This clip is from QI Series I, Episode 16, 'Ice' with Stephen Fry, Alan Davies, Brian Blessed, Sean Lock and Ross Noble.
As an Icelander I'd like to point out that Alan sounded more correct in his pronunciation than Stephen.
könnuður Yeah, he garbled that quite bad.
Stephen's problem was he couldn't properly interpret the "phonetic" version he had in front of him ..
How close was sean?
@@jake-amirblumenfeldwitz6068 Kinda close. There a place in the south of Iceland called Höfn, which lots of tourists just sort of read out. But the umlaut changes the o from the vowel sound on gnaw to the u in hut, and the fn is a diphthong pronounced p, so the name really is Hup, like a mini hiccup.
Can I check what I think the pronunciation is?
From memory, it's Ay (like pay, not Aye as Stephen said) ya fiat (kinda like the car) la yuh kootl.
Brian blessed saying "Shag Nasty" is one of the greatest things ever
Agreed, I lost it at that.
I could watch Brian Blessed do absolutely anything .
I could watch him do absolutely nothing and I'd still be entertained.
vasp99 The man's a British institution...and some say he belongs in one.
vasp99 He's the anti-Attenborough. Equally epic, just for etc...
It'd watch him do all of Europe.
I'd listen to him read off the menu in a fancy restaurant.
Brian Blessed has one of the finest voices in audio recorded history.
DIIIIIIIIVE!
Brian Blessed is Gimli's tall estranged cousin
That, or he's Tom Bombadil
Stefanos Ziomas so accurate!
Interestingly, John Rhys-Davies who played Gimli is pretty tall himself, at 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m).
Jessica Lee if Amazon doesn't try to cast him it's a crime
Jessica Lee - Brian Blessed IS Tom Bombadil. He's the living incarnation of Tom Bombadil. It would really be an enormously missed opportunity if the studios and director that produced and made the LOTR and The Hobbit won't make a sequel focusing on Tom Bombadil with Brian Blessed in the title role.
I’d like to point out I didn’t even read the title of this video, I just saw Blessed with his mouth wide open in the preview and knew I had to click on it
The fact that the real answer and Brian’s answer both make total sense, makes it 30 times better.
I think it makes it 26 times better. We agree to disagree I suppose.
2:33
Brian Blessed summons Cthulhu
Who hath summoned the almighty one?
The loud one, sire
No one, the almighty one is just screaming for his pet squid to wake the fuck up.
I like how Brian Blessed is such a decent and humble character. So mellow and endearing
Alan: Aya-fyala-yokul
Ross: Eeja-fyally-jockrel
Brian: EE-AYE-JAF-JALAAH, JOE COOL!!!
Sean: ij-
The umlaut changed it
Brian Blessed's voice is exactly the same as I always imagined it would be.
You mean BRIAN BLESSED.
He's not wrong, volcanic ash makes very good fertilizer
Which is why there were farms so from Pompeii so close to Vesuvius. But of course, there's the downside of building right next to an active volcano.
@@almostfm what down side?
@@Omar_ayach You know-a volcanic eruption that buries the town and kills everyone in it.
@@almostfm meh minor inconvenience
But there's no way reduced species like ammonia Is coming from a volcano
The way Brian blessed said orgasm is hilarious
Shaboom-shazaam, it's an orgazzam!
I wonder if that’s what Brian says in bed 😆
I'd like to see Brian blessed shout at eggs until there scrambled?
Just Joeing Around why is this a question
Lowry because I want answers
I am Dave! Yognau(gh)t and I have the balls!
That's a 2-second video.
SCRAMMMMMMMBBLLLLEEEED
Can there be anyone more epic than Brian Blessed?
The answer is none. None more epic.
I love how Brian literally screamed nonsense and got a round of applause
Replace Brian with 'Trump' and that pretty much describes Trump rally audiences 2016-2022...
I understand what he was trying to say.
I recently got the 25th anniversary DVD of Flash Gordon just so I could hear Brian's audio commentary, it's a piece of art.
That commentary is one of the finest things ever. Just for all the points he talks about how Flash Gordon is better than Superman due to the relative number of flying people in each movie.
@@lorcannagle I assume you can't use headphones with it though because you'll never hear again
It really is one of the best and most entertaining audio commentaries ever recorded.
Brian truly loves the film, as do I.
“Isn’t that a great shot?! Look at that! Marvelous!”
This episode looks like it’s filmed with people from the Lord Of the Rings.
Funny you should say this, Guillermo del Toro's first pick to play Thorin was Brian Blessed :D (but then P. Jackson took over the project)
Sublime Trickaz The world was ROBBED
They should let Del Toro make it again. I think we're all prepared to forget the Peter Jackson trilogy.
@@TathD I hope you mean the "other" trilogy
@@SublimeTrickaz He should play Tom Bombadil, if they ever make a movie about him…
Brian blessed is such a blessing to humanity.
BRIAN BLESSED!!!
Well, in the panel's defence, Fry' didn't really get"Eyjafjallajökull" right either :/
He did not a good job at all the time next year he said that the next week would work
@slyther_ro ay-ah-fyad-la-yo-kud-L
Far from it, as well. Alan got it pretty much spot on.
Brian Blessed really enjoys being Brian Blessed.
Well if you were Brian wouldn't you enjoy being him? I know I would!
Brian Blessed brings me immense joy
Brian Blessed has a beard to hide the fact that his mouth is actually 11 inches in diameter
I remember this comment once in a while and laugh every single time.
Imagine if Brian Blessed's answer got klaxon'd and appeared on the screen word-for-word. That'd be a _blessing_ .
Brian Blessed is Hilarious! Talk shows, special appearances, interviews... He is such wonderful man to listen to!
Brian Blessed is such a magnificent specimen!
I want children's bedtime audio book narrated by Brian Blessed. Hahahah
I came on UA-cam to find a particular video, but forgot what it was the moment I opened the app. I'm so glad I did though because otherwise I never would've watched this.
Where's Sandi when you need her to pronounce something xD
Isn't she of Danish descent?
As a Dane, I don't think I'd get much closer to the correct pronunciation than the panelists. Icelandic is almost Old Norse.
Jacob Andersen Really? I mean as a Swede, I think I might be able to pronounce it, given I heard the correct pronounciation at first, and I thought that you danes at least had a better chance of pronouncing than the englishspeaking
Maybe better than the English, but the only reason I have any clue how to say it is because I saw a video on UA-cam about how to say it. That "tl" sort of sound they say for the double l's is unlike anything you'd ever end a word with in Danish.
+Infernova sv.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyjafjallajökull
Tror inte att en svensk hade uttalat det så.
Näää. Men nu när jag hört rätt uttal borde jag kunna replikera ljudet helt ok
I really do think this is Stephen's definitive QI outfit.
God damn I love Brian Blessed.
If you have ever seen Brian Blessed In Blackadder the first series; or in Doctor Who The Trial of a Time Lord, or as King Hamlet ghost? You know that he is a fantastically fabulous actor
My favourite performance of his is in "I, Claudius". Of course Derek Jacobi is brilliant but so is BB.
@@lilymarinovic1644 he has some fantastic stage and on camera presence. With his huge size and loud voice ah a very powerful performance is expected.
The best pronunciation of 'orgasm' ever uttered by man.
Brian Blessed was on QI! Must watch the rest of the episode this instant!
Call up the episode on Have I Got News For You when he's the guest host. Hilarious.
dunno how old this is but brian blessed was born in 1936. what a boss
Brian Blessed IS The Most Interesting Man in the World
Anything and everything that ever comes out of Brian Blessed's mouth is hilarious and interesting in equal measure. I could no joke watch him eat a sandwich and I'd be in awe.
I so regret not discovering the wonderfulness that is Brian Blessed much sooner. Even his name is cool. He’s huge, very funny, and his extreme loudness only adds to his humor. I know this episode is a bit dated, but I can’t believe how great he looks for his age as well. No way would I have thought he was in his mid 80’s.
You have missed out! First discovered Brian Blessed (if memory serves) in the 80s through his wonderful comic turn in the first series of 'Blackadder', and love his dramatic role as the Emperor Augustus in "I, Claudius"
It's never too late to discover BRIAN BLESSED.
God Bless the voice of Blessed
2:33
Don't mind me, just leaving a personal timestamp.
Headphone users: turn down your sound.
Alan is spot on.
Yes, almost. He's still missing the "LL" where your tongue is rolled back so it sounds like a speech defect to English ears.
I love Brian’s answer!
God bless Brian Blessed
Why would you want a fictional character to perform a made up childish irrelevant demeaning ritual to Brian? Do you not like Brian Blessed. I know he can be a bit imposing, but for the most part he's only in it (life) for the fun and adventure of life.
I always love when Santa Claus does these talk/game show things
1:32 Actually... the largest empire the world has ever seen is in fact the British Empire.
think he means contiguous empire
You've heard of the dial going to 11?
Brian Blessed broke the dial off.
I thought I recognized Blessed's voice.
Blessed went full star wars episode one XD
OMG i love Brian Blessed :D. he is what Santa would look like if he were real :)
Why has it never occurred to me before that Sean sounds exactly like Michael Caine
The British empire was bigger size wise, mongol empire was biggest land empire interconnected
Stephen was saying at the time it was the largest.
And by one ruler. I believe. Alexander and genghis.
Stephen said largest empire the world has ever seen, meaning all time, which is incorrect as stated by the op.
The British Empire was populated and buzzing with activity, 99% of the Mongol Empire was just a barren uninhabitable wasteland with no beneficial gains worth speaking about.
@@WarfightersWorkshop What about Canada?
Brian Blessed and Stephen Fry in one room? Consider my pants volcanoed.
they didn't have that one queued for the klaxon!
oh my god this thumbnail
Blessed be Brian Blessed.
I wish Brian would be on QI more often.
clicked merely to listen to Brian Blessed go off....
Ok but seriously Brian's answer was actually really intelligent.
Brian’s wearing the same outfit as he did on HIGNFY and Fry’s Planet Word when he stuck his hand in ice water and shouted BOLLOCKS over and over.
Brian is amazing
Brian Blessed is wonderful in this clip.
'Brian Blessed is wonderful -in this clip- '
Brian Blessed and Sean Lock. Has there ever been a better pairing on QI?
I love that clip where BB kind of accidentally wrestles Sean to the ground... 😆
It's more like "Eyyaf-yatla-yokutl" - the Icelandic "LL" being similar to the Welsh "LL" but a bit harder because they're vikings. AND more like "Cheng-gis Han" - with a more forceful "H" but not quite to the level "KH" is usually pronounced by English speakers - it's not a K, it's a forceful H.
Jessica Lee welsh ll is is more like an s
Brian Blessed pronouncing Eyjafjallajökull. I've died and gone to heaven.
The legend!
I can't watch this without thinking of Black Adder.
I'd like to see a flat share sitcom with Brian Blessed and Richard Ayoade
"big smokey bastard"..... i now want to see a ross noble dub of a foreign fantasy movie
I've been to that volcano!
Iceland, just with Brian's pronunciation. It's for the best.
As a Finn I don't know Icelandic, but at least I know Swedish and my umlauts. The difficult part here is the double-"l" in "jalla" which for some odd reason is pronounced "jatla" and the last double-l which for some odd reason is pronounced "lth" instead of just ending with a soft "lllll".
Brian Blessed is awesome
pronunciation got murdered by everyone though
theawesomesausage
Alan was actually quite close.
Those double l’s becoming spitty T’s is hard.
A good way to sound something like that out is to work backwards
-kull
-jökull
-jallajökull
-jafjallajökull
Eyjafjallajökull.
Where are any of the full episodes?
Brian is hilarious.
Ahh i love brian.
I swear Brian Blessed's mouth is digitally enhanced in that thumbnail.
It's actually not that hard to pronounce if you hear it.
Does Brian Blessed have an inside voice?
wrong pronunciation by steven
it's actually "Chinggis" if you wanna get pedantic.
Not in English, it isn't!
Yeah, in poor authoritative English pronunciation of Mongolian, you're right. Not the kind of right I prefer, but right.
The bloke's called Genghis Khan in English.
I doubt he's called that in Mongolian. Especially modern-day Mongolian, which will sound nothing like the Mongolian of Khan's day.
I doubt 'Mongolian' is called 'Mongolian' in Mongolian, either.
yeah, Alan's second attempt was better.
It’s an ancestor to half of all humans?
Brian Blessed is the man I want to be.
Alan Davis was closest to the proper way of saying it.
it means island mountain glacier
Where does Stephen get an extra k from
Brian has eyebrows from the 50s
The halcyon days when the clips ended with silence.
2:34
No more needs be said.
It's a war crime Brian Blessed wasn't in Skyrim, he would be amazing as Ulfric. It would actually be believable he shouted the High King to pieces.
You can take Brian Blessed and put him with vikings and druids in the stone/bronze age era and he'd still be relevant
He's actually from the time period. Death has been too afraid to take him.
2:33
LaGuerre19 ME TIE DOUGHTY WALKER
As somebody from Britain I wanna point out I’m pretty sure the largest empire the word has ever seen was the British empire
Yep. Except the british empire was only possible due to advances in transportation and communications. The mongol empire was the largest continuous land empire ever. At a time when the most advanced form of communication was horse messages. Suddenly the empire is far more impressive.
He compares it to the Roman and Macedonian empires so I assume he's saying "had ever seen" which obviously is up to that point in time.
2:33 Jabba the hutt
Ey-la-fath-la-yo-kul-a...is this correct?
Gordon's alive!
Unusual names.
That motherfuckin volcano stopped Lewandowski coming to Blackburn Rover 😭😭😭😭😭😭
What a shame that Stephen mispronounced it
That's not a picture of Genghis Khan, is it? I remember having seen it before. This warrior looks more Seljuq or Ottoman to me. Can anyone specify?
I agree, it doesn't look very Mongol. The hat looks especially not Mongolian. Then again, I base my assumptions off of Civilization 5 :D vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/civilization/images/5/51/Genghis_Khan_%28Civ5%29.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150919120314
The Mongols did at one point control the entire Silk Road so it wouldn't be out of the question.
