  • The affordable FE (fan edition) line of Samsung Galaxy Android tablets is back for the fall of 2023 with the Tab S9 FE and Tab S9 FE+, 10.9” and 12.4” tablets that are high quality yet considerably more affordable than the non-FE counterparts, the S9 and S9+. Both have bright IPS 90Hz displays, but only the smaller model is available with optional 5G. They’re S Pen capable and the pen in included. They’re also compatible with Samsung’s keyboard case and cover case for the Tab S9 family and run One UI, just like Samsung Galaxy phones. They have DeX support and will get years of OS and security updates. They compete with the iPad 10th gen, OnePlus Pad and Google Pixel Tablet.

    Correction: display out via USB-C doesn't seem be supported, despite Samsung's specs page stating it is supported. I tested it and couldn't get it working in our out of DeX mode.

      Even worse... it doesn't support NTFS format and can't power external SSD. It's just USB 2.0, which is very slow. This is a bit disappointing. It has surprisingly good speakers and is fast enough. I have s9 fe(11 inches). The display is very bright, it works great in the car as a navigation and music player, where my s8 ultra was simply too big. Overall a great tablet, but i wouldn't pay full price for it.

    I have this tablet and am enjoying it so far. Runs games very well. Not max settings but it does the job on high to medium settings. Screen is very good, battery is outstanding. I can connect ps5 controller and play as much as i please. Resolution and texture quality is very good. Drawing apps work very well. No issues when multitasking either. I use this tablet to its max capacity. Gaming, drawing, media consumption, music listening, photo editing, browsing, streaming. No issues whatsoever. I had a choice, either take s9ultra plus or feplus. I chose fe mainly ultra might have been too big. Don't get me wrong this tablet definitely has some size to it as well. For me it hits the right spot. I would recommend this tablet for casual to mid level users if you can call it like that. For more intensive users i'd then redirect them to s9 plus. To sum things up. Gaming is prioritized to medium, low and at times high settings, depending on the game. World of Tanks runs at medium mixed with high settings and some to low. Other intensive game is Summoners Chronicles. Runs at medium mixed with some low settings and little bit of high too. As well thank you for putting this review. Thought i'd share some of my experience as well.

    Really appreciate the review and especially the point of comparison between the S8+ from last year. Super helpful since I'm trying to be mindful and wise of my spend. Have quite a few upgrades coming up so I'm excited but definitely proceeding with caution since it can add up fast lol. Thanks and missed watching your videos! Great and thorough reviews 🙏

    Love your videos. Good to note that Samsung can stack certain baseline specials with their edu, gov, medical, etc store discounts. I was able to get the s9 fe + for just over $400. Ordered it to be a "living room tablet" for textbook and ebook reading, news, emails, zoom, occasional note writing on a platform that links well with my Samsung phone with long battery life. With the discounts, it was about half the price of the S9+ (at least at the time I purchased mine).

    Anyway, due for a long stay in hospital...need to keep myself active in the head which needs some youtube and other subscriptions available to view whilst looking slovenly in a cess pit of a bed.
    You. Have definitely swayed me to this tablet. WITH just simple and with easy to understand info. Simple as that...bit like me...simple. Thankyou...By the time anyone has read this. I'll have bought one.

      In terms of "ecosystem", I would most def say YES.
      However, in Android world, don't sleep on the OnePlus tablet. It has an 11" OLED display, is priced competitively, and the verified reviews on the OnePlus website give it very high marks.
      Also, for more casual/"midrange"-budget users, the Google Pixel tablet is an interesting and cheaper alternative to the iPad 10.
      For $500 USD, it includes a wireless charging stand with bigger speakers. So no more feeling of, "gee, I want to go watch a movie in bed on my tablet, but its battery is nearly dead". 😃

    I LOVE that it has LCD and not OLED or AMOLED. My new LG TV has permanent screen burn-in from the Local KTVU Fox News overlay. The screen is permanently ruined. I had no idea that OLED has this problem. Not ONE reviewer talks about this. CRT (old tech), Plasma (old tech), OLED (new tech), and AMOLED (new tech) all suffer from permanent screen damage if the screen stays on the same image for too long. LED/LED screens are immune to this.

    • @sharkfintech5893
      @sharkfintech5893 6 місяців тому

      Sorry to hear about your TV 😢 I love my OLED-display Samsung phone, tablet, and TV, and my understanding is that screen burn-in is less of a factor today than it was in prior years (let alone with Plasma), but your experience obviously proves that it still CAN be a problem.
      Also, some people are prone to eye irritation and even headaches (pulse-width modulation, or PWM) from OLEDs, and LCDs in some cases. LCDs are worse for blue-light emission when viewing them for long periods.
      Mini-LED displays - like those found on the 13" iPad Pro - seem like they could be a good compromise. They offer the advantages of OLED (e.g, popping colors, deeper blacks, more viewing angles), yet I haven't heard that PWM or screen burn-in are issues (yet, anyway !).

    Quality concise review. Got a couple of Samsung tablets - a S7 FE 5G and the monster that is the S8 Ultra 5G. Both with Samsung keyboard cases & SD cards For in-bag use the S7 FE is just better than the Ultra; being lighter and a better case stand. Was looking at the S9 FE+ 5G as a replacement for the S7 but... I'm from the UK and the best spec we can get here is 8GB/256GB. But at time of writing it's half the price of the S8+ 5G with the £100 offer & £75 trade-in. Maybe closer to Christmas the S8's will reduce in price?
    One question - anyone tried the S7/S8 12.4" keyboard case on the S9 Tab+ FE? It looks like it should fit, but the case stand for the S9 seems to have changed.

    Concerning CPU power, the 30-40% difference is with the weaker 5G version of the S7FE (SD 720). Compared to the WIFI version (SD 778G) CPU is IDENTICAL to the S9FE (I have the S7FE and the benchmarks are identical). Samsung conveniently omits to specify this when comparing...

    • @Sabrintwitt3r
      @Sabrintwitt3r 5 місяців тому

      Snapdragon 720 did not support 5G, so the Tab S7FE 5G had the 750G 5G instead, still quite bizarre that the WiFi version of the S7FE had a better processor, it would be still fine with a 750G or a 730G. Heck, it would make the S9FE+ look good

    • @_Digitalguy
      @_Digitalguy 5 місяців тому +1

      @@Sabrintwitt3r back then the 778g was a big surprise as it was almost on par with the 865+ of the regular S7. And having had both, the browser benchmarks were actually slightly better on the FE than on the S7+ (but close enough that one could say on par). Now, instead, with the S9FE being on par with the S7FE on CPU, the gap with the regular S9 is absolutely huge (I still have the S7FE and the smaller S9 to compare). Having said that, the S7FE is still pretty usable, especially with more RAM (I have the 8GB version) and feels kind of "slow" only when you are spoiled by much faster processors like the 8 gen 2 or the M1.

      Now that Samsung is offering 4 years of Android updates for their tablets & phones, there's really no need to upgrade every year or two, _unless_ there's a particular feature you want/need, and/or assuming you can grab a fantastic trade-in deal combined with a substantial promotional discount.
      My Galaxy Tab S7 Plus is still chugging strong, despite its OS updates having run out (it will still get security patches through 2024), so I'm in no rush to upgrade anytime soon.

      Once you start piling on the "Magic" keyboard, Apple pencil, and pricing-in higher flash-storage options (Samsung Galaxy Tabs include the S-pen, & have a micro-SD card slot), the iPad Pro cost SKYROCKETS 😟

    Battery capacity is mAH. It's pronounced "millamp hours." It's not "milliamp per hour." The reason is "amp" is electrical current, a form of "electrons per hour," so "milliamp hours" is way to say how much storage ("electrons") the battery has. "milliamps per hour," as you are calling it in the video, is a different metric entirely (di/dt) and not often specified.

      They lost their contracts to Qualcomm due to poor performance, thermals and efficiency, and now everyone has moved to TSMC. That is partly why Samsung Group's profits fell 95% in H1/2023. They also cancelled the Exynos 2300 as it was miles inferior to the SD8G2. They are now making mid-range chips for their models to give some work to their fab business rather than suffer further slumps.

      @@Ozymandi_as yes it is really a fool's edition. Both FE Tablet as well as FE smartphone, specially the smartphone with Exynos in international markets. Basically these devices are priced double of their actual worth. This FE Tablet processor limits the capacity of this device and makes it highly overpriced. Good and value for money Tablets are from Xiaomi and OnePlus. FE is really not Fan's edition, atleast not this year. One of the previous device Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G which MKBHD awarded the phone of the year was actually somewhat worth calling a Fan's Edition Device.

      But Samsung Devices loose their value quickly, and now software support is also long. After one year with much lower prices this device will be worth considering. Right now, well, only a Fool would waste money on it, unless ofcourse one is very very rich and these things does not matter.

    The processing power of this Tablet is not great. While these tablets have a specific audience, if one can do some adjustments then it is better to buy a good laptop, specifically a budget gaming laptop as a portable desktop. It has lots of processing power, is upgradable, and offers much more usability than a tablet and is overall much better value for money. I feel these tablets are a waste of money. Also I don't like them as they are simply not widely and heavy too, making them uncomfortable for extended use. If one likes reading, then just like me buy a Kindle, much much better and comparatively much more comfortable than a Tablet. A Kindle is one of the best gadgets one can buy.

      What was described isnt really the use of a tablet. Tablet is really a secondary/complimentary device. I agree though never to overspend on a tablet vs a regular laptop if that is the choice people are making.

      Ridiculous comment. 👎🏻 Maybe you should try a good tablet out in a store - or even buy one (most North American retailers offer 14- to 30-day return periods) - before judging them.
      My Galaxy Tab S7 Plus is my workhorse when I'm not using my MacBook Air (which even then is mainly just for access to my job's remote portal). The tablet's OLED display & speakers are far superior, it's thinner & lighterweight than the Mac, DeX provides it a laptop-type experience whenever I want it, and the Webcam is measurably better. It's a pleasure to use -- something I don't feel nearly so much with the Mac.
      Gaming laptops are a terrible alternative to midrange or premium tablets. Most don't have OLED (unless you're willing to spend $3-4,000), nor touchscreen (let alone stylus-compatible) displays.
      And battery life ? 😅 Most gaming laptops - esp when their noisy fans kick in - get 2-4 hours if you're lucky. My Samsung Tab averages a minimum of 8 hours SoT ! The entire package (including detachable keyboard with a trackpad) cost me $835 in Jan 2021.
      As for Kindles, yes, they're much cheaper $, but ONLY good for reading books. A great concept when they were first released, but a device whose time has arguably passed.
