  • there isnt many things i like more than irritating the deq people!!!!
    this is how you get rid of the HORSEPOWER ROBBING!! air injection pump and EGR PILE OF CRAP!!!!.
    this will clean up your engine bay a ton, and maybe free up a few horses along the way (dont hold your breathe!) but it will definitely make your engine run smoother and cleaner!!

    Great video! A friend deleted my smog pump 4 years ago but did the delete kit. Got rid of the annoying tick it was making. But didn't do the full emissions delete. I didn't get a check engine light until I changed to an Explorer Intake. Also put a used set of GT40p heads. Engine light has been on since but I don't care because we're inspection exempt in NJ. I can always do the plug in.

    Thanks, this video has been the most helpful of all the one's I've watched. Just like you said, the smog pump hoses are right in the way of the spark plugs on the passenger side and it's annoying has hell, especially when you look at the drivers side.

Might get more traffic from people searching different stuff (I came for the EGR delete “kit” and your video came up!). Keep the videos coming! Lots of good info in this !

    You have no idea how much I am glad I found your video.. I have a 1990 crown Victoria with a 302 and I am doing the smog pump delete.. but I kept wondering what to do with the top check valve with the tubes that run to the back of the heads. I was so excited when I heard you say that some guys just take the whole tube off and then they just flipped them around from the passengers to the driver side and it plugged up the holes..

    The output of CO2 with or without is the equivalent of five marbled in a pint jar, or a gallon jog. Same CO2, difference density. It was a trick to beat 70s emissions regulations

    Thanks, I did the plugs on my heads and got all those stupid air lines removed, but in my Bronco I had plenty of room to screw them in the back of the heads, on my 5.8l engine. I also did the delete pulley, but it wasn’t the same size pulley as the air pump pulley but measured it up and installed a larger idler pulley after the alternator so I could used the same size stock belt.
    The modern high flow cats don’t even need that shot of air from the pump to start the cycle in the catalytic converters. The best part I exceed the standard now if you check the tailpipe.
    The logic behind that air pump system is like having a peeing section in a pool, you can pee in the shallow end, because we swim in the deep end...how Ford sold that idea to the EPA is what is amazing. Someone signed off on that idea, that look the engine makes less CO2 now...
    My truck is probably 100 lbs lighter now between the pump, lines and the HUGE stock cats.

    Haha great vid. I’m planning on deleting my smog pump and egr too. Along with the water pump and power steering pump too. I’m goin electric water pump and power steering. No a/c So I only need a belt for the alternator. Hopefully I’ll get it done by spring I’ll try to make a vid and share on UA-cam on what I did

      Forgot to ask. Did you get the plug thing to plug into where the egr used to go. If so did it work and if you can hook me up with a link or part number and make that would be awesome

    i always put cut offs on both heater core lines and h them so in summer cut them off winter crack them to desired temp there is so much heat in the box that the heater core and evap core is in that it affects a/c cooling and when u cut them off h pipe lets coolant circulate still

    A lot of people say stuff about how removing the EGR is bad, I've removed the EGR in my 89 Town Car, I've noticed that it does not surge anymore and it didn't make a noticable increase or decrease in power. The only thing that is true is it needs to run on higher octane fuel now because the EGR eliminates the need for higher octane fuels, I run 89.

    I am doing the same thing on a 1980 Ford 2.3l 4cyl. I have everything removed except for the check valve on the manifold. Any suggestions how to remove it or should I just leave it installed. Thanks.

      vogmar1 I left mine and capped it, it doesn’t do anything if it’s just sitting on the hard line capped, but use a hose clap to hold it down just cause.

    hows your smog inspections work in Oregon? is it the same as California where every two years you have to pass a one hundred fifty point smog inspection and pass the clean air emission test out the exhaust tail pipe which is then test measured by three machines?
    Can you legally run straight pipe in Oregon? no catilytic converters?

      If the vehicle is 20 years or older it doesn’t have to have a smog check, so yes, as long as your not in Portland and nobody complains you can run straight pipes, there is no 150 point check here, the plug into your computer and pull some data from there, and some from the exhaust with the engine at 2500 RPM, and that’s it, it’s a 5 minute ordeal.

    The correct size belt may be 84.5. I had my smog pump pulley basically stop spinning. So it broke the belt. My question to you should I still get the smog delete pulley? And is the car able to keep driving how I have it without the pulley?

      dougiet00fresh yes it will still drive, I put the delete in because I didn’t like how close the tensioner was to another pully, o felt like the belt was gonna rub on it’s self and I didn’t want to snap a belt or anything.

      @@Bufordboonegotcha your a great help bro. My new factory belt lasted a month just snapped on me today on the way home. Luckily I was within walking distance of a parts store. I grabbed the factory and the 84.5in belt for the smog delete since the pump went out. It got me home, I just hope it gets me to work and back until friday

      dougiet00fresh it absolutely should get you till Friday, if you hear anything weird return that belt and grab a shorter belt, i really think the delete is the way to go just seems way safer.

    If you do pump delete but still have ac you need a 84-1/2 belt but it goes on a different way so the tensioner isnt so close to the belt

    I just did the smog delete today. I was going to install head plugs but no way were they going to thread in to that carbon mess so I just reversed the plates from the giant metal tube around back. I also got the egr delete kit with the computer attachment. No etests where I live anyway.

      I wanted to reverse the plates but I didn’t want to goof around behind the engine cause I’m lazy lol, the egr kit keeps you from getting a engine light right? That’s what they display anyway.

      right no engine lights. having said that I don't know if my 86 even has one? I pulled a 22 from my code reader which turned out to be a nasty vacuum line leak. youd think thatd thrown a CEL!

    you probably could have put a piece of tin can in between the EGR valve and the manifold, bolted it back up and plugged it in this way you won't get any codes and it's still blocking off the two holes! but I guess if you want the cleaner look the proper block off plate would be the way to go but you're still going to get a check engine light! also you would probably have to cut off that little tab coming out of the EGR valve!

      There is a actually delete kit that you can buy that has a probe that goes in the plug so you don’t get the engine code, the egr in these cars is enormous and ugly so it has to go.

    u can take the smog pump out gut it and re grease bearings then put pump back on and it will work as a pully and look stock

      There is a junction block I think it had 4 or 5 lines on it, I capped them at that block, I think there was only one left over after I took everything out.

      Should be easy to find, mine was right on top, on the passenger side, if you have an ac car it’s by the condenser and all that crap.

      diesel Power N GunPowder thanks I appreciate the help. The last guy who had my cobra just took out the pump and put a mock pulley in its place then put a bolt in the hose coming off of it. Left the egr on and everything. Wanna get it all off and clean it up

    It’s a Bobcat belt bud with a deleted smog and Ac with no delete kit if anything you might have to replace your idler Pully a little pre mature and haus keep doing what you do some of us read books some of us go to the race track…just sayin!!!

    From what i've read, the worst part is that the smog equipment is only for STARTUP emissions. Once the car is at operating temperatures it does nothing.

    Bought a fox and it was hacked up H pipe welded together and I had no idea what the pipe went to in the middle little one which is for the air pump I'm assuming now I'm in California so I'm screwed

    All the air pump does is send oxygen to the catalytic converters so they "light off" to burn off the spent gases from the combustion chamber. If you got an old air pump on your fox and live in a smog state and need it to be there, you should replace it 150,000+ miles. When the Air pump fails it has a chance to seize and stop the rotation of the serpentine belt. first hand experience. the EGR is just recycling exhaust gases into the intake manifold to reburn the gases. Definitely free up some horsepower taking off the air pump!

      Yeah I’ve learned a lot more about the whole system sense I made this video, thanks for the info!! This car was only 120k I think, but when I took the pump off it felt super chunky and like it was wanting to seize.

    Great video, just a minor correction. You kept saying CO2, the emissions systems are meant to reduce CO and NOx. So the correct term is Carbon Monoxide (CO) not CO2, which is Carbon Dioxide. Catalytic converters actually increase the amount of CO2 emissions. The byproducts of the catalyst process are H2O and C02.
    Also, EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation not engine gas recirculation.

    Just came across this. I bought a 91 mustang with all that stuff taken off already, it the belt rubs at the tensioner. I was told there is no belt that will fit with the smog gone.

      Doc Portland I tried many different belts, I couldn’t find one that was really “right” you can buy a delete kit fairly cheap, then use a stock belt, and it looks and works right with piece of mind.

    Its not Co2. Its CO, Carbon Monoxide, not Carbon Dioxide. Also EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Not Engine gas recirculation.

    Well sorry sounds good but that air pump theory is incorrect, The air pump doesn't pump in air to change the Co2 ratio in the tailpipe, the air pump in adds outside air into the cats because it has more oxygen than exhaust as to make the catalytic converter run hotter the hotter the catalyst is the better it functions.... Just saying....

      What type of plug are they? Those holes are not threaded, no they have to be more of a cap than a plug unless they expect you to thread the holes.

      5/8 by 11 threaded plugs go in the back of each cylinder head they make a pretty in depth video on how to do it. You can also get vice grips and close off the pipe going to the cat so there’s no exhaust leak. Also question did you just use the block off plate for egr? Or did you use the whole spacer. I think I’m going to just do the block off plate. Let me know if you ran into any problems

      Jacob Glace the egr had a gasket on it when I pulled it off so I used one for the plate.

    Removing the egr affects your gas mixture and can cause your vehicle to run lean without a tune, removing the air pump does not cause any issues.
