What I've come to appreciate is that while Indy experiences character growth throughout the films, it is not linear character growth... He falls back into his old habbits, like most people do. While Indy at the end of the Last Crusade is a much better person than he was at the beginning of Temple of Doom, he's still a guy who just left the woman of his life because he was scared of commitment. Even his father reverts back to his old ways after he calls Indy Indiana. That's clever writing. The irony of archaeologists who fails to truly learn from his past. That's history in a nutshell.
It's honestly really sad. The hate started 2 years ago, before it was even filmed. It clearly shows the people already made up their mind on this movie way before release.
I want with my dad and my sister and he actually saw raiders in cinema back then. It was really wholesome to see how excited he was about the movie and how he enjoyed it 😊 He even said he had to see it again. This is all that matters to me.
“What did you find Dad?” “Illumination” What a wholesome story to read. I went to see this with my Dad as well, 15 years after seeing Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in the theatre together. The greatest childhood memories I have of my Dad honestly is him introducing these films and many more to me as a kid. Always had a deep admiration for the magic of films and story telling. (Helped that he majored in film making)
I heard that there was a deleted scene where Indiana Jones sneaks into his ex-wife's house and plays with himself while hiding in her closet watching her have sex with the man she got remarried to after she had an affair with him. I'm sure your dad would have loved it.
Blame the budget. While I ultimately don't care what movies cost and make, there is no denying these budgets lately are insane. This film should not have cost $300 million. It just shouldn't have. That's crazy. If it was made for $150 million we would already be seeing profit. People who cheer on the success or failure of a film, who yell the loudest about B.O. takes and budgets, are always the most ill informed of the bunch. In no world with responsible Hollywood budgeting would a film that made over $200 million in a week be seen as a flop. But because Hollywood gonna Hollywood, that is now the reality we live in.

I hope this movie gets rediscovered by audiences in the future and gets the love it deserves. The more times I rewatch it, the more I grow to appreciate what it's doing thematically. Raiders was fun, Temple was dark, Crusade was warm and sweet, Crystal Skull was goofy, and Dial is melancholic. Each movie in the franchise has it's own quality, but more often than not it gets hated on for not being Raiders. As someone who loves themes of family, redemption and loss, this one is increasingly growing to become one of my favorites up there with Last Crusade.
I don’t think anything gets rediscovered anymore. The tsunami of content makes it almost impossible to be seen in the first place let alone rediscovered.
It will be more difficult to discover movies especially older movies as ever year more and more movies get made. However, being connected to Raiders will make the movie easier to find.
I didn't find this movie melancholic. At first, yes, but Indy quickly gets drawn into action again, realizes he's still needed, and the melancholy dissipates.
I genuinely loved the movie. I waited 15 years and I was satisfied. To me It may not be the best Indy movie, but its not even close to the worst and thats all I wanted.
I went for an Indy movie and an Indy movie is what I got, the opening scene was incredible and some of my favourite Indy action, and the finale was great and felt like how a modern indy film should be, a sensible use of cgi. An incredible last film that won’t be left from the rewatches!
As a Spielberg nerd, his visual language is very noticeably missing. But that doesn't make Dial bad or poorly made. This is one of the only mega studio films/legacy sequel recently that feels like it comes from a place of genuine care for the characters and story - a true sense of creative honesty. I went in simply expecting a bunch of easy fanservice and callbacks and modern franchise gimmicks but didn't get any. It's just...a story. An ending. What little overt fan service there is is either very minor or earned through being filtered through the film's themes and arcs. I'm not one of those jaded film nerds who openly just hates and balks at anything fan servicey. I'm a fan, service me. But there is way to lampshade it and make it work and a way that just feels cheap and easy. I wasn't aware of just how rote fan service has felt for me until this film made me perk up with how..."traditional" for the lack of a better term, the narrative approach was. I can sit here and whine about CGI here, green screen there, like every other nerd on twitter who wants to act like modern film is all soulless garbage, but I won't because the film is damn good and those small issues are just that - small issues. The more I sit with Dial the more I love it. As someone who is Spielberg pilled I will always kinda miss his supernatural gift for composition, blocking, and action directing, but it's just a thing we have to get over. And like I said, his absence doesn't mean Dial is suddenly of poor quality. Mangold did the work and it shows.
we all love Spielberg - but i can't believe how bad some of his editing is in the series. e.g..Indy going to get crushed by a wheel...14 seconds - later he's still in the same position. also, a lot of dummies on show in 1-3. are we actually overrating him?
I like to believe that while I enjoy nostalgia, I'm not going to be blinded by it to make up an imaginary high horse where everything I had during my childhood was awesome, and that there is absolutely zero value in anything being released now. Kingdom of the Crystal skull bored me to death back then as it still does right now, I still don't think the Star Wars prequels are good even though I grew up when they were being released, I don't think there was a good Fox X-Men movie until First Class, the more I think about Return of the Jedi the more I think the film would have been a better conclusion if Kurtz had stuck around to refine some of Lucas's ideas, I think The Batman is better than any past live-action Batman movie ever made, and even though I grew up with the Mike Young He-Man reboot, I think the Dreamworks She-Ra reboot is without a doubt the best Masters of the Universe series ever made, and Revelation is in second place. It's called survivor bias. As much as reactionaries deny it, past decades also grew up with crap. Mystery Science Theater 3000, perhaps the most iconic show of the nineties, was all about some comedians making fun of terrible movies, almost all of which were from the forties to the eighties. And they got ten seasons out of it. And I like to say I would gladly take ten Terminator Genisys's, ten Rise of Skywalkers, or ten Jurassic World: Dominions, in order to get just one The Last Jedi, Matrix Ressurrections, or Dial of Destiny. Seen it three times, and I can tell every second of Indiana 5 was made with love, care, and a strife to do the best they could with the story of a classic hero reaching a bittersweet ending while still leaving enough small callbacks to satisfy longtime fans while still making it a great adventure for everyone. And fuck it, in this day and political climate, it's just nice to see a movie unapologetically show fascists getting btfoed.
@@SuperboyBeyond No. You don't know what you're talking about. Skull is still very recognizable as a Spielberg film. The shot composition, the blocking, his use of shadow, the way he moves the camera, etc. What you're getting hung up on is CGI and the film's original color grade, which was corrected in the 4K release and on D+.
@@nope5657 The thing with me and Crystal Skull is that while I do think it's a Spielberg film visually, I think something is up with the footage despite the language. I've seen the film from multiple releases and no matter what, everything looks too glossy and has a "vaseline" type affect and the whites look overexposed A LOT. I remember Kingdom of the Crystal Skull looking too "glowy" or "fuzzy" if that makes sense. I'd really want to know the full story of how the footage was handled.
@@pacman5698Have you actually seen the newest release of the film? I'm not a fan of the film either but they toned down the how bright and saturated it was and now it looks closer to what the original 3 look like. It makes the movie a lot more watchable

You nailed it. Explained it far better than I could. One detail I noticed is Indy's excuse for not contacting Marion. "She doesn't want to talk to me". Well, clearly she did, since Helena (a total stranger to Marion) was able to convince her to come back into his life. Marion clearly wanted to mend things. But Indy was just so inconsolable with grief that she couldn't reach him. It took her confronting him when he's most vulnerable, unable to just run away from another problem for them to reconcile and move forward. I found this a very heartfelt film, in addition to being just a fun final adventure for my favorite movie hero. It's a damn shame it's underperforming.
You know, it's sad when the mediocre treasure hunting film that was inspired by this franchise and had way worse instances of forced fanservice, Uncharted, had a better box office record than a genuinely fun and enjoyable film from the franchise that inspired it that had fanservice that serviced the story
Again, blame today's audience. Lowest of standards. Like the guys at Redlettermedia said: people would rather watch Jason Statham use a Samurai sword while riding a jet ski while fighting a prehistoric great white shark than enjoy the depth, emotion and character driven Dial of Destiny. They also mention how people watch Grimace shakes tik tok more than movies now. Pathetic.

@@worldconquestonyoutubeHe was a very strong character, the strongest, most fleshed out character in the movie, AND AN AMAZING WARRIOR. Seriously, I don't know what are this people on!
The thing that I appreciated about Dial of Destiny is that Mangold found a way to insult fascism in a different way that still continued how Spielberg did so in the original trilogy. The Nazis were obsessed and fetishized a glorious view on Roman culture, believing that they were the continuation of the glorious Empire and that they would carry on the legacy of the superior race for thousands of years. Then the Nazis go back in time and it turns out the Romans are the ones that end up killing them. IE the movie subtlety tells us that the narratives Nazis made isn't even true. The people they idolized also hate them. Also, the Nazis believed in a mythologized and non-existent past so I think the time travels tuff fits in wonderfully with the themes. The Nazis plan to begin with was ridiculous. You can't recreate the past or burry yourself in it. And Voller and his friends learned that the hard way.
I don't think it's fair to say the Romans killed the Nazis because they understood and despised their ideology. The Romans killed the Nazis because they were a big metal dragon killing all their men. They didn't know who they were.
Saw it in IMAX theaters twice. Not a perfect film, but still a very fitting conclusion to the beloved character, as well as containing some epic action, great cinematography, and character work with themes of past vs future for Indy’s final adventure.
No film's perfect. Gone With the Wind could have been half an hour shorter and Citizen Kane surprisingly pays little attention to fact Charles's child died.
@@pacman5698Don't forget about the massive "Rosebud" plot hole!. It almost broke the movie for me, though I still found it to be an AMAZING masterpiece, even though it was made in FREAKING 1942!
Before going to the cinema, I've heard lots of negative reviews. I was aware that I can be disappointed - but that didn't happen!!! What I got was a GREAT movie, with fantastic opening (that John Williams' theme from Last Crusade when Indy rapidly turned towards the train... I still have chills) and really good main part of the film. I've seen these videos with titles screaming 'Phoebie takes over the movie / destroys Indiana Jones'- NOTHING LIKE THIS HAPPENED. Yes she had her own motivation, but she was one character, and Indy was another - and he was doing all the stuff Indiana Jones should be doing, in Indiana Jones' fashion, in cool locations, solving riddles and uncovering new pieces of the puzzle and with a heartwarming ending. I was very satisfied with this movie, I don't get why is everyone ganging up on it so much.
@@Filmy_Maguire_69420 exactly! - Mutt made remarks like 'hey old man', 'gramps' etc.- no problem, Helena says similar stuff - that means she wants to take over the franchise? What's up with this logic?
People decided to hate this movie because Fleabag was in it. And any strong female character written in the 21st century is woke according to them. I love Phoebe and she was great in this. People get more views by being negative. For a legacy movie in a sea of legacy movies, this movie was pretty good.
I understand why some people were mad at Dial of Destiny, like criticisms like how the series should’ve ended with last crusade, or how Helena’s arc was half baked. But some were just saying “The franchise is ruined” or “This is woke garbage” i’ve even see somebody say the movie was the worst one A MONTH before it even came out.
Maybe that somebody saw a screening, and even if they didn't, the trailers gave no indication the movie would even be good. Everything looked too polished and CGI, I'd think it was bad too.
@@devontehuntley6274ill, people send hate and toxicity without even seeing the complete product. that doesn't mean the movie isn't bad, but don't be like those people that actually validate opinions without information before seeing the movie just because you agree with the result of how the movie was
I don't take the this is woke crap people seriously. Especially when I was in a discussion with one who stated that there was no feminism in Indiana Jones. I wish I was kidding.
People hate this film and I'll never understand why. It was well paced, funny, thrilling, expertly crafted and most of all Surprising. At no point, did I have any idea where this was going . I think history will be very kind to this film.
Every Indiana Jones sequel has had it's share of hate from some fans and audiences. I remember reading reviews of The Last Crusade giving it 2/5 stars but now it's loved. Dial of Destiny is superb fun and a great Indy adventure that is miles better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It evokes the magic from the original trilogy perfectly and Mads Mikleson is quite possibly my favorite Indy villain. Also Harrison Ford's performance is on point.
I agree with you on Harrison Ford. I thought he gave a great final performance as Indy, however after watching DoD twice in the theaters and once at home I’m honestly conflicted if I prefer it over Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
You're the only one I have seen with similar sentiments I felt watching it. This movie really got bashed for no real reason. My expectation was for it to exceed Crystal Skull and it totally did
The only reason people started to form opinions before it came out was because of Disney's ties with Kathleen Kennedy. Had this movie been delayed just one more time, or had waited to be made and released until further after Disney fired Kathleen Kennedy, this movie would've been seen as a masterpiece. PW-B may have even been given a bit of a second chance, as her character actually doesn't try to replace Indiana Jones. And while her character doesn't have the greatest arc or dialogue or choices due to writing, Helena still brings something to the table and pays respect to Indiana Jones. Eventually by the end, starting to get the idea of "the penitent man will symbolically kneel." Technically in a way reminding Indiana Jones that just as the Nazi's failed to realize, he belongs in his own time, that in order to save history, he must let it remain and return to his own time. To turn away. Just as Indy chose to turn away from finding what the ark held, to turn away from the idea of having all the stones and sacrificing two for one to save the village and his companions, to turn away and let the grail go, and even to turn away from the gift of the alien and the treasures held in the ufo. And again, while this isn't exactly executed as well as it could've been, it still does fall in line with the idea. This movie suffered not because of the actors the characters the direction, but because of simply being made at the wrong place at the wrong time. Again, just one last delay or just waiting a little while longer would've saved this movie. So yes I think the movie is great. I think it deserves another chance.
This was a fit ending for Indiana, if they left it off on Crystal Skull I would have felt a bit disappointed. People labeled this movie off when they realized it would be a Disney movie. I’m not the biggest fan of modern Disney but they weren’t just grabbing for money, this is what I waited for and it was worth it.

Glad to hear from someone who really enjoyed this film. I was sad to hear of all the mixed and negative reviews, but I'm in high hopes now. I have yet to see the film, but am excited to see it as soon as possible in theaters!
Yeah, you're in high hopes because ONE idiot decided to like the movie versus all the tons of reviews that said it was bad. Yeah, that makes total sense.
Dear Buzzkill - "one idiot"? How is FilmSpeak an idiot for liking something you don't? And it's not just him. The film is at 70% on RT and an 88% audience score. Clearly there are tons of reviews saying it's good. The only negative reviews I've seen in bulk are from UA-camrs who whine about "wokeness" and are more pissed at the Star Wars films than this one.
@@braytonwright6011 Because the idiot user literally said it wasn't until they came onto THIS video after seeing all the negative and mixed reviews elsewhere, that they are now convinced the movie is good. That is just ridiculous and if you are a fan of this movie or think it has any value then you are just as lost as the ones who are looking forward to seeing this thinking it holds any merit. This is LUCASFILM DISNEY we are talking about here, so of course any movie is going to be WOKE and done so in a terrible way and its quite evident here worse than in the Star Wars sequels. @@Lolux1701 In any case, everyone is subject to their opinion, and no one opinion is correct, it's just an opinion. As someone that never has seen in Indiana Jones film in movie theaters before I can safely say that this was a brilliant enjoyment for me! I really love the flashback scenes with Indiana Jones on the train and the rest of the movie was just absolutely mind-blowing and the ending was really satisfying and a perfect conclusion to the franchise. I don't care what anyone says, I absolutely loved this film!
I honestly loved the movie, watched it 3 times and i rarely do that - especially for blockbusters. It definately feels a bit off, probably had troubled development and without spielberg too but also has this offbeat style that doesnt feel generic the same way as star wars. It feels like how it would feel to suddenly wake up to realise your life of action and adventure is over and all you have to look forward to is the slow step into the unknown. I like how it feels like we are finally seeing the vulnerable side of this character now old enough to see what his life represents. Super spiritual movie and i like that. I was pleasantly suprised by the movie
Agreed, I actually quite liked this film. I’m not saying it was the best, but it is certainly a lot better than what people are saying! My guess is that a lot of the film’s struggles were due to people being burned out from the Star Wars sequels.
Agreed. Filling Spielberg’s shoes was a tall order, but I thought Mangold did an admirable job. DOD was a fitting end to Indy’s adventures. Far better than KOTCS imo.
I LOVED Dial Of Destiny… it just goes to show that the sheep are not always right. It also goes to show that people follow along and don’t have their own opinions.
I really appreciate that someone actually watched the movie and saw what Mangold was attempting to create. I thought this movie was a moving depiction of a man whose time has come and gone and his struggle with his regrets. I would disagree about the whole Continental drift scene though. I saw it as Indy trying to plant doubt in Voller’s mind so he would turn back. Indy knew where they were headed after he spotted Voller’s watch being the same one Archemides was wearing in the tomb. The dial only leads back to one point in time.
I agree with your assessment. I think DIAL OF DESTINY is way better than it was first received and will get more love as time goes on. My fav Indy films in order: 1. Raiders 2. Crusade 3. Dial 4. Temple 5. Skull
Friend I’m not sure who is writing for you but there are a number of mispronunciations that may confuse your audience - see “facsimile” and your mispronunciation of Longinus for two examples
I enjoyed the movie. Great action, settings, sound, music, story. Great analysis about the film and all its characters and their motivations. 16:50 And the points made when talking about the nazis in the film waging war on the past and then them also literally shooting at ancient cultures' warriors of cultures they supposedly reveered. Man, the Indiana Jones films hit the nail on the head about Nazis' "archeology" and "history".
I personally really liked the film. Indy and Helena is such a good dynamic that I think put a spin on what was done previously. She definitely felt like a breath of fresh air to the trope of “damsel caught by bad guy and used for the plot” and actually can kick ass and is a pretty sweet character to bounce off with Indy. Harrison Ford of course still rocking the fedora, jacket, and whip like it’s 1981, but they smartly didn’t make him in his later years as invincible as he probably was in the Raiders years. He is smart, but impatient. He is resourceful, but often is surprised by some things he previously overlooked. He definitely has earned retiring the character, and I think it was a very poetic end to the legend of Indiana Jones. The villains, while yes it’s Nazis again, I think do work very well here with their plot and the dial and in the end it really was their hubris and cocky attitudes that was their own undoing (like in Raiders and Last Crusade). I don’t even mind that Indy wasn’t really that big of a player in the final act, as in Raiders he was literally tied to a chair with his eyes shut for like 20 minutes while the Nazis got blown half to hell. At least he was there, and that’s all that matters. Overall, not a perfect end (cause no film is perfect), but a damn great movie and a solid end to one of the greatest movie legends on the silver screen.
I read a comment from another review and it was spot on. The first time viewing the movie i was preoccupied with hoping it wasnt awful that i didnt take the time to enjoy it. On a second viewing i was able to sit back, relax and thoroughly enjoyed it! With that said, it wasnt a perfect movie and i thought the main downfall was the helena shaw character. I dont know if it was the actress that didnt work (im not overly familiar with her previous work) or the material. Either way i didnt find myself forming any attachment or emotional connection with her. I think that if they could have brought Short Round(keep the young boy in the movie still as Short Rounds sidekick) back in place of helena shaw character, and do the exact same story(minus the god daughter part of course) it would have been even BETTER. Indy did find him when he was young stealing in the streets and to have him come back and try to hoodwink indy only to fall in love with him again and go on one last adventure would have been a wonderful full circle ending(marion included of course)
everytime someone shits on this movie they bring up how crystal skull was a good movie in their opinion and I realized they aren't indy fans they just got into the hate
Wait 10 years people will appreciate the whole Indy franchise, I swear the fanbase is split some like crystal skull and some hate it and some love all three first movies and some hate temple of doom and some love it and even last crusade some hate it but majority love it including myself it’s my favorite, some love raiders and some hate it so it’s very split and now dial it seems like 90% hate it and only 10% just like it but we will see how the future looks. One thing I wanted that mutt have a family on his own off screen and short round cameo but I hope we get short round movie or a series it could be good
I thought this film did the exact opposite of the over played “coming of age” trope. This film (although flawed) was a solid “ending of age” film. And I appreciated the ending message being “Indiana Jones is greater than the sum of his failures”
Your right Indy 5 is a really good movie people just don't want to watch Indy in a time of old age where Dr Jones can't do the thing he used to do in his old films I don't care if Indy 5 is bombing at the box office I just want to see an Indiana Jones movie in theatres so in conclusion Indy 5 is a worth to watch movie and people should give it a chance
I don't think Dial of Destiny is a perfect (or even great) film by any means, but this video has got to be the best I've seen arguing for the film's merits. I love how eloquently you managed to connect everything to the themes of living in the past and obsession, and definitely helps me realize how much thought was actually put into the story.
I thought the film was phenomenal. Its modern so it's not the same, and it's in the 1960s so far along outside of the indiana jones cream suited "Doctah jones" villain. And what a crazy choice to make a long cgi scene in the opening, very bold and it turned out largely okay, not too bad looking.
…so, one is gonna talk that Indy magically stopped being a wanted criminal and everything was resolved while he was knocked out? Third act was, really not good. I get that people are unnecessary cynical towards these movie, but painting the movie as good seems like… idk, weird. It was fun to watch, but it felt incomplete.
Although I agree that everything being solved while knocked out, I don't think it's fair to say the ENTIRE 3rd act was bad. The third act starts after Indie is abducted and we get a nice chase scene with a good twist and tense action.
I am so grateful to have a critic that actually told the truth about this movie instead of bad mounting it for no reason even before it came out. But many of the critics I think had to be a special type of Sob to bad mouth A character that meant so much for so many people for no good reason. I guess I just call them woke, Which means whatever you say don't have to make a lot of sense.
I’m glad I wasn’t alone and appreciating this last movie for what it was and what it was trying to accomplish without over, criticizing all the nitpicky things people may not have liked about it.

@@FilmSpeak you must’ve watched Kingdom of the Crystal Skull again. There’s a new movie that calls itself Indiana Jones (don’t watch it, it’s…sad, and mean-spirited), which basically gives Indy the same treatment Han Solo, Leia, and Luke Skywalker got in those movies that came out between 2015 and 2019; the same treatment Obi Wan just got in the Obi Wa-…I’m sorry, the Reeva show; the same treatment Bruce Banner got in She-Hulk.
I was really scared to see this movie, but after watching it I was so happy. After reading some of the reviews, I felt like I had no idea what movie the critics watched. I loved it. The ending was super cool, reminds me of something I would have done with toy soldiers years ago. I feel like there's a very strange hate campaign for this movie- there's so much hatred and vitriol directed towards it. Is it the best Indy movie of all time? No, but it is really good! Feel bad knowing the reviews this got, and that it didn't do well at the box office.
The critics were unusually harsh on this film, bashing it for having a weak storyline padded out with action, characters with very little dimension, and, one review said "a ridiculously silly climax." But I ask you this. In what way did this movie depart from any of the standard Indy fare? Sure, it isn't the best entry in the series, but in my opinion, it played it safe by sticking to the tried and true formula of "find the thing and stop the bad guy from having the thing" followed by "Oh no! the bad guy got the thing but it's ok because the thing screwed the bad guy over in the end." As for characterization, none of the new characters introduced had any less or more dimension than the characters in the original trilogy (with the exception of Sean Connery). I enjoyed the movie and think it deserved better than the critics gave it.
It's the soulless way it's been shoveled out. Let's start with the John Williams score which you'll barely notice in this installment. The ridiculous plot that I won't spoil for others but makes Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Oscar worthy. Poor CGI, the annoying Wombat, rehashes of superior moments from previous films, an uninspired main villain. It's like they have taken the Indy franchise and sucked the life out of it like some sort of vampire. Harrison Ford is 80 though so perhaps that actually happened
I really think people just had a hate boner for this movie because it was genuinely solid. Nothing about it was offensive or did a disservice to the character and people saying otherwise are the ones who are trying to cling to an unrealistic idea of a character. I liked that they showed indiana joned has aged, I think they handled it well and with respect. So the people making claims that “this isn’t even his movie” are talking out their ass. I think his goddaughter was totally fine in the movie. I didn’t love her but I definitely didn’t hate her. People saying there was anything “woke” about this movie legitimately just hate women because there wasn’t a single woke aspect of the movie.
Thank you for having the brains and balls to tell people this movie is good. Because guess what. It's good. I really liked it. I feel bad for the backlash this movie is receiving. It was fun. It's easy to say you would have done this or that. I hope time will prove this movie worthy of the praise I believe it deserves.
It's fine to enjoy it, but it wasn't good. For me: 4/10 - at least it wasn't aliens. The writing is clumsy, the pacing is weird, the nostalgia is shoe-horned (and I found it odd that the video suggests it doesn't do this), there are a few good moments (2 off the top of my head: Indie mentioning his friend just died and talking about Mutt dying in 'nam), there are far too many things that don't make sense not least of all Indie being taken prisoner after he's shot, lots of people die and nobody seems to care (is that a modern thing? Thinking that death is no big deal?)... it was watchable, but anyone intellectualising this movie is a grade-A bozo.
Was it necessary? No, but every movie can earn its existence and Dial of Destiny did it. I didn't think it was a good idea at first, but I saw the movie and enjoyed it. I couldn't deny it and why would I? I don't get why people are so prejudiced these days.
Oh trust me, the mixed to negative reception for this movie is 100% just and well deserved. It pains me on how the movie treated Indy with literally 0 respect for the character and his history. The ending wasn't earned and the movie was boring and soulless. The villain was bland and boring compared to the previous 4. Helena was an unlikable egotistical toxic woman who from the very start constantly mocks and belittles Indy throughout most of the film cause he's "old" and stuff was just hard to watch especially since he lost his only son and going through and divorce which is just more salt on the wound. The flashback scene from the beginning of the movie, Him and Marion reconciling at the end of the movie and the closing final shot of Indy's hat was the only good parts of the movie. We didn't need this movie, we didn't want this movie. This flim much like the Star Wars Sequels will be nothing more but a nearly forgotten product of its time with only a certain portion of people still watching it while others will stick to the original 3 films and heck maybe the 4th film as well. Say what you want about Crystal Skull and yes it has its flaws but at least it gave a much better send off to Indy than this movie ever could.
I would argue that while I agree that the film wasn’t afraid to say goodbye to our favorite hero, it definitely felt very similar to other recent Lucasfilm entries - using a legacy hero to introduce a new younger character to create a spin-off of
I reluctantly went to see this movie last week and fully expected to be disappointed. There are 4 franchises that defined my childhood. These are Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Carribbean and, of course, Indiana Jones. I was excited to see the Star Wars sequels and still remember how disappointed I felt after watching The Force Awakens, and it didn't get much better from there. The first Fantastic Beast movie was really good imo, but the sequel was an inexcusable mess and I still haven't bothered to watch the 3rd one (and if you told my younger self that in the future I couldn't be bothered to watch a Harry Potter movie, I'd laugh in your face). Pirates of the Carribbean 5 was an embarrasment with abysmal pacing and cringeworthy humour. Three of my favourite franchises utterly wasted, their legacies stained by these failures. I figured it was finally time for Indy to share their fate. But it felt right to say goodbye to the character and series that means so much to me in the cinema. So I went and... I had a damn good time. It's not a masterpiece, but compared to those other legacy sequels, it's on an entirely different level. It's a fun, action packed adventure that feels like an Indy movie. The action setpieces are all fun, the villains are just as cartoonishly evil as nazis in an Indy movie should be (and Mads Mikkelsen does a great job at playing Voller), the humour works, and the finale, while bonkers, is pretty damn epic. I've seen people hating on Helena, saying that she's a woke feminazi character who exists to mock Indy because the evil Kathleen Kennedy hates white male protagonists or whatever, and I can only assume that people who spout this nonsense haven't seen the film. Indy is still the tough badass we know and love; yeah, he's older, but the movie doesn't show him as weak, he still kicks ass. And Indy was always rather vulnerable for an action hero; he gets beaten hard and almost dies in basically every movie. Besides, Helena never overshadows him; she learns from him, the experience helps her develop as a person and I found their dynamic really enjoyable. Yeah, she mocks Indy early on, but first, this is explicitely framed as a character flaw, not some girlboss attitude, and she grows to respect him by the end. And two, literally every female sidekick Indy had bickered with him all the time. Marion literally hits him the first time they meet in Raiders, Willie hates him for half of Temple, and Elsa literally betrays him and joins the nazis for gods sake. But now it's suddenly a problem when Helena doesn't show Indy proper respect? I assume this idiotic narrative was devised by the anti-sjw content creators, you know, the people who literally make a living by screaming and kicking every time a woman or a minority appears in a modern piece of media. In the end, this is a fun blockbuster that brought me back to the good old days; before the multiverse, before superhero fever, before cinematic universes; back to when you could just get a mostly self-contained, fun adventure that doesn't need to set up fifty sequels and spin-offs. TL;DR: If you're a fan of Indy, go see it. It's not as good as the first three; but then what is? The worst thing you can say about it is that it's a good movie in a series of masterpieces. I may have some issues with it, but in the end, I think it's a worthy final adventure for one of the greatest heroes in movie history.
Nowadays people want to get value for their movie ticket purchase and that is a premium price at the moment. Any doubtful reviews really are putting cinema goers off and not surprisingly people don't want to waste their money. Obviously many would not rush to the cinemas and instead wait for it to hit streaming services or PayTV/DVD/Blu-Ray where they can take the 'risk' or watch it twice or three times for less money.
Everyone is entitiled to their own personal opinion as to the quality of this film. What is not subject to personal opinion is that this movie had a $300M+ budget, and those who believe it was good could not generate enough positive word of mouth to save it from tanking.
This movie just felt so unnecessary to me. There was no big action scene, no big artifact, nothing really happened that felt like we needed to see it. It was just bland. The lack of Spielberg and Lucas also take away for the overall vibe of these movies. Crystal Skull was a say better send off to Indy. He got married to the love of his life, and had father son moments with his son which mirrors last crusade.
The movie was so good that I'm still thinking about it days later. It's a genuine Indy classic. The MacGuffin was brilliantly used, better than in any of the previous films.
I actually picked your video because I really didn't enjoy the film. It was boring, the storytelling was senseless and the characters were dumb as a brick. I do agree that you pointed out to layers that I didn't consider and indeed these layers were well done. Too bad though that other layers were completely messed up, like Indy surviving being dragged against the train tunnel or room explosion, making any mortal threat irrelevant.
I absolutely love your positivity, its such a great change from the awful and depressing "film review community" here on youtube, you earned a sub. We know this film ain't perfect but wr should just feel lucky we still got a really good indiana jones movie! My favorite character of cinema.
It’s actually really good! Shame there are so many angry young key board warriors who have irrational hate for anything Lucasfilm/Disney released without sitting back, relaxing and putting things into perspective.
I saw the movie over the weekend. I was waiting to hate the movie and talked my self out of enjoying the first half. But this movie won me over big time. There are so many UA-cam reviewers who are simply playing to fanboys who hate Disney and especially vitriolic toward Kathleen Kennedy. They almost convinced me not see a very satisfy and proper conclusion to this era of Indiana Jones. I say this era because you know Disney isn't letting this property remain dormant.
You nailed it here about UA-cam reviewers. This platform is the main source of negativity about this film. Everywhere else I've looked, it's mostly pretty damn positive. Critics at 70% on RT, audience at 88%, positive comments on Facebook, Twitter, Indy forums, etc. In short, audiences and fans who don't chronically watch rage bait UA-camrs who are upset at KK and Disney, and are taking their Star Wars anger out on Indy, seem to love this film.
@braytonwright6011 I also noticed that. Facebook seems to love the movie. Twitter is a little mixed, but most seem to think it's good. Reddit... is reddit. And youtube has absolutely nothing good to say about it.
It was okay, but it wasn't the beautiful end of bittersweet goodbye this character deserved in my opinion of course. It was a bit disappointing mismatched of a script.
I’m glad someone else noticed that Helena is a lot like Temple of Doom Indy. Heck they both met their sidekicks by the sidekicks trying to steal from them.
Yes but for the current moment of realisation, the look on Vollers face is priceless lol, he thought he was so smart but if the dial had worked as he fully believed it did, he made a MASSIVE screw up
@@jmb9040 I agree. Only thing I would have changed was the punch at the end. I’d rather he had passed out from being shot at that moment and woke up. Still I liked the movie.
Anytime you have to make a point of insisting that something is ACTUALLY GOOD, indicates that it isn't. This movie is one of the biggest flops of all time for a reason.
@@FilmSpeak If it really were good, you'd just say it was good. You wouldn't need to attach the word "actually" to it and hysterically assert it's ACTUALLY GOOD! in all caps like that. The reason you felt the need to do that is because you're asserting your opinion in implicit opposition to the vast majority of reviewers (i.e. anyone with an ounce of taste and half a brain) who are correctly calling this film out for being garbage. And not only is it one of the biggest disasters in movie history (not surprising since it was made by the most incompetent producer in movie history) it's going to be viewed even more unfavorably as time goes by, because that's what always happens to woke trash. But keep living in your fantasy-world if that makes you happy.

I was honestly expecting dial of destiny to be a garbage movie before i saw it but after walking out of the the theater the movie was actually good and thought it was much better then crystal skull biggest issue i had with the movie was the fact that Antonio Banderas's character was criminally underused!
I often see Helena criticized quite often for "taking over" the hero role in this film and, before watching the movie for myself, I was quite worried how her Character would play out. But I was really surprised by her and you pointed out her role in the movie beautifully. I feel, if she had been one of the movies of the 80's or 90's she would have been praised and regarded as a great female action heroine. Also it made me so happy when I saw that Steven and George were the Producers of this film in the credits. They are two of my favorite filmmakers.
honestly, I didn't have high expectations when I watched it, but I was genuinely surprised by how good it was ! It really felt like watching one of the fun Indiana Jones early movies. Not only that, the action was quite good and I love how they FINALLY gave a fair representation of Morocco, not that bullshit everyone lives in the desert stuff we're used to seeing in Hollywood movies. I'm still in shock at some reviews I saw online and I don't understand why some people decided to hate on it. It's sad that this might be the last Indiana Jones we movie we'll get, or at least a last one with Harrison Ford.
This film was beautiful and sweet and melancholic. It was tenderhearted and true to EVERYTHING that makes Indy a great franchise while also finding its own voice. I hope word of mouth helps ppl find this great sequel and finale
I have to admit I very much liked it, the storyline was much easier to understand than his 2008 movie., and the action scenes were very very Indiana. oki, you wouldn't expect another Raiders of the lost Ark as he was in probably his probably later 30s, It was just a bit sour of an 80-year old winning a few punches, and when he got out his whip to keep people away during the half-dial auction was kind-of embarrassing, and maybe he shouldn't of scuba dived. But he has knowledge in his mind, he's very much essential companion, in adventures as he can still read languages, he's just Indiana Jones who can never be replaced.
It’s so refreshing to see a positive review of this film. I watched the film yesterday after giving it a miss at the cinema due to the negative reviews. I don’t usually listen to reviews and like to make up my own mind. I enjoyed much of the Crystal Skull but still felt it was a disappointment over all so I sat down to watch Dial of Destiny with little enthusiasm but I was very much surprised. I thoroughly enjoyed the film as well as the characters of Wombat and Teddy. This was a perfect end in my opinion to one of my fave series of films as a child. Hopefully people will give it another chance.
I am so happy to find one video essay that doesn't bash this movie. I had the best time watching this movie (I saw it on August 20, imagine my surprise when that same date showed up in the movie!). The third Indiana Jones came out ten years before I was born, I was too young in 2008 to see the fourth one. I never thought that I would be able to see an Indiana Jones movie at the cinema. That is, until Indy 5 was announced. It was an incredible and sureal feeling walking in to the movie theatre, to hear the Raiders March blasting through the speakers, to be able to see the final adventure of one my all-time favourite characters. Indiana's growth throughout the films has been beautiful to see, and I loved how the movie explored his character at that point of his life. The ending was just beautiful, I cried when Marion showed up. It's so beautiful to see that they've grown old together and look at each other with the same love in their eyes as they did in the first film. To me, Dial of Destiny was such a good movie and a perfect goodbye to the franchise. I'm happy that I got the chance to experience it in theaters
Watched it today. I liked it very much and would even like to see a sequel to this. I think it's balanced and interesting, and even respecting the lore. It took me a while to give this movie a chance. But since I experienced once or twice how even critics I trusted could also get it wrong sometimes, I wanted to see what all the fuzz was about with this one. I watched it with a critical eye, prepared to be greatly disappointed, I walked into it with a distance I promised myself to keep and rather like watching a spoof, I felt painfully ready to laugh for all the wrong reasons. But to the contrary, I was pleasantly surprised how good it was. Not only that, I also came to think that a role like Indie's god daughter we get see quite seldomly, maybe never before, which sounds cringe in and of itself as like being taken from a red carpet marketing supercut. I think the failure - if any - lied within the marketing surrounding the movie: activists on both sides got in over their head and projected something onto Phoebe Waller-Bridge's character as well as her dynamics with Ford which IMHO wasn't really there to the pivoting extent, neither from a pro feminist nor a conservative standpoint. If you're able to take the film for what it is I think you'll have a great time, but I feel for all those too who got irreversibly burnt by "the culture war", which is exactly set out to divide people, when Dial of Destiny, at least for me, managed to do kind of the opposite. Of course, cineasts' mileage will vary and each to their own, as always. Cudos to John Williams' OST which glued everything together like it should, if the music accompanies without stepping too much in the foreground, they say, it's well done... Only gripes will have to be some cgi shots of Indie's younger self, as well as their disconnect with his old grumpy voice we hear him talk with no matter what. It's a mixed bag though, some shots stand out and work beautifully and the others don't take too much from the opening for it to kill the experience, only in hindsight, for some they might have a bit of an overshadowing quality. I have to wonder though what lead to some of the sketchier shots. If you browse the web a bit you stumble over gifted artists galore who with time and budget could have ironed out the uncanny parts no doubt. But production was alledgedly rough, and behind the curtains, decisions are being made not only to the benefit of each and every aspect of a movie... so it's just a thing to consider - or is it? Technology moves fast, and maybe I'm not the only one who pondered once or twice if Clue's "face" wasn't actually a shortcoming in Tron Legacy, but a deliberate artistic statement. lol 😂 Have fun! 🎉
I love this video! This is the only review that seems to understand the character of Indiana jones and the formula of the movies. I watched all of the movies leading up to Dial and then I was surprised at how great it was! I think a lot of people have forgotten how these movies work and how Indy thinks and acts. And of course there’s the common sentiment that “good movies don’t exist anymore”… I feel like Dial was the perfect movie for a franchise that seems to have been left behind or forgotten by most of the audience (myself included unfortunately) as time has passed, and the way that sentiment was weaved into the story and the character was great.
Genuinely really liked the film, it's a solid swan song and final outing for Indy. I do think there's something to be said about how much people were upset that Han Solo didn't change over the years and was still doing the same thing he always does in The Force Awakens, so they tried to take that to heart with Indy. He's not going to be the same anymore. He's old, he's tired and embittered. All of his friends are slowly dying or moving on and he's left alone in the aftermath of his son's death. Part of me wishes they could've brought Shia back but I think the way they handled his character was ultimately very respectful and worked really well as a way to provide a foundation to Indy's arc in the film.
THANK YOU so much for sharing your awesome view of this great Indiana Jones film which, by the way, I watched last night at the theater for the fourth time! A beautiful ending indeed. It hardly deserved the flack people were quick to give it.
I thought the film was fine. But to me, the first 3 Indiana Jones movies are the true Indy stories. Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny are legends, like the non-canon/legends of Star Wars. It may have or may not have happened. There are cool elements in Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny, but there are things I don't want to believe, like aliens, or time travel. But I watch it because they can be fun.
Just got back from seeing Dial of Destiny. I thought it was very solid. Sure we’re some flaws/plot holes in it, but they didn’t bother me that much. The first 20 minutes is in league with the first three minutes. And the ending was very sweet and emotional with Indy and Marion. Overall I give this movie a 7.5/10
This essay is so refreshing from the unnecessary hate the film is getting. I really like this movie, but I would’ve loved it if Indy was given more to do at the end. Felt very anti-climatic.
What did YOU think about Indy 5? 🤔I know this is a bit of a controversial take but I'll proudly own it. COMMENT BELOW!💥

Temple of doom is technically the first, it’s a prequel sequel
It's a shame people decided to hate this film before it even came out
Agree, don't they have respect for what LucasFilm has brought us and Harrison Ford final performance as Indiana Jones.
It's honestly really sad. The hate started 2 years ago, before it was even filmed. It clearly shows the people already made up their mind on this movie way before release.
That's movie discourse in a nutshell now - everyone has months or even YEARS to form a narrative about a film based on their biases.
They’re just salty Star Wars purists who want to spread their salty tears to the Indiana Jones fandom.

“What did you find Dad?”
“Illumination”
What a wholesome story to read.
Indiana Jones is an iconic film franchise. It didn’t deserve to flop, knowing how much it generated an impact over the decades.
Star Wars is an iconic franchise as well yet those last three movies definitely deserve to flop

Bullshit

I couldn't agree more!
Shut up it sucked period
I didn't find this movie melancholic. At first, yes, but Indy quickly gets drawn into action again, realizes he's still needed, and the melancholy dissipates.

@@nope5657 The thing with me and Crystal Skull is that while I do think it's a Spielberg film visually, I think something is up with the footage despite the language.
I really enjoyed this movie there is no stupid scene and dialogue. The story is very very interesting

It’s the negativity that kills this movie.

Have you not seen how so many female protagonists are written with a few exceptions? Are you telling me that she hulk is not woke?
I loved this film, great story and dialogue that was sharp and narrative driven. The only downer was it should have been made years ago.
LOL, It had none of those things.

I don't, it's just not that good. An octogenarian doesn't make for a good action hero
Having standards is a good thing, the movie was bad and too long,
Every Indiana Jones sequel has had it's share of hate from some fans and audiences.
Fair enough. I've seen DoD twice and still love it. Crystal Skull is one I would happily never go back to but each to their own I guess 🤷

As someone that never has seen in Indiana Jones film in movie theaters before I can safely say that this was a brilliant enjoyment for me! I don't care what anyone says, I absolutely loved this film!
It's garbo
I fully agree. I personally thought Indy 5 was a good movie!
Critics are being way too hard on this one. Mangold and crew showed passion and love for Indy through every frame of this movie!
I agree with your assessment. I think DIAL OF DESTINY is way better than it was first received and will get more love as time goes on. My fav Indy films in order:
1. Raiders
2. Crusade
3. Dial
4. Temple
5. Skull
Just returned from the theatre and enjoyed it more than I expected after hearing lots of negativity. It was a good Indy film.

The action and story were trash.
I enjoyed the movie! I agree it wasn’t spectacular and some scenes felt rushed / unanswered but I feel that Indy had a fitting end for his character.
The last crusade was a fitting end

I couldn't agree more.

finally, a review that sees this film for what it is
Thank you for this, there is no way this movie deserves the reception it's gotten. A beautiful sendoff, and time will definitely be kind to it.
LOL
I would argue that while I agree that the film wasn’t afraid to say goodbye to our favorite hero, it definitely felt very similar to other recent Lucasfilm entries - using a legacy hero to introduce a new younger character to create a spin-off of
Great analysis, you didn't write off the movie before you watched it like so many others seem to have done!
Thank you! 🙏🏻
It's not good. It's great. Much like your video, mate.
Thank you so much man. I'm glad you think so as well!
Everyone is entitiled to their own personal opinion as to the quality of this film.
What is not subject to personal opinion is that this movie had a $300M+ budget, and those who believe it was good could not generate enough positive word of mouth to save it from tanking.
I hope people come around on this film. I loved it as Indy's swansong.
Great video. Its nice seeing others who enjoyed the film. While No Last Crusade, it is a fun Indy Movie.
Better than the ark? REALLY?
I actually picked your video because I really didn't enjoy the film. It was boring, the storytelling was senseless and the characters were dumb as a brick.
I do agree that you pointed out to layers that I didn't consider and indeed these layers were well done.
Too bad though that other layers were completely messed up, like Indy surviving being dragged against the train tunnel or room explosion, making any mortal threat irrelevant.
Yeah you're wrong about certain things about the movie. It's far from boring, and the storytelling is good as it gets
The movie was absolutely fine. Too long. But nothing really wrong with the movie. Helena was actually great. It is a nice ending to a saga.
How is about 2 and a half hours too long? That's a perfect length for a movie
I’m glad someone else noticed that Helena is a lot like Temple of Doom Indy. Heck they both met their sidekicks by the sidekicks trying to steal from them.
Turn in your movie critique pass right now buddy, turn it in right now you're fired
Cry about it
The continental drift line doesn’t mean anything because the dial was always supposed to direct the user to the battle of Syracuse.
That makes no sense. And yeah box office wise it underperformed, but that doesn't indicate the quality of a film. I think time will be kind to it.
But keep living in your fantasy-world if that makes you happy.

he is a shill, he is just doing the anti critical drinker or nerdrotic thing and been doing it for a while.
@r3altalangodfrey39 or he just likes the movie. Why is that so hard to understand. It's ok if someone likes it.
@@Indy921 it's clear that you don't know what a psyops is, just look at his video history and read the real comments in this video.
he is being the anti-critical drinker, the anti-nerdrotic. it's a trend now. bill gates made you a wax-vaccine and you should take it.
Indy 5 is an excellent movie. So moving and exciting ! I saw it 5 times !
did both indiana jones and the flash bombed at box office like elemental?
It wasn’t bad but it definitely doesn’t have the same magic as the original films. I enjoyed it
Yeah, I liked it too, but it def doesnt have the spielberg magic
Technology moves fast, and maybe I'm not the only one who pondered once or twice if Clue's "face" wasn't actually a shortcoming in Tron Legacy, but a deliberate artistic statement. lol 😂
Have fun!
