As you know I too live in Southern California. You wouldn't think humidity would be an issue for us. I live a couple of miles from the ocean so I never thought it got too dry. 2 years ago I decided monitor the humidity in my house and for the most part of the year, it was fine, but I was shocked to see that in the mild California winters, the humidity dropped down to the low 20's! You know of my high end uses so I can't risk them going too low. (Right now the relative humidity is reading 20% in my room and 30% outside--so I keep my solid ukes in their cases with the hydro packs). I don't really like the Oasis, as I worried about the leakage, and also it would sometimes dry up before I checked them again. I use either the Boveda or the D'Addario, and I seem to get longer results and better results with D'Addario (based on the hygrometers). For the most part, each pack lasts about 3 months, sometimes more, during the spring and summer. This winter it's been a very dry season, and even with the hydro packs a couple of my ukuleles in their cases have trouble getting above 40% relative humidity with the in-case hygrometers, and I've had packs get dry in 2-3 weeks! (particularly the Boveda) I'm even using 2 or 3 of the regular size packs in two of my ukulele cases.
You know I love Kanile'a, and the Souza Ohana, and I love Pepe Romero, Jr as well, but you hit it on the head. I've noticed the frets are more sensitive to humidity in those two brands as well. That's why I keep bluetooth or wifi hygrometers in those cases to keep close eyes on them.

Hello TC and Ultp community ! For sure a humidifier is necessary ! But in my case i need most of the time a de-humidifier (hot and very wet tropical climate 6 months a year), so i’m happy to have discovered through your channel the Boveda ones, wich i use now in each case of my instruments... Not very confident however to put them between strings and table of the instrument or into it. Before i was using Oasis but it’s only dehumidifier so... Aloha !
PS : love this fingerpicking piece "Forbidden road", quite easy, with this so nice ending !

I just ordered two Boveda humidifiers from your store. Nice price! Thank you for teaching us how to care for our instrument(s).

I’ve been using the oasis, but here in Colorado they need to be filled weekly and I forget. Also, what a pain in the neck to replace those crystals! I’m excited about the Boveda- order coming your way!

If I have small Boveda packs, very small ones. Could I put one in my uke? I mean just pop it in and leave it there, it is so small or do they need to be a certain size and does it have to be 49%, would it make a difference?
I have never even thought of humidifying my ukulele or any other protective measures like that.

Proper humidity levels are critical for acoustic instrument health. I live in a very low humidity area and struggle to keep my instruments at proper humidity. I've had tops crack on a couple of instruments (spruce, each time) from low humidity.. Also, dry instruments tend to have sharp fret ends due to shrinkage of the wood. I use 2 whole house console humidifiers, one in the room where the instruments are stored, and one right outside the door. This works for me due to the large number of instruments I need to protect. If you have few instruments, case humidifiers work well, IN MY OPINION: ONLY IN HARD CASES. Yes, I had an instrument crack in a soft case with a viable Boveda 49% in the summer in a basement with 30% humidity.

Can you use both at the same time? Or is that silly? I’m just not sure if the Boveda is enough for north Texas Weather 🤷🏻‍♀️

what if I live in a dry area and I haven't used a humidifier in a year, is my ukulele premaritally ruined or will getting a humidifier fix it if it's a bit off?

Hi, I just bought a brand new Cordoba 15CM from Sweetwater, but even though it is a new ukulele, it came with sharp frets on the lower area of the fingerboard, and the Pau ferro wood fretboard looks so dry. What do you recommend me to do? I am considering to buy a Boveda 49% two way humidifier, but, do you recommend me to buy two pieces, or just one, and in which parts of the instrument should I put them on? Thank you :)

Learning the hard way…I have a Kanile’a that I’ve taken around the world with me. Been on a dozen flights in the last three months. Also drove it around the Southwest US this summer in record-breaking heat. Uke has gone from extreme dry heat to the humidity of Thailand and India, back to extreme dry heat of Dubai. Now I’m in reasonable climate of Europe. Didn’t know any better, so no humidifier and never loosened strings while traveling. Problem now is that strings are popping out, knots still intact and bridge pins still intact. I’ve tried bigger knots, to no avail. Now going to try and use beads on the ends of strings as well as try to find some Boveda humidifiers. The uke doesn’t appear cracked or otherwise damaged, so hoping it’s not too late to rectify. Would welcome any further tips.

When you float a humidifier in the sound hole, how does it help the wood on the neck if its not in a case?

I live in Florida, so a humidifer might not be a huge necessity. It’s humid enough as is over here.

My $50 Aklot is one of my favorite ones. I don't want anything to happen to it. Once I got different strings and now, how it sounds with some age. I'm definitely taking care of it regardless of it's cheapness.
