    Intro:
    Hey everybody, it's Josh here
    This video is going to be a little bit different.
    I decided to enroll in WGU's CS program, and thought I'd share my plans--I figured it might help anyone interested in doing the same thing, or perhaps give an idea of what might be possible.
    If you already know me and you're wondering why I'm getting another degree, there is a cool program PhD program at Dakota state university that I want to apply to and it requires an undergrad in CS.
    I really want to make myself as competitive as possible and apply to the program, plus I'm a pretty big fan of coding and CS concepts in general, so I'm pretty excited in general.
    Goal:
    So my main goal of this endeavor is to spend as little time as possible actually registered and trying to complete classes.
    What I mean by this, is I don't want to register and then spend 2 months trying to complete calculus.
    I'll dive into the details here in a minute, but the idea is, I'm going to "pre-game" and prepare myself as much as possible, register for the program, and try to complete it as fast as humanly possible.
    I'm certain I'll be able to finish within 6 months of registering, but I'm hoping to finish much faster than that!
    Spreadsheet / Word Doc:
    So this is a spreadsheet i've prepared.
    My transcripts haven't been evaluated yet, but this is what I kind of suspect to see based on the degrees and certs I currently have.
    Explain Easy/Medium/Hard
    Explain Preparation
    Explain Primer Sheet
    Calculus is probably the hardest thing on here
    My approach for this is I'm going to review a bit on Khan Academy and then I'm going to take the Calculus course via straighterline and transfer it into WGU. (b-roll)
    There are a few reasons for this
    Only the final exam is proctored,
    Based on the scoring, if you get full credit before taking the final, it looks like you can do very poorly (even 0) on the final and still pass
    SL allows for the use of "better" calculators beyond the standard TI-84 and the final is open book with notes
    Reddit post: / straighterline_calculu...

    Thank you so much for doing this. I dropped out of college 12 years ago. I enrolled at ASU during covid to finally finish my CS degree, but the timeline seemed stupid and the cost was outrageous. Why would I pay ~$50,000 to prove that I know how to program? Your youtube channel has given me hope that I can actually complete this in a reasonable amount of time, for a reasonable cost. And not only that, you've shown useful resources to brush up on calculus (took 1, 2, and 3 previously -- but I know my retention is poor at this point).
    I don't know why you popped up in my youtube feed... but I'm incredibly glad that you did.

    This is interesting. I actually took on the same pre-gaming approach when doing my WGU master's degree. I didn't realize others undertook this strategy too (I made a UA-cam Channel sharing my accelerated journey as well). This makes me think that some, or many, WGU learners are more strategic in their learning, in comparison to other post secondary students. Not sure if it's the type of learners or the setup of WGU that fosters for this strategic approach, or maybe a fusion of both. In your recent video, you talked about non-WGU students questioning the legitimacy of the school and, I think you're right in that maybe they don't have the strategic and systematic mindset and drive needed to get their schooling done as efficiently as possible.

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  3 роки тому +3

      That's dope! And yeah, I'm wondering if maybe they don't think about it or don't take the time to look into it. Congrats on the master's. Did you find it way easier than your undergrad?

    • @lifebyjustin
      @lifebyjustin 3 роки тому +1

      @@JoshMadakor Thanks! And I actually did a previous master's degree and I found WGUs masters easier in some easy and more difficult in others. I found it easier in that the content was more relatable and less abstract, but more difficult in that I had to do 31 performance assessments (papers + presentations) which got a draining overtime. But overall, I loved WGU. Hope you like it too!

    Your channel gonna help me finally achieve my dreams at a low cost and at my pace. This idea is genius. So basically learn for free and when I pay for the course I should be able to breeze through in 6 months God willing. Especially them websites where I can get my class credits for a great discount. That website you mentioned Saylor is GOLD!!!! Most of the classes I need to take (I have no prior college credits) are free. So I’ll bust my brain on them now but when it’s time to start the course I’m in and out. It’s still hard to believe I can have my bachelors in less than a year. Hopefully my masters in 2. I would love to work as a cloud engineer and later down the line cloud architect so I know that a CS degree would do me better.

      Sounds like a solid plan! CS degree is a pain in the ass, but it's really useful to have on your resume. Cloud is a nice field to go into. I feel it's relatively straight forward to get into. There are a lot of cloud support engineer jobs with Microsoft, Amazon, and other orgs, both full-time and as a vendor, which aren't TOO hard to obtain, with some education/certs/self-made exp. Best of luck :)

      Hey, thanks for watching and thanks for the questions:
      >In the green column, under complete, are you putting the date the course was completed?
      I tend to not keep track of that in the spreadsheet, although I guess I could. The numbers in column A:A are just the course codes that I believe will satisfy those classes.
      >And in the yellow columns under active, assigned, and type what data are you entering in those cells?
      Assigned is some crap, you can just ignore it. I was using it for my friend's stuff.
      Active are going to be the courses currently assigned to me by my mentor. As in, the courses I'm Actively working on.
      Type is just going to be "objective assessment" (aka exam), or "performance assessment" (aka an essay), or both.

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  3 роки тому

      Oh nice, 55%! It really depends on the job and if you have to commute or not. For example, if you have a job at a bean factory where you have to commute, it means 1+ hours of your day is wasted on commute, and you obviously can't implement binary trees while pasting labels to cans of beans, so it's going to be a lot harder to fit your course work in. However, if you work from home doing help desk, you can get a lot more of your course work done. I'm usually in some kind of scenario where I can do course work throughout the day, so I can finish quick if I put a lot of effort. Hope this makes sense!

      ua-cam.com/video/V_M6RK3Gxb0/v-deo.html
      As for which degree is "better", the computer science degree is hands-down the best, in my opinion. It teaches you the deep inner workings of operating and touches on other security topics. You'll also learn how encryption works on a really low-level and obviously you'll learn many aspect of development/software engineering, etc. However, there is a cost to getting the cs degree, that is it's much, much harder than the IT degrees. You can obviously work in Cyber just fine without a CS degree as most people do, but if you have the time, patience, drive, and coins, the CS degree is better. Just my opinion!

This becomes the case even more-so when you have a portfolio and start getting experience. Google reached out to me for a Software Engineering interview while I have a CS degree from WGU. I can guarantee they don't care where my degree is from haha. But to answer your question, I would say employers look upon it neutrally and just think, "Oh ok good, he has a degree."

    I'm 40 year old single father of 2. 9 and 13. Haven't been to school in almost 20 years. I also work full time and door dash for extra cash. I was always good at math and science. I want to go back to school and was thinking cs was a good fit for me. Any idea where i should start or advice?

      Hey Rickle, I would definitely start with tis video, then check out the rest of my videos in the my CS playlist (pay special attention to the main CS video and the study.com video). If you are still good and want to give it a shot, I would definitely "up" your math skill and tackle calculus outside of WGU at straighterline. After that is done, I would bring your programming skill up to a decent level (see some of my recommendations in this video and the play list). Do as much of the CS degree as you can outside of WGU (taking classes from study.com, sophia.org, etc), then transfer the credits in before you start.
      Playlist: ua-cam.com/video/d3iKMoCIclA/v-deo.html
      It takes a decent amount of effort/energy, but can be rewarding. Get as good as you can and don't like your health/physical slip during your study--it's easy to happen. Watch Frank Niu on Tiktok for motivation, haha.

    How would it have taken you if you did *NOT* study before even enrolling, just went in "blind" as you said?
    One Year?

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  3 роки тому

      The CS degree? I estimate maybe about a year since I already have exposure to DS and Algos and the maths. Without those things and no other gen-ed classes, probably over 2 years. As an average non-smart person, it took me quite a while to learn data structures and algorithms. It takes me a while to learn math too, so I kind of assume those things would stretch out the CS degree quite a bit.
      For the Cyber Masters, maybe it would have taken me ~6 months instead of 12 days. It's easy compared to the BS in CS. It's really hard to gauge the time though. I get a bunch of random knowledge from doing random stuff over the years, plus I already had CISSP (which took 3 months to get) going in.
      Hope this helps :(

      CS is going to be much, much more difficult than the IT tracks, no matter how you slice it. You might not even really need to get the IT degree if you opt for the CS degree hehe.
      If you're dead set on taking both, I recommend doing CS first to get it outta the way 😂

      I'm definitely going to make a video on this. It's kind of hard to only use KA since they don't actually have a DM section--though they do have some DM topics. I ended up passing DM1 by using study.com, but I did use TrevTutor, Khan Academy, and some other random UA-cams to help supplement the study. I haven't done DM2 yet, but I'll cover all of this eventually :D. DM is /super/ hard for me for some reason. Thanks for watching!

    IN A NUTSHELL. Tuition is charged by the term so it would benefit you if you could cram extra courses in that term. Note: Tuition is due on the first of the term. However, they will charge you $55 dollars to set up a payment plan. My strong advice is not to pay the set-up fee and just make the payments. Having not paid the full tuition will put you on financial hold which means absolutely nothing.
    WGU is competency-based, where once you complete and pass the assignment called performance assessment(PA), you move onto the next course. Each PA follows a rubric, has writing requirements, and goes through an evaluation process. There were 2 objective assessments which are monitored via webcam. (not kidding)
    Here's the crappy part, if you have questions about the rubric or the course, they insist you make an appointment with the course instructor (CI), who is usually not immediately available. There is an alternative group who you can schedule an appointment with one of them. More times than not, it has been my experience the CI is someone off in la la land and not worth the wait.
    Get a mentor that will call you every week and talks about you.

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the detailed post! I feel both CIs and mentors are kind of hit or miss. With the amount of research I do (reddit, Google in general), I ALMOST don't need them for anything, but sometimes the CIs have some nice goodies (Artificial Intelligence Task 2 comes to mind).
