This episode was partly inspired by real Japanese Akita dog Hachikō, who was born in Ōdate, Japan, in 1923. who would follow his owner Ueno Hidesaburō to the train station and wait for him to come home from work everyday, but in 1925 Ueno had a heart attack and died at work and after the death of his owner, Hachikō returned to the Shibuya train station the next day and every day after that for the next nine years until his death. There is a statue of Hachikō at shibuya station till this day.

It's a shame, Fry never realized that Seymour didn't find anyone else. He died waiting for his master to return.
But I doubt learning that will change his mind, regardless, because it's just a clone of Seymour. Not the real thing. It would be insulting to the good boy. Thus, He'll believe it's best to just let him rest in peace.

Never forget folks: in the episodes where Fry goes back in time back to the 21st century and has his time with Leeloo the narwhal, he ends up going back to live above Panucci's Pizza after setting Leeloo free. In a scene afterwards when hes going back to the spot above Panucci's (when Bender is waiting to kill Fry based on the orders of the scammer aliens), he passes by a happy and content Seymour still chilling outside the restaurant, giving him pats before entering the building. After this, Bender blows up the place, instantly calcifying Seymour, and turning Fry into "Lars", but regardless, Fry and Seymour DO end up being reunited, and the end of the episode in this video isn't nearly as heartbreaking as it seems in retrospect.
That said, when this first aired without the context supplied later on, it was a straight punch to the gut that no other episode had come even close to achieving before then, and is still one of my favorite episodes all these years later.
Edit: posted this comment before the end of the video where this was touched on, that's what i get for jumping the gun 😂

This episode definitely was what told the entire audience that Futurama was a completely different flavor of its raunchy counterparts ((family guy/American dad))
This episode gave so much emotional heart to something so common as the love of a pet and the emotions of loss in a way that was profound to me.
I saw this episode as a kid- and to this day that last part of Seymour breaks me into tears.
It really stings in a way only people that have a pet can feel.
I know it’s kinda retconned later in the series- but even then it was done in such a relieving and honestly clever way.
This series really was something special in that it actually made emotional connections in relationships that just are not found in any other adult media and paid them off in ways that was satisfactory.
I’m so glad you touched on this series- your insights are always so interesting and I can only imagine what you can do with this series.
I truly hope you’re keeping well, Shawn. My best to you.

Amazing episode that always makes me cry. Also fun fact, in the spanish dub of this episode, Seymour is called "Simurdiera" which roughly translates to "If he could bite". Kinda of a wierd way of translating Seymour but it is quite efective, especially considering Fry is the one who named him

    "Reptiles, cats, dogs"
[Glances over at the two roosters standing in my doorway, begging for cuddles]
In all seriousness, this was a great episode. My first, and honestly perhaps only experience with unconditional love has come from my pets, and I've dedicated my life up rescuing and rehabilitating roosters for about the past decade and a half.
I know that these animals are very smart and emotionally aware, and they do react with unrestrained joy when reunited with someone they love and trust. If I had the opportunity to "clone" a past pet in this way (assuming I can currently take care of it), I absolutely would. Even if I had reason to believe that they had lived a long, full life with someone else, I'd still relish the opportunity to work with that animal again, and if they DO remember me, all the better!
In my opinion, if the animal is cloned, memories intact, and lived a good life beyond the time you had with them... What's wrong with just giving them even MORE good memories?
I may also be very lenient in my expectations for an animal's behaviour upon being cloned, though. I work with roosters who either have nowhere else to go, or have been abused, so I'm used to a transition period of getting to know me, letting their guard down, working through their trauma, getting to trust me, and so on. I could only imagine that cloning would also have its own trauma and need for transition, but it's always so beautiful to watch their true personalities unfold as they learn that they're safe and with someone who understands and cares for them.
As for more Futurama episodes, by all means! I watched this show a LOT growing up, and I very much appreciated the fact that it was... I guess, smart. I hated Family Guy, was so-so with Simpson's, and honestly I enjoyed what I watched of King of the Hill, but I never really got into it. It felt too "sitcom-y" to me, and I HATE sitcoms. I think Futurama was just the right balance of intellectual and whimsical comedy for me.

    • @silversugar2140
      @silversugar2140 Місяць тому

Thank you so much for working with roosters. They are so misunderstood and beautiful animals. I wish I'd been in a better place mentally to give the ones I used to have a better life (I was a teenager at the time) but it warms my heart to know that there are so many people who still love and care for chickens as pets. Sometimes I miss having them but I know my asthma couldn't take their waste/dander anymore unfortunately. I still cherish one of the chicken feathers I still have from my favorite bantam though. Miss her so much. I wish I could have gotten some from my rooster too.

Jurassic Bark is sad as well, for sure
but Bender is kinda obnoxious throughout more of the episode and the song at the end might try a bit too hard

In fallout new vegas. The dlc lonesome road. You can find a fossil version of Seymore.

While this is sad Episode. It could have been FAR sadder. The original story was Fry finding his Mother. Which was turned down early on from her to Seymour. Each episode that focused on one of his family members is very sad in its own right.
Seymour, Jurrasic Bark. (edit) Patiently waiting on his master/friend to return.
Yancy Fry Jr.(his brother)- Luck of the Fryish "Son, I name you after my baby brother. Who I miss every day. I love you Phillip." (Edit, He never hated his brother. Was only jealous and wanted what he[Fry] had.
Mrs. Fry (Mother) - Episode King of Tones "I've thought a lot about you since you've left." from there, he proceeds to tell her about where he went. Sharing a heart felt hug, where she wakes up. See's his photo and smiles. Knowing that he's okay. (edit: While it often seemed she was a bit of distant form her sons. It was evident she was always there.)
Mr. Yancy Fry Sr. (Father) - "I'm only tough on you because I want you to be strong. One day, you may face adversities so obscure that I can't even conceive of them. But I know you'll pull through. I love you son." (Edit: He was weird and paranoid, but he wanted what was best for his sons)
He obviously knew that Seymour loved him unconditionally. But each Episode had Fry remember that his family, despite their oddities, truly loved him. Fry also admits it himself. "I convinced myself my life was crummy because I knew that I could never return." For all his stupidity, Fry was very intelligent.
Edit: I absolutely love this show. Have seen it far to many times to admit here.

Seymour waiting the lifetime for his human to return is actually based on a true story that happened in Japan. After a man died one day at work his dog waited at the train station for him the rest of his life.

Wow, I honestly forgot how deep this episode went! Definitely tearing up right now writing this. Sometimes love is so strong that never ends. It also goes to show, never assume that someone moves on in life, when their love is unconditional and everlasting. I honestly can relate with Seymore, in that if my best friend went missing, I would look everywhere for and wait forever for them to come back. Just overall deep episode ❤

Would love to see more Futurama but also Daria as I binged it for the first time the month prior to the pandemic and for whatever reason it's on my mind again.

Perhaps the biggest heartbreaking moment is when fry decided not to bring Seymour back, knowing that he only didnt bring him back because he felt he wasnt important enough to Seymour as if he could so easily forget the one who saved him

Sad dog related episodes of shows seemed like a trend in the late 90's-2000s. You got jurassic bark, remembrance of courage's past and that one depressing episode of samurai jack called tale of x9. On top of that there's this movie called thd plague dogs from 1982 that is an outright hazard to your heart. Dogs are loved animals and any of these episodes and especially that movie are not suitable for dog people.

Kid Danger: *wearing his mighty pup movie outfit* pony's best friend indeed! i had a mixed breed dog, Star. She was my best friend and she protect my grandfather, Larry the Pegasus. I remember when she got hurt, we took her to her local vet and she had leg surgery on her muscle. *tears up alittle letting tears roll down his face and pulls out a picture of himself and star*

To be fair fry had a motive to think that Seymour had a good life in my opinion and it’s because fry thought that his brother stole his lucky clover and changed his name and it was discovered it wasn’t him it was his nephew for a good reason maybe that let fry thought that Seymour had a good life
