Bought this camera thanks to your advice, this is the only video actually showing how to load these, JOSH you are the man !! All you videos are great , keep up the amazing work !!
Does this feature look interesting to you? Would you use it? Let me know! By the way, if you liked the LUT's I used in this video, they're from the Gamut 606 and Kinetic packs that you can find here - gamut.io/?gamut=joshcameron :)
It seems like it would really benefit people who are Livestreaming and want something a little more customized than just a standard profile. Personally, I'm looking forward to using it in photo mode. I know there's a lot of luts available out there for free and tutorials on how to create your own or even reverse engineer luts from stills. I know I'd love to create a profile just for mimmicking the look of the xpan in color and monochrome since you can set up that 65:24 crop on the s5ii. I also like to play in Lightroom now with 2.39:1 crop and cinematic stylized edits to imagine still frames as being like from a film. For location scouts, I can see this being a tool they might use to quickly test out some grades on a location
I would always go V-Log and grade in post. The only way I would bake in a look is in the case of proxy files, if Panasonic added an option to record RAW externally while allowing proxies to be recorded internally (or allowed recording Prores HQ to SSD while recording H264 proxies internal).
Is it possible to use LUT just for preview on S5II screen while recording but get clean VLOG or rec709 on SD card? So basically do we still have LUT view assist like S5 mark I has + this new feature or forced to use only baked in functionality?
Hey Josh! I've been enjoying your video series on the new S5ii. You mentioned that the only real value of the real time LUT feature was to convert V-Log to 709, but I'm happy to tell you that’s actually not true. In Davinci Resolve, you can export a LUT from any color grade, so you can create a node that goes from V-Log to 709, and then add a new node with a creative LUT after this. I've done this, and it works phenomenally well. I believe this works with the free version of Resolve as well, so everyone should be able to do this for free. The other thing I’ll note is that you’ll get better results if you export to a PNG than to a JPEG, as PNG is a lossless format and will retain more of the nuances of the color grade. I thought you’d like to know 😊
Applying a LUT to both stills and video seems to make so much sense. Keep the shoot looking the same with little to no post processing. Hmmm, might it be time to sell my Sony's? Great review!!
Few days ago I purchased S5 II and loaded some luts from Panasonic and some I purchased. There is an issue with them I got. When exposure compensation is set to default they all look overexposed and washed out. I have to lower exposure compensation significantly to make them look ok. But this makes my raw files very underexposed.
I can see some functionality for this feature, but honestly my S5 already lets me load LUTS for real time preview and then I can shoot in VLOG and add the same luts in post while keeping the flexibility. Guess it's cool for people who want a lut look on a short turn around tho.
What a great video! I am getting the opportunity to mess around with a S5IIx through work and am very interested in the LUT capabilities!!! I am really interested to see what the Lomochrome Purple .cube file looks like in video and in photos, weird choice but I LOVE the look! Thanks for the great tutorial for loading and applying the files, I'll be coming back to this once I've got my hands on the S5IIx!
Do you need to delete all the photos off your SD card before adding the LUT files to the card to load into the camera? Or can you just throw the LUT files onto the card along with all the other photos and files on your card?
What about a LUT that has just slight adjustments to make the log files look/behave more like a log file from another camera brand like ARRI, Canon, Sony etc? This would possibly making life easier in post when combining different cameras in one shoot 🤞🏻
you’re saying a LUT that makes the footage come out of the camera looking like the LOG footage from another camera. So then you can then use LUTs / grading similar to those?
@McSnapples This is what I'm wondering about. A lot of guys I work with shoot Sony exclusively, but I hate using Sony. I'd love to get an S5ii and just be able to use Real Time LUT to have my footage match the S-Log footage when I am shooting with them so I can deliver footage to an editor working with other Sony footage to edit it all easily. Am I correct in thinking that's possible?
Seems much nicer for photo mode because of the detail that's still in jpeg. 3:09 shows the limitations where the blacks are just destroyed already in some cases, or maybe reducing contrast then bringing it back in post will help? but that defeats the purpose
Hi Josh. I love the preset in lightroom. But I am trying to get it on my S5ii and every time I try to load the .cube file I get the message "reading LUT file failed." Do you have any ideas how to fox this or get around it? I am going through the same process you are are in the video.
It always seemed silly that on most cameras you're forced into shooting log just to get access to luts and wider dynamic range. I've had way too many jobs where I was asked to hand off log footage to production and the editor either didn't even apply the lut I gave them or the director got used to looking at log and fell in love with it somehow so I avoid shooting log unless I know either I'll be the colorist or a colorist will be hired for the job. I love that cameras have started adding the capability to bake luts and I use it a ton on my Canon (CP Look) and Sony (PPLUT) cameras all the time.
OMG this kills me! I've had this happen to me at least 3 times where I shot in log and handed off the footage and they didn't grade it. One time, I even specifically asked the director to let me help them color it and they just left the full FEATURE length film in slog2.
@@datalaforge wow that's crazy. Yeah I've had this happen on web series for Bloomberg and Esquire, among many others, where I was kinda dumbfounded that that could happen. Now I only shoot log if I can shoot baked proxies simultaneously for the editor and director to see so they know the log is not the look after editing lutted proxies. For smaller work I just bake the color all the time now, that way worst case it looks like I saw on set.
I find vlog to be noisy in the shadows which I understand is just part of the sensor, but I find natural and other profiles to be really great. Would it make sense to shoot in cined and then apply a LUT (I know gamut has some cined conversions) like how you mentioned in second half? I assume that it would handle noise in shadows much better because of the built in noise reduction these profiles have but idk if it's really giving me more dynamic range vs just using something like natural profile which I love.
Are you forced to have your LUT baked in for photo and video? Or can you simply view your footage with the LUT applied in camera, but export VLOG/RAW photos to computer without the LUT applied?
Watching other vids yes. It appears lut can be just previewed and that feature is older and more widespread. It appears the 'baking in' is the new feature.
With what I speak about in this vid, yes it’s baked in. However , LUT view assist has been a feature in Lumix cameras for years and that does essentially that :)

Theoretically, yes. If you're able to load in a LUT that essentially changes the gamma curve to match something like S-Log 3 for example, then it could work.
