The rythm of this song imitates a galoping horse. The lyrics talk about a cossac going to war. The song is uplifting despite the cossac acknowledging that he may not come back to the girl he loves. In my opinion the song sounds like it could have been sung by cossacs going to war to cheer themselves up when they were going itp war.

Yes, there is a similarity with "Falcons". But "Їхав козак за Дунай" is older. Judging by the wiki, it has been known since at least the middle of the 18th century. Its authorship is attributed to the Cossack poet Simeon Klimovsky. The wiki says that at one time the song was very popular and was translated into German, Russian and French. Therefore, I would not be surprised if the "Falcons" were inspired by this melody.
Also, the encyclopedia says that many new texts were written that used the melody from "Їхав козак за Дунай" - arias, operas, marches and much more. In 1808, the Prussian poet Tigde created his own adaptation of the text, which today is considered a German folk song, known as "Schöne Minka, ich muß scheiden".
To be honest, I didn't know what a complicated story this song had. After doing this little research, I'm surprised.

@@UNCLEMOMO I think this song was written in the last third of the 18th century after the destruction of the Zaporizhian Sich by russian empress Catherine II and the resettlement of the Cossacks to the Ottoman Empire across the Danube River. The song is definitely related to this event. By the way, another well-known Ukrainian song “Twittering Nightingale” is probably connected with these events too as well as the opera "Zaporozhets beyond the Danube".
