  • In the latest video from the OA UA-cam channel, international breathing expert and founder of Oxygen Advantage, Patrick McKeown explains a DEEP breath.
In a recent examination of UA-cam comments, Patrick was very surprised to read a comment stating that he doesn't advocate deep breaths.
In fact, Patrick very much advocates deep breathing. It is how the term 'deep' breathing is interpreted that is very important.
In this video Patrick breaks down what he means by "deep" breathing. He explains how deep breathing is not the same as 'big' breathing.
He also explains how breathing 'low' through the nose into the lower regions of the lungs uses the diaphragm and preferably the breathing muscles of the lower ribs.
Big breaths in through the mouth and into the upper chest constitute shallow and NOT deep breathing.

Thanks for this Partick. Although what i think most people interpret as seep breathing is filling up the lungs fully, ie. Abdomen as well as chest expand, normally abdomen first, chest follows.

      Exactly @dafe3795
Too many people think a deep breath is a big gulp through the mouth into the upper chest and that is not efficient breathing and definitely not 'deep'.
It should be through the nose, deep into the lungs using the diaphragm and other breathing muscles in the lower chest and abdomen.

    [Meta Feedback]:
The audio on your videos is always very quiet.
In fact, you're almost inaudible through some weaker built-in monitor speakers.
(You'll also notice that when comparing it with other UA-cam videos.)
To fix this, it might already be enough to hit "normalize" on the audio track before uploading your video.

Thanks for the video and all your work!
    One question keeps bothering me.
    - You suggest that mouth breathing 'tends' to generate shallow breathes.
    - However, I 'can' deep breathe through my mouth.
    - I believe you've also said that the mouth allows for intaking greater quantities of air.
    - In a relatively uncomplicated sport like running, I have the luxury of giving consistent cognitive attention to my lungs.
Wouldn't it an advantage for me to deep breathe through my mouth while running?

      Overall no @MrMatt-qs2ck
It may be different for you but nose breathing during running is the better way to go based on the scientific evidence we've seen.
We have a long form article on the benefits of running that may be of interest to you.

Random question….if you were diagnosed with COPD and asthma today what would you do?

If I didn't know the functional breathing I know now, I would probably do what I did 20 years ago and learn the Buteyko breathing method. It's what started me on my breathing journey and it's what we advise for people with health issues like asthma, COPD, rhinitis, anxiety, sleep apnea and more to do.

Doctors diagnose breathing from back while asking person to cough. By default should be done from front on direct lung's. So , I started doing breathing while focusing on back , ie trying to visualize and. Sense breathong from back and it helps.. tangling sensation, brain fog , lungs relaxed... Not sure if there is science here or only imagination !!!
