I would love to have gotten that thing together I had new bearings for it and the cylinders looked great! Which surprised me. After all it sat totally submerged for 2 weeks. Those older mercs rock. good tutorial
Like what I saw out of your videos, you've got good presentation. My first boat, 1979 Thunderbird F-18 with 78 Merc 900 90 hp. Everything was rotted practically, I did everything you've done short of rings. Had ordered a defective CDI trigger from Ebay But the boys in Huntsville shipped me a replacement one for free. Good guys, Im going to try and fire her up again. man its been a saga. I just want to murder fish. I want to thank you so very much for taking the time doing what you did for the rest of us who cant till we saw you, do.
Nice 1150. Have a '77 Merc 1500 on a Ranger 1850 Fish N' Play. Boat and motor have less than 150 hours on them...like brand new. A few things to think about: 1) Replace water pump impeller if motor left sitting a long time. Replace mine every year to two years in addition. 2) Don't over rev on ear muffs. 3)High Octane is your friend-you can burn a piston on the crap gas we have today. Any other questions, let me know. Good luck, it's a GREAT motor if taken care of properly.
RazorNbv Hogwallup I came across this video coz i have a 1979 mercury hp90 looks the same as this video, i hope u still have the pdf owners manual that u don’t mine send it to me, my email is t_s_falcon@hotmail.com I appreciated it
OK my friend - it is scooped up and in the back of my Subaru! A real nice '92 Merc, super clean, fresh water engine, w/power tilt, oil injection, but alas, no compression on #4 although it is said to run ok - just no power...now the fun begins! First I have to build a stand for the 200# beast! Also did noe come with any controls, so have to finess that somehow.
Awesome vids man. I would live to salvage a couple power heads and build one good one out of them. I had a 92 merc 150 that riped the transom of the back of some guys boat. It sat under water for two weeks. My buddy that owns a marine shop gave it to me complete with no controls. It was seized but got it freed up. I tore into it. All the crank journals had rust pits where the bearings sat. I ended up finding a new crank but it turned out it was the wrong one. I ended up parting it out. To bad:(
I've got the 90hp version of this. Your idle does sound high. I'm rebuilding my carbs now with the SELOC manual and your video. Thanks! My motor sat for at least ten years and basically fired right up, but on the water, it bogged down when I hit the throttle. I'm hoping it's a float issue... What tach did you install and was it hard?
I see a clean looking 45hp Merc on CL with no compression on one cylinder at a good price - maybe tomorrow I'll go get it...if it's still there! Now that I've had such a good training course I feel confident - and know someone to ask about stuff! And remember - you can smoke when yer OLD! (other things not so much!)
Got her all back together .. all electronics functioning .. great spark coil n plugs .. battery charged .. turns but she wont start. Primed carbs (no Choke connected) .. I did replace stator .. is it possible my timing is off and that is why she won't start? Sprade quick start into 1st cylinder and put plug back in .. won't even caugh like she wants to start ? Any Help out there Brothers? Thanks
Hey mate I have the same motor as this. Love your videos and these motors. Just after your advice mine has good compression, new plugs fresh fuel and carb screws are 2 turns from seat. Wen it holds revs it hesitates and pops. What are your thoughts?
This could be a multitude of issues. I would check to make sure you dont' have any vac leaks anywhere first. You can idle the motor and spray some carb cleaner around seals to see if the idle changes. If it does change, then you have a leak somewhere. Also, rebuild your fuel pump! I have a vid on that. Does it do it all the time?
cturboaddict Ok thanks will rebuild the pump this weekend and try te carb cleaner on the seals. I took a little video of my issue I will copy the link at the bottom. Yes it was running fine on the river and then started and now whenever it revs. Thanks for your help. ua-cam.com/video/NRo5PMZZp_8/v-deo.html
I know this is an old vid and not sure wbat the Good Doctor FM said about the long crank to start, but all 3 of my CDI distributor I6's took a LONG time to start cold. Hold the choke and giver. Lost as to why you kept feeding it fogging oil? Looked like it had a proper extra oil rich mix in it for a new startup...
What was the total cost just for the parts I have one and think im going to tare into it this coming winter just to freshen her up a little bit got to love the old tower of power
Ct., Just caught your vid looking for a way to avoid teardown on my own 1150. I see you also have a sidewinder. Motor sounds great ! Tom is the best ! Guy has a heart gold and a genius when it comes to these motors. I've got a basket case 1150 Tom tore down... cooked piston., wanna do something with it ? The 1150 on my boat now might be in jeopardy., heard some rattle @ WOT when I was out last. Trying to see if there'e a way to reseal the cooling gaskets or replace them before it's too late. Don't know for sure water is getting in the cylinder., but she still seems to run pretty good so maybe I can avoid a total rebuild. Any suggestions ?
abhvgas he sure told me after I mentioned the long crank. Lol If ya keep following along, you'll see me rebuild it as well. Fyi- motor is still running.
thx bro - good work - that's a useful vid. I have a '78 Mercury 70hp - 3 cyl. I think the link/sync concepts you show in your video on the 1150 are transferable to some extent to my engine, but if you have any helpful links or thoughts on my specific outboard, any help would be appreciated. First thing is to find the service manual. The pdf one available online sucks.
Thanks for the vids again. I have another couple of question my boat does the same in starting hard to firer up what cause that? Also when started in water I give it throttle it dies every time but on land with muffs on its fine what cause that to happen?
I have this same engine. Four years ago it was completely rebuilt at a cost of $3000. After every winter I try to start it and it's almost impossible. Also I'm a complete idiot when it comes to this engine. Am I even starting it right. I push button on lever and push down all the way on throttle, then I hold down choke button and turn key. It cranks and cranks but doesn't fire up! I have new gas in the tank and the ball is pretty hard but not 100%. Any advice please?
Mine started with a turn of the key after sitting all winter. NO CHOKE... :) Post a video of how you try and start it bud.... How I do it.. 1. PRIME BULB 2. Lift up fast idle lever 3. Push in key to choke 4. Turn key to crank 5. RUNNING 6. Lower fast idle lever once warmed.
I see some "happy dancing" going on. Nice job, I've seen a lot of youtube projects getting finished up lately, I wonder if showing off what your doing helps get things done.
You people don't know what your looking at , this guy is a hack .There is supposed to be two seals in the lower main cap . He also didn't replace restrictors and all pistons should at least be decarbonized. It's amazing to me he actually gets it running. Very dirty conditions . Wrong crank installation procedure ,and we wont mention the starter fiasco. I would not follow this guy's example ever . butcher!
Great videos. Any idea how to get set the clutch dog to align with shift lever? for 1979 Merc 115 outboard. Prop clicks in neutral now...I just replaced water pump
Lower unit is spring loaded in forward, drop lower unit, place throttle in forward position, reinstall lower unit and you should have all 3 “ gears “ working

20 seconds max on the starter, have to let it cool. Should idle about 750 rpm.
I've been watching your video's, on this motor I have 1978 1150hp she starts up in the drive way good but when in the water I have to crank a couple of times before she fire right up, and were would that pee hole be,also could I use some fuel/carb cleaner to make run better been sitting up since last year drian all the old gas out put new gas I and some seafoam, any ideas
hey boss my buddy has the same motor in the drive leaks water at the bolts like right at the water line not the pee hole but right at the bolts where the bottom end meets the top half of the drive
Derek Schiler the water line is probably not connected properly to the "pee hole" if he follows the pee hole up to the top of the powerhead you can see a 1/4" line going to where you described where the water comes out
Great videos! I have the same motor but can't find parts anywhere, I'm having issues with my tilt trim seals but can't find a seal kit also need new throttle cable.where can I find parts? Motor sound great!
So i need some suggestions on what i could do to fix my boat motor. Its a 1975 mercury outboard 115 hp inline 6. I just got the motor running last year after replacing all of the electronical components and wiring to it. This year i just unwinterized it and now im having issues with it having no acceleration power. Its only getting about a quarter of the power it has. I have cleaned the carborators, changed the spark plugs, rebuilt the fuel pump, replaced the ball pump, and had the timing checked and set. Do you have any idea what could be the issue or where i could even atart to look for the problem?
Nice video man. I have a 110hp merc outboard that runs good when it has spark. My spark is intermitten. It will run good and have spark one min then it wont have any spark the next. Whats your thoughts on what it would be? Thanks
I think they all have what is called a critical need detector. It can sense how desperate the operator is for the engine to start! Its the only component that never fails. All computers and printers have the same detector.
If you have the same controls as mine, there is a plug on the backside of the controls. You will have to buy the harness for it. Look on the controls towards the front of the boat. Do you see a plug?
It's a glorious blessing and a wonderful sound! (and if you don't quit smoking them nasty cigarettes I'm gonna kick yer ass so far up 'tween yer shoulder blades you're gonna have to take yer shirt off to shit!) Love, your surrogate Dad!
Thumb up brother. RIP starter u had a good run. Go towards the lite.........
The starter comments on this vid crack me up. Ya live and learn right.
Nice. I like the victory smoke and taking pics after getting her started. Good job. I am a sucker for reviving these old motors too.
That starter will glow cherry red... until the middle of next year..!
I would love to have gotten that thing together I had new bearings for it and the cylinders looked great! Which surprised me. After all it sat totally submerged for 2 weeks. Those older mercs rock. good tutorial

No problem, it's why I share the vids.
I rebuilt one of those about 20 years ago in the mid 90s. It was on a little 16 ft. dixie devil and it would really scoot when it was running good.
That's the trick, keeping them running good.
If anyone looking for ring clamps look up South Central outboard
Nothing sounds better then a Mercury.

RazorNbv Hogwallup Oh yeah, I have a .pdf version of the owner's manual if you are interested. I scanned it from the original that came with the boat.
RazorNbv Hogwallup I would love to see that bud. Cturboaddict@aol.com
Link coming your way.

Best engines on the Planet
Good old 2strokes
Dig the happy dance, good to hear it spinning!!!
awesome video love those old mercs I have a 85hp thunderbolt
Nice!
Okay my motor is sounding just like yours. But my RPM is under 2000. Now all I need to do is adjust my cables and rebuild my hydraulic pump.
That must have been a real good starter to take a beating like that.
Actually still starts now.
@@cturboaddict Then I need to buy one for my hard starting 150 where you bought that one.
@@brucegambill6303 dB electrical on eBay if I recall.
@@cturboaddict Thanks, I just bought a replacement winch motor from them.
@@brucegambill6303 I run their starter in my high compression stroker motor car too.
Well done good video.

I agree with Roy on the cigs. Liked the vid though. I didn't think it was going to start. LMAOF!

Hey I'm wondering how much run time have you clocked with her after all you did.
Jdeanie she's still running.
Totally. I just brought a 1400 back to life all with your help bro. Thank you so much
The connections are clean. Would the distributor give intermitten spark? I was thinking maybe the switch box...
Nice job dude!

There's a gas boost trick in place of choke. That's what the good doctor said.

It has been said, but easy on the starter.

remove cylinder and bring it to a place where they only rebuild cylinders, let them order the seals.
do you know the mixture for the two cycle
50 to one
Generally 50 to 1 , if synthetic oil then run 40 or 45-1
What was the original cause of the lost compression in 1 and 3? Broken rings?
I don't recall. No broken rings that I remember
Needs more water the impeller is sucking the hose flat

Sweet!
How did u hook up young tachometer I need to replace mine and know how to wire the motor would u do a short video on how to.
You can either hook it to the rectifier or to the plug on the control box. What controls do you have?

thank you
Fuck me that starter is sorry to ever have been assembled... the egyptian pharaohs didn't work their slaves that hard!
how do you tune up the cables and idle / spark stops?
Who is your contact in washington? I need some hard to find parts for this exact motor. Mine also needs a rebuild
Email me. My youtube name @aol.com
k is it 2 cycle I'm working on on and idk it is 4cycle or 2 cycle
6 cylinder 2 stroke (aka 2 cycle )
52:1 that’s the fuel mix you need for 2 strokes 6 cylinder
What state are u located in ?
Illinois
its aliiiiiive muhahahahaha, sweet!!
Excellent way to burn up a starter
Was still running when I sold it just fine.
feel bad for that starter
Ran for quite some time after that just fine.
youre going to burn the starter up cranking that long
how many turn out have the mixture carb needle
I think 1.5 from seat
what's the mix ratio
50:1 I would run 40:1 if I were you though
Anyone give me a good video or any info on hooking up new wiring harness for 1150 mercury motor inline 6
It's pretty straightforward bud. Do you not have a repair manual?
