Another factor to make Big Z the GOAT is that he competed against Pudz, Shaw, and Thor.
Exactly my thoughts. Take any one of these out and move the standings around to see who wins. It would absolutely shake things up. An absolutely fantastic era of great strongmen.
They mentioned that, that kind of worked against him. He competed past his prime which lowered his % wins.
And eddie hall
The win/podium list on his Wikipedia page is a mile long. To be that strong at that level for that long is an incredible feat.
@@bossness12 Eddie lol. Eddie has 1 major win ever.
With all the popularity that Eddie, Thor, and Brian have, a lot of people don't even understand just how good Big Z is
Eddie Thor and Brian when they win a big show: *use it to build their personal brand*
Big Z: “I am very happy” *adds trophy to giant wall of trophies*
@@lynxvoid9977 Bro would show up to Worlds off a 4 week prep, get first, then hop on a plane to compete in some random national level comp and set another world record
GOAT, and it's not even close
Brian is equally good and above Eddie and Thor. You must be a newbie i guess
@@prasannjitkumar780 WTF are you talking about? Did I say Brian wasn't better than Eddie and Thor?
Now I'm imagining the Shahlaei household looking like the Charlie Day meme with boards and pictures and string and Loz coming down at 3am to see Liz, filled with coffee and energy drinks, 3 calculators in hand, hundreds of tabs of spreadsheets, staring at him and saying "Now, hear me out..." and Loz just turning off the lights and going back to bed.
This is embarrassingly accurate 😂
Hooper, with 18 straight podiums, is surely climbing the list.
It was interesting to see that he was up there for major wins but didn't feature for event wins. The guy is an extremely cerebral competitor but knowing when to hold and when to fold is always going to hurt him when it comes to event wins.
@@maluatuavene9921 You have a point but he didn't make the list for event wins because he's only been competing for a couple of years.
@@crazy10bears, well he’s had a lot more competitions than most guys though, so that should cancel it out. Hooper, up until recently didn’t really win events unless it’s a yoke or something. He always made a top 5 result to keep himself in contention and more often than not, it was enough for the win.
@@gotzvonunentberlichingen1452 Hooper has competed 19 times. That is absolutely not more than most. Of course he didn't get a lot of wins in his first year. Who does? That said, Hooper did win his very first event in international competition and he won 3 of 5 events at WSM 2023 after only competing for 1 year.
@@gotzvonunentberlichingen1452 Actually, looking over Hooper's record, he's got a lot of event wins for a first year competitor. It's quite exceptional.
Really interesting video, would love to see a similar set of lists for "strongest of all time" where you look at either max lifts in competition, or most event wins in a particular type of event, e.g. stones, yoke, loading, etc.
Pound for pound list would be cool, too
Would be Thor. It was posted as a comment in another big Loz video.
I love how Eddie doesn't make any of those lists. You're making Colin cry, Liz!
Well Eddie did some awesome and great things in he's short strongman career, he was even able to beat Z, Shaw and Thor but he doesnt have much titles that would give him place here what was the point now ✌🏻
Eddie's place is one of the strongest ever list 👍🏻👌🏻
Eddie was incredible, his 500kg deadlift will be remembered for the rest of strength sport history. But he lacked longevity. 1 WSM win, no Arnold wins either. He was great but hard to consider him as one of the GOATS
His static peak wasn't long enough for him to win much
The issue with this list is it does not factor in showmanship which is part of strongman. Eddie would be high up on that list.
@@aeis3007fair point.
Love how Liz has audited the sport 😂
Her knowledge of Strongman history is breathtaking.
@@9256steven probably your English isn't that strong otherwise you would know the meaning of breathtaking
Love the method. Not a bad final list either.
Z, Shaw and Pudzian are definitely the top 3. Everyone else can be discussed for the remaining spots.
It’s Z then everyone else tbh
Love these analytical videos.
Best Tournament Strongman...I totally agree...
Bill Kaz should have an asterisk on the first list as He was the ONLY Strongman denied more WSM activity..
The only guy to strong for the competition
@Devou1s so Kaz would have you believe. But there were other factors one of the chief amongst them being his temperament
Bill Kaz was denied participation on WSM due to his dominance...
@@ismaelgonzalez2432 How do you know? That isn't the only story I've heard. But I wasn't there and I have no idea.
I disagree. Imho WSM does not deserve its own list because:
- to this day to athletes that commit doing their Giant Live shows get a leg up at WSM: easier groups and events as we saw multiple times now
- several years are under a corruption or favouritism cloud,
- several years they didn’t hold WSM, and
- some people were even banned to compete (e.g. Bill Kazmeier as he was “too dominant”!)
- etc.
I appreciate Liz's analytical mind. The combination of stats plus strength is why I enjoy strongman.
"Derek Poundstone should always be talked about as---Alright, next list then."
Yep He's In My Top 10
Nice to see a honest genuine breakdown where Eddie hall fans don’t just always relate back to the 500kg deadlift. What he did was amazing but in terms of this he was never gonna be in the top 10 because on paper he only ever won wsm once and a few britains strongest man titles. No disrespect it’s just nice to see a video where it’s not always going back to the deadlift and that’s all
Yeah, I didn’t event try to incorporate world records into its own list because there are SO many in Strongman and a lot of them would be very hard to verify. I think if it was a list purely looking at the strongest ever in the sport then Eddie would definitely be on it, but it makes sense he’s not on this list given the data we were looking at. Tom didn’t even make the list as a 3x wsm champion (I think he was 11th or 12th) which feels wrong, but then I guess it comes down to the argument of how much extra weight that title holds.
And strict pressed the axle WR but I do agree that he doesn't stack up
Well i guess nobody, even only Eddie fans would think he is one of the greatest.
Yes he did great and awesome things but there is just not many titles to get this list and it's understandable.
One of the strongest ever 👍🏻
Eddie's static strength definitely was second to none. Probably strongest person ever in terms of pure static strength.
He chose to sacrifice his legacy for his health and his family
Smart man if you ask me.
Loved this breakdown! I think the final list is pretty good. Mariusz needs to be in the GOAT discussion, at least.
I love how fired up Big Loz gets in the intros 😂 i feel the same way brotha!
The final list is bang on. Top 4 I would say is the perfectly correct order too. For Bill to make the the top 10 despite being banned by WSM for years speaks volumes. He could have had the most WSM wins out of anyone if they hadn't done him dirty. I think it is correct to not include Tom on that list, he's so inconsistent. Good video.
Marius is the most impressive to me. He did this with a six pack!!
And most of the other guys had a keg! 😅
Pudzianowski was the best at running with heavy objects, which was what WSM was all about when he was winning, and that is also why those are his only major wins.
Love the system and fav thing about it is Derek Poundstone being amongst it.
Peak Poundstone was always the favorite to win in his era and has beaten great versions of Zydrunas in real heavy power competitions. Too bad his career got cut short due to injury.
If anybody is curious, here's what you get if you use strongman scoring on the five lists as if they were events in a competition, giving zero points for being off the list.
Big Z: 48
Mariusz : 46
Brian Shaw: 33
Hafthor: 26
Jon pall: 18
Hooper: 13
Magnus v Magnusson: 11
Jouko: 10
Bill Kazmaier: 9
Geoff Capes: 8
(Tom stoltman: 7, Oleksii: 7)
Thanks for doing this!
Very cool, thanks for doing that!
Thanks for that
👌🏻
That was a great idea for a list and I really like the way that Top 10 turned out too.
Definitely agree with the top 3, not sure about the order, they all deserve a number one spot in their own right. It being growing the sport, just the sheer amount of comps, or the domination in the sport. Love the approach!
This may be one of my favorite videos that you've ever put out!
this list is a lot better than any other i have seen. the different categories are well chosen. nice to think about jouko ahola again, who was if i'm not mistaken the lightest man to ever win WSM.
I think the top 5 is spot on, with the possible swapping of Brian and Pudz, but even that can be debated. But there's no debate about number 1. 🙂👍
To cut a long story short, Tom needs to find another gear more than once a year if he’s to have the kind of legacy he wants.
Totally agree. Love Tom, but he doesn't possess the intellect of hooper and others.
I'm not sure... He is definitely putting a stamp on the sport, but from an another angle. I absolutely love his presence, even though he doesn't perform all year round. And with the sport growing I think this is a good thing. Most aspects will come into play. We cannot look to just one or two guys being the ultimates anymore. The playing field is expanding and rapidly, and Tom plays his part in it.
Same. Love Tom but he could be a lot better. I hope I'll see it.
I almost feel like Tom knows winning WSM is the most lucrative win (based on sponsorships, endorsements, and publicity) and is satisfied with that. Maybe I'm wrong (frequently the case) but it's certainly possible.
Well, there is nothing wrong with being particularly good at one competition. He is already a legend with his current achievements, not everybody can be the GOAT. And you never know, he's still young.
You could have scored the final list the same way strongman is scored. 1st on a list is 10 points, last is 1, and not on the list is 0. Then ranked them by most total points.
I don’t know why the strongman scoring system didn’t occur to me 😂
@@mrsshahlaei451I would love to see the results of a strongman scoring system but I would also like it to include the top 20 to make it fairer for the competitors who were just outside the top 10 in the different categories.
I just did this with the information from the video out of curiosity:
Big Z: 48
Mariusz : 46
Brian Shaw: 33
Hafthor: 26
Jon pall: 18
Hooper: 13
Magnus v Magnusson: 11
Jouko: 10
Bill Kazmaier: 9
Geoff Capes: 8
(Tom stoltman: 7, Oleksii: 7)
Where is Derek Poundstone ?@@Tim_flips
@@Tim_flips I think I like that one better though it's a shame to lose Poundstone. I wonder if factoring in the top 20 would make much of a difference.
Great list, and I'm a Brian fan - and a Marius fan. If the contests could be reasonably weighted for quality, names and placings might shift a little. What 'quality' means could be the subject of other videos.
The most important factor is clearly how shiny your chest ist.
In different words, there is an inverse correlation between chest hair and WSM titles. According to Mariusz, that is.
Fantastic final list. Very well researched and reasoned.
Pretty solid list actually. You could argue this list just as equally as any other.
Best list I’ve seen so far!
I'd say it's pretty accurate.
Pudz gets a hard time because of the IFSA split but he was a beast of an athlete, and a precursor to Hooper in that his sheer athleticism was second to none as well as being crazy strong.
Brian and Big Z are obviously going to be in the top 3. Thor ought to be top 5 for sure, but I'm impressed he still got there despite often being outshone by the big 2 and then retiring right as he peaked.
I don't know enough about Ahola to judge if he should be there.
A little surprised not to see Capes on the list. I think he suffers in an analysis like this due to being second/third to Kaz and JP a lot during his career - the Kielz of his day I suppose.
Hooper will be more like Pudz than Z I think - he'll dominate for 5 years or so, then step away to focus on other ventures once his legacy as a true GOAT is established. I fully expect him to be in the top 5 in the next couple of years regardless of how it's scored.
There might be mor lists to add to the final result, but i love the method you use. 💯
Zydrunas is going to top almost any list of most successful or best strongmen. I came up with a system that rewards international wins, appearances at big shows and podium points at big shows. Under my system, big z has more than double the points of number 2, who is Brian Shaw of course with number 3 being a tie between Thor and Mariusz. All these numbers are as of the end of SMOE 2024. I plan on making a video going deep into this pretty soon. I might wait until the Rogue as that will put Thor over Mariusz and may boost up Hooper and Tom as well to be more accurate for the year as a whole.
Do go into this with how you weight different events/shows/placements
i think all the list makes sense and to give a concrete answer is hard but you cant deny facts about win% total wins and major wins, is important stats.
this was a fun way to do it fo sure.
Liz metrics are on point, i liked the reasoning behind for me is a good way to start the conversation.
Kaz got screwed ! He wasn't even invited because nobody could challenge him for something like 5 years . He certainly could have won 5 and no one ever mentions this fact .
Could have but didn't. Thats why nobody mentions it
Hard to say. Jón Páll was coming in strong at that time and absolutely walked over Bill at Pure Strength in 87. Of course Bill is older but the dominance from Jón shows that we missed out on a hell of a wsm competition from them!
It's his story that he wasn't invited because he was too strong.
@@hallurs Bill Kazmaier was just making his comeback at Pure Strength and wasn't in great shape yet and was quite llight while Jon was at his heaviest and strongest. At their peak Kazmaier was certainly the stronger guy in every static lift, while Jon was the better athlete with few weaknesses.
He actually did compete with Geoff Capes and Jon Pall Sigmarsson in the World Muscle Power Classic during that time and lost to both men in 1985 and 1987. (Kaz beat them both in 1988) WMPC was also a competition ran by Douglas Edmunds, and later Jamie Reeves same as WSM and eventually IFSA when they split.
That being said, Kaz certainly could have won 4 or 5 titles. In 1989 had he not been injured he may have even won a 4th title there but I also think too many people sell Capes and Sigmarsson short when they talk about Bill's absence. They were both great athletes and deserving champions.
Really good video, enjoyed your analysis
What a fun way to make such a list! You could make a new video like this with different systems and lists every week and I'd watch em all lol
Interesting take on the top ten, just going by the numbers. Cheers!
I would love to see something that took into account podium finishes. Surely someone who won 9 and took silver in 9 is competitive with someone who won 10 but had no other podium finishes.
The "most major" list sounds the most accurate to me. As a fellow mathematician i really enjoy these videos Liz. Keep it up!
TOPIC FOR A VIDEO: Right up your alley I think😂. Maybe do a video about how strongman works, point system, why certain events are picked, judging criteria and whatever you guys think the ‘newbies’ need to know about competition. Cuz seems like there are quite a few people upset about results and how someone can win 5/8 events and not win overall. People crying about judging and calls don’t seem to know the history of strongman as a sport apart from individual athletes.
I think this is a solid list. Great job on the analytical analysis!
This was really really good way of getting a good list. Love the balanced way 🙂👍
Kaz should get an honorable mention for his absolute dominance which got him blackballed from WSM.
I would love to see a list of "event wins percentage"(major shows only). But props to Liz for sharing her Lizcience.
I agree with the logic behind all this actually, brilliant aunty Liz! haha XD
I think in debating the top ten this method should be employed then with your final list we can debate the other finer points and move guys around.
Personally my top 5 would be close to that.
1. BIG Z 2. BRIAN SHAW 3. MAGNUS VER 4. THOR 5. MARIUS
Liz is a Data Analyst. Love it
This was a super fun video! On that final list I’d keep all those names, but drop Mariusz to 4th, Bill up to 6th, and Mitch up above Derek and that would pass my sniff test for the GOAT list. So Z, Brian, Thor, Pudz, JP, Bill, Mitch, Derek, MVM, and Ahola in that order.
That was Fun as Hell! Great Lists 👍👍👍
Assuming Thor didn’t take his time off. Which means he would have still been competing in “peak” strength. Likely not injured his pec. Liz’s numbers would be crazy. People question Thors status due to longevity. Those couple of years would deff help cement that, but he still has more years to give. Oh, plus all the WR he holds in various events as well.
I love the debate and i love the chemistry. Thanks for a great video.
Considering most of those listed have 10 to 15 years competing and you are only adding total wins, with Mitch only having 3 years of shows in and still making 7th, he has lots of time to catch up. At the rate he is winning, if he stays injury free he should top this list in about 5 years.....
Hooper didn't have to face Fullthor yet. Let's see if Hafthor goes Fullthor
@@eladrio2311 or prime Z or Brian, who Thor did have to face and are the only reason Thor isn’t number 1
@@jaket2274 I agree, but of that list only Thor is still competing and can fight with Mitch that's why I've only mentioned him
Mitchell split jerks. He'll never top the list of strongest
I don’t know if we will ever see full Thor again, his pec injury seems to have gutted his pressing ability
Mariusz was so dominant when I was in high school early 2000. He had a relatively short career but 70% win ration is insane. He is no where near the pure strongest like Eddie, Big Z, Thor & Brian which is why he didn't win the arnolds, but in certain events he was unbeatable.
If by "pure" you mean static / set piece strength and high-end/low rep big 3 lifts ... then yes... but then arguably u need to start looking at powerlifters who have all beaten lifts by Z/Hall/Thor/shaw etc...
Fun list. I would certainly have Shaw at #2, and Kaz needs to be moved up, BUT how fun is the debate?. Great job!
I love this. it tickles the statics nerd part of my existence. now if you could quantify how much someone has contributed back into strongman or helped progress the sport of strongman and add that into the mix then you really would have a top ten list.
This was fun. You've been the "influencers" that got me closer to the strongman sport and history. Somehow being into it makes me stronger in many different areas of my life! Thanks a lot for all you do for this community. ❤👋
You know, I think personal lifting records should be taken into account as well as how influential they were in their respective eras
Overhead pressing and deadlifts are the two that most try to set world records in
Do we count just strongman comp lifts or gym lifts also?
That was Eddie Hall's bone of contention with Thor's 501kg deadlift.
Personally I dont care as long as it can be proved that the person did lift the weight claimed.
Fun video: I created a grand prix style points tally for a different (mostly similar result) based on your 5 list:

The stuff y'all come up with is amazing.
This is an excellent, comprehensive analysis and has given a great top10 that i pretty much agree with
# of world records would be a interesting video. Big Z and Thor have dozens
Another interesting lens you could look at is points gaps. Would need an asterisk for back in the day when 1st got more points/they gave stones double points etc
Number 1 is correct. I can't see how it can be argued any other way. Two, three, and four. Should for sure also be in those places. Personally I'd put Brian at 2 though.
These lists show how overrated Eddie Hall is by most of the fans/community, not on a single list. I guess if you put in a list about breaking world records he would be on it. Big Z would be number one on that list as well though ;-).
😂😂😂😂 yeah no
Nice strongman nerd video to watch while eating breakfast. I guess im a strongman nerd, i like these sort of videos.
I think the top 4 is pretty accurate and interchangeable.
This is as close to “the science” as I have seen in a few years. I agree with this list. Follow the science!!
I think the list is pretty spot on - the top 3 are perfect for sure, then the others could maybe change around a little, Kaz of course may be a little higher than that...but overall it is hard to argue with the methods used to put this together.
The top 4 really wasn't a surprise. But the rest of the list was very interesting big z will always be the goat
For me, subjectively for many reason, numer one always is Pudzianowski. Objectively probably Savickas.
Enjoyed that. Thanks. Not saying I agree with the exact top 10 spots , but even if just Kaz and Poundstone swapped positions, it's actually a pretty accurate representation. Glad to see my favourite Jon Pall in the top 5. Personality alone should qualify him!
Obviously not a hundred percent but those were some great lists and I love how you came up with that last bit.
Love seeing Ervin Katona up there, he's a guy you don't hear enough about and I never think we saw the best of. Tarmo Mitt was another dude I never thought got to where he could have been in competition but showed some exceptional strength about that same time.
Jouko Ahola, Derek Poundstone and the winner of my favorite WSM year, Janne Virtanen was cool too see on these lists as well.
But the big name that people need to recognize is Mitch Hooper.
We, right now, have a guy who is one of the best strongmen of all time and is just getting started. We are incredibly fortunate and I can't wait to see him take some more wins.
Tom could squeeze out some more wins under the right circumstances as well and a HEALTHY Oleksii Novikov could add some pressure on both these guys if he would just take some time off, get refreshed and come back on point.
My list would be totally biased and I don't think there is really an accurate way to make a definitive Top 10 but I think that final Top 3 is fair.
1. Zydrunas Savickas
2. Marius Pudzianowski
3. Brian Shaw
Love seeing Derek poundstone up there representing Connecticut!!! Such a great strongman!!!
Great lists and methodology! :)
couldnt help but notice Eddie is not on a single list
Lovely to see isn't it
He won wsm once and had a poor ASC performance. He broke a couple WR and perhaps would have had more success as a power lifter rather than strongman. He was always to slow or unable to keep up in the cardiovascular events
And to be fair I’m in the camp that thinks Eddie didn’t win wsm fairly.

Such an awesome video for number nerds like me. Thank you, Auntie Liz!
Comparing the weights they lifted and the number of world records they held would be fascinating as well
Great Video your list contains 8 strongmen that I thought would be top 10. Well done! Thanks for putting in the time to do this.
This video is very interesting because you are illustrating a common issue in statistics, machine learning, operational research and artificial intelligence: how do we choose the right evaluation function? Essentially this means that the best choice, or more generally, the ordering depends on the evaluation you are choosing, and there is no perfect evaluation.
The order on the final list might not be perfect in my opinion, but I think Liz's system was really good! Love seeing Oleksii make a couple lists.
great and fun video! thank you!
My unscientific top 10 from the heart:
- Z
- Shaw
- Pudzianator
- Fullthor
- Kaz
- Hooper
- JP Sig
- MVM
- Edward
- Albatross
But if you took those 10 and a time travel machine and grabbed them all at their peak and put them together in a comp similar to SMoE:
- FullThor 2018
- Z 2014
- Shaw 2015
- Hooper 2024
- Edward 2017
- Albatross 2024
- Kaz 1982
- Pudzianator 2008
- MVM 1996
- JP Sig 1990
Not a bad list. I think it would definitely depend on the events

Great video!
Yes, 100% behind this method as a Business Analyst. Cannot argue with data. I would love to see the same being done for World Records but that would be so tricky due to different variations on the same lifts.
3 thoughts to consider, though:
1.
As several times already mentioned in the video in the olden era there were less comps so athletess from older era are clearly disadvantaged and therefore different eras cannot be compared.
2.
I mean, until a few years back only WSM and the Arnold’s classified as “Major Comps” so this definitely needs to be corrected (which mathematically is doable), and
3.
WSM does not deserve its own list because:
- to this day to athletes that commit doing their Giant Live shows get a leg up at WSM: easier groups and events as we saw multiple times now
- several years are under a corruption or favouritism cloud,
- several years they didn’t hold WSM, and
- some people were even banned to compete (e.g. Bill Kazmeier as he was “too dominant”!)
- etc.
@@tonywalther67 Absolutely agree. Impossible to come up with any metric that puts them all on the same playing field. So much changes over the years. for what it's worth, I don't think too much about the GOAT title. In my mind, they are all part of a collective of "Strongman" that motivates and inspires me. Even some of the less accomplished athletes with moments of passion will motivate me more than some WSM wins.
Excited to see how well Mitchell Hooper does in future competitions.
Loz is in great shape these days, man!!
I wholeheartedly agree big Z, Shaw, and Pudzianowski are top 3 greatest all time!!
I love Auntie Liz’s Lists. ❤
I actually quite like this list. It isn't exactly how I would put my personal list, but I think it's not a bad representation of the sport.
Modern era Mitch Hooper
All time Big Z

Nice to see Avairs on there.
Lots of under estimated people who have made a big impact.
Just finished a lower body workout and my legs hurt. Watched this video to relax me and now my brain hurts. Thanks aunty Liz and Uncle Loz lol.
I'd say you're right with 1 & 2, but i really cant make my mind up on number 3.
I think Mark Felix deserves a special place considering how long he was in the game, his age when competing and the fact that at my peak of strength i was nowhere near where he is as almost a pensioner, he was incredible really.
Here is the true list:
1. JF Caron
2. Martins Licis
3. Mateusz Kieliszkowski
4. Big Z
5. Thor
6. Terry Hollands
7. Big Loz
8. Bobby Thompson
9. Mitch Hooper
10. Derek Poundstone
Can't imagine a fairer way of doing this off the top of my head, so good list, even if some names are missing that you might expect
Not going to lie, i love how thorough Liz is with the thought she puts into these rankings. You can disagree with how she does it, but you can't say she half assed it!
