How'd you get such a good sound? I have to do the same thing in a song called "Vesuvius" but it never sounds as good as that
I don't know! He's a good player. Maybe there's something to getting the right cymbal matched to the right timp?

I used a trill line for the roll and a straight line up and down for the pedal movement. AND an explanation in words. I don't know if there's a standardised way to do it. Whatever you use, just make sure there's a clear explanation. As well, there's a link to this video (which is why it's here, actually).

It first needs to be explained on the instruction page at the beginning of the score, usually page 3. On the section write the instructions on the cymbal section. In this case looks a a hanging cymbal upside down on a 23" timpani. Write write those instructions and notated the roll on the cymbal stave.

@@alguiennanimo2135 No problem. You can ask for soft mallet, spear note head up, which means pressing on the pedal to the bottom. It's always best to consult a timpanist. Sometimes they know what to do without explicitly writing everything. "Writing thunder like" They may know which mallet will sound best or what to do. I always consult with an instrumentalist if I wish to make special effects. They may have better ideas.👍
