This is a very underrated movie, it's a shame it did so poorly in the box office. The movie's financial failure really took a bad toll on Cartoon Network as well. This movie deserves to be seen, and given praise.
However, I don't think seeing the episode about Mojo's backstory really affects the movie at all. I actually saw the movie before seeing most episodes of the show, and it didn't hinder the movie for me at all. The episode about Mojo's origin didn't really reveal anything the movie didn't, except flat out point out clearly how Mojo is ironically responsible for creating his arch enemies. Like the movie, the episode didn't actually reveal anything deep about Mojo, he was always a trouble making monkey. The episode tried making it sound like Mojo was only evil, because of his fake sob story of how he wants the professor's affection again, and blames the Power Puff girls for taking it from him, but we learn in the end that Mojo was lying, and he was never a caring monkey to begin with.

Ppg movie 8.5/10 ...solid story action comedy likeable cast great art ...good movie ...a little lacking early on in the animation department where they clearly cut corners and you need to see the show to get half the references which hurts its initial watchability but it compensates with good camera angles stylized backgrounds good music and gets so good later on so it only loses a point for all that imo ...after seeing The Brave Little Toaster films Kung Fu Panda films and now The Power Puff Girls Film and show most of pixar weird idea films like ratoutile cars toy story and deciding their all good it just goes to show any crazy idea can work if executed well ...these are weird starts ...like who would of thought when woopass girls was pitched it would eventually be a over shaded dark origin story on the big screen for a diabolical abandoned monkey voiced by the guy who voiced scream..what a world we live in ...

I remember Hoodwinked and how I liked its unique take on Little Red Riding Hood. This is a thoroughly enjoyable film and while you found the tag sequence funny, I personally found it overlong but it was a good prequel to the series nonetheless. The ending of this review was funny though and as for adding everything nice, I thought strawberries would be one of them.

Great review, I love this movie. Although I must admit, I feel like the movie made Mojo Jojo more interesting than the PPG's themselves. Oh hey, did you know that E.G. Daily was also the voice of Tommy from Rugrats, and that Tara Strong was also the voice of Timmy Turner from Fairly Odd Parents?

Ok, this show is amazing and I grew up with it as a kid. But I just have a few questions, like where did they get their clothes? Were they born with it? And how did they spontaneously learn english? Also what is with the light trails they leave behind? Is it one of their superpowers, or radioactive cloud of fart?

Came out in the wrong era ...sadly...the young girl main fan base which the merchandise appealed to who went to see it weren't expecting a dark violent origin story and boys were not gonna go out to a theatre in a room full of girls to be embarrassed to see this or ask their parents ....it felt written more for teens and young adult parents then 6-12 year old girls... ...it would be appreciated more in the last 5 years since hero films and action female films are more celebrated ..2002 was a tough era for action non pixar DreamWorks kids films after 9/11 ... Violence was a big issue...and it required watching the show ...

@@razkable I find it funny that people complain about this movie being too dark even though there's two episodes in the show that are MUCH darker than the film.

I love the show and the movie xd
And I agree about Mojo's backstory even in the origin episode I would have liked a bit more and the movie could have explored it but explained nothing that frustrates me since he's my favorite character plus it aged him too fast as in the episode he went through the aging process a bit more slowly, I feel that a scene with him and the professor were cut out of the movie I would have liked a eight minute scene of them at least, two minutes of him breaking everything, pushing the prof and walking off isn't enough.

Usually when it comes to films based on animated shows. There's some varying things that can be distracting. If the series has gone on long enough, and you've seen a majority of the episodes. Then your knowledge sort of carries over to the film. Not too mention that the origin episode clearly had Mojo accidentally creating The Powerpuff Girls. (Apologies for spoilers). But you do pose a good point of not relying on the source material to drawn in the audience. (Fun Fact: Did you know Roger L Jackson also provided the voice of The Ghostface Killer in the Scream franchises? If so. Then my bad)
Another great review as always Jam. Keep up the great work.

And I think a film can draw important information from it's source material but it needs to recap or repeat itself in a natural way, for the benefit of new audiences. This movie takes half of the information from the origin episode and could have easily shown it all.

To be fair, the important parts of "Mr Mojo's Rising" were shown in the movie. However, as a fan of the show, I don't think this movie was written for the fans. I didn't really enjoy it, actually. I was only seven when I saw it.

I remember seeing this, but I saw it split up into a two part introduction episode to the powerpuff girls series on the website I was watching it on :/ I did really like it though, the animation and art style of this show is so great and I love how it simultaneously mimics the simple coloured style of hanna barbera and similar cartoons, but also looks (at the time anyway) refreshingly modern and slick. Looking forward to your opinion on Hoodwinked though XD I really did like that movie but I know it's far from perfect.

I disagree with you on the whole idea that a film needs to stand on its own 100% of the time. Its a TV show turned into a movie, its not for you. Its for the people who watch, or watched the show. What about the MCU, infinity war, or endgame. Or sequels in general. Or books Its part of a bigger fictional universe. Go back and watch it, you can dismiss all the people who know the TV shows or the original movie and go back and explain what happen because someone decided to walk in on the third act of a series. Now if the movie is trying to be its own thing then fine you can judge it like that, if it fails to introduce us to the characters, or explain who they are as “people”. Then ya go right ahead .

While TV Spin off films are made for fans of the shows, they are also venturing into the medium of theatrical film, they are expanding their potential audiences beyond the fans, welcoming movie fans, film critics, and general audiences into the mix too, whether they intend to or not, it's just the inherent result of the decision to turn a TV show into a cinema released feature.
These kinds of films can't have their cake and eat it too, by catering to a fanbase while also wanting to be showcased to the wider zeitgeist. There are films based on TV Shows that don't require fandom experience too, from the South Park movie to the Beavis & Butthead movie, so no one can instantly assume that they're bound to be alienated.
If I tell 5 friends a personal story all the way through, making sure they know everything important, of course they will enjoy and understand it. However, if I carry on telling that same story to a bigger crowd, skipping everything I told those 5 friends, the crowd has every right to feel confused or let down, because they are missing important context, and that's bad storytelling.
Once a show becomes a film for cinemas, it's suddenly in the same field as millions of other movies, and having a narrative that only functions with audience's knowledge of the source material, drastically limits it's strength as a piece of narrative film. If a TV show wants to tell a story just for fans, it can always have a multi-part story or a season arc, because it's entering the lion's den once it decides to carry a narrative on in another medium. If a movie wants to carry on a story in another film, make a sequel, as long as it's clear that it's a sequel.
This is also the inherent problem with shared fictional universes, only die hard fans will appreciate the bigger picture, making the smaller pieces harder to appreciate as entries in cinema history, because the narrative's coherency is being sacrificed in favor of rewarding those who watched more entries in the franchise. The whole concept is a flawed filmmaking technique in my opinion, because it puts fanservice before solid storytelling.
I have this stance because I love film, with a huge passion, and putting fanservice before making a good film isn't wise to me. I want great movies, not films that only exist to make fans feel special for buying all the franchise entries. Great films stand on their own merits, anything else is like selling a book with missing pages.
