The Empire didn't commit to the Tarkin Doctrine right. They designed based on it, but then they didn't use those designs optimally. The system of "Iron fist in velvet glove" would have suited them well, but too often they refused to use the iron fist where it should have been, and overused it other places when a softer touch would have served their ends better. Example: The Death Star should have been used thus: Escorted by a large blockading fleet and several Interdictors, it would arrive at a planet, the fleet would blockade it, and an ultimatum would be delivered: "We know there are rebels and insurrectionists here. To those of you who wish to prove your loyalty to the Empire, you have one week to bring all of them to us. If you refuse, or if you refuse to submit to the Empire, we will be forced to destroy this planet and end this threat to the safety of Imperial citizens throughout the galaxy." Then, either the prison ship is filled up with rebels turned in by their own neighbors who care more about their friends and family surviving than about politics, or not enough rebels are handed over, and the planet is destroyed. If the planet complies, but one or two cities refuse, a low-power blast sufficient to atomize the offending city alone will suffice. The climate consequences of the bombardment will be a warning to the other population centers to heed the word of the Empire. Don't make threats, make promises. Use the people's own fear and desperation to turn them against the Rebels, whose presence threatens them all. When wielded properly, that fear would make worlds police themselves. Used clumsily, it only causes more uprisings. . With regards to the soft power or 'velvet glove' that the Empire seems to have neglected, even as an autocracy they needed to build a reputation of being stern but fair if they were to gain real loyalty throughout the galaxy. Instead they ended up casting themselves as draconian and vindictive, responding with overwhelming measures when they weren't called for. . The problem was, basically, they needed to appear unassailable while remaining aware of (and protecting against) the flaws and weaknesses present. Instead the commanding officers began to actually *believe* that Imperial power was impervious and scoff at flaws or weaknesses, and that headstrong behavior cost them the war.
Agreed. It's a world-changing event to have an artificial moon capable of vaporizing your entire planet show up in orbit and make demands, and it should feel that way. Since the DS-1 was so expensive and resource-intensive that it could only ever be a "crown jewel of the fleet" sort of limited-run design, its deployment would be reserved for situations where the planetary governor was either questionable or had already defied Imperial rule. Why a career politician, no matter how ruthless, was put in charge of such a military project, I fear I will never understand.
@Joseph Sosa Precisely. It's not enough to destroy the defiant, one must also reward the subservient. Best of all, if one can arrange it so that the reward is subtle and broad, they associate it with the whole of the Empire, not just with the superior who granted it. That builds loyalty to the Empire itself, not just to a commander or a governor.
@Joseph Sosa Not only that, but if you have to pick one (and decide to opt for "be feared" as Machiavelli recommended in that instance), the important thing is to avoid being _hated._ Both Palpatine and Tarkin seem to have forgotten this, and decided to just lash out at the first provocation to prove their point. It's not terribly complicated to be feared but not hated, even though it might sound like it on the surface; building a reputation for being tough but fair is all you really need to do. By way of example, a number of New Republic worlds decided enough was enough, and went so far as to join the Imperial Remnant during the Caamas Document crisis in Legends for exactly this reason. The Empire might be unyielding, but it was demonstrably a more stable guardian of law and order than either the corrupt and arthritic Old Republic, or the free-for-all of the New Republic.
@@tba113 "Why a career politician, no matter how ruthless, was put in charge of such a military project, I fear I will never understand." This is a common flaw throughout history. Military victories are a powerful political tool both for those in charge and the generals themselves. Marcus Licinius Crassus had a fair amount of military experience, but the campaign that got him killed was an attempt to match the victories of his political rivals. The first man put in charge of the Army of the Potomac, Irvin McDowell, was a career officer with close ties to the top military leaders and politicians of the time. He had no field experience and was totally unsuited to lead an army in battle. Politics can't be divorced from military decision making, because military force is a political tool.
And yet it was deployed against a world that even Tarkin himself admitted was not a military target shattering any illusion of a just empire then was destroyed proving that the empire was not invincible.
If you’re alive, why not regain the throne? You did lose Vader and the Death Star, but you have thousands of not millions of Star Destroyers. The Empire had been crippled by the war, but there’s no reason they couldn’t win.

the general public doesn't know the tie fighter is made out of 'cardboard' , they think it's a very good starfighter. So for them seeing 20 tie fighters flying over is more intimidating than 5 actual great starfighters. it's also cheaper to make considering the empire never intended to go into battle
When I think about it now, I would have rather the Emperor melt down the DS II and create a new line of SD that could have the speed of an attack frigates and the the firepower/size of an Allegiance-class Battlecruiser.
@@GAJake Most USA conservatives are also NRA-loving gun fanatics. Not that they really fear their neighbors or criminals or whoever, but they subscribe to the idea that an armed populace will keep the government in check if gets too radical (right or left, either way could be a threat to the USA now). They think that handguns and rifles will keep them safe from the US military if it ever comes to that type of situation. They have no clue what the US Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force would do to them if they rebelled or how fast they would lose.
My goodness, this conversation got off track. For the record, there are a ton of different scenarios in which a civilian revolt can go down. You can have a small, localized revolt, but if the numbers are comparable to the Revolutionary War and 5% of the people took up armed rebellion, things would be very different. Plus you need to factor in what the situation was leading up to the revolution, what would the economic and political effects of any given rebellion would be, how morale is on both sides, the ideologies involved, what foreign powers might intervene to help or distract the government, and so forth. There's no one single way in which such a rebellion goes down. I've talked with many military people about this, though, and the general consensus among them is that if an armed rebellion rose with more capital than the military, they would be able to resist a tyrannical government.
Remember that even though Palpatine declared himself Emperor at the end of the Clone Wars, the Senate was kept around and had at least some power and prestige to it. Leia was using her status as the Senator for Alderaan to get out of trouble (Vader's comment on "you weren't on any mercy mission this time") and when Tarkin tells his command staff on the Death Star that the Emperor has officially dissolved the Senate there is at first worry about how they will run the Empire without the Senate. So until the Death Star was operational there were some democratic vestiges kept around if only as window dressing for the various member worlds. Of course once Alderaan is destroyed the mask is gone and anyone that was fooling themselves into thinking that things weren't so bad now had their noses rubbed in the truth. And then the Death Star is destroyed and everyone realizes how precarious the Empire's house of cards is and the Rebellion starts to grow even larger...
Augustus kept the Senate around and had them do the day-to-day governing. Tbh if you want an example of a good transition from a republic to an empire, Augustus is the best example. Then again, Sheev is no Augustus.
@@NesRuA Augustus was extremely clever. By the time he died not many people had even been alive when there was a Republic and all they would have remembered were the Civil Wars between Pompey and Caesar and the Marius/Sulla conflict. Most so called Star Wars " FANS," never read Wookiepiedia or read any 1990's novels about Star Wars. In Legends, the Founding of Star Wars novels. Tattoonie farms had a bad habit of being raided by the native Sand People, Jabba's thugs , and Owen Larrs was know to be Real Good with a blaster. The open rumor on Tattoonie was Larrs finally got hit by the Sand People. Alderaan was hit by a rogue comment . In the novels after Return of the Jedi, most Imperials believed that the Death Stars was Rebel propaganda . No " Death Stars " were ever built to begin with.
I thought this was going to be about their decision to leave the DS2 unfinished was a brilliant move to lull the Rebels into a false sense of victory and a trap, it worked really well until the shield was down and Lando blew it up.
The main issue of Palpatine's Empire was due to the fact he had no care for how the people would achieve their ranks as long as they would bring results. A Moff could easily have thousand of emperial soldiers lives sacrificed over a pointless assault in order the achieve a victory, Palpatine would still reward the victory rather than berate them for their reckless act for the sake of a promotion and better standing. Another point which was made in this video is the lack of line of succession, Palpatine was too arrogant to believe he could die and thus didn't set up a clear line of succession should he die which would have prevented a massive power vaccum that caused the empire to fracture in multiple factions with only a few actually wanting to restore the Empire as it was. The other issue is the focus on fear alone to keep the people in line, fear is a powerful emotion and powerful deterrent but only lasts so long, eventually people aren't afraid anymore, especially when you consider how aliens were treated under imperial rules, an enemy who has nothing to lose is an extremely dangerous enemy. allowing the xenophobic nature of humans was also a huge undoing on him, had aliens been accepted just as well as any other humans, many worlds wouldn't see any reason to join the rebellion ensuring that the Rebellion itself would only remain a small faction and remain branded as nothing more than a terrorist group seeking to overthrow the Empire over petty reasons. So no, it wasn't the fault of the empire itself, it was how Palpatine built the chain of command and how one could rise above their station not through merit but through trickery and betrayal, which doesn't make for a strong empire but a flimsy and fractured empire. Everyone pulls in different direction rather than aim for a common goal.
Takedrugskillabear I’m only speculating here, but I’d assume that if Palpatine, or anyone else, had any kind of successor in mind, it would be Darth Vader. Of course we all know how that turned out...
Nailed it. The Imperial Civil War was proof of that weakness. You get incompetent Moffs or Warlords that are too power-hungry to not have a common goal in destroying the Rebellion. The Empire's system of government and chain of command is set to fail because Palpatine never considered to have anyone to replace him and the Empire - as a whole -was meant to be an extension of himself. It took Gilad Pelleaon to become a head of state to hold The Empire together when many warlords and moffs failed.
One of the problems with eliminating the Senate , meant a vacume of legitimacy of who the next leader should be. Had the Empire kept the Imperial Senate gatherings. A real next Emporer would have risen . He may have been not force sensitive , or perhaps even a mere puppet of Vader behind the scenes. This would have guaranteed a line a succession , and kept a much more stable galactic government.
The reason being Palpatine never intended to die. His ultimate goal was to achieve Immortality and live eternally as the Emperor, thud having no need for a successor.
@@pancakes8670 If the Senate was allowed to exist, just getting rid of the troublesome elements, it could have kept more stability throughout the Empire. @@jackschuller6684 do you know the history between emperors and senators? It’s not a good one. Roman emperors will tell you that much. There was no way they could have maintained control in the long run, but they probably would have done a ton of damage to the galaxy had they not been taken out of power sooner.
You have to wonder why Grand Moffs still bother with competing with each other. I mean, they are already as high in rank as they can get. So, why bother?
You want to be the number one Grand Moff, and what better way than getting your competition kicked for corruption, incompetence etc and replaced by someone you have a hold on?
There is always room to go up. The more the Emperor favors you, the more prestigious projects you get. And that is just what you control directly. There are also the indirect control. Either by putting your friends and family into important positions or by having people in important positions owe you favors.
I could see a lot of reasons. More favors, fame, money, interest groups, influence, etc. It could also be a result of old political rivalries like Tarkin vs Krennic. In our universe we see politicians of the highest ranks still trying to destroy each other even when it's not necessary.
The problem with the Tarkin Doctrine is that fear is not able to be maintained easily. It is why horror movies and games lose the fear factor over the runtime of the media. You get stuck in a loop of having to go bigger and scarier every "episode" and even then you have to focus on more brute force over time.
2:15 I realize the scale of things is hard to tell in space, but that Star Destroyer needs to move further out of the way of the flagship. No reason to buzz the tower.
It seems that the Empire's biggest failings were in the details rather than the big picture. Things like a lack of PD on capital ships, using cardboard fighters, ignoring the rim in favor of the core is bad, and the fact that Humans are outnumbered by aliens so its best to include at least some of them in government. It would have helped immensely if the Empire had had something that they could prop up as a threat the all of the Empire's citizens (like the Vong) to foster unity, but I won't hold it against them since no such threat existed at the time.
@@adambielen8996 no in Eastern Europe the secret police looked for anything that might undermine the state, even running civilians as informers to inform on friends and family. Look up the stasi, they even monitored their own officers when they were monitoring civilians.
On the Grand Moffs and their internal power struggle, you mentioned it would be better if they'd fixed that dynamic and made it less competitive - but keeping them squabbling is an intentional and common tactic. If they were organized enough, that's when you get internal insurrections against the emperor from an organized force of underlings. Better to keep them fighting among themselves.
Starting up my suggestions again, here and the Discord. A) Harrower class Dreadnaught vs Victory class Star Destroyer B) Personal shield technology compared Dune Halo Mass Effect and Star Wars Counter reset to 1. Good luck on all suggestions, may the Force be with you.
Your points raised here are why, despite it being unpopular among Star Wars fans, the Dark Empire trilogy is my favorite Legends work. One of the Emperor’s first actions was to attack Mon Calamari (the source of the Rebellion’s strongest capital ships and its best Admiral) with the World Devastators, super-weapons that made much more tactical sense than the Death Star (turning the vacuumed debris of enemy planets into military material).
You;ll never convince me the Empire aren't dumb when Clone Trooper armour could take blaster hits and Empire armour can't protect it's users from fluffy teddy bears with rocks.
It depends. It seems like they would have to have acted very competently before the sequels just to get into the position they are in. Then they just absolutely shit the bed once the movies started (this is due much more to bad writing than anything else)
No. They are written incompetently. A fallen empire wouldn't value PD? Especially when multiples Death Stars die to single ships.. Suddenly light speed is a weapon no one ever thought of
Of course they're idiots. As odstarmor557 said, they're doing the same thing the empire did but worse. And by worse i think he mean's making already unnecessarily large ships larger. The empire: We have a moon that can blow up planets in low orbit! The first order: We have a planet that can blow up MULTIPLE planets several billion lightyears away. The empire: Our star destroyers are the backbone of our fleet! The first order: Same thing but BIGGER oh, and our tie fighters are black. Nothing new, they're just black.
Always know that the Emperor knows what's best for you . Never believe that you know better , than Emperor Palpatine . Just obey and things will be ok , remember......... He brought you peace.
SW vs. any other universe is always super unfair. Lucas and Disney have never included tactics at all and their military decisions are beyond nonsensical. Still liked for ya.
I think in rogue one, we get a glimpse as to some of the reasoning behind the Death Star. It's shown the laser's power can be dialed back enough to destroy major targets without destroying the planet, and the rebels seriously consider surrendering upon discovering it. It was essentially meant to be a symbol of imperial might, and what happens to those who step out of line.
I need to keep the Tarkin Doctrine in the forefront of my mind whenever I'm watching The Force Awakens. It was easy to wonder why the First Order was attempting the Fatally-Flawed Superweapon approach for a third time, but as you point out, it's not the dumbest thing in the world to build something that can intimidate the whole galaxy into submission. It's kind of a necessity if you want to suddenly surge out of the shadows to galactic domination in one swift move. Anything less and the New Republic probably would have gotten wise in time to stop whatever was happening. Add to that the facts of the destruction of the New Republic fleet and its seat of government, and it was a pretty shrewd move to build Starkiller. I guess it was just tricky to try and process that thought in the theaters when you're also trying to keep up with what's going on on screen.
Ok why I love the Death Star design. Well for me the super laser is a secondary benefit, but it’s a mobile invasion platform that can in theory defend itself from entire armadas by itself. But for me the station would best fit the role to move around the empire to conflict zone to serve as a mobile command base, troop transport, supply depot, weapons manufacturing, fighter and bomber carrier, etc. it’s the size of a small continent there’s literally no end to what it can do as both a star ship, star base, and FOB.
Imperial Rome managed the states or other groups on its frontiers largely with the threat of retaliation. The legions certainly could move around and deliver that - to several at a time. When they faced continual pressure from _enough_ periphery threats, it was too much. It's a similar instance of needing to rely on the threat of violence when you don't have enough violence to serve every potential customer at a time.
It's funny when you think about the fact that the Empire is oriented toward the Core but the three most powerful people were from the Outer Rim. Palpatine was from Naboo, Vader was from Tatooine, and Tarkin whose homeworld I honestly don't remember the name of.
I think if the empire was ran right. AKA Palatine not being an idiot. It would be an more effective and successful government then any republic. As faction gets bigger. Then you have a massive problem with getting things done. One big reason why the republic has fallen a few times. Is because of how long it takes to get things done. Corruptions becomes a massive problem. Remember the lines at the end of Star Wars galaxy at war forces of corruption. Tyber Zann said "Let the rebels build their new republic. I've always wanted to own a senator."
My impression is that certain Imperial equipment is actually very, very good at doing what its supposed to do- the Executor class or TIE interceptors for example. And it took a massive amount of plot armor for the rebels to win. Even the humble stormtrooper is supposed to be elite infantry, yet in the films they were hardly more than comic relief.
Basically, he Empire exists for one purpose and one purpose only: to serve Palpatine, first in his revenge against the Jedi, and then to rule the galaxy. Once he was dead it immediately descends into chaos. This is, incidentally, why I find rabid Empire fanboys obnoxious.
Jack Sprack weird cause most of the time I usually find rebel/resistance fans acting like douches or authoritarian like despite being a fan of the rebels/resistance. I mean for crying out loud this is a fictional universe that isn’t real and shouldn’t be taken seriously in any way regardless of what it’s based on. If you look for excuses to attack people for having different viewpoints or for being fans of characters/factions that aren’t the same as yours then sorry but you’re no different than the real life equivalents of Nazis/facists/communists etc, plain and simple.
Gabriel Tejada I think that if someone gets all giddy about an authoritarian regime of masked, goose-stepping soldiers that oppress people in the name of a dictator, it says something about them.
Jack Sprack ironic considering most of the imperial fans that I’ve met were genuinely nice and down to earth people while rebel/resistance fans tend to be the opposite. The moment you disagree with them it suddenly becomes a fight or they resort to personal attacks and THAT says a lot about them. Joker is one of my favorite characters of all time right next to Deadpool but does that mean I’m gonna do what they did especially what the Joker does? Hell no, not because it’s wrong and crazy but also unlike you guys I actually know how to separate reality from fiction and I don’t allow it to influence me like some new born child that can be molded into anything. Reality and fiction are two completely different worlds regardless of what the fictional ones are inspired by, I wish more Star Wars fans specifically the crazy rebel fans would stop treating their fellow fans (regardless of their faction preference) like little children that need to be guided because they can’t think for themselves, most of us are fully grown adults who can understand the difference between right and wrong as well as separate reality from fiction but yet you guys can’t seem to grasp that concept which is sad.
Gabriel Tejada I’ll admit there are really cool people who like the empire, but there are also fans of the empire who cant separate fiction from reality either.
HMPS (DZ Imperium) "Waz that?" you may ask. Well, it stands for H.uman M.ech P.ower S.uit. Basically, imagine those jeager's from pacific rim, but more stylish (for lack of a better word that i can come up with in a short period of time i.e, 3 seconds) and efficient. One man, one weapon, easy to mass produce and you if you're already a professional soldier, swordsman or boxer, you can use one of these just fine. That's the plan anyway, once i can make it work in my novel.
I thought you were going I explain how the massive exhaust port on the Death Star 2 was actually brilliant. The Death Star 1’s was actually pretty good just have 50 imperial royal guards (on fighters)guarding the port
The Empire should have done something like 5,000 ISDs and 10,000 Venators (Since Venators cost 1/2 as much as ISDs). Then a fleet would carry enough starfighters to repel a band of rebels and it would also be a phycological weapon because the sheer number of TIEs could strike fear into the enemies of the Empire.
I think that does not include all the various craft needed to make it a carrier, same problem tie's are only worth while in superior numbers or against weaker opponents and you likely run into a scenario where having too many aircraft at one time is too inefficient. A lot of this could be dismissed as Lucas's lazy writing/not studying naval history.
with the empire (and this might have changed since disney took over) they mostly built intimidating-looking stuff. Often full of weaknesses that could be exploited, that were overlooked to save money. On one hand they didn't ever expect to be in open warfare, and secondly the structure of the empire dictates that each officer is trying to out-do the next one. This leads to exploitable oversights due to one guy just wanting to save money and not get force choked. That's how I always seen it anyway. They are more quantity over quality. I guess that's a way of putting it. Then you have an incredibly toxic work environment on top of this... not really a great combo.
Even if you think the Empire needed superweapons, the Death Star was still a waste of resources. You don't need to disintegrate a planet to wreck it, just slagging the crust would be sufficient (and just as horrible). I admit Starkiller base would have been very efficient as a terror weapon (although giving it to the First Order in ep.7 was ridiculous and a tired rehash of ep.4 IMO).
They could recoup quite a lot of resources by mining the remains of the vapourised planet. One could imagine that after a while the Imperial economy could end up becoming dependent on the resources gained by blowing up planets, resulting in them secretly implementing a quota a planets to be destroyed each year in order to avoid economic collapse.
There's a theory that the Death Star was actually meant to combat the Vong, hence why they were building multiples of the DS, and more spheres were under construction elsewhere. It was just built under the guise that it was FOR the Rebels. Sure, the Vong was introduced after the movies, but it gives a nice other theory instead of an insane superweapon built for just rebels.
given the megaton-range yields occasionally cited for turbolaser shots, I'd be surprised if the Death Star couldn't slag a planet with its turbolaser batteries alone.
I very much agree on the second point, though I think a better workaround while trying to secure unity among the Grand Moffs and to help secure the power of the Emperor would be to establish an fleet under the direct command of the throne that can actually as a reserve or hunter killer force against opponents like the Alliance
Have anyone noticed the empire never included aliens? The Jedi order had clones and and different species. The sith had Robots and and different spices. The rebels had different species. The empire has clones in the begging but later on what are storm troopers? Based on new movies they kind of hint at storm troopers being different individuals but it kind of make you wonder if Fin is a clone and all the storm troopers look like him. Based on the cartoons clones are not mind less beings. Rex from the star wars cartoon was a clone with personality. What if the story about Fin being taken from his parents is a memory implanted in to clones by the people that made the first clones. Fin is just and name he created from his code name. The code name is just easy way to keep track of thousands of look alike's.

#askeck I saw your video about fan ships in Star Wars and immediately thought about Halo when you described the Peltas Class. I’d like to see a Peltas Class go against an Autumn Class Cruiser in a vs match.
So I have a theory. This is inspired by an actual scientific theory, which is that the laws of physics are different in other areas of the universe, or at least could be. I believe the hyperspace anomaly is (or again, at least could be) an example of this phenomenon, one where parts of the galaxy border I something similar to that. The Star Wars region of the universe has laws of physics that allow for interdimensional phasing or shifting for things like hyperspace travel and also create drag in space. The hyperspace anomaly is perhaps a region of space which does not allow for any travel faster than light in a vacuum, (although likely all or most other weird stare wars physics is still in play, people don't spontaneously combust upon entry because of different physics). this would both likely be natural, rather than created as everyone assumes it would be. I don't understand why something like this anomaly couldn't be natural, otherwise, why would it have gaps? Creating something like this, especially if it is a region with different physics, would be far more more impressive than anything else in the galaxy. Anyway, what do you all think of my idea? P.S. I really love your videos, I am now a Star Wars supergeek thanks to you. your videos are really interesting and I think you usually do a great job analyzing and ranking in your galactic vs series.
I actually like the idea. I would just imagine how explorers and such would react to this anomaly and attempt to try to beat it either with trying to develop new tech which allows some type of near FTL/FTL, though much more limited and slower than using hyperspace or using someone who is sensitive to the force if said person it can use it in the areas of anomaly. (Unless there is a point where you went so far out the galaxy's influence force powers cease to work.)
@@NightRaven-lh1bfI didn't even know that a hyperdrive bomb is a thing, actually. Also, you're right about messing with hyperdrive (which is likely to land you in Otherspace if you mess up). I hadn't even considered that and it could possibly do the trick. The gaps are just evidence that it wasn't meant to be a barrier if it was in fact created. Honestly, to me, this makes more sense as a natural occurrence.
@@mill2712 The force wielder idea interesting, but I don't necessarily understand it. I will say it would take a lot of concentration to take your laws of physics somewhere that the laws of physics are different.
@@stardragon8585 What I am saying is that it when someone wishes to leave the main galaxy knowing the hyperspace oddity is there they could use force sensitive people to guide the way. Like the "Skywalkers" in the new canon book "Thrawn Alliances." (See StarWars Explained's channel for more clarity. It's a fairly recent vid so it shouldn't be too hard to find on his channel) or force sensitive guides such as the Jedi explorers in the legends book "Outbound Flight." But my theory is the further you leave the host galaxy, the less in tune one is with the force. Go far enough and the force may only work with the beings and material you brought with you, you can only use the force internally, or even not at all. I also believe hyperspace has something to do with the force as well and within the galaxy it allows for a very fast, precise and stable FTL travel. However the further from the galaxy you go the harder it is to use and the less distance you can cover. And if you go far enough from the host galaxy it becomes so inept, one can only travel a few times the speed of light at best, at worst you can only go lightspeed, maybe not even lightspeed or it becomes very unpredictable such as going distances too short or too far than what you wanted, you go to a different plain of existence (Legends had something called otherspace.), or it just loses it's stability and preciseness as if it were like "The Warp" like in Warhammer 40000. Minus the chaos 'deamons' (Or not.) Also all hyperdrive capable machines have a navigational computer or astro-mech that allows for precise travel through hyperspace. Because the intergalactic void is uncharted and mostly empty excluding objects formed outside of/ejected from the galaxy at large, if you wanted to make a jump (If jumps are possible.) you would have to calculate, scan and do small skips with periods of rest each and every time lest you hit something or get stuck in hyperspace/sent to another dimension. I also have a theory that the force might have it's limits despite what Jedi and Sith might tell you. We don't know if it only works in their galaxy, the surrounding cluster/supercluster of galaxies that are near by the Star Wars galaxy, the force has a source outside of the galaxy/galaxies but affects all within the area or if the force only works when your in a galaxy. (Whether it's in the local area or across the universe is unknown. If across the universe or a large portion of it then the force isn't really that limited.)
@@mill2712 you've clearly given a lot of thought to hyperspace. Personally, all I know about Star wars legend is from this channel, I am more of a cannon person myself, as funding all those legends books at the library is difficult. I wasn't even aware that new cannon books had been made yet.
The whole "If every single system revolted they could overthrow the empire, but fear keeps each one in line" thing is exACTly the deal with unionisation and strikes the like.
The Republic survived by not trying to govern. Something as large and populous as the SW galaxy is basically ungovernable as a single nation on any sort of long term.
Get rid of that Yorha and replace it with The Institute instantly, Also, you should put the number of attempts so you can actually keep count of how many times you have done it,
I like writing my personal ideas to this topic before the video, so I will do it: It's actually a genius plan. Palpatine hat two goals: 1. Destroy the rebels 2. Get Luke as his apprentice He didn't build the death star like the first one in order to spread fear and have a super weapon, he actually build it as bait because he knew that the Alliance could not afford for the empire to have such a super weapon which could just obliterate every planet that decides to become independent. He than made it look as though they had a chance just to get them there on his terms. It was almost the perfect plan. The emperors only fault was his arrogance thinking that the ewoks were lesser live forms who couldn't harm him. And of course he underestimated Darth Vader.
Lots of those things you claim are dumb about the Empire isn't even correct. All Star Destroys have Point Defenses, we see them use them in the movies. Also Poe has a Stealthed X-Wing. That's why he is hardly every hit, that's why the AA guns on the Dreadnought in Ep8 didn't hit him. All those saying it doesn't have stealth, because the ship locked on to him. The thing 8s, they never had a hard luck because of the stealth. That and he was broadcasting a signal. It also flat out says its stealth in the ics books for Ep 7 and 8.
But couldn't the First Order just run a "decloaking scan" like they did for those transports later in the movie therefore negating Poe's "stealth" capabilities? How is him "cloaking" any different from what those transports did?
@@wilkor-lc7ox We see them use Point Defenses in both SW ep 5 and 6. They are constantly hitting said things with those weapons. We see them use a rapid fire flak mode in Blade Squadron and also anti fighter proton torpedoes. In SWBF2EA we see a Imperial class also fire a flak more, and also The Rebel Inferno Squad takes out anti-fighter guns on a Imperial 2. Let's put it another way. We see Imperial 2s hitting fighters with their guns, if turbos can't be anti-fighter weapons, would you really want to use something weaker if that thing is tanking turbo lasers?
@@wilkor-lc7ox Also you know in the lore Mon Cal ships have various kinds of pdw? Yet the newest book accidentally left them out, so are you gonna say Mon Cal ships don't either?
From ANH: Han-"The entire starfleet couldn't destroy the whole planet. It'd take a thousand ships, with more firepower than I've..." Dodonna-"The battle station is heavily shielded and carries a firepower greater than half the starfleet." This seems to rule out 25,000 Star Destroyers as some have said before.
The same infighting also happened in the 3th empire between ministry officials and section leaders - it was actually deliberately set up this way - subordinates that scheme against each other are unlikely to scheme together against their superior. That went all the way up the chain of command, with Hilter having ultimative power. So this system dynamic is realistic in-universe.
I think the true end for the empire was the first death star. Not only was it a waste of time, manpower and resources it was also a huge drawback. As once it was destroyed it became a becon of hope for the rebellion and thus gave them more reason to keep fighting.
I heard somewhere that the yuuzhan vong had been encountered at some point by the Empire after Palpatine had become emperor, and he was building these planet-sized death-stars in order to defend against planet-sized ships with were expected to invade and then next fifty or a hundred years.

The Palpa Teens
In the end they went "Bye Bye Bye".
If you refuse, or if you refuse to submit to the Empire, we will be forced to destroy this planet and end this threat to the safety of Imperial citizens throughout the galaxy."
Then, either the prison ship is filled up with rebels turned in by their own neighbors who care more about their friends and family surviving than about politics, or not enough rebels are handed over, and the planet is destroyed.
Well, Tarkin himself is an idiot so...
@@tba113 "Why a career politician, no matter how ruthless, was put in charge of such a military project, I fear I will never understand."
This is a common flaw throughout history.
The psychological strength of the Death Star is undeniable. We see in Rogue One how even the possibility of its existence almost broke the rebellion.
And yet it was deployed against a world that even Tarkin himself admitted was not a military target shattering any illusion of a just empire then was destroyed proving that the empire was not invincible.

Most USA conservatives are also NRA-loving gun fanatics.

Vader: The Emperor is dead. I am your new Emperor. Wanna fight about it?

@@jackschuller6684 do you know the history between emperors and senators? It’s not a good one. Roman emperors will tell you that much. There was no way they could have maintained control in the long run, but they probably would have done a ton of damage to the galaxy had they not been taken out of power sooner.
You have to wonder why Grand Moffs still bother with competing with each other. I mean, they are already as high in rank as they can get. So, why bother?
You want to be the number one Grand Moff, and what better way than getting your competition kicked for corruption, incompetence etc and replaced by someone you have a hold on?
Because simply having the authority granted by the rank of "Grand Moff" isn't enough. You ALWAYS need more.

I realize the scale of things is hard to tell in space, but that Star Destroyer needs to move further out of the way of the flagship. No reason to buzz the tower.
It is probably Needa's Star Destroyer. Vader was glad when Needa finally gave him a reason to execute him.

I think you also forgot the economic benefits of the Death Star. Wouldn’t it be capable of clearing new hyper-space lanes?
Imperial Rome managed the states or other groups on its frontiers largely with the threat of retaliation. The legions certainly could move around and deliver that - to several at a time. When they faced continual pressure from _enough_ periphery threats, it was too much. It's a similar instance of needing to rely on the threat of violence when you don't have enough violence to serve every potential customer at a time.
It was the emperor overconfidence and ego that made the empire lose. Great video and lore.

The Empire had one holiday. Empire day. And it was mandatory to attend.
@@NightRaven-lh1bf I was just trying to lighten the mood :v
with the empire (and this might have changed since disney took over) they mostly built intimidating-looking stuff.

The empire for some reason pushed for human supremacy. They were pretty brutal to other species.

#askeck I saw your video about fan ships in Star Wars and immediately thought about Halo when you described the Peltas Class. I’d like to see a Peltas Class go against an Autumn Class Cruiser in a vs match.
You're vastly overthinking all of this. This is the franchise where 3 foot tall primitive Ewoks defeated a galactic Empire.
The Ewoks had the high ground, and they had plot armor.
I think that the TIE defender's appearance was specifically designed to fit the Tarkin doctrine, as they look pretty menacing.
@@stardragon8585
What I am saying is that it when someone wishes to leave the main galaxy knowing the hyperspace oddity is there they could use force sensitive people to guide the way. Like the "Skywalkers" in the new canon book "Thrawn Alliances." (See StarWars Explained's channel for more clarity. It's a fairly recent vid so it shouldn't be too hard to find on his channel) or force sensitive guides such as the Jedi explorers in the legends book "Outbound Flight."
But my theory is the further you leave the host galaxy, the less in tune one is with the force.
Minus the chaos 'deamons' (Or not.)
Also all hyperdrive capable machines have a navigational computer or astro-mech that allows for precise travel through hyperspace.

I like writing my personal ideas to this topic before the video, so I will do it:
It's actually a genius plan. Palpatine hat two goals: 1. Destroy the rebels 2. Get Luke as his apprentice
He didn't build the death star like the first one in order to spread fear and have a super weapon, he actually build it as bait because he knew that the Alliance could not afford for the empire to have such a super weapon which could just obliterate every planet that decides to become independent.
It also flat out says its stealth in the ics books for Ep 7 and 8.
isd 1 had little bit of point defense, isd II had only heavy turbolasers, and heavy ion canon as an "upgrade"
Those are first order not Imperial

Sheev and the Bois definitely sounds like an awesome rock band name.
I think the true end for the empire was the first death star.
Not only was it a waste of time, manpower and resources it was also a huge drawback. As once it was destroyed it became a becon of hope for the rebellion and thus gave them more reason to keep fighting.
A problem is that lot of worlds started to feel like they only had two choices. A quick death in battle or a slow grinding one under the boot heel.
I heard somewhere that the yuuzhan vong had been encountered at some point by the Empire after Palpatine had become emperor, and he was building these planet-sized death-stars in order to defend against planet-sized ships with were expected to invade and then next fifty or a hundred years.
