  • Based on real life war diaries, Before Dawn is an epic retelling of one of Australia’s biggest victories during WW1.
Jim Collins, a young man from the outback, leaves his family-run sheep station to join the ANZAC and fight on the western front with hopes of making a difference. Soon, the realities of the muddy, ruthless, and entirely unforgiving war takes its toll on Jim. As the men in the battalion are whittled away and hope becomes a distant memory, a final chance at redemption at the Battle of the Hindenburg Line, one of Australia’s greatest WW1 military victories. Jim must risk death or forever carry the burden of leaving yet another man behind.
    DIRECTOR: Jordon Prince - Wright
CAST: Levi Miller, Travis Jeffery, Ed Oxenbould, Stephen Peacocke

Great to see a film about the Australian experience in WWI, it was a huge trauma for Australia. 100 000 Aussies died in WWI out of 160 000 in all wars combined. Back then the entire population was only about 4 million. Every town in Australia has a WWI memorial paid for by citizens and they're very sombre places, even today.

At the time, as Colonial entities- we were called upon by the British to do all the heavy lifting. And as volunteer forces - we brought the fight to the enemy time and time again. Not many people can say they have created a legacy.
You have created something that is timeless, that will never age, that can never be touched or forgotten.
    Thank you."
I only wish I had added " thank you for honouring and preserving our history, not letting people forget."
I wasn't able to say my entire quote exactly the same but I hope the cast that I met sees this so I can thank them once again.

Looks good. I do wish it well. I'll pay. Here is a small yarn:
Pozières- 1916; Stung by the killing of mates, small parties of Australians, some specially detached, others 'prospecting on their own account for adventure and souvenirs, made their way amongst the heaps of rubble on both sides of the Albert-Bapaume road. The artillery on both sides was by this time almost silent, the gunners being tired and the respective staffs as yet uncertain where their own or the opposing infantry were situated. The adventurers could, therefore, wander through the ruins without fear of shell fire, searching for the openings of cellars and dugouts where snipers were suspected of hiding and rolling Phosphorus bombs into them. Throughout the village, isolated Australians could be seen 'ratting' occasional fugitives from rubble heaps, chasing terrified and shrieking Germans and killing them with the bayonet or shooting them from the shoulder at those who got away. Then they sat down on the doorsteps to smoke and wait for others to bolt from the cellars. This grim sport for so in the fury of war it was regarded, was not without great risk to the hunter.

Look, it's an Australian movie made about an Australian experience in one particular war we were in. We know very well that other nations did their own thing and have their own military history that very often brushes alongside ours, we remember and commemorate that. We know Kiwi's, Poms, French and New Foundlanders also served and died at Gallipoli. We also know we often fought side by side with the French, the British, the Canadians, The Kiwi's and the Americans also in WW1 and a host of other nations in subsequent wars. But it's not up to the Australian people or Film Industry to show YOUR HISTORY or hold events for YOUR HISTORY. Why not go have a whine over on the Kiwi Film Making or British Film making or Canadian Film making pages and whinge why you aren't seeing any of 'your' movies there. Petition YOUR local governments and councils to commemorate YOUR special events and history. It's not our job to commemorate YOUR HISTORY for you. Much like Hollywood isn't making YOUR War Movies either. We commemorate parts of our Military History, sucks for you that your country doesn't.
I'm far more incensed that that Sergeant is running around with his slouchie on rather than his tin lid, he also loaded MkVI rounds into his rifle from a stripper clip in 1918, and none of them are carrying SBR's - which were kinda important at that time ...

Don't worry, you always had the best WWI film. A true narrative masterpiece. The crème de la crème. The pièce de résistance.
      Passchendaele (2008).
No but for real, it's probably because the Canadians don't really have any recognizable battles or struggles in WWI.
Sure, there's Vimy Ridge, but at the end of the day it was just a hill, and the Canadians suffered the same amount of casualties pretty average for any generic WWI battle. The Germans suffered similar casualty figures in just the first 3 days of the War, before the first battle of the war even reached it's halfway mark. The Canadian Army's "bloodiest day" was the average British or German day. The "Action of 22 August 1917" was so generic and normal for the combatants, it doesn't even have a "Battle of" name and still resulted in over 1,000 more casualties than Canadian deaths at Vimy Ridge.
Vimy Ridge didn't even have any impact either, the Germans didn't even consider it a loss; they never even attempted to retake it due to it's insignificance in the region.
The only two other events I can think of regarding Canada are the Second Battle of Passchendaele and the Battle of Cambrai, but both of these had similar or larger contributions made by other nations .
Let's also mention casualties. We appreciate the sacrifices Canada's young men made, of course. But in terms of troops deployed and casualties taken.. well...
At the end of the day, Canada committed just 650,000 men, of which about 66,000 died (0.83% of country's population). Britain committed 6,000,000 men, of which about 880,000 died (1.9% of pop.), Germany called up 13,000,000 with 2,037,000 dying (3.04%), France called up 8,000,000 with 1,300,000 dying (3.25% of total pop).
Even Australia called up 416,809 men, of which 58,961 died (1.4%). With half the population of Canada, the Aussies still provided two thirds the amount of troops Canada did. Even despite having a third less troops, they still suffered almost identical death counts.
Again, I hate to say it, especially because Canada still sacrificed so many men for our freedoms, but the fact of the matter is from a Hollywood perspective, Canada:
      1. Didn't suffer nearly as much as basically any other nation involved.
      2. Didn't contribute anywhere close as much to basically any other nation involved.
      3. Took part in a significantly lower amount of battles, campaigns and other key events compared to most other nations.
It's horrible, but when it comes to filmmaking, there's so little story to tell compared to any other nation they randomly pick out of a hat.

It's about 2 brothers who end up fighting against each other as 1 joins the Sth Korean Army & the other after being passed over, runs off becomes a communist & fights for the North Koreans. It's gory & right up there visually with SPR or Enemy at the Gates. It's a excellent Korean war film with a great story & choc full of the horrors of war.
