CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Zorro (Antonio Banderas) infiltrates the hacienda to steal a map and fights off Montero (Stuart Wilson), Capt. Love (Matt Letscher) and all their guards.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Martin Campbell, well-known to the action arena after 1995's GoldenEye, teams up with executive producer Steven Spielberg to bring the first Hollywood production of creator Johnston McCulley's Zorro in over four decades to the big screen. With scenic 18th century Mexico as a backdrop, Anthony Hopkins plays the original Zorro, a.k.a. Don Diego de la Vega, intent on revenge after rival enemy Don Raphael Montero (Stuart Wilson) murdered his wife and took his daughter, Elena. After being imprisoned for 20 years, the fabled hero removes his mask and takes on a tarnished young apprentice, Alejandro Murieta (Antonio Banderas), to infiltrate Montero's plan to take control of California from Santa Anna. A boisterous outlaw with his own desire for revenge, Murieta works with Diego to avenge his brother's death by the sword of Montero's right-hand man, Captain Harrison Love (Matt Letscher, in his big screen debut). After Diego's extensive training in swordfighting, discipline and manners, a new Zorro appears wreaking vengeance and stealing the heart of a now-grown Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones). A sizable summer hit, the film served as Zeta-Jones' stepping stone to leading lady status as the high-spirited heroine.

Fun fact: Antonio Banderas performed every single stunt that Zorro does in the movie, except for one. He insisted on doing every single stunt himself, but his agent didn't want him jumping over a horse during the chase scene. That's the only stunt where he was replaced by a double; the rest of the stunts are all Antonio. That passion and enthusiasm for the acting job is what I love about the man :)
MrPjw5 And considering that this was one of his dream roles, I'm not surprised that he did all of his own stunts.
I did wonder about that, because even in the cape and mask, it looks like him. I wondered if it was him or a stunt double.
Cool. You know my only complaint. Wasn't Zorro supposed to have a mustache? Part of me wonders if they had tried it on him and it just didn't look right? Any insights?
There's no hard and fast rule that says he does. They put a prop one on him when he was disguised as Don Alejandro, but I think it helps draw another distinction between Alexandro's Zorro and Diego's Zorro.
I'm sure he had a double used from 1:07-1:17
I think in this entire movie, this part captivates the essence of Zorro in the best way; sly, cunning, smart. I can see and understand why Batman was based on this character.
Michel van der Linden BATMAN WAS BASED OFF ZORRO?! I didn’t know that. Zorro is way better in my opinion
@@zeejayl752 yup, wealthy aristocrat by day goes out night dressed in black to protect the people in his secret identity. has secret cave and weapons and a sweet ride
The sweet ride aka Catherine Zeta-Jones right???
@@cptercio Not to mention, Bruce was watching "Mark of Zorro" in the theater befor his parents were murdered.
Except this dude had more sense of humor than batman butnhe chose a good inspiration
1:06
“This is called the training wheel. The Master’s circle”. This moment perfectly embodies that Alejandro is no longer a reckless and inpatient student, but a master fighter. He didn’t pay his attention to Love until Love came in. “Captain Love doesn’t exist until I say he exist”.
Visual storytelling at its finest
Antonio Banderas was born for this role
Yes. When the role is ready, the actor will appear.
:D
Eh, I still think Duncan did it better.
***** i think both are awsome
Don't get me wrong, I love all of the Zorros, except for the one in Zorro: The Chronicles. That one was nafsty.
I love how Don Raphael displayed more of a fencing style with his sword fighting. His character was super rich so he probably learned to sword fight taking fencing lessons or something
Fencing is usually one of the sports associated with the wealthy class in movies
Don Raphael Montero used to be the Militar Commander of Los Angeles, California, he knew far more knowledge about swordfighting in his youthful years
montera was gouvernor of california and most likely an army officier in the 1700's where the sword was still a prominent battle field weapon. It's very likely he was trainend pretty well with it
I have a feeling that Don Rafael was a better swordsman from the American Captain and unexpectanly very close to... Zorro.
@@vdLeo-je6os First Zorro >= Don Rafael > Elena > Second Zorro >= Captain Love.
We are long overdue for another good Zorro movie.
The last one wasn't good though.
112steinway I hear something of a crossover/double hero film with Django is in the works.
Mr. Scratch A good start.
+Mr. Scratch not a film, a graphic novel
+Kody Prunella well they do want to do a film based on the graphic novel.
The realism in this fight scene was nice and subtle. Zorro is able to outmaneuver Captain Love and even mocks him at times due to the fact that love is a cavalry soldier and is just not as good as Zorro's pure swordsmanship and agility training. Montero on the other hand has clearly not neglected his training despite his age. Thanks to all of his experience he can even best him on a one-on-one grapple. Even so I think Zorro's greater stamina and agility might have eventually allowed him to win if it was only him against Montero. The perfect fight scene to showcase each of these three characters skill and ability sets.
Official Imperished That and the fact that Zorro's willing to resort to mockery to make his opponents angry and thus sloppy. He's a skilled swordsman to be sure, nigh-unbeatable with a blade, but he often wins through cunning.
+Official Imperished
GTFO that was sooooo unrealistic
I like how Don Montero was no slouch with a sword and could hold his own.
Well he always wanted to face him again. Even if it wasn't De La Vega.
While I'd disagree that it was realistic, it was believable for each of the characters in the movie and made for some nice subtle touches to this fight scene.
Anyone else love the fact that Montero just rounds the corner sword already drawn prepared to fight and just whales on Zorro with vicious ferocity?
Montero was going all Braveheart on him
I love how Zorro's essentially commanding the fight; he's like, "Let's dance; follow my lead!"
That's the concept of the master's wheel
It isn't just one man damn it! Its Zorro!
@Studio Autio wrong; Batman was inspired by Zorro.
B Masc and the shadow
@Studio Autio Don't you mean "mexican batman"?
@@lucarod8877 yes Joaquin was Mexican he was also indigenous he was Chumash Indian this is based on him.....
@@anonymousnativeamerican7755 It's still incorrect to say that though, Batman was inspired by Zorro, not the other way around.
I love how Zorro fights. Hes calm and collected and even teases his opponent to rial them up
rile, not rial
@Kaustav Chakraborty Zorro would absolutely butcher most "skilled ninjas" (they were thieves, sneaks, and assassins, not really master combatants...if they got into a fight, their first objective was to get the hell away) and a Samurai's best chance would be if he had his full suit of armor. Rapier fighting is VERY fast and VERY dangerous. I imagine a fight between Zorro and an unarmored Samurai would be like the ending fight of the movie Rob Roy...except Zorro wouldn't get cocky at the end and would just finish the Samurai.
What I don't understand is why he doesn't attack, he only defends himself, it's like if he only had defense but no offence, he didn't even try to kill Captain Love despite claiming several times he wanted to kill him.
He is Batman and Spidey's fusion (even thaught he's older)
What's really interesting about this is that the fight choreographer for this film, Bob Anderson, wore the Darth Vader costume for the lightsaber fight in Empire Strikes Back and helped with the choreography there as well. He was also and Olympic fencer. When I found this out my heart danced with joy as Empire is my all time favorite movie. This version of Zorro is such a gem and as others have stated, Banderas was born for this role!!! There is so much wit in this movie. I hadn't watched it in years and fell in love with it all over again recently.
This is one of the best action movies ever made.
Love how Rafael old man jogs around the corner, then starts laying into Zorro like a boss.
Anyone else wish this scene was longer
Favorite scene in the entire movie. Young Zorro at his absolute physical peak.
I understand why you would want that, because it's so danged cool, but no, it shouldn't have been longer! It leaves you (the audience) wanting so much more, that you can't wait to see the rest of the movie, especially the final showdown with Captain Love!
2018 and still one of the best movies ever!!! An instant classic and movie jewel. I grew up with this movie and it's one of my favorites. I wish they made a reboot but that does the movie justice. Antonio Bandera was born for this role so it will be hard to even come close to the OGs. Miss these movies like this, today's movies will never ever stand beside these movies! Everything was just so realistic and visually stunning. Now it's all computers and shit. Don't get me wrong there are movies from this decades that I truly love. But nothing will ever compare to the movies of this era. El Zorro is by far an excellent movie.
I love how Zorro adapts to each perilous situation. For instance, he was easily handing Captain Love his pompous American arse and making a game of it. But it was obvious to him Don Montero had waaay too much experience to be effed with on that level. Even so, he also knew Love’s comparably sloppy and predictable military swordsmanship would cramp Montero’s refined Spanish style just enough to duel them both simultaneously for the few moments it would take him to exit the matchup altogether. Which he needed to do quickly because more guards were on the way. Beautiful choreography and an excellent commitment to the overall continuity.
This scene got me so pumped back when I saw it. The sense of suspense and action never seemed over-the-top or artificial. Great choreography and steady-handed cinematography. Seeing this scene now makes me wish I had time to take a fencing class again.
I have to say that Zorro is an excellent swordsman. He has the ability to stay calm whole angering his opponents, not to mention his ability to control distance and spacing between opponents in a fight and have control over the space and terrain he's fighting on.
Don Montero is a pretty strong dude for his age.
RollTide Roll I agree. One of things I liked about the character was that he was a villain that was hands-on. He didn't make his soldiers fight his battles when he very could have.
He is supposed to be. Imagine him as the final boss in a game :P
Montero is portrayed as one of the best swordsmen in this film alongside Diego, Alejandro was good thanks to Diego's training, but he didn't have the experience and skill that Montero had, notice how Montero was in control the entire time they were in exchange? Captain Love is good, but he too doesn't have the same level of experience, he's likely not fought many experienced swordsmen, he is afterall; a Soldier.
ChaoticNarrative that’s very true that he was in control during each exchange, which I find interesting because he seemed a bit slower than Love or Alejandro. Perhaps it was because his strikes were a lot stronger?
Age will slow you down somewhat as a swordsman, but his movement left little opportunity for Alejandro to attack and his defence was almost perfect, notice how Love tends to lose his temper too quickly for his own good? Though Montero has a certain air of rage about him in the fight, he kept it more or less under control, said rage was likely because he's staring at his nemesis(or so he thinks, the later athletism gives it away that it's not Diego), it took someone of Diego's experience to take him head on.
Elena's swordplay is more or less equal if not slightly greater than Alejandro's due to learning from a very young age but she let her temper get the better of her, nonetheless she did manage to disarm Alejandro mid exchange, but Alejandro was quick and clever; it's not always the greater swordsman who wins afterall.
I always loved Don Rafael in this scene. His style is so agressive and powerful. Really outstanding. Notice that Zorro "loses" both duels with him.
True he does! The first duel - the only thing that saved Zorro was Love jumping in. Had not Love jumped in, Montero would’ve overtaken him.
Not only Banderas gives Zorro the hispanic charme, this heat perfect for the role, but you can see the fine storytelling that gives the movie more credit. Diego always told him to wait that Love enters his circle, while he was a rebel guy that wanted to kill him immediately, and he could have done it when the training was completed but did his waiting, both acting as a spanish gentleman and during this fight. He doesn't attack him first, he doesn't try to kill him, he doesn't takes on anger, he just takes the map knowing that soon the circle was about to close. That's why he deserved being worthy of being Zorro, because he didn't use his ability just to kill the Captain, he and Diego used all what they got to stop Montero and doing the right thing. In the end both Zorros get their revenge, but most of all they save the slaves and the possibility of a war with Santa Anna.
It's a perfect attention for storytelling that is not so sure to keep
Who knew Eobard Thawn used to fight Zorro lmao
Loved this movie since childhood
"What kind of name is Eobard?"
@@williamcostigan91 Eobard Thawne is a comic book character from the future ( born in 2151 )
@@OfficerDoofyInTown I know, I was quoting Thomas Wayne from the Flashpoint Paradox.
@@williamcostigan91 ah you got me there 😁👌
I only recently realized that was the same actor.
So cool seeing Zorro fighting Reverse Flash before The Flash came out! Love this movie!
This is easily the best scene in the movie.
Gotta mention the amazing score from the late and magnificent James Horner. The flamingo dancing to hype tension during the swordfights....brilliant.
The first 20 seconds of this fight scene was something else
Seeing this again after having watched the Disney 1957 tv series, I can't help but wonder if aspects of this scene are a bit of a tribute. Don Diego's hacienda had a tree standing in the middle of the sala much like this; during his final fight with Capitan Monestario, they hacked up a candelabra in a similar way to how Alejandro and Rafael do here.
As an aside, I love how acrobatic this Zorro is :D
It’s now Disney +
The guy moved and fought great against multiple opponents. Loved both Zorros with Banderas.
Captain Love's name is ironic, he projects none in this movie. You might say he's the REVERSE.
Well, might see a FLASH of it here and there, but you're quite right.
He is surnamed love, but he provokes hate
*ominous vibration plays in the background*
Aaaaah
😏 I see what ya did there.
Look at the symbolism in 1:09
His circle he never allowed anyone to enter it.
Yet he allows Cpt. Love in, he(zorro) wants him close in his circle to finally give that last killing blow but misses his chance.
Seeing all of the past Zorro movies and movie serials, this movie showed the JOY of being the FOX...he is one step ahead, and never shows fear...and knows how to beat his enemies...VIva la Zorro!
You know they're trying hard at a fun fight scene when raphael continuously misses zorro and hits the the candle stick again and again until he just pushes it out of anger
0:40 that dual wield was the sickest things in a movie I’ve seen where the GOOD guy fights two bad guys simultaneously and manages to come out on top lol
Lol never ceases to crack me up when Zorro knocks Captain Love down, and Montero just books it around the corner with a sword (pitchfork style) AGHHHHHHH
Wide shots, wonderful stunts and great coreography, Campbell did some excellent work directing this. Still holds up 2019.
This is what it feels like playing Assassin’s Creed
Love that cheeky little smile at the end
Coral Roper dude yeah and the music at that moment!! Him realizing this is what all my training was for..
Think Zorro, think Antonio Banderas. Simply elegant, natural, and irreplaceable.
1:04 my favorite part :D
I'm upset. No one understands why this is my favorite movie. It's a shame it's reputation is overshadowed by the scene where he cuts off her dress.
ikr
Not sure if "overshadowed" is the right word. I think that scene even elevates the movie's reputation. Just one of many memorable moments.
What?
+inkblood You mean "sexy". It's a flirtatious duel, and what many consider to be one of the film's highlights.
same here dude
I have always been fascinated by Captain Love. To me, he doesn't have the face of, nor does he carry himself like, the kind of villain he turns out to be.
He just seems like a Captain who treats what he is doing like just another day of work.
I can't tell if that is bad casting, or if they were going for a "creepily evil" feel with him.
1:07 my god James Horner was taken from us too early!
Starting at 1:06 is the moment I fell in love with the movie completely.
A rare masterpiece that kind of surprised even the people involved. This happened because every role was spot on. Cast, directors, writers, and crew. Beautiful movie.
My favorite scene! I will admit that it used to be the fight between Zorro and Elena, but in my old age have realized this is the best fight scene of any film.
I loved this part SO much when I was a kid. Still love it =)
I can't let my son watch it yet because of the rating, but he will.
Prime-Antonio was the best Zorro ever.
God I miss movies like this!!!
when he uses the branches to do flips I just thought, "those branches are way too thin to support his weight and they would just snap off..."
The Fighting with the Music
Masterpiece
My man duel bladed and took on TWO VERY EXPERIENCED SWORDSMAN....LEGENDARY!!!!
one of Cinema's Best sword fight scenes.
It's great no doubt, but i would recommend to everyone who loves this movie to go and watch Basil Rathbone VS Tyrone Power in the Mark of Zorro. Good grief THAT is an amazing sword fight.
0:44 That movement just loved it ❤️
Catherine in this movie was a true babe and Antonio was just amazing as Zorro. They have to literally make a new Zorro movie. Like in this time line or something like that. Everyone needs to see how Batman started and it was thanks to this héroe. Batman and Zorro two of my favorite characters
Zorro never gets old. The Iconic Antonio Banderas everybody!
So... why hasn't anyone made a Zorro game yet?
If you reedit you could get an Assassin's Creed game out of it
+HonorAmongScars all the Zorro games so far are quite mediocre, although i am writing ideas for a PC only Zorro game. it will be a doom style first person shooter with huge amounts of difficulty. there will also be co-op, competitive multiplayer, and plenty more. sadly now, i do not have anything yet except for a book filled with ideas, and i am currently writing a novel the game is based off of. contact me if you are interested
Kody Prunella I was thinking of Red Dead Redemption meets parkour.
well... it is also open world, and you can do parkour. but the main focus is liberating towns from the soldiers and doing daily challenges. for the multiplayer, its peasants vs soldiers, with other factions like pirates, natives, and groups from other movies making an appearance.
So... like Red Dead Redemption with parkour?
There is always a replacement, but antonio banderas for zorro, they still haven’t found it yet.
1:10 The guards should know to NEVER attack an enemy who occupies the high ground.
What’s amazing is how Zorro is able to handle Captain Love- but with Don Montero he struggles and is pretty much overtaken on both encounters with him.
Who knew that Zorro was fighting the general would later become the reverse flash?
Why didnt this get as much hype as black panther? Firsf meskin super hero
2:04 he runs to the side and they are all still charging at the wall instead of him XD
Stuart Wilson crushed it as Don Ralphael!
This is one of the most coolest fight scenes of ive ever seen
Run Zorro RUN!
They should do Django vs Zorro like in the comics.
Zorro would absolutely drown Django in charisma. Django has nothing to do.
Right, run at the map instead of Zorro.....
LMFAO!!!!!!!
and huddle in a circle underneath it instead of moving out of the way
Yeah, I get a kick out of that. Still a great fight scene, though.
It makes sense. The guards were running at Zorro before he moved out of the way, and it's hard for people to stop on a dime and change direction.
Can we acknowledge how sweet the govs sword is!
such a classic, something special about 90's movies like this
Its kinda interesting in this fight:
If you focus on Don Raphael, you can feel the anger when he fights. He is soo angry of seeing "Zorro". Eventhough to him at this point, he believes Diego to be dead. Just seeing the outfit of Zorro makes his blood boil. The yelling & the facial expression he makes through the fight, tells his history with Zorro. Very great little detail & very great acting by the actor(sorry, can't rerember the name).
I had a zorro costume when I was little😅....fun times
So many soldiers w guns but none of them thought to shoot when he was on table or climbing tree
Kind of hard to hit a moving target especially with back then with their pistols and how bad some of them are at aiming lol
Всегда знал что Зорро за Россию!
I like that he almost gets skewered multiple times, but he blocks it.
One of the last true swashbucklers of our time. Man this film was great!
In one word: Perfect.
Don Rafael is better in this duel, he face the original zorro and was more experienced in the sword but had the age against him. Great movie.
Watch this movie you'll never see a movie like this ever again exactly fantastic all the way down to the choreographing the actors and actresses did a fabulous job bringing the characters of life in this movie in the soundtrack this movie was actually fantastic a fun movie for generation of families to enjoy a Timeless classic that will stand the test of time
Who doesn't love this movie
Eobard Thawne from the 25th century traveled back to time to fight a masked mam who’s really good at swords. As you can see, Thawne can’t use his speed because he’s losing it.
After this movie, no one could play Zorro but Banderas.
The fencing in this movie is absurd. Good thing I watched it as a kid so I could enjoy it.
Goddamit I fucking lovr this movie. I remember when I drew a huge Z with a pen on my Grandma's wall after I watched it. It's my childhood. I only wish They could make more with this character
I saw this when I was a small kid and loved it
@0:46 loved how he does a flip and runs away. While Cpt Love and Montero are like >:O

Back when they actually trained actors to do stuff and not just use excessive cuts and shaky cam.
if you look carefully, this is basically the same tactical situation that Alejandro ran into in the soldiers' barracks . . . where he almost got killed. The difference is that THIS time, he knows how to handle it.
