    To all you guys saying the BMD was wrong, it's not wrong. Different disciplines of engineering have different standards, in some specialisations they plot positive bending moments downwards as it models what the actual beam deflection would look like.

    • @ymxjack
      @ymxjack 8 років тому +5

      True, if you also look at it this way, the udl acts downward making it tension in the bottom and compression at the top, hence the sagging curve. Thus, the BMD shows correctly how the beam would bend based on all the loads acting. Just a method of thumb, if you ever forget how to draw the BMD (above or below the datum), then just look at the UDL and imagine how it would act in real life. If you aint got an UDL to look at then...um, im sure you'll be able to figure out that the world is upside down.

    The note at the start of the video stated that the BMD will be flipped - so + Moment is shown down (-y axis). This is often done to better visualize the deflection and where the tension reinforcing steel should be placed. + Moment has compression on the top surface and tension on the bottom. So if you are supposed to plot the BMD with +Moment on the + y axis, just flip the image vertically. The rest of the procedure is still valid

    • @hdot2613

      I think he's drawn the positive values for the BMD on a negative axis. If he plotted the points on a positive axis, he should get a convex increasing function from 0 to 3m ranging from 0 to 90kN/m.

    The BMD should be positive.. as the load is making the beam saggy hence the bending is occuring in a positive direction. Even further maximam BM occurs where SF=0 hence it cannot be -90KNm considering this case!

    it depends.
    usually, we take the shear force diagram as, above the x axis as POSITIVE and below, NEGATIVE.
    In bending moment diagram, its vice versa. below is POSITIVE and above is NEGATIVE.
    correct me if im wrong :)

    Shear force is defined as a force which acts parallel to surface. Then why is it always represented perpendicular to beam in SFD?

    • @thestranded7693
      @thestranded7693 8 років тому

      no shear force is the force that acts perpendicular to the cross section of the beam
