How To Fail Your Characters - Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

- Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was a film that I had high hopes for, and as much as I wanted it to be great, it turned out to be one of the worst films I've ever seen. Everything from narrative contrivances, to incoherent plot points, this was a bloody mess. In this video I bring up something that I find not enough people have properly done: discussing the pisspoor characterization.

The best thing about dial of destiny is that finally Crystal Skull is being viewed more closely , not as a failure but as a solid edition to the franchise . Campy? Sure? Out there? Definitely. Horrible? Compared to this dumpster fire? Nah I’ll take aliens over this anyway
Seems weird to have a nazi mechanic/chief guard-esque character and not have a fight scene between him and Indy. What's the point between having him in the film.
What's the point at all with this film
Somehow big studios forgot how to write actual people instead of just icons or archetypes
It’s remarkable how easy it is to write a logically driven character arc, yet they always drop the ball 😂
The gunshot to the chest was the most ridiculous part of this film for me. It’s insane how it wouldn’t even be that hard to build a semi-decent story, but Hollywood execs instead insist on making all the wrong decisions with anything and everything they get their hands on.
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull isn’t a good movie, but at least it’s not an actual abomination. Dial of Destiny was an embarrassment of the highest degree.
@@TheSEAempireDial of Destiny makes me have some minor respect for what like the first half of crystal skull
@@TheSEAempireminus the nuke thr fridge scene of course
"Indiana Jones and the Waste of My Time" -Shiney FX 2023
Great video. I LOVE Indiana Jones 1-3, and I even like 4 too. Dial of destiny was a huge disappointment for me too. Just didn’t feel like an indiana jones movie to me. Mangold is a great director in his own right, but he is too dark and serious for Indy. The Spielberg & Lucas charm was definitely missing here. Crystal skull was honestly a much better movie. The original trilogy is almost perfect
How the fuck they wasted Antonio Banderas on that way?!
I never realized that the villain's plan was stupid on principle, I kinda got sucked into the movie, maybe because deep down I wanted it to be a good movie cuz im a big Indiana Jones fan, but you're right, whole plan's stupid.
U and me both
This movie some how made Indiana Jones as a character boring and pathetic, and somehow made the villain boring and pathetic....waste of 2 great actors if u ask me, and Disney and KK tried they're hardest to give all the everything to Helena, a character no one will care for or love
I’m surprised they didn’t bring in communists as the next villains after Nazis as the fifties and sixties had many adventure films with Communists as villains. Downright strange that the KGB didn’t bat an eye towards Miss Spalkos disappearance and the Skull expeditions failure.
When I saw this video, I was concerned that this might be a politically charged debate with "This film is 'woke'..." arguments. It's nice to see people who can look past politics and appreciate the bigger picture. Also, this video/rant is very well-crafted and well-thought-out.
Funny timeline we live in, where old franchises get new modern things and one of the few good ones is freaking Top Gun?
First one isn't bad but it isn't a timeless classic
Maybe studios will take note how it earned a billion out of nowhere
I see a simple solution to this: stop recognizing it as canon. The fans have more power than the studio. Period. If the fans all disregard it as nothing but a money grab by a stupid cash hungry company than it has no effect on the past 4
great video is it ok if I ask you a question
Yes of course
Helena is the most insufferable character in the Indiana Jones franchise
Btw wanna hear my issues with the film?
Sure.
@TheSEAempire well firstly just want to get this out of the way I have a website where I post reviews I have review on the film wanna check it out? And secondly
1. They butchered the character of Indiana Jones
2. The villain was boring
3. The plot was a mess
4. Didn't have a happy ending
5. The whole time traveling thing was horrible
@@TheSEAempire?
You mentioned that Indiana is a passive protagonist in this film, not really contributing to the events of this narrative. And while I agree, couldn’t you make the case that in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the same thing could be said? The movie would play out almost identically in Indiana was not in it
Well that argument works for the story of if the Nazis get the Ark or not, but that’s not really the plot of Raiders. The story of Raiders is Indy being sent on a mission, and through that being forced to reconnect with an old lover of his and having to grow as a person. He went from only going back to her for the purposes of getting her medallion, to threatening to blow up the Ark in exchange for her freedom. At the end, Indy learned to put his faith in the Ark, and walked away having changed completely. Meanwhile here, he’s rewarded at the end while having learned nothing. He starts the film miserable about his life, stays miserable, ends the film miserable and trying to stay back in time, and then somehow Marion comes back and he’s happy again through the actions of another character that don’t make sense in their own right.
@@TheSEAempire That's fair. I was viewing the passiveness from the perspective of the physical events of the film and less so about character arcs, which I think can be viewed separately from what I would call the "plot" of a movie. But if we're running with concept of the plot of the film being inseparable from character arcs (which I can see the argument for ), then I totally agree with you that Raiders doesn't fall into this trap, and that DOD does
Bro cooked 🔥
You just love the sound of you own voice.
Yes. And?
One of the only reasons why I decided not to go was because Kathleen Kennedy was involved. I know that I shouldn't involve production issues, but my god, she's made a huge negative impact in the filming industry. The moment I saw the final trailer, I immediately decided not to see it in theaters, and how right I was, because some of the female characters r social justice warriors, toxic feminists (like KK), and have no shame in making fun of an old man trying to stop nazis. Instead of watching this movie, I just watched Raiders of the Lost Ark. I refuse to see this movie unless it's in a third party. Highly recommend to not watch it. Kathleen ruined Indiana Jones, just like she did with Star Wars.
Do you prefer KOTCS?
Oh easily. It’s not a good film but it’s better than Dial of Destiny, and personally I subjectively think it’s a great ending for Indy and his family.
Crystal Skull is definitely a better movie in almost every way
@@TheSEAempirecan’t argue with this, I also thought Crystal Skull was silly but the ending wraps up Indy’s arc perfectly
I love raiders, temple and crusades, i like crystal skull and dial of destiny.
