When I was studying Clarinet at U of T with Mr. Galper, he set it up for Mr. Shiffrin to come in and give us a masterclass, it was awesome!! There was one thing from that I noticed him do, which I did for years after LOL:) I don't recognize the brand of Clarinet he is using, or I guess another way to say it isn't a Buffet, but sounds really good - he was all about sound production when I met him, in the Mid to early 90's!
A very different interpretation from other performances I have heard. He slows the tempo considerably during the contemplative sections. I love both his upper and lower registers. His accompanist plays with great clarity and sensitivity. A remarkable joint effort.
This piece is VERY DIFFICULT. As a clarinet player myself, this piece is above and beyond. Richard Stozlman legimately refuses to play this piece live because of its difficulty. So much love and admiration to David Shifrin for not only having the balls to play this, but to do an admirable job at it!
Great playing, and I appreciate it that he doesn't move around a lot while playing. A little is ok, but woodwind players who wave their instruments around all over the place drive me nuts. Of course I don't have to watch.
I got the opportunity to see them live this Saturday and Shiffring stole the show for me. It was magical
Bravo, very nice tempi!

He plays Backun clarinets now.

Dumbass
dang, shifrin is moving around like Stoltzman....at his age
the best sound on the recording of this rhapsody than any other other performances I have listened to.
