How do you suggest to secure to box in the dash to avoid unwanted rattles and vibrations? I was thinking of wrapping it in bubble wrap but i believe the box unit needs to dissipate heat. Also from what im seeing in the video, can you do without removing the top dash trim ?
I installed a mmi box in my F32 440i, in the bmw system is sound. In the mmi system is no sound, my car has no aux port... only the usb ports. Must i use the audio adapter? Sorry for bad english
where did you get the MMI box from? how did you connect the power for the Google Chromecast? how did you get your internet connection for the Chromecast? many thanks.
Thanks for the comment 👍 Remember, whatever you watch or listen through the mmi box, it'll be going through its sound channels. So, I don't think these mmi boxes can compete with any high end sound systems but overal sound quality was really good on this and others I've seen. Hope this helps ✌️
@@bmwsolutions7880 Hi thanks for the reply. I guess connection via car aux shouldnt be an issue or have noticable difference. Do you have a link where you bought it from? I would like to by the exact one you got (not all come with hdmi). Thanks 🙂
Which cables exactly did you route to under the armrest? My f36 already has an aux in there. How do you connect the mmi box to the stereo? Via the big 'in between' connector or a separate cable? Thanks!
Usb input and aux cable were routed under the console. If you have an aux input you won't need an adaptor. Mmi box connects to idrive via quad lock harnes that comes with the box.
From my experience, I have updated one of my old mmi box due to android auto update on google's side. I had to contact the seller and he sent me a file to put on a usb and insert it on the box. Only then I was able to update it. Most updates are about compatibility updates, so I believe if the box is working fine, they don't release updates.
The converter I need to power a chromecast , can anybody tell me what it is called please, so I can look it up on eBay or Amazon ? Also how do I connect the chromecast usb power to it ? Are they any videos of this being installed
Hello, Such a great video, I am gonna try that for sure. Couple of questions if you could address couple of questions: Will these tools you are using , come with the box? or should I need to order them separately? I have got BMW X1 2017, model with small screen, will this device work on it as well?
Thanks for the compliment and comment. You won't need any special tools for this work. A few T20 and T25 torx driver and basic tools that you see in the video. It will work with any display. Also, try to upgrade your display from 6.5inch to 8.8 inch, that's what I did on my 320d .it makes a huge difference 👍
Nice video! If I enable AUX via bimmercode then I don’t need the USB going in to the mmi box at the end do I? Also why on some videos do they unplug the lvds from the screen and plug it in the MMI?
Thanks 👍 Bimmercode aux activation is a different thing. You still need to connect the aux cable to the car (some mmi boxes can deliver audio through quadlock harness without aux cable). Lvds cable that comes as a splitter with the mmi box. One side goes to idrive display, other side to head unit, third one goes to the mmi box. So, mmi box is like a brigde between your idrive display and head unit. That's why it's so easy to switch between mmi box and bmw system with a single press on a menu button. Hope this helps 👋
I have the same plan for my mini. I also want to use Chromecast. You speak about the 'power connector ' for the Chromecast. Have you bought this seperate? What does it exactly do and where to buy? Thanks!!
I bought the power unit separately from ebay. Google dongle requires at least 2amp and 5v. This was the only way to get it worked in the car. Mmi box has 12v output, and this power unit converts it to 5v. Very easy to make the connection.
@@bmwsolutions7880 Thank you for your quick answer. I am not that technical so therefore this reply. I also watched this cable on your clip and i found a similar on ali. It is called "rcnun 8-32v 12v 24v to 5v 3a DC DC step down converter 15w". Is this the correct one? I add the type c in the Google TV. And how to connect this black and red wire? Thanx again!
Yes, sounds like you got the correct power adaptor. Black and white goes to the mmi box, there's a 12v output on it. Also you don't need to be expert to do simple installations and wiring as long as you have a good recource and reference on how to do. I believe you can buy apple car play from BMW connected services. Have a look if your car is compatible. If not, these mmi boxes are the solution. They give you a lot more than apple car play and prices are very reasonable.
Thanks for the great video! I followed the steps, however, the system did not power up at the end of the installation. Any idea where the issue might have been?
I have this box as well but for some reason I don't have the HDMI option on the main screen and it's nowhere in the settings. Do you know by any chance how it can be enabled? Thanks
That's interesting 🤔 I would contact the seller and ask about it. Maybe the box requires an update. Seller should have the update patch and they normally email it to you. Then you put it on a usb stick and insert to mmi box to update.
Hi 👋 glad you find it useful. As for your question, yes you can use the oem radio while you're on carplay or any other menu on the mmi box. Sound switch is set to number 7 on the idrive radio buttons as default, so it's easy to switch sound between idrive system and mmi box source.
