Removing a broken Moen 1222 Posi-Temp tub/shower valve

- The 1222 Moen shower valve is plastic and will break off right behind the stem. It is then very difficult to get the rest of the cartridge out of the valve body without damaging the valve body. I found that a 13/32" drillbit would go through the plastic, washers and gaskets, and finally get caught in the metal cup in the back end of the original valve. Once I got the drill bit to hang up I was able to slowly work the drillbit out of the valve body. Then flushed the valve body by turning water back on slightly and the off. Then used lubricant Pack that came with the new valve and additional faucet grease to thoroughly lubricate the replacement valve before I reinstalled it. Hope this helps. Took me about an hour to get to this size drill bit as it was too deep for any of my Easi Outs to get a good bite on anything. So maybe I'll save u an hour. Good luck!!
You are a life saver partner. I worked on this for over 6 hours after snapping the stem off.
I drilled out what was left of the center and the metal part came out. Then I heated a flat head and chiped and pulled the plastic parts out piece by piece. I watched at least 20 videos before yours and your suggestion was the one that worked. Thanks for posting.
No your a life saver I didn't watch the video I read your comment big pimp you saved my B hole
Thank you for the nice trick. Called few plumbers on the weekend and no one ready to come , fix my issue. I have to turn OFF water to the entire home and finally looked up UA-cam for help. Went to lows and paid around $9 for this item exactly as described in the video. It came out in 10 seconds. WOW.. you are hero ... Thank You again.
Yeah, no reason to call a plumber for this. He will do exactly what you could do yourself, the only difference is it will cost you 1000$ instead of 60$. I had the worst case scenario for breaking this cartridge, the stem on the front broke completely off and was stuck back in the wall... still managed to get it out with a drill, a screw, and a crowbar. UA-cam is a beautiful thing.
Perfect fix - thank goodness for this video. When I snapped my cartridge trying to pull it out I panicked. This worked well. I was able to drill out the guts. The drill bit didn't grab like you mentioned, but I was able to snap away at the plastic bits with a needle nose pliers and then remove the rubber parts and then slip out the remaining cartridge. Good video, thanks for the help.
Fantastic tip! Middle metal came out, then had to break the plastic sheets inside little by little by forcing a screwdriver in between and twisting the screwdriver a little at a time. Once I broke a path in the bottom, I was able to force the top plastic down and grab it with hemostadts to pull straight out.
Again, thanks!
This helped greatly. I used the cartridge removal tool but my cartridge still broke halfway down the valve. With some drilling and pulling pieces I finally got the old valve out
This video still saving people's sanity 5 years later! Thanks from Canada!
So i tried doing this and it drilled right thru to the brass. Thankfully i noticed before it went thru and i stopped. I ended up chipping the plastic and prying it out it took me hours!!! Thankfully there is no leaks even tho i drilled the brass a bit. I almost cried!!! I will never ever do this again!!! It was a nightmare to say the least!!!
Same thing just happened to me, although I wasn't as lucky as you. The back half of mine was stuck in there really tight. In the process of trying to do what you did, I ended up gutting out the interior of the cartridge. I used a hacksaw blade to get in there and cut the cartridge longways in the housing, and I guess released enough pressure to get it loosened up enough to pull it out. Lubed the heck out of the new cartridge and so hopefully I'll avoid this mess in the future. Thanks for the info.
Have you had any leaks with the new cartridge? I'm trying your technique now. Any tips would be awesome!
@@Damon1864 Everything turned out great for me. Only word of caution I have is whatever you do, DO NOT SCORE THE INTERIOR OF THE HOUSING with your hacksaw blade. Much better to take as much time as you need instead of having to change out the entire unit.
@@Damon1864 One other thing.....get all of the debris out of the back of the housing after you get the big chunks out. Some of that stuff could get caught up in between the new cartridge and housing and cause you problems/premature cartridge failure down the road. Good luck.
@@mikhailkalashnikov4599 Thank you for taking the time to reply. I started carefully sawing the cartridge and am being very careful not to score the interior housing. I will be attempting to finish it tonight after work. Thanks again!
Your suggestion worked on a Moen 1225 cartridge that also has a plastic body. The inner half had completely broken off and nothing would budge it. Had to go with a 15/32 drill bit so that it would bite into the plastic. I did not use a drill though - just twisted by hand with a pair of pliers until it bit and pulled. Saved me a call to a plumber and ripping out a bathroom wall to replace the valve assembly. Many, many thanks!!
Glad it helped. Have to replace one of our 2 vanity cartridges tomorrow as it has begun to leak and it is also a 1225 B. Funny that u just did and I’m doing tomorrow. Glad u told me same thing worked as I might have to use it tomorrow.
Mike, any chance you are in Memphis, TN?
@@pittspinz1653 - Nope. Western CT. My experience was unusual because the one I replaced tonight broke clean. It was really odd in that it almost looked like it was supposed to be that way. I had taken the old cartridge to Lowe's to get the replacement but none matched. Fortunately they had a book of "actual size" images for all the replacement parts available and comparing led me to a 1225 replacement as the closest match. Got it home, dug out my super bright LED lights so I could see in the valve better and that's when I saw the stuck pieces. Got them out, cleaned out the area (at least 1 o-ring had degraded to almost nothing), lubed up the new cartridge, and installed. Action on the handle is 100x better now.
Mike Caldwell go ahead and send Moen a photo of the broken one and they will send u a new one to keep on hand and then use next time.
@@pittspinz1653 - Collected all the pieces and uploaded a couple pictures to imgur (imgur.com/gallery/Yg7SD5P), but Moen probably won't do anything - it doesn't look like the old cartridge is a genuine Moen. I suspect it's a Danco. It's only a $15 part and it's years between replacements so I'm not going to worry about getting a free one. Sent Danco a link to the pictures in case they were curious though. Thanks for the suggestion anyway and good luck with your repair!
He'll of a night. I was having. When it don't come out in one I end up breaking it small pieces but takes way too long. Theres been times when the diverter valve gets damaged. Thanks for the trick super helpful.
Thank you for your guidance. I did everything just like your instructions. Worked out great. I was ready to call a plumbing company but with your help I completed the job myself!
Thank you! Worked great for me too. Drill bit stuck in a piece of metal and I was able to pull it out.
Thanks!! This is exactly the same problem I’m experiencing.
The old cartridge didn't look anything like the new one. The new cartridge wouldn't go in all the way. After a frustrating couple of hours, I realized the 1225 plastic part broke off way back where the holes are and it's weak. I was able to get the black plastic out but the clear end was stuck. Then I saw the drill bit in your fingers and knew what to do. The drill bit rotated the plastic until it was free and a pair of hemostats was able to grab the tab. It came out with a might tug.
Glad it worked out!!
Thank you! I tryed everything and this finally worked!
Glad it helped.
You did get free replacement parts from Moen didn’t you?
If not order now as it WILL happen again if you stay in the house long enough!
@@Foxtrot2500 no i didn’t i got them at Lowe’s. Should I just get it trough the moen website next time? What is the lifetime of the cartrige usually?
Great video, thanks! I don't have a tap and die set so I improvised with a 3/4 inch screw hook.
I started by breaking off the 2 plastic tabs and then rotated the cartridge with the plastic tool provided to break free. Then I heated the brass valve body with a hair dryer to expand and pulled the cartridge out with a vice grips. Quick and easy!
Maaannnn!!! you're awesome. worked like a charm. Thanks for that tip!!!
thanks man , i just went to store bought 13 32 carbide , mine was broken off simalar size buut it was so scetchy drilling into it and seemed like i needed a wider bit , the drill bit just slides right too the end i thought it was going to chew it up half was so i could pull so i just ended breaking away at it with needle nose pliers untill a small amount remained then i used socket driver with bolt that was size of drill bit
I am amazed that Moen continues to produce this valve body, it’s a flawed design.
HUGE HELP!!! Thank you very much for sharing.
Thanks for the idea... I had to use the next size up from 13/32 and only the black part from the middle came out 😣😣😢 back to the store tomorrow to get a way bigger bit and see what I can do about the rest of this mess.
Thank you for the video!
Hope it helped!
Thank you!! This worked for me!
Good Video!
Worked perfect thx
Thank you
After looking at this video, my main thought is that this cartridge design is poor. A cartridge with a design like this should not be allowed on the market.
Glad to help
Thanks!
Mine was a pain to remove. Replacement 1222 valve at Home Depot is $47.98! They must also sell quite a few of them because they have 2 rows of them on the pegboard/display shelf.
Same thing I noticed in my Home Depot.
Moen has to be the worst brand ever.
Hard water is the culprit, not the cartridge.
$45 for OEM at Lowes! Unconscionable, When you consider what you pay for these fixtures, to use such cheap plastic is a joke.
Did u call Moen and get a free Warranty Cartridge?
Call and they will send a freeby
Wait a year and order another one so you’ll have s spare
I'm not sure how you wiggled the drill bit to get the broken cartridge out. Did you use a vise grip to grab the drill bit? or by hand?
The plastic moen tool can’t rotate because the ears are recessed on the brass housing. Any suggestions how to rotate it?
Damn my whole metal piece came out
The plumber is absolutely right and also buy an oem cartridge
Almost exactly how mine broke.
Stem broke off: In my case the valve outer stem broke off. I made a Copper adapter tool as the neoprene adapter could not turn the inset. Broke out the plastic outer body then drilled. Had a heat knife for Styrofoam that cut the valve body enough to remove the rest of the material. Major PIA, Retired Plumber helped over the 3 hour project. Never did see why the valve was so stuck. Plumber 35 yrs He'd never seen a stem break off.
They ought to make a Brass replacement. Who'd want to do this again...
Oh yeah. The average homeowner is going to perform this annual maintenance.
1 thing that wasn't mentioned,... getting sprayed in the face as soon as I inserted the drill bit...lol....for me, the drill worked to remove the inner brass, but left all the plastic/rubber inside....I had to break off pieces little by little,. I put this cartridge in only a year and a half ago...not sure why it didn't last or why the plastic was very brittle. Luckily Moen will send me a free cartridge.
I suppose I should have bled the line before removing the handle....I thought bleeding the sink would he enough
Hopefully they pressure helped loosen it and flush debris
Still haveing trouble gettin rest of the brokein white pieces out. When the cartridge comes out is there only a open hole left ?
Mario Medina Yes only the empty “tube” is left
Would this work if the back end of the stem is still in the cartridge? My handle broke in the middle of the stem. Thanks.
thats my issue as well. I've seen a few videos where they drill holes in the plastic part on the front of the cartridge, then pull it out with screws. Others with the broken stem have gotten the cartridge out with needle nose pliers. What did you end up doing to remove the cartridge?
@@bobcobb158 if you're addressing me, I went with a guy on UA-cam who used a carefully placed screw on the front of the cartridge and a crowbar, and this worked without the cartridge breaking apart. It took quite a bit of time and careful prying so as not to be too rough on the rest of the plumbing. It was a booger, not like the one that came out in the guy's video: ua-cam.com/video/xErpfoeY-TA/v-deo.html
@@jgrrr9047 Hey, thanks for the reply. Yeah I managed to get a screw in the side of the plastic and then used a crowbar to pull the cartridge out to the point where I could grip it well enough with pliers to pull it the rest of the way out. Was a huge headache fighting through 11 years of hard-water buildup cementing that thing in there, but managed to get it done today. Thank God for UA-cam.
@@bobcobb158 Yes, that was my problem too ...the build up. Glad you got that done successfully. Thankful for the video and to God for His leading and help. God's grace to you.
@@jgrrr9047 God Bless you as well.
Cartridges are ridiculous.
We also had one of those old State water heaters that had failed and let plastic pieces get in the pipes that slowed the flow about 25 years ago.
While I had the cartridge out of the faucet, I closed the shower doors and turned the water back on for about 10 minutes.
That flushed out all those little pieces from the valve stem and we also found crap from the water heater. Our hot water pressure is now probably 50% better.
Be careful cause it blows out a lot of water under pressure.
Almost like a garden hose with a nozzle.
09/22/2018 Just had to replace the one I replaced in this video. The replacement was much easier. Notified Moen about a week to 10 days ago and MOEN sent me a new cartridge.
That IS CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!
Thanks Moen.
Moen says these are designed to wear out due to way it operates and the trash/calcium that gets in the water lines.
Thx for watching.
Yes as that’s what the drill finally hooks into.
I had my cordless drill torque turned down and as the drill bit “bit” in I stopped and wiggled it out with wiggling motion.
Glad it helped.
BTW
Don’t forget Moen has life time Warranty so call them and at least get free part
Glad it helped
