    I went to the gym this morning to do a treadmill run which I never do but the weather was cold and horrible. The gym was absolutely jammed with all the new year newbies. There wasn’t a free machine to do anything. I went home in a strop thinking I should go out for a run but had no motivation, then I saw you’d posted a new video and literally the first words were ‘show’ up, so I went straight out the door, did an interval run and feel so much better and my bad mood has gone. Thanks so much. I’ll watch the video now😂

    My tip, as an "average" runner in my late 50s, is to prioritise still being able to run in 10+ years over being able to run faster/longer this year. I would love to run a marathon in under 4 hours (a 30-minute improvement), but it's even more important for me to still be doing a Parkrun when I'm 70 (at whatever pace).
    I think it's true when you're 20 too. Do whatever you have to do so that you're still running in 10+ years’ time - whether that's avoiding injury or staying motivated.

    • @MrSeedi76
      @MrSeedi76 4 дні тому +5

      Very true. When people ask me what my running goal is (I'm 48 and started running about a year ago after 2 weeks in the hospital with a clogged artery) - it's to run injury free 6 days a week for the rest of my life.

    • @actuallymeg

      This is something I am learning to focus on. Recently I've been sidelined by shin splints after taking on an intense training plan and it has led me to conclude that I would rather be able to keep running without injury and get better very slowly vs a plan that promises a huge payoff but has huge risk associated with it, too.

      A brilliant goal!

    • @lisinbondi1240
      @lisinbondi1240 4 дні тому +4

      love your goal - mine is similar - I do a 14km race (Sydney's City to Surf) every year and am in the 65-70 age group and in the top 10 % now (I have never been in the top 10% of anything) My goal is to be top 5% once I hit the 70-75 group - a classic ' the older I get the(relatively) faster I am :-)

  • @CaptainBrash

    Great to see Anna back.
    I'd add, you never regret going for a run. (Unless it's the one that injured you)
    And there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad preparation.
    Also I'd love a Run.Improve.Repeat sweater and running vest.

    I did a series of 5ks our local run club does last year. There was 1 guy at every race who was always a few minutes ahead of me that I started using as a pacer. He has no idea he was my rival but keeping up with him got me running faster through a few races lol

    i've been running for 39 years. I run because i love it. It's the purest most basic form of exercise. And yet nowadays it's all about plans and goals and what should and shouldn't be done. Very sad. Just run.....

    My running goals for this year were to run a couple of trail ultras I've done previously and loved, and to add in a 116km event towards the end of the year.
    My goals have changed after a tumour was found in my brain. Benign, but tangled up with my brainstem and a bunch of important stuff. So now it's run, lift, and keep my body healthy and ready to face a scary surgery and then an uncertain recovery.
    Turns out I've been training all these years for the ultra I never knew I'd have to face.
    Run with joy folks, it's such a gift. 🎁

    As I was running home tonight in the sub-zero Arctic cold blast was thinking I should share this unusual tip of praying the rosary as I run. It won't make you faster but it sure helps the pain as you dodge ice patches and gets you out of your lactate-infused coma a bit, meditating on and for the world around you. Surprisingly, the rosary in a year by Fr. Mark Ames (also a very cool Franciscan) is actually the number one podcast at the beginning of 2025 on Apple Podcasts, so go check it out and make your scrumptious cold runs a little warmer. Peace

    Nothing beats mileage (for me) when it comes to a race performance. There is nothing more frustrating than training at 75% and then fail at the race after an 18 week training.
    I started running at age 56 (hating running for all my life) and now I am starting to train for my sixth marathon.

    yes Sarah!!! - Although there's danger in the whole "comparison is the thief of joy" thing, having someone to gently train with and race against is a great way to stay motivated and provide mutual encouragment.
    I find this even more motivating if your training buddy/competitor is significantly younger. There's real pride in "defeating the aging process" and keeping up with someone athletic who's half your age! 🦾
