  • He is a South Korean artist, best known for his hyper-realistic portraits. His works depict photo-realistic images of figures that are either historic or mythical, creating a confusion between the reality and the simulation of the reality. He has made several TV appearances and numerous public lectures, all of which were devoted to the enhancing of the public’s familiarity with either Fine Art in general or the concept of Hyper-reality in a sociological sense. He is currently based in Seoul where he regularly runs workshops on realistic painting and classes on the history of Art. He is ceaselessly creating his trademarked Hyper-realistic portraits and his works are being shown in various galleries in and outside the country. Impressionism is my passion but ... wow, his work is so admirable and so beautiful that it should be more recognized.

Wow I was so confused when I read about hyper-reality but this talk made it so clear. This was mind blowing and I loved the way he delivered it also with the paintings.

The issue with hyperreality is that it captures the ability to interact with reality. With the real one can interact with it in a multitude of ways, but one can only interact with the image of the hyperreal. In other words the hyperreal frames the possibilities of how one views it. The hyperreal is more of a real reflection than reality. The suggestion is that maybe the absurd rules of society and oppressive forces are a reflection of what we really want.

I really like the talk and all the ideas in it are very inspiring. However, to be the devils advocate: Baudrillard might have said that the problem is not that we lose the real but that we lose our imagination. If you look into yourself, you won't find any real real that is independent of the society you are thrown in. The self is always already a construction, a Imitation of some sort and that is ok. The problem with hyper-reality, as I understand it, is that it fixes the imitation. It basically eradicates ambiguity by offering a hyper-real sign that is real. We imitate advertisement not because we lost some real self but because advertisement is real (in that sense that it does not represent anything else). Our cultural believes, on the other hand, are imaginative, ambiguous and "fake".
