I saw Harry James play on the Tomorrowland Stage at Disneyland around 1974. It was a free show. I think he played there every weekend. It was the first time I ever saw anyone from the Big Band era and I loved it.
This piece was a reinterpretation of the standard "One O'clock Jump" by Count Basie, released two years earlier. With the addition of the brass triplet choruses in the piece, the mastery of the musicians of the formation is realized. From their beginnings in the 30s in bands as important as those of the "Fathers of Swing" Ben Pollack or Benny Goodman, he was active until practically his death in Las Vegas in 1983, even when the so-called "Big Band Era", of which he was a outstanding exponent, had been left behind decades ago.
After listening to Willie Smith's solos on "Two O' Clock Jump for 55 years. I finally got to see him play one! Harry James and His Orchestra at their best!
This was so cool. Just the fact that the whole triplet mad passage from about 1:22 to 1:55 didn't become a big train wreck is testament to how good these guys were.
5-5-2024. Harry James a great mainstay from the Swing Era! How could anyone not like this jumpin' and cool music from a great period of time? Keep swingin' up there Harry.......
There's still jazz but you gotta look for it. I made two jazz songs on SoundCloud and there's a lot of independent artists like myself and clarinetist Adrian Cox and others. Jazz is just not a big thing anymore. It's mostly rap now.

I know.
It made me nervous, not so much the triplets but the counterpoint thing, if you could call it that.
Wave of sound comes to mind.
Second time hearing, liked it better, throw the chart on the floor.
Everybody knows who's next.
Not worried for a second about these pros.
"Rounds"
In chorus and threatre, as referred to.
My brain went incommunicado momentarily until it was off the tip of my tongue, finally.

Undeniably one of the greatest trumpet players that ever lived!
Great stuff, I can picture Mom and Dad dancing to this type of music in the 40's. We lost a lot over the years.
Thanks For Sharing This ❤🎉❤🎉❤
Harry James made 9 appearances on the Sullivan show.
I love playing trumpet 😊
I tried my granddaughters trumpet, so hard to play!
I had to listen twice to capture this awesome essence.

High Class Swingin' Perfection👌
I love the way the trumpets start that slur thing on the first 16th after down beat 1 of the semi-legato sax passages, and before the tenor sax solo.
Amazing! 🎺🥁🎶👍
Amazing!
Another great one by Harry James!
Harry James is The Greatest
Try watching jazz on TV today. Ain't no jazz on TV today. Ain't no jazz. And that's sad.
