I love when he says "She's the kid at the end of Camelot" and its obvious that the girl doesn't have a clue what he's talking about, but Mac is just eating it up. Thanks so much for posting this.
perfecttrunks2000 In Camelot (the play), Arthur told a boy in to tell the world that ideals are possible to achieve. Will and Mac already made reference to "the kid at the end of Camelot" in an earlier ep.
1:00 Mac knows exactly what he means and know what decision he will make. The intern (who turned out to be one of Wills most dedicated employees from that time on) - on the other hand - looks like she just burned her only chance. Well played, Will :)
I have watched (I believed) every second of this series. I have never seen this scene before. It could possibly be second only to the intern's first appearance in the first episode. WOW! Thank you for this.
See, I’m 51 years old. You’d think I’d be over idealism already. But I’m not, at all. This scene, no matter how many times I watch it, makes me choke up. Every time. All of Aaron Sorkin’s “tools” in his toolkit are there in order for us, the viewers, to experience this palpable sense of hope. The sense that people can be their better selves. That we can rise above our ego-driven desires and grievances. “I know what a greater fool is. And I wanna be one.” “You do. Hire her.” What makes this the greatest country on Earth? The fact that people, that each individual, is capable of wanting to take the chance of being ridiculed, of falling down face first, of losing, in order to do what’s right. And it’s not about this or that country. The question really is: what makes us worth sacrificing for?
Its a shame that a lot of people have seen the first scene in the first episode where Will loses it but haven't seen this one where it shows that he had an arc of seeing her point of view and it makes him a better man for it
I'm not sure it is him seeing her point of view... I think he's just reframed the question. We take the original question as at the present time, America is the greatest country in the world and Will cynically goes to work denouncing such an arrogant belief. While "interviewing" the intern he's changed, he's more optimistic and forward looking. He now frames the question as an ongoing struggle...what makes us better? inspiring the next generation to learn, build themselves from the foundations left behind and keep reaching skyward. McAvoy has shifted her paradigm as Mac has shifted his and a new generation just made plain to him she'll search for honest truth. McAvoy appreciates all that by saying "you do".
This scene is what makes the North Western speech fantastic. The speech by itself is impressive and headline grabbing, it's great writing and great acting but Sorkin pays it off here and it's excellent.
This show really opened up my eyes for Jeff Daniels. Before this show he always seemed goofy and like an actor that would not even be on my top 20 list of male actors. But after watching this show I love him, he is now easily in my top 3 along with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. The performance he put on in this show is nothing other than pure genius and the work of a real artist. Sorry for my bad English.

With us was the company C.E.O who I just got halfway trough the interview with and he just saw my old classmate steal the whole thing from under him. Last line was hire him. Aaron Sorkin is my guilty pleasure. The guy is so over-the-top sanctimonious and cheesy, but damn if he isn't compelling when paired with ghe right actors such as Daniels.
+Trey Warnock - Yes, I know Aaron Sorkin has his own agenda. But, I think his agendas are far better than those we usually see on TV and the News. So, I don't think it's a guilty pleasure, just joy. There are still a lot of people in this country that would prefer Martin Sheen as President, rather than the so called best & brightest now running for President.
Problem is, it's not based on reality. Sorkin's characters are always right, always know exactly what to say, and are always the smartest people in the room (FBI, attorney general, high-ranking politicians? No match for these 20-something newsroom employees! Give me a break) You never noticed they all talk the exact same say in The Newsroom, no matter what color, race, creed etc. they are? The first "ideal" of Sorkin's ideal world is to be really really smart and always know what to say. This is not reality. That's where the guilty pleasure comes from.
Jeff Daniels is such a well-rounded actor. Remember, he also did a small action film back in the day... I forget what the name is... It was with that Neo guy.. what was it called again... dammit... my memory is so quick to fail me these days.
You should watch the clip where sloan is talking to will about what the greater fool is. The greater fool is the person who plays the odds, who hopes for an unrealistic turnout. She talks about how everyone tries to avoid being the greater fool, but the way it's framed the greater fool tends to be the one who does great things, they are the idealists, who believe that sometimes you have to go against the odds. someone elaborate on the part where he said " Camelot, she's the kid at the end of Camelot", i think i read camelot such a long time ago but i dont remember or i simply dont know. Thanks
+Tuan Nguyen It's about a movie or play, I believe. I remember that he was referencing it throughout the episode, something about a messenger or something bringing great news at the end.
+Tuan Nguyen It's a movie/play based off of the story of King Arthur and Camelot. Towards the end of the movie when Arthur and his plans for Camelot have seemingly failed, he comes across a young boy who wants to become a knight. The boy helps re-instill in Arthur his hopes and that despite his failures his hopes and ideas live on within this boy. Before his final battle, Arthur knights the boy and tells him to hide so he can live on and pass on his ideal and let others know the idea of Camelot is possible. This theme is repeated at the end of the show as well.
@clit_niblr036 In the early 2000s Cornish played a character called Penne (Penny) in the Australian satirical series Life Support. I say Penne #1 because she left the series and was replaced by another actress.
I would say that the American dream is still alive. That still allows immigrants who come to America to become great! Also America is probably the most diverse country in the world. Its the pioneer in how to accept people from different cultures and assimilating and accommodate them into the American society. I would say that can be both a weakness but ultimately its greatest strength. Just depends on if people can rise above the trivial and mean differences to find common ground and brotherhood. But yes its true, America is a society in decline, due to its decadence and conservative attitude. Once you are on top and #1, its hard to change and realize that you need to keep growing and adapting. Just look at how America treats its poor, the stagnant incomes, disregard for the environment, and strong ties to the business sector via lobby firms. ·
+perfecttrunks2000 The largest cities, Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Cleveland, New York Boston, Detroit and on an on have the highest crime rate, the poorest populations, highest unemployment, worst education, highest murder rates, highest taxes, worst infrastructure. What do all these cities in decline have in common? They each have a Democrat as Mayor and all have had Democratic leadership for decades. If you were an astute student on history you would understand that socialism has never succeeded. I suspect you have been indoctrinated, I won't use the word educated at a liberal college. Our nation is in decline because of the Gay agenda, the abortion agenda, the Planned Parenthood agenda, The Democrat agenda the Climate change agenda the illegal immigrant agenda. Each a very small percentage of the American population but each trying to influence the majority. We need an American Agenda, one that brings home foreign investment, morality, creates jobs, strengthens the economy, replaces with American labor the jobs held by illegal immigrants . I hate to break the news to you. All men are not created equal, but they have an equal opportunity.
@@TCBnTX01 Talk about looking at a small piece to a large puzzle. Many of the cities on your list are one of two things. Manufacturing Hubs or Shipping Hubs. Some are both. Due to the Federal Government not wanting to get serious on closing loopholes, too much being asked by unions, and other markets opening up overseas those places have all lost jobs. Lots of them. Crime is up because poverty is up. Poverty is up because your corporate masters don't give a shit. Talk all you want about this agenda and that agenda. Here's the one you need to worry about....the rich agenda. Those in power will do anything to keep it. It doesn't matter if you are left or right both sides bow to the master of all. Money. Years ago we knew. We knew the truth. That in order to make money you needed to spend some and work hard. Then came some entitlement. Suddenly futures markets and Wall Street became where the money was made. You didn't need to own companies and if you did you could cut costs everywhere including to your employees because in the end the only people you really answer to are your stockholders. Until you wake up and realize you've been fed a line of bullshit your whole life you will never make real progress. Ever. Wages will stagenate and the whole thing will collapse because they found a way to keep the poor and downtrowden fighting amongst each other. Well that's okay. It's just the American Way.
So interesting to see this comment section. Jeff Daniels did not start with Dumb and Dumber, and go straight to this. He was a great dramatic actor, that Jim Carry had to FIGHT for to get the role in Dumb and dumber because the studio wanted another comedian. Carrey wanted an actor. They filmed Daniels's coverage for 2 weeks to give them the opportunity to drop him at any point. He ended up killing it, and the rest is history.
+realm316 Saying that you are proud to be an American has as much value as it has when i say i'm proud to be European, which is none. There is no America for America is a countinent that people differentiate in North and South America and who in itself has differents countries on it. Therefore you can't gernealize it the way you just did, that is rude. Also i do not understand how it makes you proud to watch this show, for you can and should only fell proud of things you achieved yourrself. Did you had a hand in making that show? Then you can be proud. Otherwise i find it sad that watching a show is what gives you the feeling when you did absoulte nothing for it. But as they say in the show: "What makes America (USA) the greates country?" "You do." You do. Take that to your heart. You let the show put a mark on you. You open up to other peoples opinions. Now take all this form all the sides and make your opinion and go out in the world to do something. Only then say that you are proud.
Tiana Morgen Lol you're kidding right? You got all that from me saying I'm proud to be an American? I, a college graduate and on my way to becoming a doctor, can't even dignify you with a response to that. Happy Holidays, I hope you feel better.
+Tiana Morgen Just two quick points. What would we call ourselves? Citizen of the United States is a bit of a mouthful and any extension of United or States as a term wouldn't work. Secondly if someone is referring to what continent they're from they should say South America or North America not just America. Claiming you're from America when you're from South America leads to similar confusion as claiming to be American when you're from the U.S. This issue is like if I got offended that people from New York City say they're a New Yorker rather than adding in something referencing their city. It'd be weird to get offended when for the sake of brevity and simplicity they drop their title to the simplest option.
Proud to pay your taxes to pay the wages of torturers, to bankroll war crimes, and to do or say nothing whatsoever just a big dumb bovine duh. You'll be a great botox salesman/doctor.
All great shows don't last forever, if they stopped when ratings got low then we'd only remember them for being mediocre. End on a high and we remember the high. Each season is a coin toss and theyre not gonna flip it anymore.
The "greater fool" is technically an economic theory that states there is always a higher price to be found for your goods and services if you work for it. It's one of the biggest drivers of capitalism. However, McEvoy uses it in a more social context here. Americans tend to not be bound by traditional thinking and always believe we can make something "bigger, faster, stronger" if we keep working at it. We also tend to not listen to people who try to tell us what we supposedly "can" and "can't" do. Indeed, it tends to make us arrogant and foolish at times, but this constant desire to outdo what has been done in the past is one of the defining characteristics of American society. In this case, The Newsroom is trying to do something "foolish" and supposedly something that can't be done: make a news broadcast based on objectivity and facts. This girl believes it can be done and is why she wants to work there. Her determination to be a part of something so-called "foolish" is what McElvoy considers to be what makes the US so great: striving for something better instead of settling.
The character's name is Tess. I don't know the name of the actress but I do know that she actually got the job after showing Aaron Sorkin around an actual newsroom she was working at or had an internship with
If you think about it from Jenna's perspective, one day she attended a talk, was approached by a woman that encouraged her to ask a question that ended up ruining (ish) a person's career, yet came to admire the person, applies for an internship, ended up being interviewed by the woman AND the person whose career she presumably ruin, and at last got to watch the woman and the person announced their engagement in the very office. true. but suppose it more realistic if she joined as intern/entry level role. maybe she will get more involved as the series continues.
it'd be a real twist if Will had said.. "Freedom.." :)
Truth. Sadly, that’s in slim supply these days.
someone elaborate on the part where he said " Camelot, she's the kid at the end of Camelot", i think i read camelot such a long time ago but i dont remember or i simply dont know.
Where did these ninja's come from?
"sorority girl!"
"Did you just assume my gender?"
$%!#$ I'm addicted. I have HBO and don't watch it, mainly because I just don't watch tv anymore. This show is good stuff.

@clit_niblr036 "Abbie Cornish"
Ah yes, Penne #1, the best Penne.
"You do." We all do.
I dont get it
In one sentence or less.
こんなん言われたら、炎の中だって歩いて行ける
How did I not know about this show? :D
Because you watch Fox news!
Haha, thats a good joke since I have not had a Tv for 14 years :D.
Haha, thats a good joke since I have not had a Tv for 14 years :D.
Wait you haven't had a tv in 14 years and you're surprised you missed a good show??? lol
good point.
Wow...
When I watch this show, I am proud to be an American.
But as they say in the show: "What makes America (USA) the greates country?" "You do."
You do. Take that to your heart.
You let the show put a mark on you. You open up to other peoples opinions. Now take all this form all the sides and make your opinion and go out in the world to do something. Only then say that you are proud.
Tiana Morgen
Lol you're kidding right?
It'd be weird to get offended when for the sake of brevity and simplicity they drop their title to the simplest option.
realm316 But Trump is your President.
Proud to pay your taxes to pay the wages of torturers, to bankroll war crimes, and to do or say nothing whatsoever just a big dumb bovine duh. You'll be a great botox salesman/doctor.
Omg freya mikelson
Looks like Pat Benetar in her younger days.
does she come up at all in season 2?????????
Yeah, she's a working intern in season 2. She doesn't have any major scenes but she's there.
she's also in Season 3; no major scenes as well but became a bit instrumental in the season's main story concerning issues on news-leaks.
tell me again why this show stopped
Because Aaron Sorkin did not want to write for TV any more.
All great shows don't last forever, if they stopped when ratings got low then we'd only remember them for being mediocre. End on a high and we remember the high. Each season is a coin toss and theyre not gonna flip it anymore.
Yeah that's they quit cause they didn't want to make v all that money, liberals really believe their own shit, what a joke
what does McAvoy really mean when he say "you do"? what's a "greater fool"?
McAvoy means that we as individuals make our country great - or we don't. It's up to us, up to our potential.
Trey Warnock - thank you
Someone who watches this show please help me...............
Who is the woman that says "good show" @ 0:13.
Character name, real life name, either one.
The character's name is Tess. I don't know the name of the actress but I do know that she actually got the job after showing Aaron Sorkin around an actual newsroom she was working at or had an internship with
Her real name is Margaret Judson
