Shepard and crew will typically destroy the Thorian at the end of the Feros mission in Mass Effect 1. But is it possible to save the Thorian instead and forge an alliance with this creature? The short answer is no - and we’ll explore the specifics in this video.
The Thorian is one of the most fascinating alien species in Mass Effect - which doesn’t receive much exploration after our initial contact with the creature in ME1. It is a unique lifeform, even by the standards of the Mass Effect universe, and it may be the oldest living organic species in the entire galaxy. It’s believed that the Thorian predates the Protheans and survived the last harvest which wiped out the Prothean people. This would make the Thorian at least 50,000 years old, and likely even older.
Commander Shepard and crew first encounter the Thorian on Feros, while the team is investigating reports of Geth attacks on the colony of Zhu’s Hope. While fighting through Geth units at the Exogeni Corporate Headquarters, Shepard meets Lizbeth Baynham, an Exogeni employee who reveals the truth about the company’s interest in the colony.
Zhu’s Hope was considered a failed project by Exogeni until the Thorian was discovered, hibernating beneath the surface of the colony. Exogeni quickly learned that this ancient plant life, dubbed Species 37, could infect other organic beings with airborne spores and condition them to do its bidding. Within a short period of time, 80% of Zhu’s Hope colonists were infected with Thorian spores, essentially becoming its thralls or slaves.
Through the spore infection, the Thorian is able to control its thralls by means of mental conditioning, using pain as a motivator. Whenever a thrall gets out of line, he is subjected to a great deal of pain until he begins to act as the Thorian wishes. A handful of colonists, such as Ian Newstead, are able to resist this means of control at great personal cost. But the vast majority fall in line.
When Shepard encounters the Thorian face to face, it speaks to us through an Asari clone. We discover how Saren made a deal with the Thorian. He provided one Benezia’s Asari commandos, Shiala, as a thrall to the Thorian in order to receive the Cipher, which is the shared experience of the Prothean people, absorbed by the Thorian over the course of thousands of years. Saren then betrayed the Thorian, ordering his Geth units to destroy the creature to prevent Shepard from gaining access to the Cipher.
Sensing that Commander Shepard was likely a threat, the Thorian coerced the Zhu’s Hope colonists into attacking the Commander. You can dispatch with the colonists by simply shooting them or using a non-lethal nerve agent to incapacitate them.
When you reach the Thorian it is in no mood to make any more deals, sending its minions to attack you instead. In order to complete the quest, you must destroy the Thorian nodes. Otherwise the doors that lead to the top of the tower will remain closed. In other words, you cannot save the Thorian; you must kill it in order to complete the Feros mission.
When the last node is destroyed, the Thorian plummets to its death, freeing the Asari thrall Shiala. Shiala will answer our questions about Saren and the Thorian before sharing the Cipher with Commander Shepard. At this point, we have the option to spare Shiala and allow her to remain on the colony or execute her because of her alliance with Saren. This choice has implications for a side quest on Illium in Mass Effect 2.

Suspicious as hell that every single time you interact with Shiala, over the course of years, she always drops in "oh yeah, Thorian's dead, definitely, don't worry about that". And the ongoing spore stuff and "health issues".

This question normally comes up because when you attack, the damage meter has two little arrows. This IMPLIES that you must get the damage within that range on all attacks to possibly "save" it. However, the doors will not open unless you destroy them. The fact that the arrows are THERE, implies that they originally may have planned on having a save option... but later changed their minds and just never got around to changing the UI and removing the arrows. It ends up, the arrows are useless and there is no option to save.

    • @icemythic6076
      @icemythic6076 3 роки тому +18

The arrows are there because the shutter door that Shepard overloads to cut the Geth Ship claw attached to the Exogeni building has them. A similar bar is used when you are trying to get the PSI to the sweet spot.
It's a bug that doesn't happen if you load a save after that part
I believe. Also I'm fairly sure it's fixed in the Legendary Edition

Aim your grenades for the center of any group, then detonate them for best effect (don't wait for them to explode on their own, you'll lose effectiveness). There's also a cache to refill your grenades when you get out of the tunnel system.

I’m just perseverating on the timeline piece here: but it’s likely to be 100,000 years instead of 50,000 due to the fact that the prothians disappeared 50,000 years ago, and it’s roughly 50,000 years later when the reapers come for humanity in the current cycle. The Thorian predates the Prothian and thus would’ve come from one cycle before that. Kind of like a great grandparent, thus it would’ve been double the length of time from the Prothian’s extinction.

The way Shiala describes the situation in ME2, it sounds like she has taken on the abilities of the Thorian, but she is also still affected by the Thorian mind-control ability. It's hard to understand if the writers were conveying that she has become the new Thorian and the "Pain" she feels is kinda like the way the Thorian experiences self-preservation instincts - OR - if the Thorian is still alive and controlling the entire colony.

The thorian could've been a great weapon against the Reapers, if some sort of accomodation could've been arranged. For example, it being intelligent, reasoining that slaving "our" people was not acceptable but that "we" will willing provide whatever it needs and in exchange it will allow us to research it and use its abilities against the reapers, specifically to protect people against indoctrination. And also the Thorian can work as a scholar to earn resources of its own from the wider galaxy, tp eventually become a productive member of galactic society during peace time and an example of how this cycle is very different from the previous, as even completely "alien" sentient organisms can have positive relations with the more common humanoid species.
Maybe this si too "Star Trek" of me, but Shepart did try to establish an arreangement, if not for the Thorian being jaded for the betrayal it suffered from Saren.

Feros in general raises so many questions. It's a dead Prothean city, with hints of at least one additional layer of another even-older civilization below that. Presumably, both city layers were wiped out by the Reapers, but then there's the Thorian hanging out there, old enough to remember the Protheans' last days.
The Thorian doesn't look like it belongs there, but also acts like the Protheans were newcomers. It also doesn't seem particularly inclined to build structures or equipment - at least, other than stuff its mind-controlled slaves use, like giving Shiala clones body armor and handguns - so it doesn't seem likely it would have bothered building cities. The shaft it's suspended in looks industrial, so it doesn't seem likely the Protheans were researching it in a lab, and it overgrew its containment after the Reapers swept through. Shiala and the VI mention the part of the Thorian that Shepard drops into the pit is more or less just the thing's brain, but the thing has tendrils that go for miles throughout the ruins, so I suspect it was something the pre-Prothean civilization created or discovered.
With that in mind, the most interesting possibility is that it was the Thorian, not the Reapers, that destroyed the pre-Prothean civilization. No matter what the setting is, it's never easy to deal with an uprising of mind-controlled fast zombies.

I disagree with that last argument that the Thorian itself would not have made a good ally. True, it would be a threat to any allies, but if handled correctly, could be used to potentially make a limitless army. The power to clone lifeforms could be used to make cannon-fodder or even an elite army of the best Specters, STG, or Asari Commandos could make an effective force to holding Reaper forces back. Obviously, these forces couldn't be controlled by anyone but the Thorian, who could always decide to switch sides(through its own will or Reaper indoctrination). Also, the Thorian spores could be a good way to counteract Reaper indoctrination. Reapers have to be somewhat close to their target to warp their mind. When Saren and The Illusive Man were away from the Reapers, they could start to fight their indoctrination. But Thorian spores will stay with the victims for presumably the rest of their lives. If the Illusive Man ever got a few Thorian spores on him, we can assume that the Thorian's will would be stronger than the indoctrination. If they could even just make the spores themselves by studying the Thorian, they could find a way to control their own people without them being thralls of the Thorian.

I think Shiala's message in ME3 is like that sinply because of oversight. You could potentially miss her on Illium in ME2 which is why she explains that the Thorian is actually dead. I think that the dev team meant to put in something to acknowledge that Shepard already met her back on Illium in ME2.
