  • This video provides details of how to rebuild a parking brake drum assembly on a C3 Corvette. The brake is being rebuilt because one of the retaining springs broke and caused the drum to rub the rotor during normal operation (hot and smelly, fire and brimstone).
    One of the videos referenced in this rebuild is how to remove the factory original rotors (riveted) - • The Shop - C3 Corvette...

      The only thing I can think of is that the top of the shoes did not correctly engage with top tangs. See video starting 8:50.

    Another excellent video!
    I'm absolutely amazed that the technology for e brakes hasn't advanced one bit since back then.
    It's the same damn setup with the star adjuster n'everything on a mid 2000's mercedes as it is on your beast.
    Don't worry about what the guy said about the "um's".
    Usually that drives me nuts, but I didn't notice because the content was so good. As long as the videos stay this good, I wouldn't worry too much about ums, ahs etc.

    I would lube both ends of the star wheel. They both need to turn and not get stuck. I would also punch the old drilled rivets out of the hub so the disc doesn't hang up on one of them.

    How do you install a new stainless steel rear brake actuator 2 piece lever ? Do you have to remove the C-clip at the hinge pin to install lever then try to put the C-clip back on. Don't really want to remove hub spindle to install this. Any help here.

      Paul, I've never had to get that deep into the rear brakes. So I can't speak from experience on this.

    So do you have the brake handle up 4-5 clicks before you adjust your star adjuster?

    • @MikeHammill-TheShop
      @MikeHammill-TheShop  2 роки тому

      Raise the emergency brake handle up 4 to 5 clicks. Then spin the star adjuster until the shoes touch the drum. Then back off the star adjuster.

      Good question. The rivets on my car weren't going to come out. I tried several times with a drift and hammer. I yours are loose, then remove them.

      @@MikeHammill-TheShop yes, it is Sid speaking (!) I removed all rivets but even after taking the heads off they were hard to push out. I needed a powerful pneumatic hammer. On the rear it is more difficult because of the drum brake, one has to rotate the hub so that the rivet does not shoot into the brake!

    I don't understand the reason to index the lug bolts and holes???

    • @MikeHammill-TheShop
      @MikeHammill-TheShop  2 роки тому

      Both the hub and the rotor have runout as a part of manufacturing tolerances. At the factory the rotors are machined on the hub, to eliminate (minimize) the run out. If the rotor is not indexed to the hub, it could result in increased runout. See my video on how to address this with a new rotor on an existing hub --> ua-cam.com/video/xy02MmosLgo/v-deo.html

    • @MikeHammill-TheShop

      And for why do you do this, to minimize brake pulsation.

    Did you turn the star wheel up or down to spread the shoes?

    • @MikeHammill-TheShop
      @MikeHammill-TheShop  5 років тому

      To spread the pads, push the bottom of the star adjuster towards the center of the car. Facing from the back of the car towards the front (like you are driving the car) you would be spinning the adjuster counterclockwise.

      Ok, thanks. I just bought a 73. I can pull all the way up on the parking brake handle and it doesn’t tighten up at all. The cable bolt is tightened all the way.
      So I was thinking the star adjuster might be stuck, or the shoes are really worn.

      @@axelhammer1611 You can tighten the parking brake handle. I've got a video on that too. Just be careful not to over tighten it, you can break springs in the parking braken... been there, done that. It's also possible that a previous owner removed the brake shoes.
