  • How I Photograph Weddings as a Street Photographer: In this video, I talk about how I see the correlation between Wedding Photography and Street Photography.
    Using the documented shooting approach of Tony Ray Jones, I'll explain how the way we photography on the streets can aid us when photographing documentary weddings.
    Details of my talks at the 2019 Photography show can be found here: bit.ly/2O2ma3d
    In this video I talk about the great photographer, Tony Ray-Jones and his shooting approach notes:
    Be More Aggressive
    Get More Involved
    Stay with the subject matter
    Take Simpler Pictures
    Relate Background to Subject
    Vary Composition and Angles
    Be more aware of composition
    Don’t take boring pictures
    Get in closer
    Don’t shoot too much
    Not all eye level
    I explore in depth how I use those guidelines in Street Photography, but also how I incorporate them into my documentary wedding photography.
    At the end of the video is another full-length wedding Photofilm, so hang around to the end if you wish to see that.
    As ever, please feel free to leave comments below and I'll do my best to get back to you as soon as I can.

    I gained my LBIPP & LMPA in the early 1980s! I'm confident that your efforts at Wedding Photography would have been laughed out of the building! Snapshots at a Wedding is not Wedding Photography!

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  5 років тому +41

      Luckily, perhaps in part of my 'snapshots' I've achieved my associateship and beyond and been a judge for many panels including the MPA. I've also been to places as far afield as Argentina, Japan, America and Africa talking about my 'snapshots'. Luckily we don't all have the same view of photography - it would be a boring world if we did.
      One thing I am very much aware of though is that one person's passion is another person's negativity. It's a shame, because style and appreciation of images (in my opinion) should be something people consider and, even if it's not to their liking, understand that we aren't all the same.
      Today, in fact, I had maybe 400 people come to listen to me speak about my 'snapshots' at the photography show. I'm not naive enough to think they all loved the images, but much like I don't like fried eggs, I'd never tell my wife she was wrong to eat them.

      There speaks a person who may not realise that lots of people wore shell suits in the 80’s and they were laughable, so not everything that was good in the 80s is good now.
      But I guess you are still wearing shell suits.

      I'm not sure what you're actually getting at Stephen. 'L' is the lowest qualification on the ladder - correct? You gained it (but presumably didn't go any further otherwise you would have said so) nigh on FORTY YEARS ago and yet with your comment you still seem to think you're an authority on wedding photography? Do you not think that it may have moved on a bit on those four decades?
      Actually, I get it now. Given how awful most wedding photography was in the 1980s you're actually giving Kevin a compliment. Silly me!

      @@robgillespiephoto you are assuming I have stayed in Photography as my Profession! Not so! To suggest that Wedding Photography, as a Specialism was bad in the good old days says more about you than us oldies! I did not need to progress in the Qualification route, to quote you, because it was more about ego than ability, and I also managed 12 years Lecturing in the Subject at 'A' level, my main thrust in the Profession as to put my two Daughters through Private Schooling, rather than stick in an ever evolving trade! As to modern Wedding Photography, I would remind you that Couples wanted Fashion / Art shots NOT some plonker running around taking 500+ snaps of everything that happens? We left those shots to ' Uncle Bill ' who was not good enough to take the wedding itself, but could capture the atmosphere? We didn't know how our shots were turning out by simply looking at the DSLRs back, so had to Know about exposure etc., and compose correctly first time! As a reference, WE were expected to hit the correct exposure +/- .5 - 1 exp unit? Can you honestly say what exposure you should be using, without resorting to your histogram? Can you even use a light meter? I bet you don't even know the difference between Depth of Field and Depth of Focus? Don't jump to Google, for an easy answer, just tell me the diameter of a circle of confusion? No cheating!!

      @@jamescrockford5122 is this the best you can come up with, shell suits? Sad little millennial snowflake? That's the new epithet isn't it? I taught the bloody subject for 12 years, not ran around with a glorified auto everything on a strap!

    Brilliant. Love the wedding video. I rarely take images of people but when I do I like them to be of a documentary style. With this in mind I took my X-Pro2 to my nephew’s wedding in March. I applied everything I’d learned from your videos over the years and was delighted with the results. More importantly so were the bride and groom. All black and white of course and at times using an ISO of 12,800! I’ll never be a people shooter. I do landscapes. But I had a great time and captured some of the best images I’ve ever taken. Thank you Kevin.

    Kevin - you captured the heart of the wedding ad most certainly have followed your formula for success. I find your particular style not only appropriate for the time, but more often the requested candid, more modern style. There is a place for classic "stack em' like so many chess pieces and worry about the blinkies" style also for those that like it but I find your documentary style fresh, interesting, and more memorable for B&G, family and friends in attendance and isn't that what it's all about? Great job!

I was surprised to learn that more digital photos were taken (typically) in the last three days than were taken in the entire history of film. Everyone has a camera in their pocket and I’m sure history photos will be preserved and well documented for many years.

    Hi Kevin, a late comment, hope You read it though. One of Your best videos!! I honestly love Your photographs and admire Your ability to catch those unique and often deep emotional moments in Your pictures. One point I often struggle with is how to crop a picture. At what point reframing the picture makes it better? A good example is the photo at 22:06. I think I would habe cropped it on the right to cut out those two people and get the row of people centered and to give them the best impression without distraction. How do You decide? And do You crop Your pictures at all? ;-) All the best, Peter

    Kevin, great video on the similarities of street and wedding photography. My question is about setting your viewfinder to B&W. Do you do this regardless of whether you'll end up making a B&W image? Is the purpose to study the light better without the distractions from color info? Does it help control and maintain usable highlights and deep shadows? Thanks, Frank. NC

    I just love this ethos Kevin. It seems new kit is being thrown at us from every angle with pixel counts ramping up and higher specs being the paramount consideration at times. What about simply taking pictures with the kit we've got? All I can boast right now is an old original x100 with a firmware update and an Olympus em 10 MK 2 with a few nice lenses. I couldn't really afford anything more expensive. I'd love an x100F one day, but alas, not yet. A story. I attended friends wedding a couple of months ago - and just took my old x100 along, set for black and white jpeg. Using your whole approach, I took many shots that day. The couple were completely blown away by them because I caught the 'moments' the professional photographer might have missed when he was busy elsewhere. Everything on this video I completely agree with. It's great to be able to upgrade your kit every couple of years, but if you can't - just love the gear you've got and get good with it. People still 'wow' at your shots.

      If you shoot RAW + JPG, and select Mono film simulation. The viewfinder will be Mono, and the JPG will be Mono, but the RAW will be colour.

    I took pics at a 50th wedding anniversary for some rellies with your philosophy in mind. A pale imitation compared to your work but I did manage at least 5 cracking photos. It blew them away so thanks for sharing your thoughts and your work.

    Love the whole doco style wedding shoot. Been involved in 3 weddings of friends and the 1st was interesting. My friend, a pro, had tasked me with doing the photojourno thing. Shooting bridal prep taught me a lesson re : gear. My colleagues shot with large dslr's and every time they went to shoot people would stop what they were doing and smile/pose! Whereas with my XE-1 I was largely ignored and therefore got the more spontaneous pics....lesson: learned....go small ;-) Oh and the way you weaved "Wales" and "winning" in a single sentence! :-O

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  5 років тому +1

      Exactly. Small definitely helps. Whether that's a Fujifilm or Sony or just a smaller DSLR. It definitely helps. I have my fingers firmly crossed for Saturday.

    Looking at the list, everything was clear except the last one: *No middle distance* , I was hoping for an explanation but I guess you didn't get that one either ;-)
    Always refreshing watching your video's cause they are about Photography and not about gear, and those are getting rare nowadays.

      Yes, the middle distance one is a little less obvious. However, believe what he may mean is not using medium focal ranges of zooms or simply not getting close enough. Thanks for your kind words, as always.

    Kevin, are you always using the flip screen when not bringing the camera to the eye? Thankyou for such informative and inspiring videos!

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  5 років тому

      Not always. I'd say I use the flip screen on the cameras that have it maybe 20% of the time. A lot of my work is on cameras without a flip screen of course.

    Another great video. Many thanks for the continued inspiration. Out of interest, do you ever get asked to take formal posed pictures as part of the package? Or is that something that gets taken off the menu right from the start. I can see a bride getting half way through the wedding.....”can you take a picture of me with the bridesmaids”. Do you tactfully decline? Or just humour them and delete it later?

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  5 років тому

      It's really all part of the branding. Typically clients who don't want that come to me. That said - I'm not going to refuse the odd shot here and there, but if it looks like it's going to turn into a fashion shoot then I'll explain again why I'm there.

    Great tips! Do you feel like the xt2 is still a good camera for weddings? Also what about the 23/50 f2s? Ever use those anymore or should one save up and get the 1.4/1.2 versions? Thanks!!

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  5 років тому

      X-T2 is a great camera. I used it for two years without a problem. The F2 lenses are fine, but personally, I use the faster ones more often.

    I believe I’ve seen each one of your videos that come on UA-cam since I am one of your subscribers. I believe you said you shot all your work in black and white. So is one card slot use for black and white and the other for color? The reason I ask is because quite a few of your images or in Colors. I enjoy your video though.

    Thanks Kevin - your best video ever in my opinion - Brilliant!! I’d be interested to know your average number of “Keepers” to images taken ratio and do you have a view on “an ideal” ? - thanks - Peter

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  5 років тому

      Thanks, Peter. I'd say in Street, the percentages are much lower. Perhaps 1 in every 10 I might be happy with. And that doesn't necessarily mean I'd print or publish them. That number is even lower. For weddings, I'm aiming for 1 in every 3 images to get to the client these days - though often it's nearer 1 in 4 or 5.

    • @petertaranscorsese2900
      @petertaranscorsese2900 5 років тому

    So you shoot RAW and view in black and white (to see the light).... Will the image still be in color? I like the idea of viewing in b&w if possible while color capture images, usually both jpg and raw on my Canon dslr D70 and mirrorless M50.

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins  5 років тому

      Yes, the RAW files will always be in colour (unless you are using something like a Leica Monochrome camera).
