- This is for those of you with outside of the boot fetish - 9 minutes of Franz Beckenbauer playing trivela passes & shooting with the outside of his boot. This is just a small sample but it should be enough to highlight his extreme technical excellence.
I remember on the time before the net and UA-cam, it took me almost six weeks to get the 1974 WC Final on VHS. Sending mail to the collectors ads in World Soccer and Match magazines, then getting their list, then sending another mail with money order, then wait till they send me the VHS videos that I requested. I am from Saudi Arabia, so sending and getting mail takes a while. Finally, I was SO eager to watch the orange magic and whatever I read and hear about Cruyff. I ended up loving Beckenbauer, watched the game more than a time, just to enjoy his neat elegant passes with the outside of his foot. I always enjoy midfielders and strikers. Well, Franz was more of a midfielder to me. On the later years, and till now, I always look for the old classic German games, just to enjoy those passes from Franz.

There have been many very, very good defenders, like Maldini, Cafù or Lahm. Beckenbauer was still a step ahead of them, through his combination of defensive quality, symbol of elegance and importance as a team leader.
He was the best German Soccer Player ever. He became World Champion as a Player and Coach!

OMG! When I was a kid , I knew the name Pele, Socrates, Beckenbauer, Garrincha, Eusébio... from magazine and PC games. But never had the chance to watch they play. And today I know why he is a legend. R.I.P, the Emperor of football.

The most important thing is a fantastic vision of the field and an accurate pass for 40-50 meters.
The reason for Beckenbauer using only the outside of his right foot is explained in his own diary: He has written unlike most people, his feet are positioned inward instead of outward, so it is the natural inward condition of his feet that makes him to shoot the ball that way. Whereas a player like Cruyff was able to use both his feet to do that while having (I assume) his feet in outward condition like most, if not all people.

It makes sense a lot of the passes in this clip and others have seen could have apparantly been made more simplely in convectional way.. I thought it was typical german arrogance, lol.

I'm Scottish and I just love the Kaiser, he played football as if it was the most natural thing to do. He made playing football look as if it was just a past time.

His use of the outside of the foot has become so typical that until today whenever a German defender of some quality tends to play the ball that way over fourty meters - like Matthias Herget or Mats Hummels - you can be sure he will be nicknamed the „new Franz Beckenbauer“ by the press.

His unique style of long passes was puzzling until I realized that he got his foot under the ball and almost dropped it in front of his teammate (instead of kicking it). This made it so easy for his teammate to receive the ball and run with it.
I tried to imitate his style but was never successful.

Cruyff all day long. He did trivela with BOTH feet. In fact, Cruyff is my GOAT passer of the ball. Passes bent & whipped in at bizarre, Pythagoras geometrical angles.

Saw the Kaiser in '83 when he returned to the Cosmos playing home games on the turf at Giants Stadium..He always was so sure about where the ball was supposed to go he looked like he moved in slow motion ...watching these clips I never remembered him moving so quickly

For him it wasn't easier since using the outside of his right boot to him was like a second nature. He did use his left often enough though, he wasn't as predominantly one-footed player as, say, Maradona.

He was the cheat that cost Leeds United the European Cup.
His tackle on Alan Clarke definitely deserved a penalty for Leeds, but that is not cheating. The referee was very close to the scene; how could he miss such an obvious penalty is mind boggling. If you mean Beckenbauer cheated on Lorimer's disallowed goal; all he did was raising his hand (I think the linesman called it offside), like most players do when a decision goes against their team. If you want to criticize Beckenbauer, do it for his objection to Jack Taylor in awarding Holland a deserved penalty in 74 final, when he told Taylor: "You are an Englishman"!! What does that have to do with the legitimacy of a penalty?!!! If his point was because W. Germany had eliminated England from 70 W. Cup and Euro 72, that is a very sick justification for objecting a valid penalty call. I am a Leeds fan, and don't think Lorimer's goal was offside, If I remember correctly, Billy Bremner was pushed back, and he didn't interfere with the direction of Lorimer's shot. Some say he blocked Sepp Meier's vision; that is very subjective, and there is no camera view from the back of the goal to prove that was the case.

Because of his stature in the game he was well known for influencing referees. Leeds were dealt with very unfairly and the crooked Kaisee had a grubby hand in it. Therefore I feel I must agree to disagree with you there.

Look at the tape: Initially, the linesman is not visible, then it looks like Beckenbauer looks at linesman's direction and then and only then after realizing the linesman is calling for offside, he raised his hand and did it calmly because the linesman had already ruled in favor of Bayern. It is not that Beckenbauer ran the field, confronted the ref and argued with him and made the ref to invalidate Lorimer's goal. Is raising a hand enough to change the mind of a referee, no matter how great your stature is in the game? No. Beckenbauer insulted Jack Taylor by calling him " You are an Englishman". Did Taylor change his mind because of Beckenbauer's stature in the game?! No, you can see that Taylor reached his pocket, and was about to take out the yellow card for Beckenbauer if he was going to keep talking non sense. Maradona in 86 final had even a greater stature in the game than Beckenbauer did in 74: Over a free kick against Argentina, the ref ordered the free kick to be taken again, because to the best of my recollection, an Argentine player had moved forward before the ref's whistle. What was ref's reaction to Maradona's protest? He showed him a yellow card. I understand your frustration, because like any Leeds fan, we knew 75 final was the last chance for aging Leeds players to win the ultimate prize, but we have to be fair and point to the incompetent French ref and his linesman for Leeds loss. The same incompetent ref had to sent off Terry Urath's awful foul on Anderson (Bayern's Swedish player If I remember his name correctly) which broke his leg or ankle but he didn't; I don't remember he even gave Urath a yellow card (I might be wrong). Then Leeds had to play 10 against 11 from about the 10-th minute of the game, but no Leeds fan points to that injustice against Bayern. Overall Leeds was much better than Bayern and deserved to win the final.
