday the water started to smell. What might be the problem and how can I fix it?
I needed this video so bad! Thank you Turtle Girl! I put my finger in there and is cold, thermostat says 75. And I see it working, but the water does not feel warm at all. * I would like to send you something in appreciation for you sharing with us. Please? Do you have somewhere where we can send you fan mail?
@@TheTurtleGirl Nice! That is actually great news. It looks like I have been doing good thanks to you my red ear slider hatchling is very happy and growing strong.

Hi! Is it fine to keep my turtle tank near the radiator? Could it cause damage to the water or the aquarium glass? I'm trying to find a good spot for my turtle in the house.
Keeping it right next to the radiator could cause it to overheat when the radiator is on. It also won't be on all the time so the temperatures will be very inconsistent. Best to just buy a heater and play it safe.
generally you don't use heat pads with tanks that are holding water because unless you're running a thermostat you can't really control the temperatures it warms it to...at least that's what I've heard. Does the temp stay consistent for you? I'm quite curious :)
@@TheTurtleGirl hello turtle girl I actually have a thermostat and the heating pad has low medium and high I let it get warm on medium than I just switch it low he seems to be very happy
I guess I got lucky. I estimate my turtle is around 8-10+ years old. I had it for 4-5 years. I always kept the water at room temperature and I noticed it hibernated in the water so I dont bother it.
I am totally lost, my son made honor roll and I went to the pet store , I bought him a 40 gallon tank , the turtle and now I’m scared out of my mind because they said I didn’t need a heater ? It is some type of African sideneck
Most turtles can tolerate room temp for a while, I wouldn't freak out too much. What I would get is a filter if you don't have one as well as a basking area with proper lighting, as those are arguably more important.

A heater will be the best and most consistent way to keep the water warm.
I keep my uvb light on from 6am till 7 pm. How long should I keep the basking light on?during the cold weather I keep it on all the time. Should not?
The hours of sunlight should determine your photoperiod (fancy word for when the lights are on lol) Usually for me it is anywhere between 10-12 hours.
