  • Suddenly it's just you or two in your home and you are ready to stretch your wings and delight in this 'third stage' BUT there is all this 'stuff' wherever you look. I've done it before and I'm doing it again with a new sense of freedom so come along and cheer me on as I aim for a simple 'cosy uncluttered' home.

Cozy uncluttered! I love that. That’s the new me also. I’m actually buying new decorations/furniture I like and getting rid of other things. I want to make my home cozy and memorable for my grandkids that they associate with grandma’s house as they get older. Things I will keep. Not so much disposable decor that I tended towards. Great to see you again!

Dierdre-I suspect that your life, like most of ours, has changed in profound ways over the past several years. I want to say that your video's have been a foundational part of my life since I have long desired to get rid of all the clutter that bogs me down. Little did I know that foundation would be tested with the loss of our home to fire. A very efficient way to declutter! There was a bright side however. Most importantly, no one was hurt (sadly two of my daughters plants and one of my geraniums did not make it) Now that we are in "just the two of us" stage our old home was too big and old, requiring a lot of cleaning and maintenance and energy. As hard as the fire was it gave me the opportunity to create a smaller, efficient home that I designed to meet our specific needs and interests. We were able to salvage a lot of things that are important to us so our new home feels familiar and comfortable without the burden of way too much stuff. I don't know if you check these messages or if your season of life has room for making more videos so wanted to be sure to say thank you and know that you have made a positive impact on me (and so many others!) in this brave new world. Blessings.

SO glad to see you again! I’m coming to terms with the fact that I may never be the grandmother who lovingly hand-sewed heirloom baby clothes. (Heck, I may never even be a grandmother at this rate.) I’m slowly giving away the books, patterns, and fabric. It’s hard, when you’ve spent half a lifetime thinking one thing, but reality tells you differently.

Deirdre, your wise thoughts are truly blowing my mind! I love the idea of being pulled towards the future. I am an empty nester, too, but my nest is far from empty. It's full of stuff! All the stuff that got put on the back burner while I was taking care of my children, my parents, my husband, and even my grandchildren. Now I'm in the final laps of the race and it is time to come to terms that many of the items will never be put to use. It will feel really good to pare down to what I actually, realistically will put to use. The rest can go to other people instead of collecting dust. If I do get rid of anything that is sentimental I will take a photo of it. Thank you, Deirdre!

I love your perspective on how having something your’e passionate about pulls you forward into your future instead of your past pulling you back. I think that’s where my husband and I differ. He has a hard timing letting things go as he is clinging on to the past whereas I am wanting to declutter, make life easier for the both of us and have a positive outlook to how we can enjoy our future and our retirement. I’ve also been suffering with an autoimmune disease for 43 years and have chronic pain. It has affected my mental health. The clutter and abundance of possessions give me anxiety on a daily basis.

We just sold our beautiful old house and are moving into a small flat! A lot to declutter jet when I’ll be in our new home. But then there will be more time and less space so it will hopefully be easier to let things go. Your thoughts are helpful as always 🌷Thank you

Can't believe this was posted for 18 hrs before I saw it! Clearly I was not near my computer over the last day or so. so happy to see you, hope you are doing well. I am also entering another round of sorting.....I'm calling it refining. After our home burned last year we had no choice but to throw out so much stuff damaged by the fire. Now, one year later our home will be completed this month and I have determined that everything that comes into our new home will have to earn its place. As you discovered when you moved from your large home, some pieces simply won't fit and in this new season some pieces don't fit the way we will be living as we go forward. I say good on us for being able to recognize what season we're in and being willing to pare down to what that season needs. So happy to see you. **Mid-video addition- I so connect with your idea of giving myself an amount of space (your box) to keep categories of keepsakes. It forces me to make some of the hard decisions about what to keep if I need to limit it to a specific space.

when I was first diagnosed with a pseudo tumor in my left eye I was devastated I was losing site in my eye . However with medication over the 7 years it brought the swelling down, sight is good, but the medication causes kidneys stones just went through my second surgery . So have to switch medications, but it is so costly $460.00 for a month supply,so I called in Canada I only have to pay $150.00 for a 3 month supply I am so very very happy. Why here in the states it is so costly & it is a very old medication has been around for a very long time, but works well for my condition. I use to worry sick about my eye,but now I go about my life & enjoy my world around me the beautiful things I see instead of thinking what IF I lose my sight one day I enjoy the now. I am blessed this medication keeps the swelling down I get MRI's every year & pictures every 3 months . I have a wonderful neurologist .I have a basement that I need to get at again, I did before ,but I know I want to get rid of more we have a big community yard sale coming up June 10th . You are always encouraging to me .Have a lovely day

It always makes me smile when I see a notification from you Deirdre. I love to listen to your wisdom. I am so glad that the Dr.s prediction was incorrect, but can imagine the absolute turmoil that it created getting that news. Every day is a blessing and one day we will all realise that, and value what we actually spend our time doing. Your channel has been very beneficial to me in helping me work out what my priorities are, and thereby assisting me to realise that I have spent way too many years looking after things that don’t matter. Thank you for sharing a piece of yourself. It really does help others.

Hello Deirdre! So good to see you again. Thank you so much for this. The timing couldn't have been more perfect. I sat down with my journal yesterday and tried to write down what I was thinking.Thinking about decluttering, empty-nesting , and where to go from here. I couldn't quite put it into words but you have expressed and defined it perfectly. It is exactly what I am feeling and wanting right now. Now I can write these things down in my journal and refer to them when I feel like I need to be inspired again or just need some mental clarity on this subject. Thank you!

So lovely to see you, Deirdre. I love you and your channel so much. I'm very much on board with my third stage and continue to let go of "stuff". It frees my mind when I see only those things have true meaning for me now. I have packed away special things for my daughter when the time comes and feel fine about knowing they are still there. Thank you for your inspiring content, gentle heart and appreciation for living in the present. Blessings from California XXX

So inspired that you have taken the time to post another enlightening video. I would have never thought of my life in 3 stages, but you are right! Been in the 3rd stage for quite some time, but sure need your wisdom to help me through. 12 years ago, when I retired, I vowed to declutter, but 12 years later still not getting anywhere. So believe me, you get my mind going that I have to keep at it, bit by bit. Very happy your health is holding your own! ❤

Good to see you Deirdre! I seem to be in the same/similar stage of life as you. My relationship with things has and continues to change. I’ve been a bit surprised at some of the things that I just don’t need/want to keep anymore! Keeping some things from my past, of course, but quite reduced. It’s seems a bit unintuitive to look forward at my age, but it makes sense to me now. I want to LIVE, not just dwell in the past.

Nice to see you back and to hear you are doing well. When I got down to just things I loved I bought plastic sweater boxes and packed some things away and have them on a closet shelf. It is very fun for me to rotate my collectibles seasonally and in fact helps me get my cleaning done. That bunny you showed would go with my Easter stuff.

I like the word downsizing vs declutter although I’m having a hard time actually DOING it at this time. I too feel weighed down by having too much stuff. Having trouble with the sorting and deciding what to keep phase. Any tips for motivation?
