Annie Haslam is universally recognized as having one of the most beautiful voices of all time. Check out her singing on the iconic double LP c. 1978 Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall especially Ashes Are Burning and the excerpt from the Song of Scheherazade.
Renaissance is awesome, and one of my favorites along with Yes, which drew me to your channel. You're awesome! If you like Renaissance, I'd love to see you react to more.
Awesome that you reacted to Renaissance. Ashes are Burning is one of their best. The studio version is just over 11 minutes. The live performance at Carnegie Hall on UA-cam is 23 minutes, but there's no video. It's just audio. The studio version is great. The live version is unreal.
You took the words right out of my mouth. Add Mother Russia, Can You Understand and of course Scheherazade. Second thought. just do the entire Live From Carnegie Hall album!!!!
Annie is a professional, operatically trained vocalist, who has perfect pitch and never misses a note. I saw then many times, since the 1970's in the Philly area. With a lead bass and piano, rhythm acoustic guitar, jazz drummer and a vocalist with a 5 octave range. There is no one like them.
Oh wow... Cynthia, you bring back long forgotten memories. How long haven't I been listening to this band ? And I really loved to listen to it again after so many years... BUT (!) You look so unbeĺievably beautiful... your hair, your make-up, the white top you're wearing... simply breathtaking. :-) Here is to your next one ! Hugs and kisses : Gerry
So lovely to see a new reaction Cynthia! Yes please more Renaissance, I haven’t heard them much, but I know they’re well regarded. I’ll have fun listening along with more nice 🎶 recommendations from the 9K !
One of the early commentors mentioned Blackmore's Night, who covered Ocean Gypsy in more recent years. They're awesome too! The first song on the video A Knight in York ("Locked within the Crystal Ball") gives me chills!

Hi Cynthia, if you enjoy progressive rock bands like Genesis or Yes, you also probably will love listen to Camel. Camel is a very appreciated band by prog fans, they have beautiful music. I suggest you to listen to Lady Fantasy by Camel, one of their most iconic songs!
The whole Mirage album of Camel is so awesome and Brilliant. One of my all time favorite albums of one of my all time favorite bands. They were just as good as any prog band and better than most, especially the original classic lineup. I highly recommend Mirage and Snow Goose and also Moonmadness.
This song was on Scheherazade and Other Stories, the album that first got me addicted to Renaissance. You should check out the rest of the album, two other songs. A Trip to the Fair and Vultures Fly High, the other side is the title track, Scheherazade, based on 1001 Arabian Nights. After I bought that L.P., I started buying every album they released and saw them in concert 7 or 8 times, including once opening for Yes in Las Vegas.
As always, I absolutely love your reactions! Renaissance are there with Genesis and Yes as my three favourite bands of all time. This song is probably not at all the best for showcasing Annie's unbelievable vocals or the superb musicianship of the classic line-up (which included perhaps the most under-rated bassist of that era, as good as Chris Squire IMO). There are so many wonderful pieces, including intensely moving epics that just blow you away! I know from previous reactions how you have observed how progressive rock bands are each quite different? I think you'll be amazed at how different again the classic Renaissance was! I'd love to see you react to epics like Can You Hear Me or A Song for all Seasons (my personal favourites - lyrics and music totally blow me away every time!), Ashes are Burning, Song of Scheherazade, Running Hard, Mother Russia...as well as some of the shorter but equally really moving pieces like Black Flame, Northern lights, Carpet of the Sun, The Vultures Fly High, Forever Changing...indeed, almost any piece from the classic period! This band were just SO good! And with a five-octave vocal range, Annie was (and remains!) just unbelievable! And the brilliant Betty Thatcher's lyrics were wonderful, and so often still really move me - even after well over 40 years! "Calling to the sky, The thunder drowns my voice within the rain, And I know you're near me. And I call throughout the storm, I know that you don't hear me. I call your name..." "Past or future, here or there, Shelter comes in words from you, so talk to me. I hear your voice, it comforts me, In morning dreams I take your hand, you walk with me..." "Travel the days of freedom, Roads leading everywhere, Come with me now, and show how you care. Follow the dying embers, Cross on the paths they lay, Breath of the past, the earth's yesterday. Clear your mind, maybe you will find,. That the past is still turning. Circles sway, echo yesterday, Ashes burning, ashes burning..." RIP Michael Dunford and Betty Thatcher, creators of some of the most wonderful pieces I have ever heard.
Annie Haslam has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. Please check out Curved Air as well. It's all excellent. Young Mother is a fine place to start.
I saw Renaissance live in the late 70s when I was a student in Manchester UK - Annie Haslam's voice is incredible. Ashes are Burning was their best album (IMO).
Annie Haslam has one of the most phenomenal voices out there. I've always thought of her as the female version of Jon Anderson. Check out this version of Yes' "Turn Of The Century" from Annie Haslam & Steve Howe: ua-cam.com/video/2XqGmz8_Pis/v-deo.html
I believe the meaning of the song boils down to a failed love affair between the moon and the sun. Try Renaissance- 'Prologue', 'Things I Don't Understand', 'I Think of You', 'Carpet of the Sun'. Happy hunting!
I agree, please start with studio/album versions to start with as the sound quality and dynamics really shine through. Live versions can sometimes be good as a second listen. Glad to hear Renaissance on this channel.
I have several live versions of this song, including this one, and I have to say they can't compare to the original album cut as far as mix and sound quality. Do yourself a favor and check it out, and when you're done, check out the entire album: Ocean Gypsy ua-cam.com/video/y4oS7BLTZq8/v-deo.html Renaissance - Scheherazade And Other Stories(Full Album)(HD) ua-cam.com/video/pr8fbG8HH0Y/v-deo.html Renaissance - Scheherazade and Other Stories (1975) FULL ALBUM Vinyl Rip ua-cam.com/video/BIO7wmHTrPQ/v-deo.html
What a GREAT choice! We 9,000 love RENAISSANCE!!! AND you. IMO, this particular song doesn't best shows their strengths (a soft ballad with minimal instrumentation), and the recording has a loud windy HISS, which may have helped carry you away on the ocean...
This is my favorite band of all. They did a good job Live, but you really should hear the studio versions in order to truly hear all the brilliant arrangements, which are too complex for many Live performances. In fact, at many of them the orchestra is missing. The vocals are also recorded much better in studio. You will notice that with this song, Ocean Gypsy, as well. So many great songs from this band! Here's somewhat of an under-appreciated gem for you: The Sisters, from the 1977 album Novella.
Annie is the Ocean Gypsy apparently, Betty Thatcher-Newsinger describes Annie here beautifully, not sure if Annie's relationship with Roy Wood inspired this!!!

Annie Aslam is an angel

Renaissance is one my favorite bands!🗿
The beauty of the lyrics is due to them being written by Betty Thatcher, a poet, who was a friend of the band

Song of Scheherazade is a masterpiece of Renaissance

Curved Air. Another nice band that I think you should react to. Nice reaction btw. Thx.

Thanks Will

I recommend Scheherazade! It's a wonderful journey.
I saw Renaissance live in the late 70s when I was a student in Manchester UK - Annie Haslam's voice is incredible. Ashes are Burning was their best album (IMO).
FYI: When a band called the Yardbirds split up in 1968, Relf and McCarty formed Renaissance and guitarist Jimmy Page formed Led Zeppelin.
For four years she was engaged to Roy Wood of the Move/ELO/Wizard fame.
Listen to '10538 Overture' by ELO.

9000💥🎉💥🎉💥 great job
Imho, Can you hear me Call from Novella is my favorite. It makes me weep with 😂
nice! thank you!
No auto tune!
A great follow-up to this song would be either Witchwood or Autumn by Strawbs. Cheers, Cynthia!
Try Mother Russia. Very dramatic. Ocean Gypsy is low key although lovely.

The Sisters, Ashes are Burning, Song for All Seasons, At the Harbour are great songs by Renaissance. Enjoy.🗿
Trying to pick best songs from Renaissance is like trying to pick best songs from Yes.
Please try "Carpet of the Sun" for a real AMAZING Renaissance song!
What a GREAT choice! We 9,000 love RENAISSANCE!!! AND you.
IMO, this particular song doesn't best shows their strengths (a soft ballad with minimal instrumentation), and the recording has a loud windy HISS, which may have helped carry you away on the ocean...
Must have been their sound effects of the ocean.

Curved Air female prog
A lot of guys had a crush on singer Annie Haslam.
I certainly did when I first saw her in concert in 1975. Still do a bit, I suppose.
Doesn´t this sound as Blackmore´s Night?
Blackmore's Night covered it some years back.
would you do a reaction on Lacuna Coil - End Of Time (Official Video)🙂 one of my favorite songs
Ahh..... Umm Fog machine guy, try to stay in your lane okay !!!
We told you before your not really "In" the Band !! Lol : D
