I have been teaching Grade 1 ELs for 11 years. I use Systematic Sequential Phonics They Use for the Phonics piece. AMAZING. My students love it. We lovingly call it "The Phonics Game". I agree about writing. Students really enjoy writing about topics of interest to them. My masters degree focus was on process writing, so I have taught first graders many revising and editing tips through their original pieces of writing. Systematic Sequential Phonics They Use by Patricia Cunningham has a review day every five days, so I use the built in review day as out writing day. One requirement is that new piece must include at least one of new word wall words from the 4 previous lessons. Thank you for this video. You have motivated me to do Heggerty daily.
Thank you for sharing the foundations of reading; it's necessary for every subject area and for a lifetime! I enjoyed your presentation with expression.
Thanks Benjamin! (that's my son's name too :) Consider joining our book club this spring! As a new teacher, time to get as much professional reading under your belt as you can. If you are a new interventionist, you will appreciate the book I chose. Visit www.readinglabsos.com for details and email me any time... readingdiva06@gmail.com. Thanks for your comment!
This was an awesome video for me to provide my own professional development today. I am a newbie coming into the reading intervention world, but not new to the world of reading and this video definitely gave me clarity and provided effective instructional focuses for reading intervention! Great job!
I'm a graduate student (MSEd w/Reading/Literacy focus), and I really appreciate this video! Thank you for teaching us teachers in such a down-to-earth way. :)
You are a lifesaver! I love your helpful videos and suggestions. I am focusing on reading intervention in my work and although I have been a teacher for many years, things change and I am grateful to your references to curriculum and strategies that keep me updated and on target.
Your video was what I think to myself all of the time! We do daily 5/cafe and we hit the strategies that are needed per the students needs. Higher readers get comprehension strategies and struggling readers get accuracy and fluency strategies. This seems to work so well! I have arranged that my third round is a writing round and we assign a writing for the week with a four block. We start out giving them the topic sentence and conclusion sentence. Then, the students come to me for editing. I send them back afterwards to re-write it on their nice writing paper. Once it’s done, I hole punch it, write the date and add it to their binder. If they have time through the week, they work on their own “fun writing” and those get added to their binders as well. By the end of the year, it’s like they have a book the read. It’s wonderful and you see the progress all in one binder!
Thank you for your video. I’m a 5th & 6th grade Reading Interventionist. My primary focus at this level is fluency and comprehension. I also am seeking ways to incorporate writing into my 30 minute blocks.
AMAZING!!! I am an ELL teacher for Jr High. Those are literally my same words and those of our Bilingual specialist to al of our admin and coaches as to why our Long term ELL's are not progressing. You have preached. Thank you so much.
Thank you for your comment, Blanca! I'm so glad you found value in it! I know it helps so much to be validated. Keep fighting the good fight with your admin. You're kids will thank you for it!
Thank you for this focus. A reminder at the first of the school year to stay on task with the main 5 and bonus baby writing. Do you have a video on how you organize these skills in a weekly schedule? Such as what you do each day for the week? K-6 grade guidance in scheduling appreciated.
Depending on the grade level, I would only focus on 2 (maybe 3) of the skills during the week. For example, k-1 would focus on PA and phonics (particularly blending). 3-4 might focus on a phonics skill with maybe the addition of a fluency component. It just depends on the need of the group. It really goes back to what the data indicates is needed.
I really like the idea of writing that you brought up. For me writing and reading are like siamese twins needed to drive what is read to long term memory. Some teachers have used the Journal writing period in the morning to let students write on any topic.
I find that teaching readers how to annotate when reading really helps with writing also, because you're writing while you're reading. And this can work for any age, really. On the lower levels, students can just simply write down new or unfamiliar words and maybe a synonym or two as well!
Hi Ronini! I'm so glad you have found the video to be helpful. New teachers need all the resources they can get! Have a wonderful rest of the school year!
Hi Linda! Gail Adams is one of the coauthors. I have emailed with her about the future of the product. It is temporarily out of print so search for used versions, but there is a glimmer of hope that it will come back at some point. Not sure what that iteration will look like, but I’m super hopeful! I sat in on a session with Linda Farrel yesterday from Readsters who has a great adaptation to fluency building and uses Six Minute Solution. Check that out if you have a chance.
Mrs. Muccianti, thank you for this excellent video! Very informative and helpful for choosing important target areas of focus. But I was wondering if you had any specific interventions that you use for each of these specific focus areas. Unfortunately, I know that could be a whole 10 videos worth of content in itself. Anyways, keep up the great work!
Hi Michael! Thank you for your comment. You are right! There are so many options. If you have a specific need, let me know. That will help me narrow it down.
I have a couple of his. Maybe this one: Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties (Essentials of Psychological Assessment)
Hi Jason! When I taught middle school, we blocked my classes so one period was English and the other was intervention. That gave me the flexibility time so that I could adequately support my students in both areas. I built in fluency support with repeated reading and also used REWARDS for multi syllabic word decoding support in addition to our core 7th grade ELA curriculum. It was a beautiful structure!
Emily, thank you so much. This is so helpful and will be focusing on all 5 very soon! Emilys rule!!!
You're so welcome!

Hi Nicole! I'm so glad the video helped you! As teachers, it's very easy to overcomplicate our interventions. It's not easy, but in can be simplified.
I'm a graduate student (MSEd w/Reading/Literacy focus), and I really appreciate this video! Thank you for teaching us teachers in such a down-to-earth way. :)
I appreciate that so much Heather! ❤️❤️

I’m happy to have helped!
thank you, I am a new reading interventionist at a middle school. This video helped me to bring in focus beginning the year!
Congratulations on your new position!
I'm so lucky to have found this channel. It helps me a lot in my reading Intervention classes. 💕💕💕

I LOVE the idea of a writing binder! It's a working and useful portfolio that students can review and reflect! Well done!

Writing is a window to comprehension and an important tool for applying phonics skills and mastering spelling. You are wise to bring it in😊

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I really enjoy listening to your experiences, its very helpful to me as a new teacher.
Thank you Norma! It's crickets out there so I wonder if anyone listens. I appreciate your comment! Stay healthy and keep watching:)
I love this video! It has helped me prioritize my focus when I work with my small groups.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, Lisa! It is so hard to prioritize when there is so much to cover! I'm glad this video helped!
Phonological awareness
Phonics
Fluency
Vocabulary
Comprehension
Bonus : writing
Thank you!!!
My pleasure!
Enjoyed your video very much! I am not new to teaching, but I am new as a title 1 teacher. Thanks for helping me focus!
You are so welcome! I'm working on the next video which will look at universal screening and why it's so important. Stay tuned!

Exactly! When writing is used strategically, it can be a powerful learning (and comprehension) tool. Thanks so much for your comment!
@@EmilyMuccianti You are a knowledgeable and creative teacher. I learn so much just watching you. Thank you.

I couldn't agree more! Writing and reading go hand in hand. Writing makes comprehension visible. Such a powerful tool!
Thank you for this reminder to focus on what is important! Seeing the five basics here is very helpful.
Thanks Jeanne! We, so often, over-complicate things in education. Intervention is not easy, but it can be simple. Focus on what moves the needle. :)
Such good information, but of course I know all this because you TAUGHT me! Keep doing your thing, it’s a vital component to reading intervention!!
Thanks fellow Diva!
Thank you so much for sharing this information. Much helpful for me as a new teacher .

Great video! Helpful and useful information. Thank you !
Thanks, Maya! :)
This was so helpful! Thank you!
You're so welcome, Erica! It's a tough gig, and we need to stick together!
Thank you! Good point about focusing on what is most important. Who is the author of Six Minute Solutions?
Hi Linda! Gail Adams is one of the coauthors. I have emailed with her about the future of the product. It is temporarily out of print so search for used versions, but there is a glimmer of hope that it will come back at some point. Not sure what that iteration will look like, but I’m super hopeful!

Thank you Mrs. Muccianti. Just curious what does your classroom environment look like for 7th grade literacy intervention? Thank you for your time.

THOSE ARE THE 5 PILLARS OF READING
Exactly!
