He's talking facts it's crazy tho that he said us Jamaicans industry is built and good yet there's still a massive issue with the dancehall music industry and needed some fixing up too. The whole English speaking Caribbean need to sort out our music industry man so everyone else can't just use our music and culture and make millions while the ppl who really do it bruk
I agree with most of what he said but Trinis aren't the only ones. No West Indians except for Jamaicans represent enough for their own as far as music is concerned. Nicki nor Rihanna does it. When they do West Indian music it's always reggae or dancehall
Kevin Kelly black Americans and Jamaicans are great but so is the rest of the black diaspora. We all have so much offer to world. Ignorant to think only two groups out of the whole diaspora are dope.
Kevin Kelly who denied that??? I said nothing in either of my posts that they aren't mimicked. So what is your actual point? You responded to a comment that had nothing to do with who is or isn't a trendsetter because you wanted to be divisive.
Facts b but I think they only do it caz also reggae and dancehall music is kinda like the face of the Caribbean because of what bunji said and those big acts only will do the stuff out side the box that the main music industry in America is comfortable with.
You are very divisive. As for black Americans that goes real deep because most of these rappers especially coming from NYC have a Caribbean background do your research. If you Jamaican you should be proud you have a music most people embrace but everyone has something to offer. Caribbean music is embraced everywhere not only reggae trust me. If you travel to other areas and Africa you hear it but reggae is probably the most popular for sure.I hate when us black people try to be so divisive with one another. It is pointless. Take reggaeton, for example, they took reggae and it's melodies and they bank on it, while you have a lot of Jamaican artist struggling financially; now seems like soca music is the next thing and they going to put a Daddy Yankee or some light skin looking Latino as the poster boy meanwhile not giving enough respect to the culture or country. I get what you saying but that is just a tiny way of looking at things. We live in a big world and sometimes we get caught up in our little box in which we think the rest of the world feels they way you feel, see the way you see or hear the way you hear. Bless bro..
Nope Pei no disrespect but the problem soca as is that its not the hippest music..its too plain...look at Dancehall for instance ...its more colorful..when u look at a Kartel or Alkaline, they got presence ..go look at Soca artist they dont got that star look...Soca is like country music and DANCEHALL is like hip hop.
tbh I'm a Jamaican and in Jamaica we rep our artists products and Jamaica and Trinidad are the two most talked about Caribbean islands. Trinidad produces soca and we Jamaicans produce our bread and butter reggae and dancehall even soca because we do have some artists that mixes it
Yes he is soo right. You must have different genres of music that relates to different mood, not just for festivities. Not everybody is happy or not everybody is sad. Creativity is critical....#from Jamaican🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Been a Bunji fan all my days but in all honesty I love my soca pure. Not really into too many of these soca fusions outside of the afro - soca ting. With that being said, can't knock any artist wanted to expand. All artist should be able to express as they please. I just skip pass what I don't like and stick to mi soca I love. Either way, Caribbean Massive, big up yuhself! 🇧🇸🙏
Best thing for the Caribbean is to support the caribbean, all the artistes and all the cultures. We too small to be divided. Those big countries/continents have the infrastructure to steal all our cultures and profit from it with no rewards or credit to us. The best thing for us is when we get out and own and support our cultures and each other. Right now my squad is carrying Soca and Dancehall music all across the world. Big up Youself Bunji! SOCA VIKING!
I personally agree with him all we do is just target one topic which is carnival which is not a bad thing but when carnival done until the next year it comes like we don't exist probably if we hit on other topics during the year maybe we would get more publicity
When it comes on to the Caribbean islands including the top two JAMAICA and TRINIDAD ,We look overseas for approval of our own music. The residue of colonialism still lingers. We want to dabble to feel accepted. eg, Shabba did Mr loverman with Deborah Glasgow on original reggae beat but when he was signed they remake the song with Chevelle franklin (RIP Deborah) to a RnB beat, which brew the thought that when our music is imported its better. sad look. We need our own Grand Caribbean Awards show. We shouldnt need a Grammy approval to think our music is the best. We are the spice of the World, Big ups to all Caribbean families
that's real talk i would luv to see a Caribbean Awards show done annually, obviously rotating to a different host island every yr. i don't know the politics of how or why something like that hasn't happened yet on a grand scale i rem when a was a kid they had something called the Shell Football Cup soccer tournament that involved all the islands, i don't even know what happened to it cuz i left the island early but i'm sure all my West Indian ppl would luv to see something like that go down, some friendly competition 1x a yr showing the different regional pride & give other artists we never would've heard of some shine on a larger scale ... ayo ONE LUV 2 ERRBODY IN BIM #246
I'm so happy that Shani called out Justin Bieber for hopping on a Soca-esque record (13:59), I've been saying that since the first time I heard 'Sorry'. Also glad that Bunji believes in the future of Soca music being viable to an international audience because he recognizes that some of its themes are similar to other successful genres like EDM and R&B (love, partying, etc). It's a little ironic that Bunji thinks Differentology is within the same group of internationally successful Soca/Calypso songs because it has a palatable, relatable theme exclusive of the Carnival undertones of most Soca songs because one of the main lines is "we ready for de road" which is a direct reference to Carnival Monday and Tuesday. I guess most people may miss that and enjoy the general party vibe of the song though. Great interview.
Kyle Papin only thing is that Soca not lose what makes it Soca. Right now it's so mixed, it's like EDM with a person with an accent, TBH. Reggae is reggae. Soca is growing but I think it might lose its definition trying to hard to get global. But also - reggae artists confront more topics than Soca artists. I've always been a bigger fan of reggae for that reason. That's my 3cents of black Yankee opinion lol
Big Up Bunji Garlin! He makes a great point about the Soca and Calypso music not being packaged by us, not making and writing our own content and not just making music for Carnival. We can do a lot more for the art! Smart guy! Always mad respect for him and the Queen Faye Ann!
It is sad to see how divisive black people are. This is why we losing. This is just simple conversation with two men talking about their country and how to make things better socially and musically and we here talking about who's better. I hope you people know this is a big world and what we think we know is just a tiny bit of the puzzle. I love all music, enjoy it. Most of the problem is a lot of people from the the Caribbean and especially in the US are very closed minded when it comes to music and only listen to what is popular but not a true fan of the art in music. We seeing it in hip-hop currently (mumble rap) but another note a lot of Caribbean countries don’t appreciate their own culture, so many countries in WI have their own music besides reggae and soca but mostly stick to reggae or Soca because it is the most popular. You guys can sit and argues who is the best blah blah in the meanwhile others are stealing your music and culture and become filthy rich from it, ask Daddy Yankee. We should be arguing how to protect the intellectual properties of the culture, so reggae artist, soca artist, and others can benefit and make money from it also. I remember many years ago a Haitian group sued and won a case against Carlos Santana because he sampled one of their melodies without authorization and thought maybe no one would notice. Let’s argue how are we going to protect the craft instead of arguing who is best? It is very unproductive. It be dope to see Africans, Caribbean, Black Americans artist do more calibrations together.
Im Jamaican and Trini.. My dad Jamaican and my moms from Trinidad.. I feel like reggae and dancehall both cover up every genre of music there is... like love songs, daggering, bod mon tunes.. every one has something to relate to like bunji said.. Trinidad i feel like has the sweetest melodies, they just have to use it in different ways other than carnival and pelting waist music.. I feel like Jamaicans are more lyrical with exception to some very lyrical soca artist, but soca has str8 feel good music and sweet melodies, just good vybz.. Its like you cant listen to a soca track and stand still yuh must move.. Another reason i think Jamaican music is more global is because of the icons from the island.. Bolt, Bob, weed lol people tend to gravitate to the culture in north America.. Also they think every island person is jamaican lol..
Everyone want soca to appease to international audience by changing the sound. If you change it it's not Soca anymore. If you don't want to listen to party music all the time then listen to Reggae or hip hop that's why we have different genres people.
I have to agree Bunji is well spoken and he flows effortlessly I also listened to him and Fay I'm impressed its refreshing to listen to him express his views keep going up and take Soca music higher Mr Lyrisis
Sometimes I just wanna make it big and put Trinidad , Grenada and other islands on the map . Because Nicki Minaj ain't doing it for Trinidad .. Rihanna and Tory Lanez ain't doing it for Barbados y'all some damn sells outs and when soca and other Caribbean music get on the map you gonna be mad you did rep your shit to begin with. Don't get me wrong I love dancehall and love Jamaicans as I love all my Caribbean people but damn rep our shit rep your own shit .. tell em bunji continue to put soca on the map! Yuh done kno !
Kim M I am Jamaican and sometime I wonder y Nicki minaj nuh rep soca a lot n riri n Tory lanez doh rep bajan a lot more....they always talking like Jamaican n sampling our music
Kim M look Trinidad James ain't had more than one hit, but the first hit he came with had the flag all in his video. Even his name is reppin. They migrate and just feel like people won't love them the same if they represent something other than America or something. Rihanna always in Barbados for cropover but don't rep it more smfh
Once again Mark Watson talking what he does not know. Calypso was before Reggae and Dancehall. Not Soca! Go do your research before embarrassing yourself again
I have been saying for years that Soca needs to expand its topics. Most Americans haven't heard of Caribbean Carnival, primarily Brazilian is what we're familiar with. Truck, section, road, ID, etc. So heavily focused on Carnival which means nothing to people who aren't familiar. What the heck is "get in your section" to someone who's never played Mas? #IJS I love Carnival, I've grown to enjoy Soca, but the limited topic of the genre is why I support reggae dancehall much more heavily for decades now. Much love to Bunji Garlin. Loved him for years, didn't know he was from T&T.
Me too, I was looking for dis comment. You see dat is big island talk. Talk like dat does keep us separated. Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica are not close. Lmao. The whole Caribbean between them, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Monsterrat, Saba, St. Eustacia (might be spelt wrong), St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Martin/St. Maarten, Guadeloupe, Martinique, BVI, USVI, St. Barths, Turks and Caicos, etc.....
CrushPartyIce 😂😂😂😂😂😂👉👉u funny 'good one though...you meant to say Trinis are the greatest hypocrites ...yall think yall better than the rest of the Caribbean,,thats why it kill yall tht Jamaica gets the hype and notoriety...Maybe if yall just relax and be yall self n cut the pretence ,,yall could be accepted ,but noooo, yall wanna play the rich country bullshit,WHEN THEIR IS NO SUCH THING AS A RICH 3rd WORLD COUNTRY😂😂😂..Thats why Jamaica will be accepted..we show our GHETTOs without shame...Thts why when ppl come jamaica they love it ,because our suburbs are the best but we dont show them...👍👍
Mark Watson you talking rel shit... Idk why the fuck Jamaicans always feel trini jealous them.... We don't give a fuck about Jamaica... N if you look sharp we support Jamaica n Jamaican music.. athletes everything maybe more than Jamaicans... So fuck off with da outta timin talk...
Mark Watson Who said we better than somebody??? same way people can come talk bout their "Jamaica" is the best, Trini's and bajans and vincys can do the same MUDDA CUNTTIN TING!!! ITS NATIONAL PRIDE! And hear you nah... coming on a page to advocate about Jamaica on a video interview involving a Trinidadian man! so who's REALLLLLLLLY the hypocrite. goodbye.
yeah man Bunji man i can feel u what u saying man bredda.... I myself commin from the Caribbean island Curacao, we is the same..... It feels like we not proud of our country...... We don't want to enrich the island make ppl wanna kno us
Orange Sky needs to be given accolades for the great music of differentology. Trinidadians do support the soca most artiste get their fame here before they become famous anywhere else. Performances in any part of the world are supported by Trinis in those parts of the world. Maybe cooperate Trinidad on the other hand could do more for the industry. They need to support our artistes much more. Wherever Trinis go they demand their soca. Remember our population is just 1.3, we can only do so much. We can't compare what's happened to Jamaica, Bob and Jimmy Cliff paved the way for them with their universal lyrics. We do need to shift the content period.
So even though they're living in the same country, they never met, but had to wait until they were both performing in another country to actually meet up?
Soca needs to not only be a carnival music but touch every topic that's how it will grow internationally Justin Bieber Chris brown drake are showing us that
I was looking for this comment 🤣 Trinidadians want soca for themselves. I knew this all alone LOL, and many don't give a bs about the world's opinion. 😁
I don't agree with Trini's not supporting soca... And don't put soca in the same bracket with sports and academics...Soca was stagnant for awhile with artiste singing the same thing every year no creativity only Machel was keeping the Soca flag flying high... And don't rate us Trini's to the Jamaicans, the Jamaicans from ever since always help a younger artiste and expose them into the industry til they buss and we see that with Kartel and Movado etc... The Soca industry is a "eat ah food industry"... Trinis love soca and we love good music...
So Caribbean community doesn't roll with you? Firstly soca is for the whole Caribbean and you are separating us by focusing only on Trinidad @bunjigarlin
No North American leaving the US to come and jump up to rap soca in hot sun. I am not jumping up to no rap music in no hot sun. I want to hear Machel, Kes, Blaxx, voice etc....soca music with melody that you could move your waist too... who the hell want to wine to Busta Rhymes....Bunji you f***king lost yes.
..as a Jamaican living in Trinidad, I love dancehall and soca. One Love!
I feel tht bunji Garlin as great as he is still doesn't get enough respect..but then again I'm a fan of his since 1999
He's talking facts it's crazy tho that he said us Jamaicans industry is built and good yet there's still a massive issue with the dancehall music industry and needed some fixing up too. The whole English speaking Caribbean need to sort out our music industry man so everyone else can't just use our music and culture and make millions while the ppl who really do it bruk
Bunji pretty much the most lyrical soca artist.

All Caribbean islands are like that we do not appreciate our own until, abroad shows that they value it!

Shaniqua Middleton yes it was but can't remember it being featured in a sound track for a movie
hello I'm from Trinidad and Tobago
Everyone want soca to appease to international audience by changing the sound. If you change it it's not Soca anymore. If you don't want to listen to party music all the time then listen to Reggae or hip hop that's why we have different genres people.

I always said soca artists need to change the content of their music if they want to go international.
Everyone feels that way Bunji
So St. Lucia is responsible for the biggest names in soca collaborating.
well said garlin.....
So even though they're living in the same country, they never met, but had to wait until they were both performing in another country to actually meet up?
americans always try to copy other countries music and claim it can't claim soca tho because is palanas for everybody
16:40 real talk, exactly my brudda. bahamians the same way all they do is sing bout party n drinking like bro i dont even party or drink!!
edm started in jamaica .... Research!
Thank You :)
do r&b artiste write their own songs ? bunji, well done
I have to disagree with Bunji here. I find Trini people are extremely proud of their own & will let you know it too!
Soca needs to not only be a carnival music but touch every topic that's how it will grow internationally Justin Bieber Chris brown drake are showing us that
jaj know dis bwoy yah baddd.
why does soca need to go mainstream?
Punta Kinte -- they need to be able to pay their bills so that they continue to give us great music! 🎶🎶🎶
Elisa Levy they seem to be doing quite well even if soca is not mainstream.
I was looking for this comment 🤣 Trinidadians want soca for themselves. I knew this all alone LOL, and many don't give a bs about the world's opinion. 😁
All U, AH WARNING ALL U PLEASE! SOCA GONE CRAZY CROSSOVER STYLEE, THIS TIME SOCA GONE POP, SOCA WENT. HIP HOP, SOCA GONE. ROCK
Soca General......
Trinis love soca and we love good music...
so machel montano m.o.r wasn't a hit?..dat song won the same award as his song
🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
ain't that the truth!..we dont support our own😖😖
So Caribbean community doesn't roll with you? Firstly soca is for the whole Caribbean and you are separating us by focusing only on Trinidad @bunjigarlin
What if a Trini does not like Soca?
No North American leaving the US to come and jump up to rap soca in hot sun. I am not jumping up to no rap music in no hot sun. I want to hear Machel, Kes, Blaxx, voice etc....soca music with melody that you could move your waist too... who the hell want to wine to Busta Rhymes....Bunji you f***king lost yes.
