I totally agree. There isn't much that compares to that as far as sad/humiliating moments in childhood go 😣 I'm glad that this episode didn't end up like that!
My thing with Angelica is this, she only acts out bc she's not getting the love/attention she needs from her parents. Not excusing her bad behavior, some discipline was needed but guidance was needed too, and she wasn't getting it. Instead, her parents threw gifts and junk food at her as a form of "love". So it makes sense that she's bratty. And i think to a certain level, Tommy knows that and has always known that. Which is why he still has a level of sympathy for her.
Yeah! In addition, she's always watching Charlotte (her mom) berate and be cruel to her assistant and be rude to others. Often snapping at people over the phone. The way Angelica sees it, her mommy must be right, right? "Mommy yells at and mistreats the people beneath her and that gets her whatever she wants, so if I treat the younger babies that way I'll get what I want too!"
Savannah's behavior is how a lot of teenage girls behave when they act as bullies. They pretend to have these bonds of sisterhood and frame their harrassment as helping.
I bet Savannah never had the love and care that Angelica's parents gave her. I bet she was jealous of that because it's likely that her own parents never gave her the love and care she needed. Hence, Savannah resented Angelica for that. I'm getting the idea that she and Kimiko(Kimi) could be sisters, and maybe she's projecting her insecurities on Angelica due to their parents' divorce. While she and Kira went on to find a happy life with Chaz and Chuckie, Savannah likely was ignored by Hiro and Wanda to focus on Kikiyu. This made her feel embittered because of this, as she felt betrayed by her own family.
One of the best portrayals of Angelica doesn’t even come from any of the cartoons that Nickelodeon has airs on TV, but rather in a newspaper comic strip where, rather than berating Chuckie for thinking that he can bring his mom back by stepping on sidewalk cracks, she stops her insult mid-sentence and asks Chuckie if stepping on the cracks are working. Peak Nice Angelica.
Angelica is an interesting character and actually a really good example of writing of a child in her position (in terms of family, upbringing, etc). She’s bratty and at times self-centered, but definitely not heartless when she understands the situation.
The reason I like Angelica is because time and again she shows that no one messes with Tommy and his group but her. She may be a bully, but she protects her dweebs from others.
I hated Angelica as a kid, but as an adult, I'm like, wait... every adult in her life thinks it's ok to just leave her unsupervised in a room full of babies. Let's set the parentification vibes aside for a minute and think about that: she's several years older, she knows more, she can do more, and she's stuck playing with people who can't possibly relate to her interests. I think I'd lash out and be bratty if I was four and that happened to me nearly every day.
I think the root of Angelica's problems are that she does not feel loved or cared for. Think about it. As a preteen she thinks she is going to be happy and accepted and thats all she wants. But, think about how she grew up. She had a mom who couldn't put her phone down and talk to her own daughter and a father who just give into her and give her, her own way all the time basically so that she wouldn't whine or bother him. She really had absent parents. Daddy could have bought her any toy she wanted but, that wasn't going to buy her what she needed from the start. She needed family that was going to give her attention and care enough to teach her to act right. Mom was absent and dad just gave her toys and things. Neither of them gave her time and that's what a kid needs most.
I dont think it was parentifying, cause they didn't tell her to watch them, it was 3 year old dropped off at daycare at her aunt and uncles house. Anglica was 3 in rugrats, Chuckie was 2, the others 1 and Dil was an infant. the adult were just bad at watching the kids

Are they worth the fact that while you shovel money or spend the night at work, they grow left to their own devices and are not needed by anyone? As a rule, this ends very badly. But if they have relatives on the maternal or paternal side, then they may still be lucky, because in this situation, for the most part, they have a chance that there will be no dire consequences
That's what set cartoons like Rugrats apart. They could've easily left Angelica be the villain with no redeemable qualities or depth. We need more kids' shows that don't insult their audience's intelligence
The saddest part is that it's like the Bowling For Soup song "High School Never Ends" with this type of judging/popularity playing into most social aspects as adults. The only thing that is fictional, however, is having the friends/family who will back you up NO MATTER WHAT. In fact, in most situations, people aren't morally intelligent enough to do it so will let it happen or backstab/contribute. That's the real folly is friends in these shows DON'T really exist.
To add on (if anyone cares), it makes sense. The ONE forced institutionalised thing ALL kids should undergo is school. Unless home schooled (which has it's own issues), you will learn & understand these social structures. As a result, it's not surprising it's like that as adults (as they are just grown up kids). In reality, most people don't change that much from their child selves so ALWAYS see how someone was in school & they are just a scaled up version of that.
@@infjmale91I’d say that’s less of an example of moral intelligence, and more an example of self-preservation based on cost to benifitial. If those friends backing you up would make no good to fix/help a situation, but would probably result in them being bullied anyway, backing their friend up would be a lose-lose situation. It’s extremely screwed up situation, but one of the sad realities of the world.
We grew up with Angelica, too. She was OUR mean cousin, too. So seeing someone be mean to a character that we have spent so much time with, makes us feel bad for her. It's like Tommy said, it's one thing when you bag on someone you know really well, it's another for an outsider to do it.
I do like how All Grown Up softens Angelica. She's still a brat and a bit of a mean girl, but this episode shows she truly loves Tommy and Dill like brothers, and the rest of the group are basically extended family to her. Her upbringing wasn't great due to her parents, but her aunt and uncle were always a safe space for her, and the group has been there for her.
to be fair in All grown up she’s way better than she was as a younger kid She’s more bossy and spoiled, but she’s not cruel or vindictive the same way she matured a lot as a preteen so to have someone be this manipulative and mean to her made us feel for her if angelica was the same as she was as a young kid, i don’t think this would have gotten so many of us to take her side.
I know All Grown Up may not be the most beloved show (even though I enjoy it) but something I think the show did really well was give Angelica more redeeming qualities. She may still talk down to Tommy and the gang and be cruel at times but I feel like she's also matured in a few ways. An example I always remembered was when she befriended a sick child. I like how she was able to at least somewhat grow out of her cruel and evil ways from when she was a toddler.
I completely agree. Growing up watching Rugrats as a kid, I always hoped for more moments where Angelica was kind to the babies and we very rarely got that. In the original show, it was mostly her the babies and the parents until Suzie came along, middle school meant a larger peer group and a more complex social hierarchy for the character to exist in.
You can annoyed by her at most but when shes bullied and hurt you feel for her honesty her brattiness comes from the fact her dad constantly spoils her and her mom being constantly neglectful has led her to develop sever abandonment issues and just being upset with how her parents were personally once she reached her 13 year old self she actually became nice and lovable
Not just that, but as a toddler her example on how to behave was Charlotte. "Lash out at those who you see as beneath you, and you'll get what you want" is clearly a behavior she learned from watching Charlotte's interactions with assistants and coworkers. Seeing her mistreat them and get what she wants. So, Angelica is simply emulating her mother, who she sees as a powerful boss lady And then her dad is the biggest pushover and just lets the neglect and bad examples of parenting continue
Doesn't help that in the original series, Drew often bullied Stu verbally about not having a traditional job and even called him stupid a few times for disagreeing with him and quite loudly too. There is no way Angelica didn't witness this and then do the same to the babies because she is too young to understand that is just something that you shouldn't do. Drew was a pushover when it came to Angelica but he was still a bully to Stu even if it was with words only.
Weirdly enough, one of my favorite episodes of All Grown Up was actually another Angelica-centered episode. It’s the one where Charlotte gets ousted as CEO of her company, and since she no longer has a job to keep her busy she tries bonding with Angelica. It showed just how difficult it is to reconnect with a kid when all that child knows from you is neglect. I feel like this show and Rugrats got a surprising amount of mileage out of Angelica plots, even though as a character she’s mostly a jerk. It’s cool how they subtly gave depth to someone you weren’t even supposed to like.
I totally felt Angelica on that level, having a absent/neglectful parent trying to reconnect with you late into (like at the tail end of) your childhood. My dad was in the military, being deployed 3 times and sent to assignments for over a year, and the times he was around/at home with his family, he was more concerned doing *his own thing* than doing *family things*. He constantly pushed for me to do better every time he was around, straining what little relationship we had. When he was finally done with the military, I was graduating high school. He then wanted to be involved and supportive in my life (cause he finally had the free time to) right when I was becoming an adult; but I was so used to never having him around, his efforts didn’t mean much to me anymore (would’ve meant more when I was younger). Lesson I’ve learned, ‘don’t have kids if you know you can’t be there for them (if you’re too busy with work, too tired, or too self focused)’. Kids from age 3-12 are the most impressionable and will watch you actions; they will definitely feel some sort of neglect if you cannot be there for them during that period. (Your only grace period is from age 1-2, as most infants/toddlers don’t form strong/core memories yet; and by age 13 and up, most teens stop caring about their parents’ attention and want to be more independent with their own friends and lives). Age 3-12 is where you want to form those strong core family memories that will stick with them into adulthood.

@@franciscovilcheavila960 When my dad was around/at home, he was strict towards me growing up as the oldest child, wanting me to be independent and self sufficient, but in the process he was very pushy and didn’t help much when I struggled (thinking struggling was a teaching tool), wanting me to do it on my own. It got to the point where I stopped relying on him (as in asking him for things or help). The tipping point was when I was graduating, as I asked him to help with paying for my graduation equipment (gown, cap, and plaque), but he told me to pay for it myself. On the day of graduation (after I paid for my stuff weeks prior), he tried to congratulate me by giving me money, but I was so burnt at that point I refused and told him I didn’t need his help. He was taken aback by my comment/refusal, and though a little defensive, he didn’t push the issue further. Afterwards (weeks later) he started being more approachable, attentive, and supportive of my future, wanting to help with college or help find work. He took the initiative to spent more time with me and was more open with his affections. Come to find out, my little act of “rebellion” was a wake-up call for him. He had a talk with my mom and his own mother (my grandmother), where they both chastised him for how he treated me in the past, saying that he was going to have a relationship with his daughter like he had with his father (he grew up with a distant father, and at a point hated him; it wasn’t until his adulthood where he came to bury the hatchet and rekindle their relationship). This caused him to change his attitude as he didn’t want to grow distant from his kids and end up similar to his dad. I was already 18 when his realization happened, so I went my whole childhood without a proper father-daughter relationship. That’s why his change didn’t have much of an impact on me, I felt it was too late. The most we could’ve done was have a decent ADULT parent-child relationship going forward.

I can’t believe I forgot that Angelica has a cat that eerily resembles her. It even look a bit aged and everything. I applaud them for remembering that minor detail in the sequel series, even if it was just a brief cameo.
What Tommy says is true. With family, it's **mostly** good natured fun because you know your family loves you. But outsiders, it's more bullying, especially if they don't know you.
I think its neat that Angeica came up with a list of things she knows would interest the Rugrats- like that just shows how well she knows them. Sure it was a way to get them to not be at her Birthday party, But she clearly did work to find stuff they would find interesting and present it to them
My whole thing with Angelica in all grown up is that she actually tried to be a good person in almost every episode that focuses on her (minus the pilot episode) and tends to actually learn lessons in them, so this sort of episode feels even worse for her considering Angelica, no pun intended, grew up a lot by the time of that series and wasn’t the constantly bratty character her younger self was, and was instead much more complex.
I just wanna point out that Savannah's invitation said 'annual'. So maybe the plan was not to only steal Angelicas 13th birthday away, but also the ones after that...
Also all grown up made me like angelica especially when it was her and tommy episodes it was honestly surprising to see her actually be their for essentially her baby brother because when you look at angelica and tommys relationship you noticed she treated him and dil as her brothers rather than cousins which was always heartwarming to see especially in rugrats in paris now listen here lady no one messes with my dumb babies but me
In the second movie, Angelica was mostly helping Coco out of fear of being hurt by the woman. Coco was about to hurt the girl and of course she was going to do whatever it took to stay safe. She also knew how Chuckie was about not having a mom and wanted to make him happy and she did overhear how Coco needed a kid to get her promotion. Angelica also noticed that Chuckie didn't like Coco very much and told her that she was never going to be able to be his new mother since she wasn't very nice. After watching Paris for the first time, I noticed that Angelica wasn't trying to be bad but rather acting on a very natural instinct of doing whatever needed to be done in order to protect herself from Coco. Remember Coco's male assistant rolled up his sleeve to get back all of the chocolate Angelica had eaten which implies that he was going to literally shove his hand into her mouth and physically make her sick and she was clearly terrified when Coco picked her up by the collar.
All Grown Up being the place to give Angelica more redeeming qualities makes a lot of sense narratively. She's quite literally grown up. Even as an emotional (pre)teen who still has a rocky relationship with the younger mains, she's still more mature than she was as a toddler, it's a lot easier for her to understand the dynamics she has with them and others, it makes it a lot easier for her to be a relatable and enjoyable character.
i wonder if most peaople go thugh "rotton" phase, most its teenage years but some its pre-pre-pre teen years, the worst is when its adult years where they are screw over and sew happy.
It's understandable that Angelica was a brat as a toddler because she was still a very young child just starting to fully understand how the world around her works. She clearly is imitating her parents and how they interact with others. Charlotte is very bossy and Angelica sees how her mother talks to Jonathan over the phone barking orders at him all the time while Drew verbally bullies Stu often and has told him that he was a 'bad' father and husband for not having a traditional job. He's even called Stu stupid for not wanting to work in an office.
@@NightmareRex6 There's a phase commonly called the terrible twos, its the age range when the sense of self really starts to develop and with that selfishness is common. It takes time to develop empathy for others after that. So given her age, being a brat isn't totally unexpected though definitely way beyond most kids.
She could be a brat, but at the end of the day she’s still a human being with her own issues and emotions to deal with. And I think she understands that Tommy is family even if she doesn’t always get along with him.
She was actually made as a foil to Angelica in the short run series Preschool Daze where their ‘feud’ began. Back then Angelica still attempted to be her friend recognizing they shared a similair take on things but Savanah always felt as though she was above Angelica because she thought her family was better she had better connections etc (I can’t recall she name dropped her sibling being important somehow) but it was interesting to watch and realize that this meant the two had been playing this mean girls game from preschool all the way to highschool and neither had changed. Some girls are meant to be low key frienemies for life I suppose.
I can't stand Savannah. Angelica's mean, but she's genuine. She keeps it real. Savannah's a cold strategic monster. Being sneaky makes her way more dangerous than Angelica.
Angelica may not have been the perfect angel as a three year old but she did understand whenever the babies really wanted something and did genuinely seem interested in helping them if she could. In the second movie, she did help Coco but I like to think of that as Angelica only doing it to try to keep herself safe subconsciously because the woman was threatening to hurt her and she knew that Chuckie wanted a new mother and overheard Coco saying that she needed to have a kid to get the promotion. Angelica just didn't know how far Coco would take things and was aware that Chuckie didn't like Coco and tried to tell her that the woman wasn't going to be a good mom to him and she did seem concerned about Chuckie's happiness being at stake.
Yep - what makes worse it’s not just a show. Girl/Woman world is still like this today. I don’t care how many things they try to make politically correct, somethings really never change. New faces, but it’s the same old game.
I’ve learned since elementary school to never throw a big party. All the big parties I had I didn’t really have any fun cause I wasn’t really friends with all the kids; they were just classmates and kids of my parents’ friends. In junior high onward, I realized having a small party with a select group of friends was much better. That’s how I spent my sweet sixteen, inviting a few friends to go on a overnight trip to an amusement park and hotel suite.
This happened to me as a kid and it happened to me this year. My girlfriend threw me a party and only three people besides her and my family showed up. This experience helped me contextualize my past experiences. It very embarrassing to not have people show up. There are people who don’t have anyone show up for them. Thankfully instead of humiliated I had a really good time with the small group of people. In retrospect people did show up for us. I’m very grateful for the few people who would show up for my birthday. I always make sure to show up for those people in return. Maybe it wasn’t everyone but it was the important people that did. Honestly experiences like this have that one could benefit of showing you who is actually important.
I’m sorry my 16th birthday was hard too. I’ve never really had a birthday party since I was 8 or 9. And it was a horrible day at school. But at least I got to see my big brother who I almost never get to see back then and now
I remember Tommy being popular in this show. Did I just imagine that or is there an episode where it's implied that a lot of people like him? He came off as the kind of cool kid that actually fits the idea of a "chill" and "popular" kid everyone wants to be around instead of the fictional version Angelica is aiming for.
Episode brother can you spare the time tommy wins a contest that was in the news. And TP+KF Chuckie fines an craving that kimi did years ago and decided to end he's friendship with tommy and the other kids try to get to be Tommy's best friend in place of Chuckie.
I think the thing that always made me feel a little bad for Angelica in Rugrats was just that she was a 3-4 year old who seemed to not get much attention from her parents. That's messed up for a toddler. I'm not saying it excuses her actions at all, but as an adult I just want to make sure little Angelica feels like someone cares about her 😭
I always liked Angelica, she was always one of my favorites. Her facade was so easy to see through, even more so as an adult. In retrospect, I think she suffers from a lot of childhood neglect, and one parent unknowingly putting a lot of pressure on her, and the other just ignored her completely and let her do whatever. If I could armchair psychologist for a moment: Angelica's situation feels like Golden Child syndrome, especially with the pressure Charlotte starts to put on her as a teen, probably the reasoning of Angelica being both an only child and a girl. Imagine its your 13th birthday-what feels like a huge milestone for a lot of pre-teens, and everyone you know ditches, and instead of your parents comforting you, you see your mom crying about frivolous things like canceled catering, bookings, and social status. Your own mom is acting like the child, and offers no comfort during this whole ordeal that is clearly _very_ important to Angelica. And on top of just having a lonely birthday, the reason for it would be totally avoidable if not for someone deliberately sabotaging it and rubbing it in her face the entire time. That's horrible! The poor girl is still a child! And god knows where her dead-beat father is the whole time either. Her picking on her little cousins (let's be honest, all the other parents hang out with and see each other _so_ often they might as well all be family.) reads as older sibling teasing more than anything malicious. That's not to say its not mean or a good thing, but she was literally four years old with a father than encouraged and praised her for any of her behaviors. Honestly, her picking on others could totally stem from a child thats frustrated and doesn't know/isn't given the means to communicate it healthily, or even darker taking what she learns from her parents out on others. (aka Drew's dribbled absentee nonsense, and Charlotte's 'take no shit' that can easily translate to perfectionism, demeaning behavior, unhealthy competitiveness, and a low self-esteem under all of it. And all from a very, _very_ young age.) Angelica I feel is just a very complicated character with many flaws, but also almost a tragic figure because you can see exactly why she's like that. She's a young girl with high expectations with herself and obsesses over being popular/being liked, but in times of conflict usually manages to be loyal to her family/friends, even if it takes her time to get there.
Also, it's potentially worth noting because I see it often enough: Golden Child syndrome does NOT equate a spoiled child growing up with loving overly-praising parents and a silver spoon in their mouth. It is a form of child abuse. (I experienced it myself, and have always been met with 'must've been nice' type rhetoric, despite being poor and having an abuser for a parent.) Golden Child Syndrome can start simple, 'my child is the cutest' 'my child is so talented', but comes from a competitive streak from the parent, that with age that child is given unrealistic to impossible standards, to be ✨ p e r f e c t ✨, and once the child begins to crack under the pressure, differ from their parents, fail a test/s, put on weight, be too tall/short, to start to contort against the mold they were placed in since birth-once that pedestal begins to crumble and you start to make mistakes-you become a disappointment. Kids with parents like this will constantly strive to bring back their parents attention-that praise. They can push themselves so hard they jeopardize their health, mental and physical, and the demands are so high and ever-changing that the child will eventually grow to be riddled with self-esteem issues and rarely see anything they do as 'good enough.' If they fail to fit the perfect cookie-cutter shape their parent (which is impossible) you feel like _nothing._ You can see this a lot with dance moms, or beauty pageant moms-the 'oooh look at my child aren't they perfect' but when they don't live up to that never-ending standard, when you are not perfect and exceptional, good at and _better_ than everyone else at _everything,_ you are treated like a failure. Which is to say I think this is what I believe Angelica is dealing with. Surprisingly I would argue it comes more from her dad, who does nothing but sing her praises non-stop in front of others, even when displaying negative behavior. Whereas at least her mom genuinely seems to think those things of her daughter and tries to encourage her to be strong and independent, probably due to the fact of how hard it would've been for Charlotte in the workplace at the time (that being a woman at a business career in the 90s).
I HATED Savannah! She was the absolute worst! Some of the other episodes also shows how manipulative she was. She was far worse than Angelica ever was! I also have a request for another All Grown Up video. Can you do one about where Angelica has to live with the Carmichael’s for a week? Looking forward to the next video!
@@DuskTillShawn I've now had the chance to fully watch the video. You made me successfully hate Savannah even more than I originally had, impressive. I still love the poetic justice of Angelica extending an olive branch to Savannah in the end. In her own special Angelica-flavored way, she proved herself the better person.
Growing up, I didn't watch Rugrats as much as other kids did. However, I was familiar with the character of Angelica. She was often portrayed as a spoiled brat and many people didn't like her. But now, as an adult, I see her in a different light. Angelica was just a young child, and it's not entirely her fault that she acted the way she did. Her parents never gave her the attention and love she needed. Instead, they showered her with material possessions and junk food, without any discipline. Looking back, I realize that parents are supposed to have some level of discipline towards their children. I feel sorry for Angelica, especially when I remember the episode where no one showed up to her birthday party. It's a heartbreaking reminder of how neglected and lonely she must have felt. One more important aspect that I would like to mention is that as I am studying Child Care Development in Community College, I have recently rewatched the show Rugrats and realized that Angelica, the antagonist, was only 3 years old. She was just a young child who didn't know any better. It is her parents who should be held responsible for her behavior. The way a child is brought up and treated by their parents greatly influences their actions. If the parents are neglectful and give in to their child's every demand without any hesitation, it reflects poor parenting. Angelica's parents need to attend parenting classes to learn how to properly raise a child. It is not Angelica's fault that she is misguided, but rather the result of her parents' parenting style.
Angelica was honestly always a crazy case… spoiled brat with a controlling mother like that, as an adult it’s easy to see how she got so entitled and ultimately messed up. But yeah. She’s still a person, and a young one at that. Angelica’s tragedy is purely the fact that she’s going to have to go through hell learning that the world doesn’t revolve around her. She’s been set up to be that one person that’s just hard to be around, and she’s already screwed up her relationships with close family. She’s so blessed to have family like Tommy who have such a heart of gold to care like that, and ultimately people that- for better or worse- are the closest thing to real friends she likely will ever have, given they know the real her and not the face she puts on for others ((shown in other episodes)). Genuinely… I feel bad for her at the end of it all. Honestly. Thanks for bringing this up… as honestly it brings to mind irl people that I bet we all have to deal with in some manner. We all have our own problems, jerks or not, it’s not always just cut and dry to be a jerk just to be one. Those need compassion the most.., Thanks for your insights, Shawn! Growing up I typically related to characters like Angelica and Courtney from As Told By Ginger. I'm happy that these characters' flaws are underlined, but that they're also humanized by their respective writers.
What I really like Rugrats and the way they show Angelica is that she isn’t evil- she’s a kid. A kid who is being negatively affected by her parents. While her actions are her own, it is made VERY obvious that her parents’ actions are affecting her. In the original show it was by them spoiling her to make up for not making enough time for her. When you are used to everything being done YOUR way, of course you’re going to be mean or “bossy” when you are in an environment that doesn’t give you that control. That’s how you think the world works. In All Grown Up, not only is her whole “I want to be part of the cool kids” totally natural, but it’s also in part due to her parents- especially her mother. Not only are her parents still spoiling her, but her mom is very concerned about appearances- valuing material wealth and beauty above most other things. This is rubbing off on Angelica who feels that to “looking” cool, rich and stylish are the most important things. While I can’t think of an episode that explicitly shows this, Charlotte is an accomplished business woman who knows the importance of networking with the “right” crowd. It wouldn’t be surprising if she was consciously or unconsciously making Angelica feel she needs to do the same thing.
Charlotte using "You never know where a [redacted] might end up" to convince Angelica to invite them kind of shows how even concepts like "family is family" can be processed through the networking lens for her, so I think you're onto something. Business is her life, and that businesslike mindset is becoming somewhat of a fundamental value in that branch of the Pickles family. I think Angelica's parents do try, but they prioritize career so highly they lost sight of how to really be good parents. By making more money, they can keep throwing money onto their daughter and tell themselves they're doing okay.
A three to four year old is definitely not evil. They may do bad things but you need to look past the morality factor and view the situation from the perspective that they are still young and growing and don't know any better. Just because they bluntly call someone "fat" does not mean that they are rude and understand what they've just said. You need to tell them when they've done wrong and why it's bad. Drew and Charlotte were also the worst role models for their daughter. She witnessed Charlotte being extremely bossy towards Jonathan and Drew frequently bullied Stu verbally and it was often loud as well. Of course Angelica is going to try to imitate her parents and think it is normal. All kids imitate the adult around them and not have any true understanding of why the adults do things like cooking and cleaning.
To me Savannah and her small group don't really seem popular they just seem more so cliquey elitist,snobbish and narcissistic then anything else.Even if you are a narcissist and you simply see yourself and your small posse of friends as being the elites and as people who other people are not fit to associate with thats definitely not synonymous with being popular.
There was also a 4 episode spin-off of Rugrats called preschool daze about Angelica and Suzie. I'm not sure when the show came out but Savanna and Angelica hated each other since preschool, because they wanted to be the best preschooler.
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Angelica was at least partially influenced by Helga from Hey Arnold. We know that Helga can be very blunt in her opinions, to the of being downright brutal in her honesty, and comes from a comparable background In fact the biggest difference is that for Helga, this was largely a mask to protect an otherwise sensitive girl, whereas with Angelica, it’s the consequence of having someone as aggressive as Charlotte for a mother
Helga I believe was influenced partially by Angelica, and partially by Lucy from Peanuts. I’m pretty sure I read that in a Craig Bartlett interview article somewhere. 😊
I was thinking the same thing except Rugrats came before Hey Arnold. I wouldn't be surprised if there is influence, except I find Helga even more depressing because she doesn't really have any other family to lean on (minus her sister). Make me wish we got that spinoff show.
22:00 I do remember turning 13 was seen as a big milestone when I was in middle school in the 90s, even in some of the books I read at the time, 13 was "the cool age."
I sort of remember it was as if becoming 13 was this huge rite of passage and I felt like so many expectations were suddenly thrown on me and I was treated like I should have already known things that really should have been explained to me to prevent some problems such as explain to me what exactly is a credit card and how it worked. I was constantly confused whenever I asked someone older than questions I had that I had wanted to know because I was old enough to comprehend the truth and I was told that I should have already known it.
It's weird Angelica isn't the one doing the bullying in this scenario. Weirder still that despite how much I disliked her in Rugrats, I genuinely felt bad for her in multiple episodes of All Grown Up.
I vaguely remember watching this when I was like 4-6 years old. You just activated a part of my memory that might have laid dormant for the rest of my life thank you. It's crazy looking back nearly 20 years seeing as I am just in my 20s.
I kind of wish Savanna and Angelica became friends. It would have been fun for Angelica to have her own group of "Plastics" that all bug the main kids for different reasons. The different ways in which they could act would make it easier on the writers to build different types of conflicts and open Angelica up for more character development since she could get nicer over time.
I felt bad for Angelica in several episodes of Rugrats, including this one. Not having anyone show up to your birthday or even forgetting about your birthday is one of the most saddest thing in life. However, there is another episode of Rugrats you should cover that focuses on Angelica. How Angelica saved Tommy and the babies from Josh.
As a HUGE Rugrats fan, I have always liked Angelica. Yes, most of the time, she never made the best or nicest decisions. But, there are so many instances throughout both Rugrats and All Grown Up where you realize she really does care for Tommy and Dil and the rest of their friends. Lucky 13 is a great example of this. Angelica is simply insecure and bosses the rest of the group around in a “I’ll be mean to them so they can’t hurt me first.” kind of mentality. I love your take on this episode. It’s definitely one of my favorites. 😊
I preferred the animation & art style of Season 1 Of All Grown Up over the rest of the series. The new style grew on me by the end of the Series, but it felt too different from the original Rugrats at 1st.
A handful of moments from this show are permanently cemented into my mind and the first after "I am Chongo!" is "But I'm 13!" It seemed like such a huge deal back then but I honestly don't remember anything about my 13th birthday
Never thought I'd relate to Angelica. When I was 22, I had a jealous friend who didn't like me as I was funny & good at parties (although hate them now). He invited ALL my friends EXCEPT for my best friend & I to a massive rave at a public woods. It was on my birthday weekend too & they all came (from across the UK) JUST for that event. Didn't want to see me (likely out of shame). My friend & I just got high & played Yu-gi-oh. Karma hit when we found out police called his party off, 30 minutes in, as they didn't have a permit.
Even as a kid I attributed Angelica’s acting out being due to having not having the necessary parental love and attention from the adults in her life. However from the original and spin off as much as Angelica would bully or mess with Tommy and his friends when it came down to it and someone else tried to mess with them or they needed help she was always ready to defend them and be there in their corner.
Angelica is definitely a complicated character She’s a bully and selfish but she also loves her family She’s definitely a morally flawed character and I think that’s why no matter how bad she might be we can feel bad when she’s hurting
Throwing a fake party just so people won't go to someone's else's real party is just plain mean-spirited. Savannah is just awful, basically Angelica with none of her hidden nice qualities.
The hardest thing for a writer to do is make a villain or bully character sympathetic because of the pre established lines and lore about the character then the actor or actress has to give a lot harder effort to remember this is the redemption episode or arch what is really sad looking back at the classic Rugrats and All Grown Up is you start to notice that it is more she feels neglected therefore she bullies because she wants the attention even if negative from elders
All grown up did a good job making Angelica a lot more likeable. I like they still kept her negative traits but made her a bit more nicer. She’s kinda of like what they did to Heather in total drama
Agreed. Heather and Angelica aren't exactly the nicest people in the world but they are at least honest with their feelings and don't act totally fake and friendly only to passive aggressively insult you to your face. They understand some people might not like their behavior or attitude at times and can accept that fact but they also don't go out of their way to hurt others just to be cruel. Heather has humiliated a few of the TD contestants publicly but it was more for pranks and as a way to win challenges and Angelica never actually tried to hurt the babies intentionally and seems to understand that kicking a literal baby is just not acceptable and she never actual puts them in true harms way such as pushing them into the street. And the fact that Suzie is still good friends with Angelica since they were toddlers means that Angelica does have some nicer moments to her. Heather had great character development and at least she isn't like Alejandro or Courtney who act super nice but then will show their true colors and put others in danger just to get ahead in the game.
It really hurts when you invite your class and or friends for a party and nobody shows up. This has happened to all of my party attempts. It hurts more every time.
Angelica reminds me of Helga, in a lot of ways! Both are sympathetic bullies who aren't sadistic humanless bastards and act like actual normal people, unlike most bullies in other cartoons from the 90s and 2000s.

After seeing some episodes from this and discussions about this show, Angelica definitely mellowed out. Part of me thinks her parents disciplined her a bit more but being near the Rugrats softened her. I hoped maybe at some point during the OG show, Charlotte realized that she should be more in her life and guide her better because we see how much Angelica looks up to her but misread how her mother was bossy to others. I cut Drew a little slack because he even realized how spoiled she was in the OG show.
Now that he mentions it I would love to what stuff Savanah would have at her party,I always thought I thought it just some generic party and those kids were going purely out of pier pressure
I love shows like this that put *SO MUCH EMPHASIS* on being popular because nostalgia and hindsight kicks in - it’s adulthood that acts more childish. Also, oh my God that “wishing to be an adult” thing!
I love what Tommy did for Angelica cuz even though him and Angelica buttheads they are still family so I love the fact that Tommy came and showed his support for his cousin❤
Honestly, I was a lot like Angelica, minus the part where she gets a lot of gifts. I was cruel and bossy and could even get physically violent with other children. It was because my home life wasn't good, definitely worse than hers but I found myself relating a lot to the emotional neglect she received.
Remembering what you said about high school nightmares last time, honestly I prefer adulthood since while I do have to deal with a 9-5, or 7-3, job it's still better than high school was for me. Wish I'd had more inspiration to write when I was younger but being an adult mostly feels better.
I actually did a rewatch of all grown up very recently! It was such a fun time overall considering I’ve rewatched the original Rugrats so many times since first loving it as a kid! Part of me kind of liked all grown a little bit more than the original Rugrats. But Dil was easily my favourite character in the version. Such tremendous fun overall!
I remember getting the DVD based off this episode a couple years back (I got it from an Game X Change store in Texas and I still have it to this day), and I can safely say that this episode is one of my favorites!
While Angelica was the main protagonist in Rugrats I kinda liked how they brought her down a peg in middle school (?) in All Grown Up with meaner girls to proves she's not all high and mighty as she once thought! Life Lesson: there's always someone who's gonna be better than you! Although she's still one of my favorites. Also I kinda related with her and Cynthia. I still have a old childhood Arthur doll my grandma gave that I still have in the basement now. (Also off topic: back then I was kinda put off wondering why Tommy's hair was purple NOT knowing how parents genetics works and that his hair is the same colors as his dad's Stew! Also, also it wasn't until recently where I realized that they named Tommy's brother Dill and their last names is pickles. Dill Pickles. His parents KNEW exactly what they were doing! Lol!)
All Grown Up Season 2 Episode 6 “Saving Cynthia” it’s where I also felt bad for Angelica and loved her even more. I was shocked to see Cynthia not there anymore in her room, even just sitting in a top shelf in season 1 of A.G.U like where is she? Then she got rid of it by accident while giving her room a Teen Makeover. It brought so much memories of Rugrats Angelica cuz she was always with Cynthia. We even seen Cynthia through her own episode or two on Rugrats.

The episode "TP +KF" it would be interesting to hear your take about this episode especially since it goes into Chuckie mind on how he feels towards his friendship with Tommy throughout the years. Angelica was the best character on All Grown Up by far ! Love the OG gang, but I always rooted for Angelica on this show because she does learn a lot and is a much nicer person than she was as a 3 year old
Also one episode that i would love to see covered is the greatest SpongeBob episode of all time band geeks as its not only the best SpongeBob episode but the best Squidward episode that actually showed him succeed and also gave us the iconic patrick whale call the white sadan and of course is mayonnaise an instrument

My thing with Angelica is this, she only acts out bc she's not getting the love/attention she needs from her parents. Not excusing her bad behavior, some discipline was needed but guidance was needed too, and she wasn't getting it. Instead, her parents threw gifts and junk food at her as a form of "love". So it makes sense that she's bratty. And i think to a certain level, Tommy knows that and has always known that. Which is why he still has a level of sympathy for her.

Savannah's behavior is how a lot of teenage girls behave when they act as bullies. They pretend to have these bonds of sisterhood and frame their harrassment as helping.

I bet Savannah never had the love and care that Angelica's parents gave her. I bet she was jealous of that because it's likely that her own parents never gave her the love and care she needed. Hence, Savannah resented Angelica for that. I'm getting the idea that she and Kimiko(Kimi) could be sisters, and maybe she's projecting her insecurities on Angelica due to their parents' divorce. While she and Kira went on to find a happy life with Chaz and Chuckie, Savannah likely was ignored by Hiro and Wanda to focus on Kikiyu. This made her feel embittered because of this, as she felt betrayed by her own family.

One of the best portrayals of Angelica doesn’t even come from any of the cartoons that Nickelodeon has airs on TV, but rather in a newspaper comic strip where, rather than berating Chuckie for thinking that he can bring his mom back by stepping on sidewalk cracks, she stops her insult mid-sentence and asks Chuckie if stepping on the cracks are working. Peak Nice Angelica.

Angelica is an interesting character and actually a really good example of writing of a child in her position (in terms of family, upbringing, etc). She’s bratty and at times self-centered, but definitely not heartless when she understands the situation.

I hated Angelica as a kid, but as an adult, I'm like, wait... every adult in her life thinks it's ok to just leave her unsupervised in a room full of babies. Let's set the parentification vibes aside for a minute and think about that: she's several years older, she knows more, she can do more, and she's stuck playing with people who can't possibly relate to her interests. I think I'd lash out and be bratty if I was four and that happened to me nearly every day.
I think the root of Angelica's problems are that she does not feel loved or cared for. Think about it. As a preteen she thinks she is going to be happy and accepted and thats all she wants. But, think about how she grew up. She had a mom who couldn't put her phone down and talk to her own daughter and a father who just give into her and give her, her own way all the time basically so that she wouldn't whine or bother him. She really had absent parents. Daddy could have bought her any toy she wanted but, that wasn't going to buy her what she needed from the start. She needed family that was going to give her attention and care enough to teach her to act right. Mom was absent and dad just gave her toys and things. Neither of them gave her time and that's what a kid needs most.

Are they worth the fact that while you shovel money or spend the night at work, they grow left to their own devices and are not needed by anyone? As a rule, this ends very badly. But if they have relatives on the maternal or paternal side, then they may still be lucky, because in this situation, for the most part, they have a chance that there will be no dire consequences
That's what set cartoons like Rugrats apart. They could've easily left Angelica be the villain with no redeemable qualities or depth. We need more kids' shows that don't insult their audience's intelligence

The saddest part is that it's like the Bowling For Soup song "High School Never Ends" with this type of judging/popularity playing into most social aspects as adults. The only thing that is fictional, however, is having the friends/family who will back you up NO MATTER WHAT. In fact, in most situations, people aren't morally intelligent enough to do it so will let it happen or backstab/contribute. That's the real folly is friends in these shows DON'T really exist.
To add on (if anyone cares), it makes sense. The ONE forced institutionalised thing ALL kids should undergo is school. Unless home schooled (which has it's own issues), you will learn & understand these social structures. As a result, it's not surprising it's like that as adults (as they are just grown up kids). In reality, most people don't change that much from their child selves so ALWAYS see how someone was in school & they are just a scaled up version of that.
@@infjmale91I’d say that’s less of an example of moral intelligence, and more an example of self-preservation based on cost to benifitial. If those friends backing you up would make no good to fix/help a situation, but would probably result in them being bullied anyway, backing their friend up would be a lose-lose situation. It’s extremely screwed up situation, but one of the sad realities of the world.
We grew up with Angelica, too. She was OUR mean cousin, too. So seeing someone be mean to a character that we have spent so much time with, makes us feel bad for her. It's like Tommy said, it's one thing when you bag on someone you know really well, it's another for an outsider to do it.
I do like how All Grown Up softens Angelica. She's still a brat and a bit of a mean girl, but this episode shows she truly loves Tommy and Dill like brothers, and the rest of the group are basically extended family to her. Her upbringing wasn't great due to her parents, but her aunt and uncle were always a safe space for her, and the group has been there for her.
I've never cared for Angelica, but I'll always take someone that's mean to your face than someone who's nice to your face but mean behind your back

I know All Grown Up may not be the most beloved show (even though I enjoy it) but something I think the show did really well was give Angelica more redeeming qualities. She may still talk down to Tommy and the gang and be cruel at times but I feel like she's also matured in a few ways. An example I always remembered was when she befriended a sick child. I like how she was able to at least somewhat grow out of her cruel and evil ways from when she was a toddler.
I completely agree. Growing up watching Rugrats as a kid, I always hoped for more moments where Angelica was kind to the babies and we very rarely got that. In All Grown Up though, they definitely took more time to shine a better light on Angelica. I always appreciated that! :D

In the original show, it was mostly her the babies and the parents until Suzie came along, middle school meant a larger peer group and a more complex social hierarchy for the character to exist in.
I loved both Rugrats and all grown up as a kid too.
You can annoyed by her at most but when shes bullied and hurt you feel for her honesty her brattiness comes from the fact her dad constantly spoils her and her mom being constantly neglectful has led her to develop sever abandonment issues and just being upset with how her parents were personally once she reached her 13 year old self she actually became nice and lovable
Not just that, but as a toddler her example on how to behave was Charlotte.
"Lash out at those who you see as beneath you, and you'll get what you want" is clearly a behavior she learned from watching Charlotte's interactions with assistants and coworkers. Seeing her mistreat them and get what she wants.
So, Angelica is simply emulating her mother, who she sees as a powerful boss lady
And then her dad is the biggest pushover and just lets the neglect and bad examples of parenting continue
Angelica ended up being one of the nicer characters in All Grown Up imo.
Doesn't help that in the original series, Drew often bullied Stu verbally about not having a traditional job and even called him stupid a few times for disagreeing with him and quite loudly too. There is no way Angelica didn't witness this and then do the same to the babies because she is too young to understand that is just something that you shouldn't do. Drew was a pushover when it came to Angelica but he was still a bully to Stu even if it was with words only.
Also the fact I'm the movie he calls atu a loser and then is directly responsible for the babies and his daughter getting out of the house

Weirdly enough, one of my favorite episodes of All Grown Up was actually another Angelica-centered episode. It’s the one where Charlotte gets ousted as CEO of her company, and since she no longer has a job to keep her busy she tries bonding with Angelica. It showed just how difficult it is to reconnect with a kid when all that child knows from you is neglect. I feel like this show and Rugrats got a surprising amount of mileage out of Angelica plots, even though as a character she’s mostly a jerk. It’s cool how they subtly gave depth to someone you weren’t even supposed to like.

I totally felt Angelica on that level, having a absent/neglectful parent trying to reconnect with you late into (like at the tail end of) your childhood.
My dad was in the military, being deployed 3 times and sent to assignments for over a year, and the times he was around/at home with his family, he was more concerned doing *his own thing* than doing *family things*. He constantly pushed for me to do better every time he was around, straining what little relationship we had. When he was finally done with the military, I was graduating high school. He then wanted to be involved and supportive in my life (cause he finally had the free time to) right when I was becoming an adult; but I was so used to never having him around, his efforts didn’t mean much to me anymore (would’ve meant more when I was younger).
Lesson I’ve learned, ‘don’t have kids if you know you can’t be there for them (if you’re too busy with work, too tired, or too self focused)’. Kids from age 3-12 are the most impressionable and will watch you actions; they will definitely feel some sort of neglect if you cannot be there for them during that period. (Your only grace period is from age 1-2, as most infants/toddlers don’t form strong/core memories yet; and by age 13 and up, most teens stop caring about their parents’ attention and want to be more independent with their own friends and lives). Age 3-12 is where you want to form those strong core family memories that will stick with them into adulthood.

@@franciscovilcheavila960 When my dad was around/at home, he was strict towards me growing up as the oldest child, wanting me to be independent and self sufficient, but in the process he was very pushy and didn’t help much when I struggled (thinking struggling was a teaching tool), wanting me to do it on my own. It got to the point where I stopped relying on him (as in asking him for things or help).
The tipping point was when I was graduating, as I asked him to help with paying for my graduation equipment (gown, cap, and plaque), but he told me to pay for it myself. On the day of graduation (after I paid for my stuff weeks prior), he tried to congratulate me by giving me money, but I was so burnt at that point I refused and told him I didn’t need his help.
He was taken aback by my comment/refusal, and though a little defensive, he didn’t push the issue further. Afterwards (weeks later) he started being more approachable, attentive, and supportive of my future, wanting to help with college or help find work. He took the initiative to spent more time with me and was more open with his affections.
Come to find out, my little act of “rebellion” was a wake-up call for him. He had a talk with my mom and his own mother (my grandmother), where they both chastised him for how he treated me in the past, saying that he was going to have a relationship with his daughter like he had with his father (he grew up with a distant father, and at a point hated him; it wasn’t until his adulthood where he came to bury the hatchet and rekindle their relationship). I was already 18 when his realization happened, so I went my whole childhood without a proper father-daughter relationship. That’s why his change didn’t have much of an impact on me, I felt it was too late. The most we could’ve done was have a decent ADULT parent-child relationship going forward.

It got to the point that I stopped relying on him/asking him for help, as I was often told by him to do it on my own.
I ended up paying for my own graduation equipment, so on the day of graduation, my dad thought it was a good idea to present me money as a congratulations. I was so burnt at that point, I refused him. (Context: I asked him for help with graduation prior and he refused to, thinking I should pay for it myself.) He was taken aback by my refusal and dropped the subject.
Weeks later after my graduation, his attitude changed to being more attentive, open, and supportive, wanting to help with my future (either college or finding a job).
Come to find out, my attitude towards him was a wake-up call, as both my mother and grandmother (his mother) chastised him for how he treated me. They both told him that he’ll have a similar relationship with his own daughter like he had with his father (his father/my grandfather was distant with him too and gave him little support; my dad at a point hated him, and it took until his adulthood where he was able to bury the hatchet and rekindle their relationship).
This caused my dad to change his attitude quick, as he was afraid of growing distant with (and being hated by) his own children and being similar to his father.
I was already 18 when he had his realization, so a childhood of a father-daughter relationship was wasted. His change had a minimum impact on me as I felt it was too late, and at best, we could only move forward to having a decent Adult parent-child relationship.
I can’t believe I forgot that Angelica has a cat that eerily resembles her. It even look a bit aged and everything. I applaud them for remembering that minor detail in the sequel series, even if it was just a brief cameo.

My whole thing with Angelica in all grown up is that she actually tried to be a good person in almost every episode that focuses on her (minus the pilot episode) and tends to actually learn lessons in them, so this sort of episode feels even worse for her considering Angelica, no pun intended, grew up a lot by the time of that series and wasn’t the constantly bratty character her younger self was, and was instead much more complex.

Also all grown up made me like angelica especially when it was her and tommy episodes it was honestly surprising to see her actually be their for essentially her baby brother because when you look at angelica and tommys relationship you noticed she treated him and dil as her brothers rather than cousins which was always heartwarming to see especially in rugrats in paris now listen here lady no one messes with my dumb babies but me

In the second movie, Angelica was mostly helping Coco out of fear of being hurt by the woman. Coco was about to hurt the girl and of course she was going to do whatever it took to stay safe. She also knew how Chuckie was about not having a mom and wanted to make him happy and she did overhear how Coco needed a kid to get her promotion. Angelica also noticed that Chuckie didn't like Coco very much and told her that she was never going to be able to be his new mother since she wasn't very nice. After watching Paris for the first time, I noticed that Angelica wasn't trying to be bad but rather acting on a very natural instinct of doing whatever needed to be done in order to protect herself from Coco. Remember Coco's male assistant rolled up his sleeve to get back all of the chocolate Angelica had eaten which implies that he was going to literally shove his hand into her mouth and physically make her sick and she was clearly terrified when Coco picked her up by the collar.
Having no one show up to your party is such an awful feeling. Main reason why I'm afraid to have bday parties as an adult 😢

All Grown Up being the place to give Angelica more redeeming qualities makes a lot of sense narratively. She's quite literally grown up. Even as an emotional (pre)teen who still has a rocky relationship with the younger mains, she's still more mature than she was as a toddler, it's a lot easier for her to understand the dynamics she has with them and others, it makes it a lot easier for her to be a relatable and enjoyable character.
i wonder if most peaople go thugh "rotton" phase, most its teenage years but some its pre-pre-pre teen years, the worst is when its adult years where they are screw over and sew happy.
It's understandable that Angelica was a brat as a toddler because she was still a very young child just starting to fully understand how the world around her works. She clearly is imitating her parents and how they interact with others. Charlotte is very bossy and Angelica sees how her mother talks to Jonathan over the phone barking orders at him all the time while Drew verbally bullies Stu often and has told him that he was a 'bad' father and husband for not having a traditional job. He's even called Stu stupid for not wanting to work in an office.
@@NightmareRex6 There's a phase commonly called the terrible twos, its the age range when the sense of self really starts to develop and with that selfishness is common. It takes time to develop empathy for others after that. So given her age, being a brat isn't totally unexpected though definitely way beyond most kids.

She was actually made as a foil to Angelica in the short run series Preschool Daze where their ‘feud’ began. Back then Angelica still attempted to be her friend recognizing they shared a similair take on things but Savanah always felt as though she was above Angelica because she thought her family was better she had better connections etc (I can’t recall she name dropped her sibling being important somehow) but it was interesting to watch and realize that this meant the two had been playing this mean girls game from preschool all the way to highschool and neither had changed. Some girls are meant to be low key frienemies for life I suppose.
I always felt bad for Angelica. She was neglected and was bad to get attention. She is the reason I always spend time and attention to my son.
I can't stand Savannah. Angelica's mean, but she's genuine. She keeps it real. Savannah's a cold strategic monster. Being sneaky makes her way more dangerous than Angelica.

Angelica may not have been the perfect angel as a three year old but she did understand whenever the babies really wanted something and did genuinely seem interested in helping them if she could. In the second movie, she did help Coco but I like to think of that as Angelica only doing it to try to keep herself safe subconsciously because the woman was threatening to hurt her and she knew that Chuckie wanted a new mother and overheard Coco saying that she needed to have a kid to get the promotion. Angelica just didn't know how far Coco would take things and was aware that Chuckie didn't like Coco and tried to tell her that the woman wasn't going to be a good mom to him and she did seem concerned about Chuckie's happiness being at stake.
Yep - what makes worse it’s not just a show. Girl/Woman world is still like this today. I don’t care how many things they try to make politically correct, somethings really never change. New faces, but it’s the same old game.

I understand Angelica because when I turned 16 no one showed up except family and a few ppl. I was very depressed
I’ve learned since elementary school to never throw a big party. All the big parties I had I didn’t really have any fun cause I wasn’t really friends with all the kids; they were just classmates and kids of my parents’ friends.
In junior high onward, I realized having a small party with a select group of friends was much better.
That’s how I spent my sweet sixteen, inviting a few friends to go on a overnight trip to an amusement park and hotel suite.
This happened to me as a kid and it happened to me this year. My girlfriend threw me a party and only three people besides her and my family showed up. This experience helped me contextualize my past experiences. It very embarrassing to not have people show up. There are people who don’t have anyone show up for them. Thankfully instead of humiliated I had a really good time with the small group of people.
In retrospect people did show up for us. I’m very grateful for the few people who would show up for my birthday. I always make sure to show up for those people in return. Maybe it wasn’t everyone but it was the important people that did.
Honestly experiences like this have that one could benefit of showing you who is actually important.

I think the thing that always made me feel a little bad for Angelica in Rugrats was just that she was a 3-4 year old who seemed to not get much attention from her parents. That's messed up for a toddler. I'm not saying it excuses her actions at all, but as an adult I just want to make sure little Angelica feels like someone cares about her 😭
I always liked Angelica, she was always one of my favorites. Her facade was so easy to see through, even more so as an adult. In retrospect, I think she suffers from a lot of childhood neglect, and one parent unknowingly putting a lot of pressure on her, and the other just ignored her completely and let her do whatever.
If I could armchair psychologist for a moment: Angelica's situation feels like Golden Child syndrome, especially with the pressure Charlotte starts to put on her as a teen, probably the reasoning of Angelica being both an only child and a girl. Imagine its your 13th birthday-what feels like a huge milestone for a lot of pre-teens, and everyone you know ditches, and instead of your parents comforting you, you see your mom crying about frivolous things like canceled catering, bookings, and social status. Your own mom is acting like the child, and offers no comfort during this whole ordeal that is clearly _very_ important to Angelica. And on top of just having a lonely birthday, the reason for it would be totally avoidable if not for someone deliberately sabotaging it and rubbing it in her face the entire time. That's horrible! The poor girl is still a child! And god knows where her dead-beat father is the whole time either.
Her picking on her little cousins (let's be honest, all the other parents hang out with and see each other _so_ often they might as well all be family.) reads as older sibling teasing more than anything malicious. That's not to say its not mean or a good thing, but she was literally four years old with a father than encouraged and praised her for any of her behaviors. Honestly, her picking on others could totally stem from a child thats frustrated and doesn't know/isn't given the means to communicate it healthily, or even darker taking what she learns from her parents out on others. (aka Drew's dribbled absentee nonsense, and Charlotte's 'take no shit' that can easily translate to perfectionism, demeaning behavior, unhealthy competitiveness, and a low self-esteem under all of it. And all from a very, _very_ young age.)
Angelica I feel is just a very complicated character with many flaws, but also almost a tragic figure because you can see exactly why she's like that. She's a young girl with high expectations with herself and obsesses over being popular/being liked, but in times of conflict usually manages to be loyal to her family/friends, even if it takes her time to get there.
Also, it's potentially worth noting because I see it often enough: Golden Child syndrome does NOT equate a spoiled child growing up with loving overly-praising parents and a silver spoon in their mouth. It is a form of child abuse. (I experienced it myself, and have always been met with 'must've been nice' type rhetoric, despite being poor and having an abuser for a parent.)
Golden Child Syndrome can start simple, 'my child is the cutest' 'my child is so talented', but comes from a competitive streak from the parent, that with age that child is given unrealistic to impossible standards, to be ✨ p e r f e c t ✨, and once the child begins to crack under the pressure, differ from their parents, fail a test/s, put on weight, be too tall/short, to start to contort against the mold they were placed in since birth-once that pedestal begins to crumble and you start to make mistakes-you become a disappointment.
Kids with parents like this will constantly strive to bring back their parents attention-that praise. They can push themselves so hard they jeopardize their health, mental and physical, and the demands are so high and ever-changing that the child will eventually grow to be riddled with self-esteem issues and rarely see anything they do as 'good enough.' If they fail to fit the perfect cookie-cutter shape their parent (which is impossible) you feel like _nothing._
You can see this a lot with dance moms, or beauty pageant moms-the 'oooh look at my child aren't they perfect' but when they don't live up to that never-ending standard, when you are not perfect and exceptional, good at and _better_ than everyone else at _everything,_ you are treated like a failure.
Which is to say I think this is what I believe Angelica is dealing with. Surprisingly I would argue it comes more from her dad, who does nothing but sing her praises non-stop in front of others, even when displaying negative behavior. Whereas at least her mom genuinely seems to think those things of her daughter and tries to encourage her to be strong and independent, probably due to the fact of how hard it would've been for Charlotte in the workplace at the time (that being a woman at a business career in the 90s).

Growing up, I didn't watch Rugrats as much as other kids did. However, I was familiar with the character of Angelica. She was often portrayed as a spoiled brat and many people didn't like her. But now, as an adult, I see her in a different light. Angelica was just a young child, and it's not entirely her fault that she acted the way she did. Her parents never gave her the attention and love she needed. Instead, they showered her with material possessions and junk food, without any discipline. Looking back, I realize that parents are supposed to have some level of discipline towards their children. I feel sorry for Angelica, especially when I remember the episode where no one showed up to her birthday party. It's a heartbreaking reminder of how neglected and lonely she must have felt.
One more important aspect that I would like to mention is that as I am studying Child Care Development in Community College, I have recently rewatched the show Rugrats and realized that Angelica, the antagonist, was only 3 years old. She was just a young child who didn't know any better. It is her parents who should be held responsible for her behavior. The way a child is brought up and treated by their parents greatly influences their actions. If the parents are neglectful and give in to their child's every demand without any hesitation, it reflects poor parenting. Angelica's parents need to attend parenting classes to learn how to properly raise a child. It is not Angelica's fault that she is misguided, but rather the result of her parents' parenting style.
Angelica was honestly always a crazy case… spoiled brat with a controlling mother like that, as an adult it’s easy to see how she got so entitled and ultimately messed up.
But yeah. She’s still a person, and a young one at that.
Angelica’s tragedy is purely the fact that she’s going to have to go through hell learning that the world doesn’t revolve around her. She’s been set up to be that one person that’s just hard to be around, and she’s already screwed up her relationships with close family.
She’s so blessed to have family like Tommy who have such a heart of gold to care like that, and ultimately people that- for better or worse- are the closest thing to real friends she likely will ever have, given they know the real her and not the face she puts on for others ((shown in other episodes)).
Genuinely… I feel bad for her at the end of it all.

Growing up I typically related to characters like Angelica and Courtney from As Told By Ginger. I'm happy that these characters' flaws are underlined, but that they're also humanized by their respective writers.
What I really like Rugrats and the way they show Angelica is that she isn’t evil- she’s a kid. A kid who is being negatively affected by her parents. While her actions are her own, it is made VERY obvious that her parents’ actions are affecting her. In the original show it was by them spoiling her to make up for not making enough time for her. When you are used to everything being done YOUR way, of course you’re going to be mean or “bossy” when you are in an environment that doesn’t give you that control. That’s how you think the world works. In All Grown Up, not only is her whole “I want to be part of the cool kids” totally natural, but it’s also in part due to her parents- especially her mother. Not only are her parents still spoiling her, but her mom is very concerned about appearances- valuing material wealth and beauty above most other things. This is rubbing off on Angelica who feels that to “looking” cool, rich and stylish are the most important things. While I can’t think of an episode that explicitly shows this, Charlotte is an accomplished business woman who knows the importance of networking with the “right” crowd. It wouldn’t be surprising if she was consciously or unconsciously making Angelica feel she needs to do the same thing.
Charlotte using "You never know where a [redacted] might end up" to convince Angelica to invite them kind of shows how even concepts like "family is family" can be processed through the networking lens for her, so I think you're onto something. Business is her life, and that businesslike mindset is becoming somewhat of a fundamental value in that branch of the Pickles family.
I think Angelica's parents do try, but they prioritize career so highly they lost sight of how to really be good parents. By making more money, they can keep throwing money onto their daughter and tell themselves they're doing okay.
A three to four year old is definitely not evil. They may do bad things but you need to look past the morality factor and view the situation from the perspective that they are still young and growing and don't know any better. Just because they bluntly call someone "fat" does not mean that they are rude and understand what they've just said. You need to tell them when they've done wrong and why it's bad. Drew and Charlotte were also the worst role models for their daughter. She witnessed Charlotte being extremely bossy towards Jonathan and Drew frequently bullied Stu verbally and it was often loud as well. Of course Angelica is going to try to imitate her parents and think it is normal. All kids imitate the adult around them and not have any true understanding of why the adults do things like cooking and cleaning.
To me Savannah and her small group don't really seem popular they just seem more so cliquey elitist,snobbish and narcissistic then anything else.Even if you are a narcissist and you simply see yourself and your small posse of friends as being the elites and as people who other people are not fit to associate with thats definitely not synonymous with being popular.
There was also a 4 episode spin-off of Rugrats called preschool daze about Angelica and Suzie. I'm not sure when the show came out but Savanna and Angelica hated each other since preschool, because they wanted to be the best preschooler.

22:00 I do remember turning 13 was seen as a big milestone when I was in middle school in the 90s, even in some of the books I read at the time, 13 was "the cool age."
I remember "the big kids" always being considered the cool age group when I was in a K-6 school.
I sort of remember it was as if becoming 13 was this huge rite of passage and I felt like so many expectations were suddenly thrown on me and I was treated like I should have already known things that really should have been explained to me to prevent some problems such as explain to me what exactly is a credit card and how it worked. I was constantly confused whenever I asked someone older than questions I had that I had wanted to know because I was old enough to comprehend the truth and I was told that I should have already known it.
It's weird Angelica isn't the one doing the bullying in this scenario. Weirder still that despite how much I disliked her in Rugrats, I genuinely felt bad for her in multiple episodes of All Grown Up.
I vaguely remember watching this when I was like 4-6 years old. You just activated a part of my memory that might have laid dormant for the rest of my life thank you. It's crazy looking back nearly 20 years seeing as I am just in my 20s.
I kind of wish Savanna and Angelica became friends. It would have been fun for Angelica to have her own group of "Plastics" that all bug the main kids for different reasons. The different ways in which they could act would make it easier on the writers to build different types of conflicts and open Angelica up for more character development since she could get nicer over time.

As a HUGE Rugrats fan, I have always liked Angelica. Yes, most of the time, she never made the best or nicest decisions. But, there are so many instances throughout both Rugrats and All Grown Up where you realize she really does care for Tommy and Dil and the rest of their friends. Lucky 13 is a great example of this. Angelica is simply insecure and bosses the rest of the group around in a “I’ll be mean to them so they can’t hurt me first.” kind of mentality. I love your take on this episode. It’s definitely one of my favorites. 😊

I preferred the animation & art style of Season 1 Of All Grown Up over the rest of the series. The new style grew on me by the end of the Series, but it felt too different from the original Rugrats at 1st.
A handful of moments from this show are permanently cemented into my mind and the first after "I am Chongo!" is "But I'm 13!" It seemed like such a huge deal back then but I honestly don't remember anything about my 13th birthday

Never thought I'd relate to Angelica. When I was 22, I had a jealous friend who didn't like me as I was funny & good at parties (although hate them now). He invited ALL my friends EXCEPT for my best friend & I to a massive rave at a public woods. It was on my birthday weekend too & they all came (from across the UK) JUST for that event. I will always Stan Angelica pickles. She was secretly good person, funny, and an anti-hero
Even as a kid I attributed Angelica’s acting out being due to having not having the necessary parental love and attention from the adults in her life. However from the original and spin off as much as Angelica would bully or mess with Tommy and his friends when it came down to it and someone else tried to mess with them or they needed help she was always ready to defend them and be there in their corner.
Angelica is definitely a complicated character
She’s a bully and selfish but she also loves her family
She’s definitely a morally flawed character and I think that’s why no matter how bad she might be we can feel bad when she’s hurting
Middle school/the tween years were like that, though. And girls? Were vicious.
Throwing a fake party just so people won't go to someone's else's real party is just plain mean-spirited. Savannah is just awful, basically Angelica with none of her hidden nice qualities.
The hardest thing for a writer to do is make a villain or bully character sympathetic because of the pre established lines and lore about the character then the actor or actress has to give a lot harder effort to remember this is the redemption episode or arch what is really sad looking back at the classic Rugrats and All Grown Up is you start to notice that it is more she feels neglected therefore she bullies because she wants the attention even if negative from elders
I always saw Angelica as an “older sister” type of figure, like I can bully my siblings but no one else can!!
All grown up did a good job making Angelica a lot more likeable. I like they still kept her negative traits but made her a bit more nicer. She’s kinda of like what they did to Heather in total drama
Agreed. Heather and Angelica aren't exactly the nicest people in the world but they are at least honest with their feelings and don't act totally fake and friendly only to passive aggressively insult you to your face. They understand some people might not like their behavior or attitude at times and can accept that fact but they also don't go out of their way to hurt others just to be cruel. Heather has humiliated a few of the TD contestants publicly but it was more for pranks and as a way to win challenges and Angelica never actually tried to hurt the babies intentionally and seems to understand that kicking a literal baby is just not acceptable and she never actual puts them in true harms way such as pushing them into the street. And the fact that Suzie is still good friends with Angelica since they were toddlers means that Angelica does have some nicer moments to her. Heather had great character development and at least she isn't like Alejandro or Courtney who act super nice but then will show their true colors and put others in danger just to get ahead in the game.
It really hurts when you invite your class and or friends for a party and nobody shows up. This has happened to all of my party attempts. It hurts more every time.

Angelica reminds me of Helga, in a lot of ways! Both are sympathetic bullies who aren't sadistic humanless bastards and act like actual normal people, unlike most bullies in other cartoons from the 90s and 2000s.

After seeing some episodes from this and discussions about this show, Angelica definitely mellowed out. Part of me thinks her parents disciplined her a bit more but being near the Rugrats softened her. I hoped maybe at some point during the OG show, Charlotte realized that she should be more in her life and guide her better because we see how much Angelica looks up to her but misread how her mother was bossy to others. I cut Drew a little slack because he even realized how spoiled she was in the OG show.
You know this was the one time I felt bad for her, no one deserves to be bullied like that
Now that he mentions it I would love to what stuff Savanah would have at her party,I always thought I thought it just some generic party and those kids were going purely out of pier pressure
I love shows like this that put *SO MUCH EMPHASIS* on being popular because nostalgia and hindsight kicks in - it’s adulthood that acts more childish.

I love what Tommy did for Angelica cuz even though him and Angelica buttheads they are still family so I love the fact that Tommy came and showed his support for his cousin❤
Honestly, I was a lot like Angelica, minus the part where she gets a lot of gifts. I was cruel and bossy and could even get physically violent with other children. It was because my home life wasn't good, definitely worse than hers but I found myself relating a lot to the emotional neglect she received.
Remembering what you said about high school nightmares last time, honestly I prefer adulthood since while I do have to deal with a 9-5, or 7-3, job it's still better than high school was for me. Wish I'd had more inspiration to write when I was younger but being an adult mostly feels better.
Charlotte in All Grown-Up reminds me of the future version of Francine Smith seen in the episode the longest-distance relationship from American Dad!
I actually did a rewatch of all grown up very recently! It was such a fun time overall considering I’ve rewatched the original Rugrats so many times since first loving it as a kid! Part of me kind of liked all grown a little bit more than the original Rugrats. But Dil was easily my favourite character in the version. Such tremendous fun overall!
I still cringe at the few month span I was a bully to a kid. I felt awful after and apologized months later
I remember getting the DVD based off this episode a couple years back (I got it from an Game X Change store in Texas and I still have it to this day), and I can safely say that this episode is one of my favorites!
While Angelica was the main protagonist in Rugrats I kinda liked how they brought her down a peg in middle school (?) in All Grown Up with meaner girls to proves she's not all high and mighty as she once thought!

Although she's still one of my favorites. Also I kinda related with her and Cynthia. I still have a old childhood Arthur doll my grandma gave that I still have in the basement now.
(Also off topic: back then I was kinda put off wondering why Tommy's hair was purple NOT knowing how parents genetics works and that his hair is the same colors as his dad's Stew! Also, also it wasn't until recently where I realized that they named Tommy's brother Dill and their last names is pickles. Dill Pickles. His parents KNEW exactly what they were doing! Lol!)
All Grown Up Season 2 Episode 6 “Saving Cynthia” it’s where I also felt bad for Angelica and loved her even more. I was shocked to see Cynthia not there anymore in her room, even just sitting in a top shelf in season 1 of A.G.U like where is she? Then she got rid of it by accident while giving her room a Teen Makeover. It brought so much memories of Rugrats Angelica cuz she was always with Cynthia. We even seen Cynthia through her own episode or two on Rugrats.

The episode "TP +KF" it would be interesting to hear your take about this episode especially since it goes into Chuckie mind on how he feels towards his friendship with Tommy throughout the years. Angelica was the best character on All Grown Up by far ! Love the OG gang, but I always rooted for Angelica on this show because she does learn a lot and is a much nicer person than she was as a 3 year old
I remember when this episode was announced, as this big special for Angelica; but I didn't care to see, because she wasn't my favorite character

I’ve honestly always liked Angelica I am a bit spoiled myself as I was the only girl in my whole family. So I did feel bad for her. I admire Tommy for sticking my family. I think you are wrong about adults and money many of them still go for shiny things
All Grown Up is such an underrated show it's just fun wish it had a proper ending though.
