The Channel 5 ident with the lighted windows is really quite wonderful, exactly the kind of thing BBC1 should be doing with their number. Merry crimbus, thank you for all the xmas stuff you've put out this month. And many thanks to one Stuart Kenny (the XL crisps herald?) for sharing so much of this year's archive footage.
At least they bother with Christmas idents still in the UK. In Canada the big 3 national networks don't or barely do. The CBC is going with the remotely Christmas "Make the season yours" promo and ident set, just imagine some snow on a blueish backdrop. CTV has all but abandoned anything remotely Christmas by just using Christmas like colours on their stock promos (they don't even use the reindeer anymore). And I don't think Global ever bothered in the first place. Kinda sad when you think about it.
You're right. The Channel 5 idents they have now are gorgeous. Its flaw is that it makes the channel look a lot more upmarket than it really is. Though, I must admit, its programmes about Lidl and Aldi at christmas are genuinely interesting to me, and their All Creatures Great and Small revival is also very good too. Shame about the bad matinee movies they show
I think that is the problem with BBC1 showing the Christmas idents from the end of November too. The idents used to be special and tied the channel in with their big programmes for the season and/or the big film premieres that elevated everything to the next level. Its not really the same when the same idents have been introducing Bargain Hunt and Cash In The Attic during weekdays for a month beforehand.
@@colinr0380 I imagine that each of the idents, new or reused, probably costed quite a bit to produce, so from that 'bottom line' I can understand why you would want them up early. And, as Matthew said, you don't have trailer stings anymore. There's no real way to build things up. In my head, the second week of December is the earliest you should put up the TV decorations.
I'm getting fed up of BBC1's 'look at our special programme this year!' idents. Every bit as smug as the 'legendary double issue' of Radio Times, and with an unpleasant undercurrent of 'this is OUR big moneyspinner. It will have a twee animated something for the kiddies and a cast of hey-it's-them-that-you-like-Dave types for the Mums and Dads, plus perhaps a main actor who's supposedly sexy for the teens. It will be calculated to an inch of its life, bland, characterless and charmless. And don't forget to buy your Zog the Dragon backpack from BBC Enterprises now.'
I don't get the love for the 1991 BBC1 globe. I like the fluted 1 but with the globe it looked a mess. The ident looks like someone spilt a pint of stout in space and the globe is barely visible looking more like a bubble. The one should have just been on its own. My idea for BBC1 is to do what Swiss channel SRF1 does.
Excellent stuff - and by being released at lunchtime on Christmas Eve, absolutely correct timing for releasing Christmas idents as well.
Always one of the best things about my Christmas, without fail. Looking forward to it immensely.

The very same! I'll have to introduce Matthew to this great Northern delicacy! 😃
These christmas wrappings are becoming a tradition of mine, especially glad to see it this time round. Cheers
Another year, another fantastic Christmas Wrapping, thanks so much 🎄🎄🎄👍👍👍👍
Can't wait for your Lambie Nairn tribute, whenever it's uploaded!

Same in the US, where NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox etc do nothing.
Glorious christmas eve treat. Have a good un dude and stay safe.

I don't think it's AS self-obsessed as the "Legendary" comment from the Radio Times, but I agree it's bloody close.
Great as always :) Merry Christmas Matthew! Hope your have a relaxed one this year :)
