LA native here. This song means A LOT TO US LA NATIVES still till this day. This song is our culture. We love Randy. I cry every time I hear this song especially when Freddie freeman hit the grand slam homer, and this started playing. I couldn’t hold it together. Bursted into tears.
Amber, I'm a native Californian who was born and raised in Los Angeles. I was a teenager when this song came out. We had such pride when Randy Newman released this song. Therefore, I can, confidently state that this video does, in deed, display the "Golden Era" of Los Angeles.
Hate to break it to you but this song is pure irony. Look at the bum over there. He's down on his knees. Look at these women. What do you make of that?
That's Jeff Porcaro on drums and Steve Lukather on guitar and David Paich on keys, all riding high as Toto at the time. He used them for the song because they were the cream of the crop of L.A. session musicians. It's also Christine McVie and Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac on backing vocals, because other than the Beach Boys which are mentioned in the song there's nothing more L.A. than Fleetwood Mac.. Epic song!
Some of the most talented guys in the history of American music. It seems like they played on almost every hit record of the 80s. The combined body of work of Lukather, Paich, and the Porcaros is staggering.
@@TheMkarr Actors are not the only ones that win Oscars. Directors, producers, composers, musicians/singers, makeup artists, costuming, graphic effects, sound effects, etc. Even rappers i.e. Eminem. I live in Southern California and, some years back, when there was still such a thing as an end to a tv station's broadcast day, one local station here would play this video instead of the traditional recording of the National Anthem.
Amber, your glam would fit in perfectly in L.A. (I live there)! They play this song over the loudspeakers at the start of the L.A. Marathon every year.
Long time Celtic fan but had Laker season seats in the 80’s and they would play this at every game. I would stand, smile and join my LA brothers and sisters in the sing-along…I Love it!!!
LOL! I just drove back from LA about 5 hours ago! My daughter moved to Hollywood for her new job and we brought a bunch of her stuff to her! We saw the walk of stars and the usual LA sites in left over minutes 🙂 Saw cool cars, weird dudes and beautiful ladies! And even sang "I love LA" as we watched the 4th of July fireworks on Thursday 2024!
I was living in L.A. in '84 during the Summer Olympics and this was the unofficial theme song for that city at that time. You couldn't escape it and you could hear it being sung from cars all summer.
I went to the L.A. Summer Olympics at the L.A. Collusiem in 84' and this song was huge in L.A.. This video is totally 80s L.A. I moved out to Antelope Valley because the greater L.A. area is to crazy these days: crowded, dangerous and filthy. The tourist areas are still fairly safe in the daytime. I still love L.A. though, lots of great spots still.
i love that he included disneyland in the video even though it's in neighboring orange county (where i grew up and still live). you see the matterhorn ride ("look at that mountain") and the old marquee sign from the entrance. cheech marin (of cheech and chong) did a song/music video called "born in east L.A." which parodies this video near the end.
LA born and raised here 🙋🏻♂️… Randy Newman is one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century, Rock and Roll HoF’er and one of the best live performers around. He has done a lot of satirical songs, written for so many and is beloved. I love LA became an anthem in the 80s and plays even now after LA sports teams win
Randy has been around longer than Huey, plus he's written music for several movie soundtracks, he and Danny Elfman started in specific music genres and expanded into major composers. There were a couple of other people who evolved in the same way as well. The late 70's through the mid 80's produced a lot of talented individuals who are still unmatched. Anyway, loved the review, love you guys, take care and stay safe ❤️
Randy Newman rocks! This is a sleeper song from the 80's that doesn't get enough play. Thanks for bringing it back! It's just fun, unique and a true representation of MTV from the 1980's.
I used to wonder if people from New York City were pissed at his beginning of the song. But I did love LA back in the 80’s , and I got to see it for the first time in ‘87 when I went to see my brother who lived there at the time. LA was a hot bed of pop culture in the 80’s . On the other hand, I finally got to go to NYC in April 2023, and I loved it!
This was a signature song from the 80s , the song, its lyrics, add in the video , it just captured the essence of what is was like to live and experience that era. I lived in SoCal during those years,, trust the 80s wre the best, n they still are❤
Southern California native here. Born in Santa Monica and grew up in the 50's 60's. Every Beach Boy song was true back then. Now, it's a different world. You don't really want to go there. Love this Randy Newman song and I always think of Steve Martin's hilarious movie, L.A. Story. Very funny movie full of jokes- some of which only southern CA people get.
Amber...Randy Newman was a Pro songwriter for others He later decided to record some of his own songs himself. Bob Dylan showed the world that if the song was good you didnt have to be a great singer. Just unique and in tune.
Mid 80's was a golden time for Los Angeles, the 1984 Summer Olympics was held in the city. Frank Sinatra had a tribute to L.A. released in 1984 called "L.A. is my Lady" with a lot of famous people doing cameos in the video. Also I think around 1987 Cheech and Chong had a funny song parody of Springsteen's "Born in the USA" called "Born in East L.A." that also borrowed from this Randy Newman video.
Randy Newman has had a very very long career as a songwriter, starting out in the 60s. I was a fan of his in the 70s when he started performing as well as write. In the 80s he drifted more into movie soundtrack writing. That ran in the family; his uncles Alfred and Lionel were film composers. I loved "Simon Smith And His Amazing Dancing Bear" "Dayton Ohio 1903" "Louisiana 1927" "A Wedding In Cherokee County" "Baltimore" "It's Money That Matters." His biggest hit as a performer was "Short People." He also wrote hits for other artists like "Mama Told Me Not To Come."
He was never the most prolific at putting out albums in a time where major artists pumped out at least one a year. He did his first six between 1968 and 1979 but has put out just six ever since. But plenty of soundtrack work so he does stay busy. His records were never platinum hits, so he has probably made a lot more money by going the Hollywood route while the studio albums are ways to feed the artistic muse too.
I was working for an entertainment focused courier service in the mid 90's when I was dispatched to an address above Sunset Blvd "See Randy for a recording to be picked up" from the movie "Toy Story", from Randy Newman himself. Nice guy, offered me a coffee while I waited on his couch I said no thank you to which he replied "Good 'cuz I ain't got none!" 😁
SoCal native, born & raised LA County, lived there '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s. those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end. thx for reacting to this vid, Randy nailed it.
Great artist, Randy Newman. Wrote all kinda different songs happy ones like this one, satirical like 'Short People' and thoroughly depressing (but great) songs like 'Baltimore'. Word of advice: If you go to L.A. stay north of downtown. I LOVED L.A. when I lived there (mid 1980's), I wish I could've found a decent job, I'd have stayed there. I lived on Bronson just a block north of Sunset Boulevard. I could see the "Hollywood" sign from my front door.
I word of warning, Randy Newman is famous for satire in his song. Like the song "Short People" written by a Randy Newman who is a short person. Oh and Ventura Beach is part of Greater LA. As is Malibu, Long Beach, Huntington Beach and more.
OMGosh, I lived in LA from '79 - '86. This song was released, MTV was launched, I lived at the beach, and I was in my 20's, What a time to be alive, thanks for the memories! ❤
Randy Newman is one of our greatest songwriters. You’ll know him from his scores for movies, notably the Toy Story movies. To get a very different side of him, try Sail Away (or anything else on that album) or Marie (or anything else on the album Good Old Boys). I Love LA was written to be the anthem for the 1984 Summer Olympics, which were held in LA. Finally, LA is as much of an experience as a city. There is no place quite like it. And, regardless of anything else good or bad, you can stand on a beautiful beach any day of the year and look across the water at tomorrow.
The first Randy Newman song I ever heard was done by a group called Saturday's Children and was titled "Leave That Baby Alone" - a humorous song like several of his other hits.
The first line: Hate New York City, It's cold and it's damp is a variation of a lyric from The Lady is a Tramp where it says: I hate California, it's crowded and damp. It's also a clue of what Randy Newman really wants to say about L.A.
Near the beginning, Jay started playing the Air-Piano and looked away right as L.A.'s Iconic "Jesus Saves" sign came on the screen for a second. They really captured all the iconic Landmarks. (And, oh-no, it looks like Amber missed it too !! She had her eyes closed, feelin the music.) And speaking of L.A.s Golden Age - - this song came out the Year Before the Summer Olympics came to L.A. !! So it got replayed All Summer!
Randy Newman is one of our greatest American songwriters and also an amazing satirist. I Love LA was a heartfelt love letter, but songs like Short People are straight out satire. Randy is a treasure and I'm so glad you gave him a look. He has a big selection to choose from and I hope you'll continue to listen to and learn about him.
Southern CA native here, and this song was huge back when it came out, and we heard it every year the Lakers won a Championship during the 80's after it had come out. It was played constantly though when it came out.. I also recommend Short People, which is the first song i can recall hearing of his. Randy has had his music in numerous of movies, Toy Story, Major League and more.
Randy is a Multi-Talented Song Writer, Producer extraordinare!!! He has writeen for a lot of other artists and performed himself in Movies, TV also. His song Short People was a hilarious song that some people took the wrong way and was a very Big Controversial Hit! Yes, and 80s-90s LA was the Time and Place you wanted to be! I grew up there myself..
Really good song!!! I use to Love L.A. Really different now.....good reactions.....Jay & Amber & Family must visit L.A.!!! You will never forget the second largest city in the world!!!!
I have lived in southern CA for over 40 years, lived in L.A. area for seven of those years, and, I have to say that it wasn't my favorite place to live, but, the city is unbelievably big. The traffic is the most congested and scariest you will probably ever see. I love the song, but the city is eminence.
Yes, Venice Beach is in L.A…I love Venice, love walking down the boardwalk seeing all the cool stuff the merchants sell..riding bikes down the alley ways…watching the drum circles. Yall should definitely visit!
I moved there in 1988 and have lived in or around LA ever since. It has its share of problems but there is still no place like it on earth. Being different is the norm, there is something for everyone, you can find a club for what ever hobby you have from cars to Tropical Fish. Its a place where people move to, to pursue their dreams, I sure did and am glad I did. The selection of restaurants is second to none. The small mom and pop diners are the best. My first burger joint I set at the counter and was noticing all the autographed pics of celebrities and the first one I spotted was Farrah Faucet who had written a personal note to the owners of the place. A good movie that LA was in the background ofis the film is LA LA Land with Ryan Gosling and Emma Thompson. Some things have improved over the years like smog and other things have gotten much worse like the lack of affordable housing.. I think you guys would have a blast here, just ask us locals for tips when you decide to come out.
Randy Newman has written some incredible songs. One that sticks out in my mind is "Louisiana 1927." It kept running through my mind when Hurricane Katrina hit back in 2005.
I'm surprised you guys didn't recognize this song from "The Naked Gun"....it was playing when Leslie Nielsen was frisking all players on the field for weapons!
Boston loves this song Amber, since you enjoy his voice, Randy Newman is a flat out genius, don't let the vibe fool you. Watch some of his live performances The Stuttgart Jazz Open 2006 is a great start, it s avail on the plaform He's a masterful story teller.
Great reaction guys. It is good seeing the younger generations finding music that they never heard of and liking and expanding their knowledge of the vast great history of recorded music. I myself being 62 years old am doing the same thing in going back and listening to the great music from the 30s 40s that I have never heard of. Say, one thing I want to say to you two is one of the best reaction videos I like of yours is the one you guys reacted to is, Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes. 👍

@@Rebel-cd6gcYES! 👍👍Proud L.A. girl here! Every big city has problems. People should be the change they want to see instead of complaining about how bad things are.
I love I Love LA! Always makes me remember the LA Olympics in 1984. You should check out Randy’s breakthrough hit from the 70s: Short People. Wonderful satire of bigoted people.
Add my vote for "Short People". P.S. - "Walking In L.A." by the band Missing Persons is FIRE! Amber, Missing Persons is fronted by an amazing female singer, so it's a perfect Female Friday new artist for you.
Randy Newman wrote the title song for a quirky movie called "Cold Turkey" with Dick Van Dyke. The song is "He Gives You All is Love." A movie and song you should check out.
Classic, classic tune. If you can't be smiling through this, you're a robot! The video is nearly as good as the song itself. Randy Newman, such talent.
For me, the song will always be associated with Lakers championship parades in the 80s. Randy also performed it live at the Lakers ring ceremony in 2002.
This song ( though it may be a cover) plays over the end credits of the movie “Volcano,” which came out about the same time as “Dante’s Peak.” It’s a fun song and movie.
I spent a week in LA with family. My uncle had gotten transferred out there in the late 70s/early 80s. He was one of the sweetest, calmest dudes you'd ever meet, but when he got out on the LA freeways he flipped a switch to beast mode which you basically have to do to survive.
It's actually a sarcastic song that references some of LA's problems, like homelessness and shallowness, and names various streets that were not the nicer areas in the 80s. It's a bit of an inside joke for locals, whereas most everyone else will just think that it's praising the city. Newman wrote the lyrics to be ambiguous and taken either way, but he was definitely making a little fun of his hometown.
Yep. Most of what Randy has written has been satire and so few people have gotten it in the long run. He sometimes had/has the ability shock when he writes from the mind of unsavoury characters. No one can write from the point of view of a flawed person quite like Randy. "Rednecks" and "Short People" aren't his own beliefs nor him trying to shock for the sake of it, but rather mocking bigoted types by exposing their viewpoint. "I Love L.A." is more on the light-hearted side, sarcastically praising his hometown much like how he portrays the square who's horrified by drug culture on "Mama Told Me Not To Come." It's what makes his serious, sentimental songs so jarring and brilliant. He can write touching material too.
This song and video came out in 1983. Randy Newman is almost known more of a songwriter than a singer, but he had a few hits of his own over the years. As others have mentioned, he did the song, "You've got a friend in me" from the Toy Story movie. "Short People" is a funny song. He has done music for numerous movies. Seven of his relatives, (mostly cousins), are professional conductors or classical composers.
When you have time listen to some of Randy's older stuff before he started writing music for movies. It's unusual for him to use this much instrumentation and he is a fantastic lyricist though some people don't get him because he is very satirical (viz. "Short People" and "Sail Away").. He in solo concert backed up by the great slide guitarist Ry Cooder is one of the best shows I have ever been to!
Whenever the Dodgers win a home game, this song is immediately played in Dodger Stadium as soon as the game ends. If L.A. wins any World Series games at home this year and you’re watching the telecast, you’re sure to hear this playing in the background.
J, you are connecting sounds really well - it did have a Huey Lewis feel - not forgetting about you either Mama Amber -- over the what, 3 years you have been bringing us music that we have heard all our lives, your comments and connections are SOOOOOO cool to hear !!! Keep it up you guys!!!

This song was popular during the 1984 Olympics in LA and will no doubt be again during the 2028 Olympics in LA.
If LA is still standing.
@@johnbrowne2170why wouldn’t it still be standing?
@@american_cosmic California is a disgusting disaster area thanks to your moronic governor.
Fun Fact. The only two Olympics that turned a profit were the two that were held in Los Angeles.
Short people and friend in me are good songs but FYI it's still sunny ☀️ everyday in L. A. So don't hate appreciate the warmth ✌🏾
I was born in Santa Barbara county, just a smidge n of LA.
Living in Mississippi when this one hit, I totally went back to LA, in my mind.
Short People was the first Randy Newman song I ever heard. 👍
Randy is a genius. Nuff said.
Really good song!!! I use to Love L.A. Really different now.....good reactions.....Jay & Amber & Family must visit L.A.!!! You will never forget the second largest city in the world!!!!
I just LOVE this Randy Newman song! Esp love that video.
I have lived in southern CA for over 40 years, lived in L.A. area for seven of those years, and, I have to say that it wasn't my favorite place to live, but, the city is unbelievably big. The traffic is the most congested and scariest you will probably ever see. I love the song, but the city is eminence.
I love this song because everytime the Dodgers win right after the last out they play I Love LA at Dodger stadium. GO DODGERS!
I live in L.A. , specifically Hollywood. I love L.A.!
I lived up Beachwood Canyon for several years but had to move away. It was the best time in my life and I really miss it.
Wang Chung has a song called, To Live And Die in L.A. that was the theme of the 80's movie of the same name.
Right, but a very different vibe of a tune. Yes?
@@jrox6091 Definitely a different vibe.
I think this is one of the most fun music videos in the history of American pop music.
That wasn't Leslie Nielson, that was the great Enrico Pallazzo
@@nikaltesla9400 YOU ARE RIGHT!.....My bad!!! 🤣
Major Toto sighting. I caught Steve Lukather, David Paich & Jeff Porcaro. They also play on the tune. No surprise.
I think some members of Toto were part of every top 40 rock song in the 80s.😅
@@froggy5935 Very true.
Boston loves this song
Amber, since you enjoy his voice, Randy Newman is a flat out genius, don't let the vibe fool you.
Watch some of his live performances
The Stuttgart Jazz Open 2006 is a great start, it s avail on the plaform
He's a masterful story teller.
As a So. Cal. native I have to say this video makes LA & Hollywood look way more fun and romantic than in real life. At least the weather is nice 😊
I lived in LA when this came out. (Worked at channel 9). It was huge!
This is definitely 80's L.A. ... unfortunately it's not the same today.
Randy is an amazing writer and performer! One of my favorites, with a dry sense of humor. Check out Short People!
Born and raised in LA county. This song was a sense of pride back in the day.
Still is.They play it after every Dodger's victory.
in the day! LA has sucked for 15 years now. It's horrible. Do NOT be proud to be from LA!
@@kevinminne1460Dude it's home and some very good people. Save your hate for something that actually deserves it. Always be proud of where you came from and never ashamed. Damn good tune and proud LA native.
@@Rebel-cd6gcYES! 👍👍Proud L.A. girl here! Every big city has problems. People should be the change they want to see instead of complaining about how bad things are.
@@kevinminne1460fu c you! I’m proud to be from LA goofy
He wrote ,”Mama told me not to Come” for Three Dog Night.
'89 NBA finals, Game 7, they played this song so loud during a timeout you couldn't hear yourself think. It was amazing. I Love L.A.
Nothing better than Lakers games in the 80’s! I Love LA!
The entire Sail Away album is phenomenal.
This was in the movie the Naked Gun. When I hear it, I cannot help but see that, even as I see the video.
they hate us cuz they aint us... i Love LA. GARRR Cali makes the world go 'round
Ha. Wow. What a SURPRISE... SO GLAD YOU VIEWED THIS ... WELCOME TO 1983 BABY.....
Randy Newman wrote the title song for a quirky movie called "Cold Turkey" with Dick Van Dyke. The song is "He Gives You All is Love." A movie and song you should check out.
This song just epitomizes everything 80's!!!
Now you gotta watch „Down and out in Beverly Hills“!😂👍🏼
Went to college in NorCal and blasted this from my dorm window right after Gibson’s HR in ‘88. Good times…
I was born and raised in L.A. Like any big city it has its problems. But I still Love L.A.!
Classic, classic tune. If you can't be smiling through this, you're a robot! The video is nearly as good as the song itself. Randy Newman, such talent.
Randy has written a TON of songs, including "Mama Told Me Not to Come" from Three Dog Night!
For me, the song will always be associated with Lakers championship parades in the 80s. Randy also performed it live at the Lakers ring ceremony in 2002.
Nothing better than Lakers games of the 80’s!
I love LA too!
This song ( though it may be a cover) plays over the end credits of the movie “Volcano,” which came out about the same time as “Dante’s Peak.” It’s a fun song and movie.
My first motorway driving was in LA.Terrifying!❤ From England 🏴
I spent a week in LA with family. My uncle had gotten transferred out there in the late 70s/early 80s. He was one of the sweetest, calmest dudes you'd ever meet, but when he got out on the LA freeways he flipped a switch to beast mode which you basically have to do to survive.
Saw him in Nashville in ‘99! Such a great range of songs!!🤘🔥
He wrote it as a satire. That's why it's so funny to us locals.
can honestly say I have never loved LA or Kalifornistan
It's satire but it's still love, like we can insult it but nobody else can. Even better example is Cheech & Chong's take on it in "Born in East LA".
@SquirminHermanthe1eyedGerman AND, nobody cares. Stay out. We don't want toothless, low IQ hillbillies here anyway.
Amazing song!!
I first heard this as part of the soundtrack to 'The Naked Gun' movie
🙂 🙂🙂
Whenever the Dodgers win a home game, this song is immediately played in Dodger Stadium as soon as the game ends. If L.A. wins any World Series games at home this year and you’re watching the telecast, you’re sure to hear this playing in the background.
That’s our song!
Randy is a great songwriter and musician. Ilike that he makes it fun sometimes like Short People. He is not a tall man, and I loved that song. This song is so true, and I love it.
