The Battle Royale That "Almost" Popped Off - Realm Royale
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- During the rise of the battle royale genre, many developers saw a great opportunity to make a name for themselves and cash in with a title of their own to rival the likes of PUBG and Fortnite.
There is a long list of battle royale titles that have come and gone over the years, but the story of Realm Royale stands out amongst the crowd as it once had the potential for greatness only for it to be squandered by its own developers.
In today's video, we explore the rise of fall of Realm Royale and see how this title that could have become a major name in the battle royale genre ultimately fell out of relevancy.
UPDATE: Hi-Rez has relaunched this title in the form of Realm Royale Reforged.

If things had gone differently with Hi-Rez, do you think Realm Royale could have had the potential to pop off and join the likes of PUBG and Fortnite as leaders in the battle royale genre?
Definitely, it had big name streamers and plenty of tournaments every week. My personal favorite BR
I loved this game :(
No
hell yeah
I play tho
"strange decisions and ultimately neglect."
yep. this one phrase just describes Hi-Rez perfectly.
Hopefully they dont abandon rogue company. Its their best game by far
gg Yeah that’s a no from me chief
Smite is a serious contender for one of the best MOBAs of all time and Paladins is a definitely fun and unique alternative to other hero shooters, Realm royale was starting to make waves in the community and their old games...I don’t know much about them but people seemed to like them
The only difference between those and Rogue Company is that they haven’t fucked everything up yet, like OB64 in paladins and the Forge rework in Realm royale. I’m sure they’ll find some way to do that
@@f.b.iagent3971 Lol nah, roco is by far their most unique game yet. Paladins and realm were less likely to succeed because they started with an already popular formula and tried to put their own twist on it. Thats why it only took one update to kill the game and fixing the problem didn't change anything. There's no other game quite like roco right now. I can't speak on smite because i dont play mobas
@@ddddddsssseeee Yeah Smite is more unique it has over 100 gods from different religions as playable characters and is a 3rd person Moba instead of top down view..
Smite is anything but neglected and honestly I don't know if they've made any poor decisions with it.
Paladins suffers from weird decisions from time to time, but ultimately it still operates as normally
Realm Royale was absolutely shafted. It tried to enter an oversaturated market and it seemed that at the first sign of adversity they shut down curled into a ball and are waiting for so few people to play before they can turn off the failing life support.
Hi-Rez is a mess. Always has been, always will be.
Yea i think they have somd higher management issues. Their ceo (?) is very dumb
I think he is banned from reddit
Nope.
I used to be a religious Smite Player, I'm curious how they treat Rogue Company
coming from Smite, I can tell you its a fact.
As someone who played Realm Royale and still play it occasionally, it was very good at launch and fun to play but then High Rez killed it
:(
:(
:(
:(
They kill all their games. Tribes Ascend was murdered in cold blood. I haven't touched a Hi-Rez game since.
That clip of Gigantic in the beginning made me tear up. Two years now since we lost that masterpiece.

Bruh I played paladins sooo much and heard that the same Dev's made this game,I played it,and I actually thought it was pretty fun
Yeah and it was really easy tho.
@@felixbecker4959 just like paladins
Egg
Are you annoyed from many cat girls on this game? (Because I am)
Damn bro, no regrets right cause u at least had fun
It's honestly quite sad, I recently tried realm and I can honestly say it's quite fun. It just clearly isn't popular anymore and isn't getting updates. I can't even imagine how popular it could have been without that forge change
As someone who's competed in online tourneys for this game and played it almost everyday to see it's rise and fall, I really liked this video and wanted to add onto it.
Another great part about the game was the fact that all weapons were pretty much single fire only guns and no automatic weapons which made fights feel and play out much more differently than other shooters. Fights would be more strategic and good aim and skill was rewarded; then they released the venom pistol. This was by far the most overpowered gun in the game as it was a burst fire weapon that did more damage than an actual sniper if all 3 bullets hit the body. Pair up with the fact that you take poison damage and you can enchant it with fire damage too at legendary, you can 2-3 burst people down without even trying. Then even though everyone complained for months, after 3 months of silence they come out with a "weapons balance" update that simply just buffed the venom pistol to have a higher fire rate! That was a final straw for a lot of people. Not only does the community get ignored, we got a big fat middle finger from the devs.
I wouldn't blame the forge being taken out what brought this game down because they brought it back, but during late 2018 there was a series of updates that removed things from the game such as an entire class (engineer which was my personal favorite) and changed abilities drasticlly.
Abilities was another core part of the gameplay that movement and utilitiy but one day they decided to increase the cooldowns of everything by 20 seconds which is terrible when you consider some of the abilities are really weak like "dodge roll" which just simply let your character roll which was just stupid to have a long cooldown for.
Then there came the bots. This is what did it for me and I slowly got bored and stopped playing. These weren't player bots, these were HiRez's bots and my only theory is that they did this just to fill the lobbys of their dying game and make it look less dead than it was. Instead of being in a game with 100 players, you now have games of only 20 players and like 80 bots. The bots were so easy and obvious that everyone just treated them as free resources. To give you an idea, you can stand in front of one of these bots and they would never kill you, just pretend to fighting you by taking a couple shots in your general direction. There were some games where you would never see a real player until the final circle. In fact I played some games where I never saw a real player and all I found were bots.
As disapointing as the bots were, it turned out to be a necessary evil. Even though a lot of the main player base left, a new playerbase was starting to grow. As crossplay became enabled, there were a lot of new console players joining the scene and these people who didn't realize they were fighting bots thought that they were actually just really good at the game and got addicted and stuck around for a while. Then I think somebody took over and released a few great weapons & class balance updates and now I think the game is back to being very fun to play again. Unfortunete that it came a bit late, but the game is still kicking and you can find games easily if you want to play it. I had a lot of great memories of this game and just because it isn't popular doesn't mean you can't have a good time too
Wow nice dissertation
Removing engineer was a good choice tbh. It was just too op and didn't really fit.
if just realm royale and paladins werent made by Hi-Rez, it would have been a LOT better.
Yup
Or any game. Hitez is just a mess. I love paladins so much but because of the bugs(some are even existed on beta are still in the game) that they do not fix, the server is trash, they do not listen to the community. Gamers are happy about rogue and how hirez listen to the community with continuos update. I wonder how long would they do that. Of course it is new, that is something to be expected
You know you have to click on it when it's made by akshon esprts
Thank you!
Its like im at gun point
What
I hope we get a video covering Pokken Tournament, I love these videos that highlight different competitive games stories
the best part about this video is reminding that Return to the Obra Dinn is a great game and Im going to replay it right now.
oh and "X-game was decent but it got Hi-Rezz'ed"
My favorite game right now. But can it really be replayed?
One of the most baffling things about how hirez handled RR is that they never took the pts seriously. They would throw the servers up anywhere from 2 to 3 days to just hours before pushing the patch live. For example, I saw a new patch was up on the pts, played one game, then the servers went offline and it was live the next day. They didn't care about player feedback AT ALL in the pts. It was merely to see if it crashed people's computers or not. The worst thing about this is hirez never bothered to even finish the game, they "made a whole team dedicated to RR" and silently shuffled them all over to rogue company and to this day still has poor performance and features that were promised and never delivered. Especially on PS4 I have several friends who crash in the lobby roughly 20 percent of the time and this has been a problem for as long as the game has been on that platform. Hirez handling of RR is what killed it, and it is just sad to me because it was a really unique BR that offered a very different experience. I hope that hirez will use some of the income from rogue company to go back and properly finish RR but I know they won't. It's worse off than maintenance mode because they aren't even maintaining it, they just keep the servers on and I'm sure they would turn them off if they weren't terrified of customers lashing out considering they're still selling cosmetics to unaware console players that don't know the game is dead.
Anyone else notice the Return of the Obra Dinn music?
I would love to see a similar analysis like this video on the game at 0:20 to 0:28 (Gigantic)
Their parent company also made some unfortunate choices that resulted in the death of the game.
RIP gigantic, you were taken from us too soon
@@harrysteel864 R I P :'(
I remember playing that game ONCE on Xbox then next time I try to log on and then I found out :(
Harry Steel people are making a new game inspires by gigantic it’s called project stamina they are almost starting their alpha
@@wouterdegroot9467 I'm actually in their discord already but thanks!
Realm Royale was extremely fun and fresh when I got to experience it in it's short rise. It took new creative elements in that of the chicken, the forge and even the non overpowered abilities and I loved all of it. The combat felt fair and the opportunity to make a play and outskill your opponent felt good even if you were on the receiving end. Developer updates aside I can't help but wonder if it's mistake was competing against a giant in fortnite while that game still had a stubborn pulse under the limelight.
No it was 100% the developer updates. Fortnite was not the issue. I came from the PUBG community and hated Fortnite for its building mechanics and lack of skill. I came to Realm Royale with a couple of mates and we absolutely loved it but the updates, not just the Forge update but CONTINUOUS poor decisions made by the developers made us leave.
They simply did not listen to their community in the slightest. People were constantly asking for balance fixes and changes and instead they removed the Forge. It was definitely the spark that caused the mass exodus but people weren't going back to Fortnite. I'd say most of the ex-Realm Royale players really moved to Apex when that came finally came out.
UDPATE: Hi-Rez is bringing back Realm Royale in the form of "Realm Royale Reforged"
0:23 don’t tempt me with the Gigantic footage man. It got review bombed bc it came out around the time as Overwatch, even though it was WAYY different and WAYYY better.
Friend and I used to play this in really early beta, before engineer even existed. Had some 4am nights playing, it was really fun and I enjoyed it, came back later and just had no fun at all, they really killed it
Hi-rez makes a great concepts that could legit take down other games, never secures the gameplay, and then fuck over the people who loved the orignal game
Big shoutout to your editors for stealing music from a good indie game (Obra Dinn) and not regurgitating crappy copyright-free music
I recently got recommended some non overwatch videos from this channel, and I'm really glad you guys are branching out and making cool content on many different games 👍
I think we abandoned the game after two rounds of the chest patch.
It didn't only take away the uniqueness of the game, it also destroyed the 'pace' of the game.
Prevoiusly you droppend in an area with a forge nearby, you fought until you were the last team in the area, then you started crafting, you sometimes needed to defend the forge and proceeded to the next forge. This made the game really balanced, as the teams emerged winning a skirmish were usually equally well equipped and mainly skill and positioning decided the fights. After the chest patch we got wiped twice by a guy who got a legendary weapon from its first chest... We never gone back.
RIP was honestly so much fun when it first came out. Devs killed it...
It's just Hi Rez being Hi Rez
I instantaneously uninstalled when I was 1-hit killed at 500m by a sniper while having the best armor and helmet in the game and full hp.
Get a better gaming chair
0:24 to be blindsided is to be surprised by something. what you are describing is like, tunnel vision
I'd never even heard of this game but developer neglect seems to be a recurring theme with additional games and game modes made by companies with an already successful game (Riot Games, Kingsisle Entertainment, etc.) where rather than give the new game/mode the TLC it deserves they'd rather just abandon it & give its playerbase faint hope of updates that are never intended on coming to it. In some cases the company blames the players for the lack of updates rather than take responsibility for the broken promises themselves (Riot did this for Dominion) and/or rely on players to advertise and draw players in for them (KI does this for Pirate101). It's very sad and frustrating to have to deal with this kind of behavior from companies.
I had 700+ hours in this game and have not touched it since that forge change
Hi-rez always has amazing ideas BUT THEY ALWAYS crash along the way. Always. And that's such a wasted potential (and also beneficial for the opposition because they don't need to move a finger, just wait so hi-rez will kill itself eventually).
That's sad, but completely true.
Forge. What a good BR mechanic. A shame other BRs haven't taken it yet.
I loved realm Royale. It was so fun. I popped offfff.. but i just stopped playing Idk why.
I stopped playing after the classes were removed
Since it's such a different type of battle royale, to the point that it's more of a competitive multiplayer, I'm sure we're interested in seeing how Fall Guys, drawing its inspiration less from ARMA and PUBG than from Mario Party and Takeshi's Castle, holds up...
I remember them hosting a competition with all its competitors faced the big screen with a live map of the tournament. Everyone who complained that they could see their positions or that they peaked around corners, letting other get advantage against them in said battle got kicked out of the competition... So dumb...
Realm Royale forge update was the exect same thing hi-rez did with paladins with the OB64 patch. paladins still didn't recover from that.
Hirez destroys its own title for no reason. What else is new. Paladins also had potential but hirez flushed it down the toilet and now it's dying a slow but inevitable death
I was going to comment that I actually really enjoyed Realm Royale and miss it but then I realize that I actually really loved GLOBAL AGENDA and miss it and Hi Rez has been at this shit for OVER 10 YEARS NOW.
THEY CANT KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH IT
This is such a fun game its a shame it got ignored and ruined by the Dev's
The game was fun when it came out, I played it a lot, but then updates just kept ruining it, now I imagine it's all about skins and nothing else.
You guys should do a video on Splatoon or the new shift in online gaming that is adding more PVE elements (Fortnite, The Cycle, Crucible, etc)
I still play this game and like it
I’m still sad about Gigantic,it was my ‘first love’.As much as I love Overwatch now,Gigantic will always have a place in my heart. It had so much personality, and I struggled playing any other games after experiencing its fast paced game style.I was a Beckett/Zandora main but also loved playing Ramsey and Imani.
There are/were a couple fan projects that are going to try to capture the feel of the game, and I would like for them to succeed, but I’m not holding my breath.
People are making a game that’s inspired by gigantic it’s called project stamina and alpha is planned in the coming month/ next month you might want to check that out
Yo can we shout out the real tragedy that was showcased in the intro? Gigantic. Such a good game, lost to time
I grinded that game so hard, but now i’d badically alteady forgotten it
Appreciate the Obra Dinn music as the background for this.
Bruh why the obradinn Music, now Im gonna have goose bumps the entire video, its too good.
Can't wait for another Hi-Rez game XD
Hi-Rez is literally notorious for making a great game, and then ruining it by doing the opposite of player feedback, its kind of insane really, I cant think of a single game they have made that wasnt great at the start and then rapidly destroyed by their idiotic decision making. They usually start out with decent balancing, fun weapons/abilities, interesting mechanics, and rapidly remove them and rebalance shit to make certain characters and abilities useless, its just baffling to me.
Hirez games come and go way top fast. Smite is probably the one exception, what with Paladins still being a bugfest after four years of development.
I would love a melee based BR where the only long range weapons are super slow bows. Just get in someone's face and smash things.
I remember when all the big streamers were talking this game up. Just for it to flop like this...so sad
can you guys cover a vid about SOS The game & its downfall? It was one of maybe the best social br games until they ruined it all with one update.
Realm was the only BR that I enjoyed watching because people had incentive to actually fight instead of just hiding
The pois were really nice
You need to frag to get the best items
It was so cool
Its a shame what happened
I remember wanting to play Battlegrounds but it was so broken that most of the time you couldn't play it and it was down
From someone who has been playing Smite and Paladins for 5 year, I have one thing to say: *LOW-REZ is absolute PAIN*
They're the incarnation of, "blame the game"
I absolutely love the Obra Dinn music. Good choice!
Whats the game at 0:21???
Idk, looks cool tho
another hero shooter called Gigantic, sadly it shut down...
There's a discord server where you can join games with other peoople though, but you'd struggle to find matches.
Its called Gigantic
Wow, what a memory of game that i used to love and play but after a week i got overwatch and forgot it but if overwatch will get boring for me i will definitely come back to play it because it was really fun even though i felt it was broken (btw i was a paladin player so i was rly exited when the game came out)
Hi Rez tends to follow the meta in games, add something that makes it somewhat fun but since that feature isn’t a ground breaking success they just do bad experiments. The only game that doesn’t feel like it went through a metamorphosis is rogue company it’s the one time when they do nothing is when I which something changed because the game just feels generic. Personally the highlight of rogue company is seeing doctor disrespect in the game but that’s more of a meme than anything else.
Overwatch Pops Off-Paladins
Fortnite Pops Off-Realm Royale
Valorant Pops off-Rogue Company
Hi-Rez has really bad marketing strategies: take a good game that did well and make it meh but then make it bad.
Would love a video about Apex Legends!
I still play every day. Haven't found anything else I enjoy coming back to.
Hi-Rez moto : Make a good game => rip benefits => throw the game in the trash can 2 years later => repeat
I think it’s kinda odd that the only think you really work for is sloppy class mastery and cosmetics that usually still require micro transactions. It’s got it’s own unique charm, but it just feels super unfinished to me.
I thought the issue was the stupid number of bots in lobbies. Or did that come post-forge removal and mass exodus?
Like I played it but then they realeased a patch in which they collided every class into one, and because of that, I stopped
Meet Hi-Rez, a Nintendo clone that will make yoy fell in love with their game and cut it lifespan short
I literally just published a video about this game on my channel. I really enjoy playing it and I’m going to be trying to get some more friends of mine into it. I especially love the chickens! LOL
Game has such a huge Potential dont know how a company is able to Fuck up so hard
How tf is high-Rez so good at killing games
Because they're greedy. They always prioritize getting maximum profits over the quality and stability of their games.
They should have done a closed beta or alpha test before completely releasing it to the public in the alpha phase. Then they would have had less damage with the changes people wouldnt have liked.
I actually used to play this game alot and it was so much fun especially when your team worked togheter lol, too bad the game died before it could be released
Akshon on Realm Royale: "Following trends alone does not make for a bad game."
Akshon on Icons: "Less of an homage, and more of a watered-down shell of potential."
can you please do a video about how epic games killed fortnite save the world?
Too bad. Can you make a video about other Hi Rez games like Paladins or Rogue Company?
They should reboot realm Royale into an MMO. That would be so good.
dude imagine a realm royale and a paladins with actual balancing and a competetive scene and content updates. like screw hi-rez
i recently discovered this game and i'm enjoying it quite a lot!
gwent very underrated card game but made by a stellar game company
Anyone here remembers spellbreak? Awesome game can't wait for the release
0:25 is this Gigantic? Wasant it closed?
Do Darwin's project next
What killed this game is them removing what made it different and making it the same as other BR games.
Realm Royale was one of the best games ive ever played. I hate battle royales personally, but this, this was something different. The abilities, the weapons, the forge, the map, the chicken, the horse movement, the looting, everything was perfect. Late game was so fun when you had all legendaries(especially the sniper) and would do ridiculous damage. I feel like this game was one of the best in terms of rewarding skilled players. Another game ruined by the devs, yet again.
I just hope Evil Mojo moves away fro. hi-Rez’s stupidity… right now at this time, I’m happy with the updates but being a hi-Rez game it still gives me anxiety how easily they can fuck up Paladins… I actually played Realm Royale before and had fun but BRs weren’t my cup of tea. Shit seeing this again makes me nervous for the future.
use to be my only br game that i enjoyed it is really sad that they ruined their game, when all what they had to do is to repatch...
I remember this game
this is Hi Rez, always remove good things, like the payload game mod in paladins .
Could you do the history of Hanzo? I’d like to see my bois history from my fav overwatch channel,
Boggles my mind how they have a game that people love and they just... kill it for some reason. “100k players? Nah, we want 3k!”
I mean they got a good practice for hyperscape
what’s the game at 0:22 ? looks funky
Akshon AND roasting hirez. Sign me the fuck up
-former smite player
I don't know why Hi Rez always find a way to fuck things up
Plus some games were full of bots when I used to play it. Hi rex just doesn't make good choices🤦🏻♂️
Realm Royale is an incredibly fun game, it's just to bad that hirez decided to pull a hirez
realm royal with the initial paladins characters were awesome. then it went downhill fckn fast
Palidins was my game for a time
i still love this FREE game and other hi rez games
Forgot that this was even real.
