When something sucks but you can improve upon, do you want to develop good habits to be a better artist? or be allowed to have bad habits and continue to not be recognized. As an artist myself I love criticisms like these I saw this video and went and looked at my own photography and looked at it from this mans prespective and through that I improved greatly from criticism that wasn't even directed at me. It's the power in the words.
I was in the audience of a wood sculptor's panel just out of curiosity, and man, those guys are more pedantic and difficult than any other kind of artist I've ever known.
this B'klyn "tough guy" should use his criteria for a "good photograph" and critique some of Daido Moriyama's out of focus photos...Gilden's machismo and loud mouth get in his way of providing insightful criticism....I'll "leave it" at that!!
Geez, a lot of people are appalled with even the most conventional critique of someone's photography. First, I assume that these photographers put their own work up for critique; it's not like Gilden went to the nearest kindergarten to criticize the macaroni art. Secondly, photography is subjective; it's his opinion, no one else's.You clicked on this video to hear someone's opinion about "What Makes a Good Street Photograph" for a reason. Lastly, if everyone had the same positive opinion about someone's photography, photography as an art would probably cease to exist, and everyone & their grandmother would be a magnum photographer. Don't be so salty over critiques. Try to learn from them.
These are his own opinions on how the photos should be taken or how he’s used to taking the photos. Every photographer has their own way of taking photos and I personally like the way he ‘criticized’ these photos because of how honest he was.
If you can't take the constructive criticism (Specially in the arts) go find another line of work. As an animator, I'v had pages, upon pages of drawings shred to pieces with valuable criticism. Get out of your bubble and strive to become better at your craft.
Unless you enjoy Bruce Gilden's work, be careful in taking his advice. It makes no sense to take advice from someone whose work you consider trash. I find I have to repeat this because people typically get drawn to these "tell-it-like-it-is" critics, without realizing their advice is meant to make you become photographers like them. So, unless you want to be like Gilden, take his advice with a grain of salt. I personally prefer the work of Uta Barth, but of course, someone people may consider her work trash haha

+Dracule Mihawk this isnt art it's photography, and why not there's people out their who are a lot better and smarter than you may aswell learn summit from them
+The peps photography can be art , it's about the subject or emotion in the piece that makes something art not the medium
nat van photography is a means of telling a story it's more a kin to writing than art. Photography is meant to bring peoples attention to a subject be that a man's face or poverty.
The peps so still art
nat van no it's not at all
I found this to be very amusing even though I don't agree with some of his points or "interpretations." It's always great to hear honest opinion. More videos like this please :D
Like what
I love photography but strongly dislike photographers. does that make sense?
no
Yes. I'm kind of the same. Although I love Bruce Gilden. He has so much wisdom to learn from.
kind of like art critics?
Nope ! You might need to have your head examined !! That's like saying you like TV shows and old movies but despise Television sets. SMH
I am not becoming a Bruce Gilden fan
*this is another example of people just buying their "talent"*
Should rename this series, "How to talk out of your arse."
Do more with pro photographers
"Look at us Americans. Aren't we ignorant?" Hahaha I love this dude
Wow, an image containing an apple and a woman being essentially being compared to the Eve as the evil temptress. What a fourth grade level of analysis.
If he has fourth grade analysis then yours would be pre-k
What's your analysis of it then?
My OCD is killing me with that little string whatever the hell it is on the pencil
I think I'll leave it.
MOAR!
this guy knows his stuff and is very funny. more please
that was useful and great
This was great thanks, I'd love more like this, thanks Vice x
Can we submit pic ?
His pencil is so annoying !
That piece of string on the pencil!! The only thing my eyes have been following throughout the video
WHY is it so difficult for photographers to NOT be pricks about other peoples photos?
06:22 - Photo is not "organic" - Indeterminant and overused to the point of banality word that is helpful to use when you just need something to criticize. :)
WomackPhotoKCMO my thoughts are because they develop a bad attitude due to so many people not paying them after jobs are complete.. or editing their shots, or not liking their work.
Most photographers are even harsher on their own work. I thought he was actually nice.
I was in the audience of a wood sculptor's panel just out of curiosity, and man, those guys are more pedantic and difficult than any other kind of artist I've ever known.
what a load of nonsense
I think he might have thrown away a few gems in the beginning simply to establish himself as kind of a dick.
More! This guy is awesome~
citing Zappa: talking about photography is like dancing about architecture
Link of the full video?
irritating at best !
Really enjoyed this. Wish it was longer. Might be brutal but that's the best way to learn. Anyone know if there are any similar clips?
this B'klyn "tough guy" should use his criteria for a "good photograph" and critique some of Daido Moriyama's out of focus photos...Gilden's machismo and loud mouth get in his way of providing insightful criticism....I'll "leave it" at that!!
Jesus Christ anyone with a camera can take a picture and I can also make stupid stories like this guy
Henry Blackburn ^jelly
BAHAHAHA. Anyone can take a photo but not everyone can take a good photo. I highly doubt you take good photos.
Peel that crayon or pencil's loose lace, brother. It is so annoying to see that shit all
over ignored by you as if it doesn't bother you at all. WTF. Otherwise, nice critique, although in your funny Hibronics accent. 😜
Sweet Jesus! This guy's perception of the photograph he's destroying at around 5.00 is total crap. The apple is the forbidden fruit. Why people hang on to the ramblings of these so called icons leaves me perplexed.
I'm okay with this video, i'm okay with the pencil, i'm okay with his critics,
i'm just not okay with his oversized pockets vest.
