Dehatattva is probably the central theme of the baul philosophy, silhouetting the aphoristic idea that states “whatever is in the universe, is in the receptacle (the body)”. The practitioners believe that the body is the microcosm of the universe and because it has everything in it, all worship should be focused around it. There is an amount of secrecy in which the bauls shroud their objectives and the esoteric rituals related to their ‘Sadhana’ by using their own terminology assimilating influences from Hindu, Sufi, Baishnab and Buddhist ascetics. The songs are coded with such riddles through imagery based on very regular, daily activities like fishing, farming, sailing etc. It is usually very difficult for a layman to make sense of what they say without making conscious efforts.
This song talks about the reversal of the cosmic process, the return to the ‘Sahaj’ state - the earliest condition of non-duality that existed before creation, which is the objective of Baul Sadhana. For the efforts to be successful, it is necessary to control the six enemies (lust, anger, greed, infatuation, vanity and envy) much like the cardinal sins as noticed in Christianity as well as in the Hindu Dharma Shashtras. The song uses a vivid imagery of life as a battlefield and the sins as the demons one needs to fight to achieve the state of non-duality - the active form of the supreme or simply Sahaj Manush.
