Right now, and thanks to this channel, I am listening and enjoying Dvorak's Rusalka. I feel I have "discovered" the Song to the Moon aria, which I enjoy immensely. A while back you alluded to the possible charge of sexism in Mozart's The Magic Flute and I could not get on board with that and I wrote why at the time. However, having listened to Rusalka, I would proffer Rusalka as being guilty of that charge in a much clearer manner. The personification of female beauty set to allure men to their death? And the price of her genuine love for the prince seeing her cast to the depths. Why so dark for her? On the plus side, the prince's soul is saved (by Rusalka's selflessness).
Hahaha!!! yes! I am not singling out the Magic Flute as the only sexist opera... Rusalka is extremely sexist (just like the little mermaid) I will make a whole video on my critical opinion of the story if you like. I have loads of rants. What do you think? Should I make it??
@@VivsGreen Absolutely. A critical synopsis of Rusalka would be a great idea. There are plenty of interesting themes explored in Rusalka, sexism being just one. Societal norms and expectations (for both men and women), the price of true love, the futility of sacrifice and the limitations experienced through the human condition, in general, are there in this fairy tale setting. Plus it's available to watch online, which is a plus so anyone can judge for themselves to see whether or not they agree.
