Thanks a ton. I purchased a boat that has 1974 1150 motor on it. Performed a test run and it would not come up. Idling out of water it sounded great. Traced trouble to timing issue. Found and followed your video for timing set up and found several issues with my distributor. I would repair one issue, tried the set up and would find another. Finally tonight, I got all settings described in this video to line up like described. Can't wait to put some fuel to it tomorrow and see how it runs. Thanks for your research and sharing the knowledge you obtained.
+cturboaddict ok, i am still having issue with this. When doing the step with 5 deg advance, you mention the throttle arm should just touch the collar. My issue is, it is no where close. I have also changed the horse shoe spring and it is no better. the reason i changed spring, was the old one would not bring timing advance back down. i have adjusted the two screws you point out, i have them all the way advanced and still not even close. I can send pics if you want.
Thanks again for your detailed explanation on timing the 1150 Merc! And now I know what the “wanajama “ is! Lol I had no idea what that was ! 👍🙋♂️🖖🏻😂😅
***** yep already subscribed.! I reckon with all the good stuff you got on here I'll be able to keep the old girl running a lot longer yet... very easy to follow videos.!
***** Hi again mate.. I took my boat out today and when I first went out it started good as gold then when I put it in gear it kept stalling as soon as I hit the throttle... on the muffs good as gold but once in the water it keeps stalling.. Do you have any idea as to what could be doing this.? It takes a few a temps but once you finally get it past the stalling it still runs ok till the next time you stop.???
Just to let you know, I repowered my boat with a new motor. My 1984 1150 Mercury, which ran like new, was used as a trade in for the guy to mount the new motor. The ONLY thing wrong with it was the trim/tilt motor was AFU. Anyway, you could get the motor for a great price in Venice, FL. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll give you the contact info. I told him that I would let you know about it.
I am about to try this on my 1979 Mercury 1150. It currently has a hard time starting and shifting in to gear. It's crazy that you found a way to set the primary/secondary pick up without the boat being in the water... Lets hope it works for me!!
cturboaddict I have a carb spraying like a foot because as I now know the float leaks... last one to replace. But it started and ran, quit flooding at Higher idle. Sounds great but needs to have a new part obviously before I tweak any further. Anyway this is the boat my grandfather took us on in the 80’s when I was a kid, I finally got my brother to give it to me so it wouldn’t rot anymore, been working on it a year and I thought it was dead. It’s doing great. Fix one more float and I think we’re on the water. I had to adjust stuff basically as far as they go to even get to 20 degrees, so I’m glad that works. Thanks a ton. Life saver almost gave up. Sorry for the book.
Your awesome, I've been threw everything and couldn't get my 115 right but this timing vid was just what I needed. This is why we search UA-cam. Thanks
The man you call Dr Frankenmerc is a good friend of mine. I wish he lived closer to me (he's a couple of hours north). I can testify he IS *The* Mercury expert on the West Coast for the older Mercury motors. I'd trust him explicitly for ANY question on these great old motors!
Me too. We've made quite the friendship over the years. He is the man! Someday you should ask him about the custom transom brackets I made him for him and his wife. Matter fact, I'll probably text him today to see how he is doing!
well its on an old 15' thunderbolt Tri-hull and the tach is kaput.... waiting to get a new one in NY then I'll get to work on the carbs.... put a new rectifier in yesterday... hoping to be fishing by April
Dude this video was 👌 so detailed and well explained. If you still have the motor, you should do a video on how to Polish and reset the points. I've been trying to find a video on it.
I have a question. I have a 1968 1000. I currently have to raise the motor out of the water start the engine engage the transmission then lower the motor to get going the. she runs like a champ. but every time I start the engine and engage the transmission she stalls out. would this be a timing issue or a carb? She was running fine but now she's changed up on me. Thank you.
Thank you Boss from Boston, I got my 1974 850 85 hp engine timed, and it started right up, been trying to time it from the manual, did'nt work, let you know how it works in the Atlantic Ocean, thanks again, you the man!
Awesome thanks bro. Yeah that timing advance module on the back of thr front plate. Heard you dont even need it wired up. Havent tried but what I heard. Ill check it put thank ya
Hey buddy, I've watched more than a few videos of yours (I know they are old on this engine now but thanks cause I still have a lot of work ahead cause the carbs are pissing fuel plus all the problems a 40 year old engine has) and I've been reading all kinds of info on these engines and trying some forums but haven't heard much back yet so wanted to give you a try since I have to go back overseas soon. I'm back from working overseas and have a '78 900 (same ignition system) I'm working on for a family friend as a favor that has looked after me little brother after all these years (15+ years when I was away). I'm at the no spark event right now even though I've had it running many times and I can't figure out why. I've done the switch box/coil test and it always passes (I have a video under my name), added grounding cables like a bench test, but when I now try the trigger test I get nothing now. You say in your video you thought your trigger was bad but found out that it wasn't, do you know why? I might have the same thing, I think I've isolated the wiring harness by just jumping the red and white terminal on the switch box straight to the battery and ruled out the wiring harness at this point (which i think includes the stator and rectifier) and still get nothing when I try the test you have in your other video. But here you say you thought the trigger was bad from doing that test, but Doc FrankenMerc found out it wasn't, do you know why it failed this test but still turned out ok when he checked it?
@@cturboaddict Holly crap, thanks for the quick reply on a 6+ year old video. I guess the thing that caught my attention was the 0:15 mark to the 1:10 mark in your video. I thought you mentioned that you thought you had a bad trigger in a good distributor that you wanted to switch to the bad trigger with good bearings distributor one but found out the trigger was ok and he just rebuilt the bearings on the bad one so you ended up with two good ones after just the bearing rebuild? And if not, in your experience if you do the trigger test like in your other video and it fails is it just done (I'm chasing gremlins but used your videos to do all my test and the trigger failed as I mentioned even though I ran it the night before)? Sorry man, not much info I've found on intermediate spark failure like I was dealing with and I don't have much time so appreciate the info you've shared. legend
@@dreemin4life If the trigger failed in the test, then time to get the trigger replaced. Unfortunately, I do not have a distributor rebuild video. CDI sells an ignition upgrade, but it is pricey. And I'm always on here answering questions. I haven't made any new vids in a while, but will. Currently have two other projects I'm working on now. A 37 Plymouth restoration and a 66 Mustang restoration.
Great video! I was wondering if by any chance you might know where the thermostat and poppet valve location is... I can't see to find either one... Some people say there's no thermostat on this engine.. I don't know if it does or not, I was hoping you might know.... And if you might know where the poppetvalve is? That would be a lifesaver.... Thank you, I appreciate it...
great video. I have my mercury 500. I try it with your method. but no spark was found. my sparks only take place when the engine runs. The engine runs good.
Followed step by step. It’s still not starting. Spark is happening. Was running 2 weeks ago to I doubt it’s the carbs. I’m a little lost here. Any advice??
awesome man i was trying to do mine or at least check it after doing carbs been told to om it out however it reads through coil and doesnt work very well so much easier ur a life saver !!! ala cazam hahaha
Did you ever figure out why you didn't get spark with both distributors working? I had spark...rebuilt my carbs but now do not have spark. I did the trigger test...(jump wires and ground out to see spark) and got spark every time. Where can I get a new trigger if needed?
I have the same motor and i was wondering if you could show how the linkage to gear selector work because mine wont go into reverse(it doesnt clunk or make any noise) thanks
I have a 1976 1150 also your videos has helped a lot thanks. Have a question. When I put it in gear it dies. I set timing like you showed. Done all of the obvious plugs, cap, rebuilt fuel pump, cleaned fuel tank replaced fuel lines.
+Neil Samuelson if you've done all the above, i would say your engine is wore out. the only way to definitively know would be to perform a compression test
HIya, I know its been a long time But. I have a 1967 1100 ss and it doesnt have a decal for timing on flywheel. It does have 2 x white painting marks on the flywheel. Can you offer any tips or adjustments re tining on this motor. It is meant to be btdc at 36.5 degrees,Can you please tell me how to determine the correct BTDC please? Thankyou from Adelaide South Australia
it was strange the mototor was running great i shut the motor then 5 to 10 mins later i try to start i woul not start then may be i tought the cabs is dirty or stuck then i took the carb out ck put everything back then i check the spark plugs they were wet with gas /oil i probably did flooded the mototr out now i am off the timing and no spark at all in any spark plug i wonder because i am off the timing is that is y i am not getting spark ? thank you u r very helpful i was lost without ur video
Mate, this gold! I recently bought a 76 1500 and it doesn't idle that well but the throttle cable and all the adjustments are loose and out. This set it up really well. What sort of camera are you using for the vids? Thanks for taking the time to put it all on youtube. I'm going to give mine a thorough going over this winter (southern hemisphere)
Cool. At least I know that I don't need to get a timing light. :) I'm planning to do these steps this weekend and do the idle mixture adjustment on Wednesday. Hopefully I won't mess anything up.
my timing label is on the motor side not on the red flywheel? I understand how to do everything once the flywheel is set, but im not sure how to set it to the proper timing degrees. Any recomendations? it is the 1972 1150
I see 3 small holes drilled vertically in the flywheel now....I assume that is my pointer and line it up with the decal on the case where needed....Is this correct?
Can you tell me how your throttle control works with just one cable coming from the controls? Depending on how I attach it at the motor it will either shift or advance throttle but it will not do both. Does the throttle advance electrically or is it mechanical? Thank You
Hey i have 1 question bring the flywheel to 0tdc and match distributor arrow wit flywheel then u put the belt on and tight all the bolts then u did 5 cclockwise with flywheel ? i am litle confuse after 0 top dead center thank you
i have a 1981 merccury 1150, been working out small problems, the timing and sync were way out of wack, so we followed your instructions on setting, and now we are fixin to take it to the lake and see, will follow up after we get back, But i am wondering about the voltage reg, if it has one, if it does i assume it is run off the flywheel, do you know where it is and how it is wired. i appreciate your videos on this motor very much.
Hi Turbo. I appreciate your videos. Question. Do the degrees for TDC and for setting other limits (17, 5, 21, 0) hold true for other old Mercury models. I have a 1971 800.
I get spark right on tdc but distributor doesn't seem to move butterflies or even spark when i turn it like you showed.. i have a '67 or '68 mercury 1100. The 110 hp version of your 115hp..
Great job on your Video's. I have a 78 1115 and Love it. Had a problem of coils going bad after running 20 -30 min at top end. after a lot of research I've checked the Stator, replaced the rectifier, replaced the Switch box and the coil again. Now is running and the Voltage check's out to be --15+AC from the Stator at Idle & 12.78 DC on the Battery side .All the Stator does is charge the battery and send AC voltage to the Tachometer . All the Rectifier does is convert the AC voltage from the Stator to DC to charge the Battery.and send DC to the switch box. BUT if the Rectifier go.s bad you get High voltage on the DC side which will burn out a coil / Switch box. My Question is what Voltage are you getting to compare to mine.??
***** I was running at full and The motor just shut down (No spark ) replaced the coil and it ran fine for another 20 -30 min . Thought i was getting bad used coils until I noticed the Rectifier was melted out.
KidProdigyxboxlive If I remember correctly... NO Look on the cage of the motor, there should be a sticker that has WOT timing settings and let me know what you find. May have to ask my gurus about this one.
Hello, I'm from Georgia, I have the same Mercury 135 engine, I can't start the engine, the wires are cut, please tell me which wire should be connected where. Thanks.
when i rotate the distributor i can hear click noise i think spark but when i really cant see the spark from spark plug i did exactly what u did in this video accept adjusting all the advanced screws do i have to adjust the advanced screws ? becaue this motor was running great then i take a part pu it back toughter and i never touch any advances screws
Do u have a video that would me with timing an 1988 115 hp inline six? Distributorless ignition? Or quick explanation? Have the concept down. Just where to adjust at idle crank speed and/ or wot
It's a bit of a different beast with the ADI. You have to disconnect a box to do the timing and timing should be at 21 while cranking. If you do some google searching you should be able to find a step by step. Check FB and search for inline merc lovers group. I'm in there. Or ask the homies at scream and fly.
and i tought my carbs was bad but i had to take all the motor apart but everything looks clean then after i check the spark plugs and i see they were wet with with 2 stroke may be that was the reson motor wouldnt fire up?
mercury 72 thou 76 115 hp to 150 hp use the same carbs, but they have different numbers on them. plus i noticed that the jets are different. .080 to a .082
on coil i have 2 wires 1 black and othe one is green so is green one is + or - ?i want to test the coil for spark but i am nit sure wich cable is - or + ?
nonamesleftorwhat Out of the water I'm around 1800 until it warms up and then drops to around 1500. When in the water, I'm around 900. Double check that your distributor is returning fully to the stop when you throttle into "N". If not, you will need to pre-load your throttle cable to apply pressure to the stop when at "N".
i have 1968 mrc 1000 series mine say timing .275 36 and 1/2 half degree so i should do 0tdc then turn flywheel to 5btdc then find the spark then move to 361/2 then samething again ? but i never tough the advanced spark screw do i need to adjust the spark with advanced spark screw ? and also i tool the flywheel off now my mototr is off the timing and i dont get any spark at all it was fine before ran then i shit the mototor for 3 mins then try to start ater that it never start again
did this work for the final timing setting or did you have to take a timing light to it at WOT on the lake. i have the 1500 and i have good low end power but nothing up top. i;m lost. i get to 30mph in seconds and then nothing, need help bad uggggg so frustrating
This is for the final timing setting. You may have to set the idle once on lake. Couple quick questions... 1. Do you have tilt/trim? 2. What is the angle of the motor to the transom? (Photo is nice) 3. What prop are you running? 4. Are there any other known motor issues?
***** ya I have tilt trim. I noticed actually some differences in spark plugs. Top one was oily. And then as you go down they have a little cream color on them. It starts n runs great but seems like I should have more power. Baja 16ss and can only get it to 40 mph. Seems low for that motor and a small boat. I'm guessing something is not set properly.
yes i did but i try to unplug the coil cable and try to start mototor to ck spark in coil cable but if my timing in not correct will i get any spark ???? thank you
***** Thank you sir. Awesome videos. You've been a great help. One more thing, my merc didn't come with a control box but I'm looking for one and was wanting to know what you have on yours or maybe one you would suggest.
@cturboaddict im just wondering how I can get in contact with you about an old Mercruy 850 that I'm working on? I have a bit of an odd issue. If you can let me know id appreciate it!
Sorry for the late reply, been working on the motor haha Bought it a few weeks ago "it just has a high idle" I was told by PO. It would fire right up on the first tap of the key but would Rev to the moon right off the bat. So I rebuilt my distributor (new bearings & grease) put it all back together and back on the motor. Set TDC with #1 piston and flywheel at "0" Did the link and sync as per your video here. I had spark throughout the process as I turned the distributor by hand. Finished the process step by step, went to fire the motor and it won't start. I'm a little lost now to say the least. I'm thinking maybe the disc in the distributor isn't making contact with that little contact/tab that it spins through inside the distributor. If you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it!!
@@cturboaddict hey thanks I will check the choke and fuel even though I'm sure I smelt it and I'm thinking no spark when I'm turning it over by the key. Is there a specific gap on the disc and pickup on the rotor shaft?
good day i just got one of this engine and im a do it my self guy could u tell me how to check my trigger im no getting no sparks i test the switch box and it works... its give spark ....
and i am little confuse for tweak distributor for spark and adjusting all the advanced screws i did look at video i got in video but i am not sure how to find spark with distributor tweaking
I know this video is old. Maybe you will still see this and Help me. If You have a good way we can talk about my issues on my 1150 I would Greatly appreciate it.
Hi I just picked up by 76 merc1150 the timing looks good at idle but as soon as I Advance the throttle is starts misfiring. I followed your directions in this video exactly. The max advance in throttle stop for way off. but after following your directions my cylinders are still firing all over the place when I Advance the throttle. does this mean that I have a bad trigger?
+cturboaddict Yes I checked it using a timing light. when I put the timing light on it at an idle all cylinders look like they are firing where they should be. when I Advance the throttle then it begins to misfire the more I increase the throttle the more it misfires. I thought maybe I needed to do this because the nut was missing on the throttle arm so it looks like somebody's been messing with the adjustments. And the distributor was not contacting the max Park stop nut
Have you checked all of your spark plug wires? Also, pull the dizzy cap and inspect the rotor and connections to spark plugs. Remember, the spark plugs THREAD into the cap, do NOT YANK THEM OUT!
+cturboaddict yeah I think the wire out once before on another motor LOL learned my lesson. The wires look good I just pulled the cap, it looks good as far as I could tell . The timing looks good at an idle throttle it forward it begins to miss by firing 2 on 4 3 on 6 and so on. they just start popping all over the place. I put numbers on the flywheel where all the plugs should be firing and I'm watching it with my timing light
Will this work on my mercury 1400(140hp) I did as you said, exactly to the t... even lock tight everything for safe measure. But now I have no throttle.
I put lock tight on the plate it self, top cowling ect... only where i found necessary. Control moves but wont lock into forward or reverse. Some idiot has messed with it before i bought it so all kind of stuff was tweaked or missing
***** it idles great 100% because of you. The person who had this thing before me lost the idle stop screw and compensated by adjusting everything else to make it idle. Then pawned it off on me extremely cheap...
Hi, I cannot hear a click or see a spark when attempting to adjust the distributor. It does run but hard to start and dies out at WOT. 1978 150 hp I6. Any thoughts please?
***** It was a fuel issue, then it fried 2 pistons. I took it apart and someone put JB weld where the block was cracked near the 2 fried pistons (nice). Anyway I changed the powerhead (one I had sitting around) and just got it running, I am going to try this today. Thanks
Thanks again brother maybe even better way I remove spark plugs reattach wires to plugs and be sure 1 or all touching ground. within 5 LBs excellent. Notice them snapping. Have spark. Dial indicate #1 cyl. to O degrees. Set timing .pointer or make your own mark. Go ahead remove timing adjuster plate now. Set 5 degrees to just start to kick in
Right on. Yeah I have nothing but time. Things running goofy anyways. No power first ten mins then runs immaculate rest of the day. Can here another cylinder or two trying to fire at first then bam all power!!
No I havent. This just started happening couple weeks ago. Havent had time to tinker with it. Would I just check to see if its charging battery? Or checking the actual switch?
@@darrenbeauregard8368 I have a 1975 850 4cyl Thunderbolt. Just FYI, the timing marks are different from the L6 or 6 cylinder distributor Mercs. For the 850, start from 4-6 degrees initial Primary, then rotate flywheel back to between 24-27 degrees for Maximum Advance Timing. The 850 is not set at 21 degrees like the larger 6 cyl Mercs. Set your Secondary Throttle Pickup. Then set your Wide Open Throttle. You can set everything else the same to 0 degrees TDC. If you go by the TSM or Seloc manual, it states that. 4-6 degrees (5 perfect), 27 degrees (new gas be safer at 24-26 degrees), then back to 0 degrees. There is a way to Linknsync without removing the plate. Mercson has a few vids on that I believe and I think he sets Primary between 4-6 degrees by using the same same adjusting screw that this video ends with.
I have a 79 that randomly leaks fuel from the bottom carb runs great but that leaking gas is freaking annoying. any help, also all the carbs have been rebuilt
Sounds like a float issue. Alot of people don't replace them when rebuilding. Replace float and check the needle/tab setting. It's in the SELOC manual.
cturboaddict I personally replaced the floats and needles. I'm telling you it's about to drive me insane, not only because my profession is as a mechanic, but just the way it runs great I mean like new and powerful. it's just gotten to the point where I bought another boat and will be sticking a for sale sign on this one. By the way want a 81 ranger bass boat with a 115 tower of power on it perfect condition no issues once so ever. LOL
there is two cable coming from controller one for the throttle and next for the shifter so i ask which kf the two go to the throttle .is it the one that move when you push controller forward ??
#1 is the last cylinder to cool, it will always be hotter. You should be able to put your hand on it without getting burnt though. If you've got good flow, you should be fine.
soo..I "decarbed my engine..which btw ran flawlessly before..but since inside was looking rather black and everyone saying "do it"..so one can of seafoam..half in the tank the rest in the cylinders and carb. .let it soak for a few days and...fired it up in my 55 gallon barrel. and it looked like a mammath took a shit in it after drinking warm beer all night with little black flakes . obviously that's decomposing carbon is those tiny flakes..the brown mud looking stuff. .well my friend either my motor has a really bad yeast infection or something else. .now it idles rough.before it ran so smooth I was proud of her..jow long will it take to get all that crap out..and do you think that's the reason? it starts right up..still a fair amount of smoke ..but the brown camel toe good is still evident in the water..what is your professional opinion. .there is a electric fuel pump in place of the hamp prime pump with a fuel filter ..should I take it out..it's brand new. well not since decarb-appocolpyps happened..it's choked. .wish you were my neighbor so I could just go toss a rock at your window when I had a motor issue..lol..at least I found a name for her..it's now called "the cameltoe""that or "cirrhosis of the river".😆
+Kevin Masihia LOLLLLL Run it again. When breaking all that shit up things can sometimes get lodged where they aren't supposed to be. IE- in your carbs... You could have a piece of sediment in the carb causing an issue, or a stuck float for that matter. I say run it again, get it out on the water and hammer the fuck down to clear her out. See what happens after that.
Excellent link & sync! I fought with the manuals and other reads until I listened to your video. Thumbs up!
Thanks! Good luck!!!
Thanks for the lesson! I’m not getting full throttle on the butterfly valve so I’ll do what you said and check it! 👍🙋♂️🖖🏻

genman02 No problem bud! Lemme know if you have any other questions. Remember, she should idle HIGH outside of the water.

Dude this video was 👌 so detailed and well explained. If you still have the motor, you should do a video on how to Polish and reset the points. I've been trying to find a video on it.
no points on this motor.
For real?? So if my battery is not charging while the motor is running, what could be the issue? I thought for sure the points were just corroded
You're awesome man!! Finally got our engine running again!
Awesome!
very helpful video. thank you. i have heard of Dr. Frankinmerc. here in WA. state
+qwesthunter 12 He's one of the best.
Ok I'm gonna take her out this weekend and see if that works..hoping so..I'll let change know..thanks again
Are the degrees different on a 850 4 cl.
Awesome thanks bro. Yeah that timing advance module on the back of thr front plate. Heard you dont even need it wired up. Havent tried but what I heard. Ill check it put thank ya
I'm going to inquire with my Guru anyhow. But prolly won't be for a few days before I get it narrowed down.
Thanks so much. Saved me a crap load of time!
Excellent 👌 instruction... Thank.....
Great instructions, thanks
When I replaced the distributor with a rebuilt one (new trigger) it was fixed.
This makes sense. Thanks, I found a write up and it’s bad. I’m going to try it your way and see.
Matthew Rutledge write up is probably the same as my video.
cturboaddict technically probably yes, it wasn’t worded well for my purposes and was missing some things you explained.
well these settings work on a 1975 85 horse merc it was awesome the way you did these adjustments
they should bud. settings should hold true. some parts may look different
took of hood and timing sticker gone on flywheel dont know where timing mark are bummer
Hey I see you do a lot with the inline 6 dist engine. How do you wire in a tach straight to engine?
I have the same motor and i was wondering if you could show how the linkage to gear selector work because mine wont go into reverse(it doesnt clunk or make any noise) thanks
tony ton I'll see what I can do.
Like the "woof woof" at the end, especially! LOL
I have a video on it.
I havent found it on youtube yet. Could you please give the title so i can find it please. Ps Great videos you have. Cheers @@cturboaddict

Hey bud do you have any videos on adjusting the shifter cables?
I don't recall if I do
Do you have any idea what size the starter mount screws are? I'm working on a 950 ss, I think it's a 67 Thanks for any help.
it was strange the mototor was running great i shut the motor then 5 to 10 mins later i try to start i woul not start then may be i tought the cabs is dirty or stuck then i took the carb out ck put everything back then i check the spark plugs they were wet with gas /oil i probably did flooded the mototr out now i am off the timing and no spark at all in any spark plug i wonder because i am off the timing is that is y i am not getting spark ? thank you u r very helpful i was lost without ur video
@cturboadict.
when adjust the max. spark advance need have the throttle full open ?? or only rotary the flywheel to 20°
+cuenta619 Butterflies are irrelevant. Timing is what you are setting. You can adjust the butterflies later. They don't max open anyway when at WOT.
Any recomendations? it is the 1972 1150
Jarren Tupper You have an older model. Setup is the same, the timing marks are on the cover not on the flywheel with a pointer.
so how do I know where to set the flywheel.. I don't see any pointer on it....
I see 3 small holes drilled vertically in the flywheel now....I assume that is my pointer and line it up with the decal on the case where needed....Is this correct?
Jarren Tupper have you watched my timing decal vids?
Can you tell me how your throttle control works with just one cable coming from the controls? Depending on how I attach it at the motor it will either shift or advance throttle but it will not do both. Does the throttle advance electrically or is it mechanical?
Thank You
I have two cables... One for shift/ one for throttle.
Hey i have 1 question bring the flywheel to 0tdc and match distributor arrow wit flywheel then u put the belt on and tight all the bolts then u did 5 cclockwise with flywheel ? i am litle confuse after 0 top dead center thank you
Thanks, im rebuilding a 1500
What is the process for syncing the carb butterflies? Just loosen the linkage and make sure they are all snapped fully closed?
They should all be closed when throttle is closed. Maybe a slight gap, but BARELY.
i have a 1981 merccury 1150, been working out small problems, the timing and sync were way out of wack, so we followed your instructions on setting, and now we are fixin to take it to the lake and see, will follow up after we get back, But i am wondering about the voltage reg, if it has one, if it does i assume it is run off the flywheel, do you know where it is and how it is wired. i appreciate your videos on this motor very much.
WeThePeople still no acceleration, still having issues, rebuilding carbs today
WeThePeople Are you using a timing light? Try a timing light vs jumping the spark from the spark plug.
Hi Turbo. I appreciate your videos. Question. Do the degrees for TDC and for setting other limits (17, 5, 21, 0) hold true for other old Mercury models. I have a 1971 800.
Yes
cturboaddict
I get spark right on tdc but distributor doesn't seem to move butterflies or even spark when i turn it like you showed.. i have a '67 or '68 mercury 1100. The 110 hp version of your 115hp..
Try it again, and make sure you have all your wires connected properly and a fully charged battery.
I know you've mention the model number for the brass screw ends on the plug wires that screw into the distributor cap but I cannot find that video
also, what's the size of the piston stop?
I'd have to double check it as I don't know off the top of my head. Unfortunetly she's packed away for the weekend.
***** Thanks for the Quick reply , am I right on the working about the electral system.
Bill Marcum What is your indication that your coil is "going bad"? It may be something else wrong.
***** I was running at full and The motor just shut down (No spark ) replaced the coil and it ran fine for another 20 -30 min . Thought i was getting bad used coils until I noticed the Rectifier was melted out.
Bill Marcum which I THINK caused the High Voltage which burned out the coil
What’s the gas mix for this I have the same one I need to get working soon but want to put the right mix in

Is the timing settings you did on this motor the same as the merc 900?
KidProdigyxboxlive If I remember correctly... NO
Look on the cage of the motor, there should be a sticker that has WOT timing settings and let me know what you find. May have to ask my gurus about this one.
***** it says,
Pickup 4-6 btdc
Max spark - 21 btdc
@5000 rpm
KidProdigyxboxlive Then Yes.
***** sweet. Just tryn to get everything fine tuned. This is the first time working on something like this. I'm a budget fixer myself. Good shit bro.
KidProdigyxboxlive That's why I make these vids too bud. I've got alot of them on Inline Merc tech.
So did you have key in on position & shift lever in neutral or??
Key has to be ON as you're calling for spark. Yes Neutral. But you're throttle cable is disconnected.
I just got an 1150 and can't seem to find a good parts place.. Any suggestions?
What parts in particular? Ishopmarine is one for random single parts. But if you looking for regular maitenence parts, ebay typically has em.
is this good advice for a 69 125hp mercury?
Yes
Hello, I'm from Georgia, I have the same Mercury 135 engine, I can't start the engine, the wires are cut, please tell me which wire should be connected where. Thanks.
Bud, you need to google a wiring diagram or buy a new harness.
@@cturboaddict thank you friend
when i rotate the distributor i can hear click noise i think spark but when i really cant see the spark from spark plug i did exactly what u did in this video accept adjusting all the advanced screws do i have to adjust the advanced screws ? becaue this motor was running great then i take a part pu it back toughter and i never touch any advances screws
so is there a way to test the distributor by its self
I'm wondering if you can help me doing the same thing on a 1968 50hp mercury
where did you send the distributor to get a new inside and wires?
Doc Frankenmerc in Oregon.
Just realized my motor is a 1971 not a 1979... do you think the link and sync method you shown will still work for it?
You do some great videos mate... I was wondering if these settings apply to the 1500 as well.? cheers
John Sanders Yes they do!
and i tought my carbs was bad but i had to take all the motor apart but everything looks clean then after i check the spark plugs and i see they were wet with with 2 stroke may be that was the reson motor wouldnt fire up?
i clean the distributor up no sparks from it .. so doing i test the trigger to see if it good r not ?
albert roswell If you're getting spark from the coil, then the distributor or spark plug wires is your problem.
cturboaddict do you know what carbs came out on the inline 6 1500?
jeff frazier man, there's a few variations of carbs. i would have to look at my notes. What year?
mercury 72 thou 76 115 hp to 150 hp use the same carbs, but they have different numbers on them. plus i noticed that the jets are different. .080 to a .082
74 model...
What does my battery cables hook up to? I have a 1985 mercury two stroke outboard:-)
Your battery? Haha.... Seriously, thats a very general statement bud. Photo???
on coil i have 2 wires 1 black and othe one is green so is green one is + or - ?i want to test the coil for spark but i am nit sure wich cable is - or + ?
Hi man did the setting but I'm like almost 2000 rpms out of the water is that normal. I double and triple checked the settings
nonamesleftorwhat Out of the water I'm around 1800 until it warms up and then drops to around 1500. When in the water, I'm around 900.
Double check that your distributor is returning fully to the stop when you throttle into "N". If not, you will need to pre-load your throttle cable to apply pressure to the stop when at "N".
nonamesleftorwhat You should see my video on the "test tank" to check these settings.

i have 1968 mrc 1000 series mine say timing .275 36 and 1/2 half degree so i should do 0tdc then turn flywheel to 5btdc then find the spark then move to 361/2 then samething again ? but i never tough the advanced spark screw do i need to adjust the spark with advanced spark screw ? and also i tool the flywheel off now my mototr is off the timing and i dont get any spark at all it was fine before ran then i shit the mototor for 3 mins then try to start ater that it never start again
did this work for the final timing setting or did you have to take a timing light to it at WOT on the lake. i have the 1500 and i have good low end power but nothing up top. i;m lost. i get to 30mph in seconds and then nothing, need help bad uggggg so frustrating
This is for the final timing setting. You may have to set the idle once on lake.
Couple quick questions...
1. Do you have tilt/trim?
2. What is the angle of the motor to the transom? (Photo is nice)
What RPM are you at on the top end? FYI, this is static timing. There is not WOT setting while running.
not sure need a new guage. but noticed spark plugs full of cream color light brown. I have water in my pistons... crap
That sounds about right bud.....
yes i did but i try to unplug the coil cable and try to start mototor to ck spark in coil cable but if my timing in not correct will i get any spark ???? thank you
when you going to post a video of it runnin???

dude got one need $500.00 for full power head not selling by it self .. do yu have a link in where i can get one?
albert roswell I do not.
@cturboaddict im just wondering how I can get in contact with you about an old Mercruy 850 that I'm working on? I have a bit of an odd issue. If you can let me know id appreciate it!
Right here.
Sorry for the late reply, been working on the motor haha
Bought it a few weeks ago "it just has a high idle" I was told by PO. It would fire right up on the first tap of the key but would Rev to the moon right off the bat.
So I rebuilt my distributor (new bearings & grease) put it all back together and back on the motor. Set TDC with #1 piston and flywheel at "0"
Did the link and sync as per your video here.
@barryp1938 I would turn up the advance. Check to make sure choke is working properly. Check to ensure you're getting fuel.
@@cturboaddict hey thanks I will check the choke and fuel even though I'm sure I smelt it and I'm thinking no spark when I'm turning it over by the key. Is there a specific gap on the disc and pickup on the rotor shaft?
@@barryp185 I can't answer that. Look up CDI electronics to see if there's details on their site.

Say my advace is set at 26° will it only pop at 26°?
The distributor rotates with throttle. What you are setting is MAX advance.
I hear it click but no spark on my 68 merc 500 why is that
Hi I just picked up by 76 merc1150 the timing looks good at idle but as soon as I Advance the throttle is starts misfiring. I followed your directions in this video exactly. The max advance in throttle stop for way off. but after following your directions my cylinders are still firing all over the place when I Advance the throttle. does this mean that I have a bad trigger?
Check it again. Use a timing light.
And, what caused you to think you needed to do this anyhow?
+cturboaddict
Yes I checked it using a timing light. when I put the timing light on it at an idle all cylinders look like they are firing where they should be. when I Advance the throttle then it begins to misfire the more I increase the throttle the more it misfires.
What did you loctite? And what do you mean by "no throttle"? That you cant move your controls, or motor wont rev?
I put lock tight on the plate it self, top cowling ect... only where i found necessary. Control moves but wont lock into forward or reverse. Some idiot has messed with it before i bought it so all kind of stuff was tweaked or missing
Cody Allen Bottoms Does it idle bud? And when advancing the throttle forward do the cables move?
***** it idles great 100% because of you. The person who had this thing before me lost the idle stop screw and compensated by adjusting everything else to make it idle. Then pawned it off on me extremely cheap...
***** I'm not sure about the cables moving yet I can check tomorrow. Do you have a video on adjusting the forward and reverse cables?

Jacob's Electronics, LLC. - You Got IT, We Fix IT. Dies out at WOT? Sounds like fuel issue to me. Starts and runs fine right?
***** It was a fuel issue, then it fried 2 pistons. I took it apart and someone put JB weld where the block was cracked near the 2 fried pistons (nice). Anyway I changed the powerhead (one I had sitting around) and just got it running, I am going to try this today.
Thanks
Jacob's Electronics, LLC. - You Got IT, We Fix IT. Lemme know how it goes
***** Went good, sounds allot better. Going to put her in the water in a bit.
Thanks
Jacob's Electronics, LLC. - You Got IT, We Fix IT. Idle should be a little high out of water. Added back pressure will drop rpms once in water.
Hey there . I have learned so much from your videos but now cant get motor started after trying sync. Plz help
That's a pretty vague statement. Start with the basics. Fuel and spark. Redo the sync
Thank you
Thanks again brother maybe even better way I remove spark plugs reattach wires to plugs and be sure 1 or all touching ground. within 5 LBs excellent. Notice them snapping. Have spark. Dial indicate #1 cyl. to O degrees. Set timing .pointer or make your own mark. Go ahead remove timing adjuster plate now. Set 5 degrees to just start to kick in
Would this basically be the same for the Merc 500 Thunderbolt?
This basic procedure will work for all the 2/3/4/6 cylinder inlines from 1960 to 1988
Awesome!
Thomas Jankins You got it bud! Now go get on the water!
I tried this and my sparkplug won't spark. I can hear it spark inside the dist cap it sparks a nice blue spark when I crank it with the key. Plz help
Right on. Yeah I have nothing but time. Things running goofy anyways. No power first ten mins then runs immaculate rest of the day. Can here another cylinder or two trying to fire at first then bam all power!!
Have you tested your stator?
No I havent. This just started happening couple weeks ago. Havent had time to tinker with it. Would I just check to see if its charging battery? Or checking the actual switch?
Also kinda in a bind not haveing a dva. I do a multimeter though.
Ricky StrAwhun Do you have a Seloc manual? Or a Mercury repair manual? Should invest in one.
Can't tell whether you're lining the 20° mark on the flywheel with the zero on the piece of tape
Or are you lining the TDC mark up with the 20° on the tape
I think I got it wrong
Battling an old 850 with great compression
Has anyone adjusted anything? And did you check all the fuel hoses and rebuild the pump? Simple sally rebuild
cturboaddict no idea, bought it in the rain , ran it and it runs great just when you stop annoying oil slick behind the boat after about 2 minutes
cturboaddict all pumps and lines have been checked all 3 carbs rebuilt all seals replaced
LOL

albert roswell The lowest one should be the the Gear shift

#1 is the last cylinder to cool, it will always be hotter. You should be able to put your hand on it without getting burnt though. If you've got good flow, you should be fine.
@@cturboaddict okay thanks. do you know if there is a thermostat on these 6 cylinder outboards
@@marcinryczan8829 no thermostat
Thanks very much for all the info.Would you know what the reason of the engine loosing power at full throttle (Bogging),could be?
I'm also looking to buy a baffle plate have you got one for sale or anyone that does?
soo..I "decarbed my engine..which btw ran flawlessly before..but since inside was looking rather black and everyone saying "do it"..so one can of seafoam..half in the tank the rest in the cylinders and carb. .let it soak for a few days and...fired it up in my 55 gallon barrel. and it looked like a mammath took a shit in it after drinking warm beer all night with little black flakes . obviously that's decomposing carbon is those tiny flakes..the brown mud looking stuff. .well my friend either my motor has a really bad yeast infection or something else. .now it idles rough.before it ran so smooth I was proud of her..jow long will it take to get all that crap out..and do you think that's the reason? it starts right up..still a fair amount of smoke ..but the brown camel toe good is still evident in the water..what is your professional opinion. .there is a electric fuel pump in place of the hamp prime pump with a fuel filter ..should I take it out..it's brand new. well not since decarb-appocolpyps happened..it's choked. .wish you were my neighbor so I could just go toss a rock at your window when I had a motor issue..lol..at least I found a name for her..it's now called "the cameltoe""that or "cirrhosis of the river".😆

Run it again.
