    I respect you melon but as a very long time fan of both Lana and Taylor, nah, there's no Lana in this album. And it bugs me so much that people will compare literally anything a female artist does to Lana if she has breathy vocals/piano/uses vintage imagery or writes sad songs. I've seen the comparisons with Billie, Ariana, *relentlessly* with Halsey, Lorde, Mitski, Taylor, etc etc. Those artists sound almost nothing alike, yet somehow they're also all ripping off Lana? How does that make sense? Taylor has been a storyteller for her entire career, she's always used Americana imagery especially in her country days, if anything she's ripping herself off with some of these songs (Betty could easily be from any of her first 3 albums, the whole album is using the same aesthetic she did years ago for Safe and Sound). Not to mention that everything Lana does is inspired by other artists before her, she's very transparent about that. And sure she was the first to combine certain aesthetics and get mainstream recognition, but she didn't invent vintage Americana, breathy vocals, female indie, melancholic lyrics etc. She doesn't own the entirety of female alt pop. The *only* time I'd personally argue Taylor ripped off Lana was with Wildest Dreams. Also I thought we all agreed that in that statement Lana made, it was ridiculous when she tried to claim she's the founder of all this stuff? So why are we validating her now??

    • @connie9343
      @connie9343 3 роки тому +129

      also, taylor swift has been working with antonoff for years, and it really made him a popular choice for other artists to work with. lana’s most recent album wouldn’t have had that sound if taylor had not braved working with jack in the first place. and i love lana’s music, absolutely not discrediting her, but i’m tired of melon being embarrassed to admit he enjoys songs by taylor, and downplaying her talent

    • @agnusredel3709
      @agnusredel3709 3 роки тому +14

      Lana never said she’s the founder of this stuff?? She said other female alt singers bash her for singing about domestic violence while she has always been into that narrative. Lana would never say something like that. she’s surprisingly very humble for an artist at that top tier level.

      I've been a Swiftie for longer than I've been a Lana fan; I love them both so much. Wildest Dreams (who's not co-written nor produced by Jack) and Cardigan sound hella a lot Taylor overtly channeling Lana. Denying sound (especially the visual cues sepcifically with WD) similarities is just being consciously deaf/blind.
      Channeling another artists is common but had been too obvious in some songs.

    I love Lana, and I listen to all her albums on the regular. But I'm failing to see how folklore is "derivative" of her. The only remotely similar song was Cardigan-which in my opinion was done really well. The initial first 30ish seconds sounded Lana influenced (mainly bc of the delivery of the lyrics and the instrumental) but as the song progresses it clear to any veteran swiftie this is very much a Taylor song, especially when the bridge comes on. It was a perfect mix of outside influence and her own style. As for the other songs, I don't see it at all. Even on Stan Twitter-which is known for being kinda toxic-almost all Lana Stan pages are just noting Cardigan sounds like a Lana song and they are congratulating Taylor.

She didn't invent that style, one can argue, but it's a prominent thing in her music and people denying it are just overlooking the song Cardigan's flaws tbh).

For example, "dear john" fuuuuuck is so clever i was listening to it today and was blown away once again. And of course, her magnum opus "all too well" (that for some huge fans has been dethroned by folklore/evermore tracks haha) I have become a huge fan and i cannot believe the media has painted her as shallow. Even her song blank space (one of my faves) has been so overplayed people don't appreciate how great it is, not just storytelling wise, but as a pop song! Such a great funny pop song in which taylor laughs at the way the media paint her. Idk. If you liked folklore you should check out more taylor because she's always been a master lyricist and a great artist. Just because she's mainstream doesn't mean she's bad.

      I’m on the fence with this comment. Folklore and evermore were the albums that made a Taylor Swift fan. Maybe not a fan perse, but I was/am interested in what she’ll do next and intrigued by her storytelling and creative ideas featured on both albums. I listened to her earlier work (Lover, reputation, Red, etc.) and her recent work before folklore didn’t captivate me as it sounded more like generic pop with a narcissistic and petty attitude like on songs Look What You Made Me Do and Bad Blood. Her master lyricism truly comes out on her 2020 albums as she dives into other characters instead of herself.

    The amount of eye rolls I gave every single time Anthony claimed a certain song was the result of Taylor being derivative by copying Lana Del Rey is baffling. Lana did not create the indie-folk genre and there a lot of other musicians that came before her that were doing this style - and frankly, way better.
    You also have to factor in that Taylor and Lana share the same collaborator, Jack Antonoff, who has continuously worked with Taylor years before Lana came into the picture.

    Okay Sir, you’re mistaken. Cardigan is phenomenal. And Seven is my favorite song off the album. Lanas big writer on NFR, Jack Antinof, worked with Taylor on this album. Thats why you’re hearing so much Lana influences. And Taylor is growing. She’s 30 years old. We’re going to see her sounds change. And Lana is VERY mature lyrically, so I’m not surprised Taylor would emulate that style. It’s not a steal. It’s Taylors version of darkness and depth. It’s amazing. The whole album hit me like a ton of bricks and it’s quickly becoming my favorite album ever. The sounds are INTENTIONAL. It’s meant to sound nostalgic.

I do agree sometimes she overcompensates with fillers, but I felt every song in folklore was integral to the larger storytelling that was at play, I wouldn’t want any of them to go away. And that’s saying a lot with the knowledge that I’m waiting impatiently for the bonus track coming out with the physical CD, making it 17 songs! Lol
