Hopeful Hyena oh, you mean David Gilmore? Technical perfection. Can’t write lyrics with bite to save his life. That’s what he needed Roger Waters (probably a triton, heh) for.
@@caerdwyn7467 You realise, that you're basically saying Gilmore doesn't play with any feeling right? Thus, you conclude, Gilmore has no emotion. Because his lyrics are shit. Maybe you don't know this, but the ability to play guitar does not have anything to do with the ability to write lyrics. ThorsShadow No, I meant exactly what I said. He is not a good lyricist. Technical skills do not preclude emotion and I never claimed otherwise. Emotion does not magically grant lyrical skills. Neither does guitar technical proficiency. Clear enough?

i usually get around the emotionless thing by making them objectivists that think they're above having such weak human things as emotions except they do in fact Have Emotions
Condescension requires one to think of others as ones lesser. The Tritons seem to think of others as dumber and weaker, but not necessarily lesser, seeing as they seem to want to help *because* of it.
Kobold + Druid + dog wildshape + beg grovel and cower = ULTIMATE PUPPY EYES POWER. This is the most powerful thing in the game and no one can prove me wrong.
If you ever get to play a lizardman, here's an RP gem you can use: All reptiles are lactose intolerant. They do not produce the enzyme lactase needed to dissolve lactose, so any dairy product they eat it's going to get out of their digestive tract in a hurry (one end or the other), otherwise the undigested sugars will just sit there in their stomachs, causing all sorts of complications (bloating, rotting, unbalance of the digestive flora, etc.) So yeah, something to keep in mind when packing rations or accepting that delightful cheese bite at the feast.
That makes it all the more absolutely fucking hilarious that the lizardfolk shaman in Goblin Slayer loves the hell out of cheese Then again he seems to be affiliated with dinosaurs so basically he's actually a bird?
I think you under sell how silly fast a tabaxi can be, even while climbing. If a tabaxi monk is standing at the bottom of a 180ft tall tree, they can be at the top of that tree in 1 round (6 seconds) without necessarily making a check. Monk adds +10 to 20 foot climb speed (per sage advice), Feline agility turns a 30ft climb speed into 60 ft. They can move, dash, and step of the wind straight to the top at like level 2. Of course, your party would need to call the fire department afterwards to get you down, but that's their problem.
I played a Triton Cleric who spoke in as much Shakespearean English as I could muster, because I really liked that quirk in the book, also whenever someone would call him a Fish, or a Fish Man he would say "I am a Triton, and you would do well to remember as such!" because technically Tritons as described in Volos aren't actually fish people, they're actually from the elemental plane of water and aren't actually fish, they have fish-like traits, but they themselves are not actual fish, which is why he did that so much.
Yeah, I have been crafting half-Troll races (3 so far). A Half-Troll/ Half-Elf, a Half-Troll/Half-Triton, and a Half-Troll/Half-Hobgoblin. The Half-Elf and Half-Hobgoblin races were fairly straight forward (Half-elf used as cannon fodder by an elf kingdom, Half-Hobgoblin used as elite front line soldiers and extremely evil in nature) but the Half-Triton has been the most fun. The Tritons' nature makes the thought of mistreating some race they made to aid in their constant war against monsters unthinkable, and in all, the Tritons just have the best martial culture to draw on. Heck, there is the quote most commonly used for them made by a ship captain in universe "Ah, The Tritons. Imagine, if the Elves spent a few centuries far beneath the sea, where their arrogance and pretension could grow undisturbed. At least the tritons spent that time fighting sahuagin and worse, so you know you can count on them in a fight." Seriously, if I can't get my DM to let me use one of my Half-Troll races, I am playing a Triton.
Love it, also rolled the Old English trait. I had the idea of a Triton Warlock with the Celetial Patron, having dreams to fly, but being on land he NEEDS to tell people how great his People are and about the Celestial Patron in the sky. Sky and Ocean, I roll to see which I ramble about.
My first ever D&D charakter was a Triton Paladin. It was really fun playing him. I played him like a mix of greek warrior and philosoph with a very kind heart. Tritons are by far my favourite race.

@@jasonduncan7630 this had my rolling for a good 5 minutes XD I had no idea this was possible and now all I want to see is this being used in a D&D video. Just the shear absurdity of a monk going from zero to breaking the sound barrier in the matter of seconds would be hilarious. Your basically quicksilver from that xmen movie.
Lmao, someone needs to make a red furred Tabaxi with a natural lightning bolt pattern in his fur, on his chest, and name him some old word meaning flash or speed. Or actually, I think in Tabaxi, The Flash can actually cannonly work with their naming conventions. The Monk would even fit with them considering he mainly punches things.
I played a Kenku bard for a one shot I was in. Real fun experience! He never created pieces of his own, but instead was basically a tape recorder for other bardic tunes. He mostly communicated with others with a mix of charades and noises (e.g. "there are guards nearby" = the sound of clinking armor + pointing). If a word was too complicated but necessary, the DM let me say it as long as I did it with some funny accent. Communication was a bit of a puzzle at some points, but honestly a blast. I definitely want to play him again so I can fully utilize his illusion spells and make noises with them for some real trickery. Anyway great video! Volo's Guide is honestly my favorite with a lot of fun races.
My favorite part of being a Goliath is that if I end up fighting a monster who is unarmed without a natural weapon built into their body or magic, I am honorbound to just toss my axe aside and beat the shit out of them unarmed. The constant need for a level playing field is great because you will be able to handicap yourself, bit by bit. Fighting a warrior one on one? No fancy magics. FIghting a monster with only one arm? Cross one behind your back and take out your one handed axe.
I play a 6ft goliath fighter who was born with manism, dated an elf guy who died, and now adventures to resurrect his lover and prove that he is still strong while short and hes depressed and cold and cynical and I love him so much
I have been wanting to play my Lizardfolk Rogue/Ranger for AGES NOW! Story wise: Vargach is his name. He lives with the rest of his tribe in an underground, bioluminescent, fungal swamp. His scales, like all from his tribe, glow and blink vibrant colors at will (my replacement for thieves cant since he is going to be scout Rogue). The campaign I play him in really determines what drove him out/away. (Any ideas would be greatly appreciated). Mechanically: Eventually 6 Expertise skills. Longbow with sneak attack and hunters mark. I would want to take the Healer (fungal swamp medicines) or Alert feat. Sharpshooter would also be nice. Hunter with cool perks and so on. My dream character that I haven’t been able to play because I’ve been DMing for every D&D nerd I know🤣
I feel your pain for the longest time I have been wanting to play either my Albino Kobold Wild Magic Sorceror that was banished because he killed the chieftain's child in self preservation or my Changeling Necromancer that believes in asking permission from the owners of the body before raising them. Well at least soon I will bring in my Kobold.
I’ve been waiting ages to put my loredrake kobold wizard to good use too! His names Kip. Coincidentally, he lives on an island of teal grass in a bioluminescent lake deep underground. He was forced out of his home by X event, with extra slaughter. His personality can only be explained as “Violent disembowlement is a suitable punishment for stealing my cheese. Ooo is that gold?” It’s cool to see how many other people want to play unique characters.
I don't mind the hate, both in and out of the D&D world, it actually made for one hell of a time as my kobold monk with a Napoleon complex the size of Russia became more feared than the Half-Orc, Golioth, and Dragonborn in the group.
I agree. Kobolds are actually really heroic. If a clan if attacked, one kobold will stay behind to slow down the attackers so that everyone else can escape. HOW ARE THEY MORE EVIL THAN LIZARDFOLK?
@@GrassPokeKing It was a girl but yes, pretty much here is the story ( btw it was homebrew ) We had just started a new Champaign and we had the friend planning to join us next session we’ll it begins and at the moment we’re heading though a swampy area and we stumble upon them dealing with some hunters, defeat the hunters ( they had already caused trouble for us once before ) and their character joined us, to the discomfort of our monk. The character was created by one of the big bads of the game, who had been trying to buff up monsters with magic and chemicals It was a while back so I can’t remember the entire story
A lizardfolk character that is also a wizard could be awesome in a lot of ways.. Rather than the typical "I want to know the secrets of the world because knowledge!!!!" how neat would it be if their search for knowledge is a way to experience something they litterally can't experience..love, anger, happiness, sadness and fear..aka emotions.. Their only mission in life is learning how to feel something in order to understand something that is so alien to them. I feel like that would be one cool and facinating backstory that could explain why they left their tribe as well seeing that they probably won't be able to learn it from their brothers or sisters since they have the same "flaw" in their life. It would litterally be you playing as a phychopath that don't want to be a phychopath anymore just because he is facinated with it not nessesarily because he finds it wrong but because it is a cool concept for him. I could see it being cool also suddenly being able to actually learn how to feel (Guessing through a wish spell I would imagine is the only thing that could do it) would be another fun roleplay aspect. How the fuck would someone who have never felt sad before in their life react to suddenly feeling lose and sadness over losing one of their allices in battle because they seriously respected them..
Played a lizardman once that occasionally put on a "ring of overwhelming emotions", which was originally meant to be a gag item from the GM as it was meant to be a reward from a quest. The receiving person was overwhelmed with gratitude and cried in thanks and the like.... When I put it on, I just felt normal emotions. It was weird, so I took it off, but at several points in the future, put it back on to roleplay mourn with my comrades.
Funny thing, I’m playing a Goliath Open Hand Monk named Variak in an Eberron game. Usually Friday’s, but sometimes we go Twice a week with Monday AND Friday because we have to cancel one night. Variak is just a big hearted boy who left the mountains to live jn a small country side town, where he learned to cook and brew ale. He only left to adventure after he got tired of constant praise he was recieving after wrestling a rampaging owlbear to the ground. End goal for thus boy? Earn enough coin to open his own tavern and inn, where he can just have people enjoy good food, good drink, MAYBE a good bar fight, all with bright smiles. Last session (on the 26th kf June), he got trapped with a bunch of party ghosts and was just a screaming big boi with a Texan Accent, trying desperately to get out of that room and away from the whispering ghosts that coaxed him with a feast. More stuff happened, including a role play moment with an NPC that legit scares Variak and Me, and my big boi earned inspiration that session at the nomination of the other players.
My first character I ever played was a triton swashbuckler named, Joran Mernimier. He was so adorkable as one minute he'd valiantly rush to someone's aid no matter the foe, the next, he'd be screaming for help because he'd someone always managed to get himself into the worst possible outcome. Even though he was a pirate, he had a huge soft spot for smaller races and Orc folks and often would often anonymously pay off tabs for folks in taverns. He was a successful pirate on the high seas and captain-d his own ship, though often would go through bouts of depression and go upon shore to seek adventures of a different sort. (Every so often the DM worked it out for bizarre and random reunions with his crew and weaved it into the main story line.) He first met his onshore adventuring group after being slap about face after attempting to ask out a barmaid.... his super high charisma stats made him an instant recruit and honestly, he probably was one of the funniest characters I ever had the joy to play. Highly recommend them if you're seeking to play and quirky yet incredibly charismatic character.
we need a better video for the kenku, too many DM's intentionally screw over the mimicry ability. then you have to have an argument with them about how its practically the same thing but weaker than variant human warlock with the actor feat since as a kenku warlock you dont get auto advantage on disguise, you have less proficiency skills, and no racial bonus to charisma so you are already behind. so salty he ok'd a human variant warlock that worshiped the raven queen but not a kenku that did the same thing
OK! Now I want to play a lizard now! 🦎 This is the best description for them yet! It would have to be to actually pry me loose from my chant of Tabaxi, Tabaxi and nothing but Tabaxi!!! 😻
My favorite race in Volos guide to monsters is in fact the Tabaxi, somewhat for their abilities, but mostly for there interesting and unique traits. This is a race that values curiosity, like strange mystery or unique tales, more than gold. This gives so many different takes on established ideas. Like a Charlotte Tabaxi haggling with a customer to trade gold for a book, but this book is the customers and the Tabaxi are trying to get it. Or a thief Tabaxi stealing strange looking things over riches due to their values. They will abandon artifacts worth millions of gold pieces once they felt they knew all that it held, while keeping junk that still fascinates them. Its a unique take that leads to a lot of subversion's from the tradition party way.
Lolol a Triton Bard, "My much lauded Whalesong did not go over as well as it normally does....... these land dewllers must be idiots!" "MMMMMmmmmMmmwwWWWUUUUUUAAAAAAUUUUGGGHHMMMmmmmmm....mmMmmmmmmmwwwwwwwwuuuuuuuaaaaauuuuaaaaggghhhuuuuhhhnnnnmmmmm........that was the best part and they didn't even applaud..."
I'm using a lizarfolk in Pathfinder currently and so far Fighter 7/Bloodrager 1. I like the character since I haven't played a melee heavy styled character in quite a while. It's nice being able to walk up and hit enemies with a halberd doing 1d10+8(1.5 str for handed weapon(+6 total), +1 weapon training, +1 enhancement)+ 1d6 acid from corrosive enchantment. My DM hates that I can chunk big enemies or even almost one shot them with a crit.
Davvy, I love your content alot. Literally I've seen all your videos at least 5 times. But man you use dozens of art pieces without a single credit. No pined comment or anything. Please credit the artists, maybe a Pinterest link to a new board for all the art used in your video with credits and links? I just really don't want to lose the ability to binge your videos when I'm stoned as hell cause of someone claiming copyright or art theft lol. Keep it up man! I love the content
Malcom Hansford I’m surprised that this message is in this video, since I purposefully only chose pictures that were: 1. Official art from tabletop games like WotC/Pathfinder 2. Pictures from media (movies, games) 3. Memes and stock images I actively stayed away from any fan art or original artworks that didn’t appear in any official books. Even if you go back and check some of my guides (warlock guide, for instance) I have actually gone through and added a google doc with all the credits I could find. When I started UA-cam, I was just making these videos for the few people I ran D&D for. I wasn’t expecting any popularity to come out of it, so I never worried about things like this. Now that my videos are getting way more views than I had ever hoped for, I’m taking a couple hours each day to fix each video.
Malcom Hansford This comment was also posted verbatim in my divination guide? That video was pretty much all screenshots from the wiki. I recognize that you totally could have not seen the credits I added (I admittedly haven’t gotten to many videos), I’m just confused by which videos you chose to comment on. Either way, I’m glad that you made the posts regardless, because it let me show that I am actually trying to make things better.
@@DavvyChappy thanks for the reply, first time I've ever had a big one reply to me actually... I commented it twice because I thought you weren't likely to see the first as it was on an older video. From what I know about Planescape, the Tabaxi Cat Loard, is probly one of the manu Beast-Loards; lesser deitys from the BeastLands, (the Netral/Chaotic-Good afterlife.) Who represent the perfect version of an animal.
Aasimar- I prefer to see them as being mortals with divine ancestry, the descendants of half-celestials. I also feel that Aasimar and Tiefling should have stayed as something you could add on top of your base race. Powerful Build- the race is just shy of being considered Large sized, they still have to duck to enter a human sized door but still fit within the 5'X5' square.
The players I DM for wanted to get creative when we started a semi-serious roleplay heavy game. Their party is made up of: • 2 High Elves • 1 Wood Elf • 1 Water Genasi • 1 Pixie • 1 Loxodon • 1 Mousefolk • 1 Warforged We literally don’t even have a human. As a DM, I have 100% made sure they know and feel like they stand out in human, Elf and dwarf settlements especially. If anything, they find it exciting because they feel special, even when their characters are discriminated against. They end up only solidifying their companionship with each other when this happens, even in societies where their specific character is the majority population. It’s a band of misfits no matter where they go and it’s made for some really amazing natural character develop moments
Love the video, just have to say that the way you pronounce one of the races names grates me so hard for some reason. Aasimar - The double a at the beginning is a soft a as in "dawn"
With a company being based in an English-speaking country where one of the more common names is Aaron, they should've known to spell it in a different way to be fair.
I've always wanted to play a tabaxi, but I was too self conscious to play the stereotypical furry race. Recently I was playing a runty Goliath artificer based on Hiccup from How To Train Your Dragon, who was a fun character for a few sessions. Unfortunately a run in with a magical deck of cards that left my character in a coma which lasted for the rest of the session, which I spent on the edge of my seat as the party raced against the clock trying to save me. Inevitably, the coma ended after slowly shape-shifting me into a random new race- Tabaxi. Dear God this game is amazing 👏
Totally looking forward to your Monstrous Races video. Hobgoblin has got to be my favorite monstrous playable race, and I'm itching to hear how you describe them
Kobold bard. The twist is they were deaf and had to use little floating silver hoops(looked like a halo). They used them as part of the roleplaying experience and why she could survive thunderwave and her own juicy bass drops. Made for some really interesting rp and combat interactions.
fun fact, i actually picked up volo's guide thanks to critical role. i really loved caduceus clay and nila (both firbolgs) and wanted to make my own... i wound up falling in love with the triton race and making a triton sorcerer... who i've since deleted from dndbeyond bc i'm not doing premium and needed to clear up space (+i haven't played at all X'D)
A bit counter point to the tabaxi spending a turn not moving for double speed, I think it would lead to a similar problem as true strike, you know, I can spend 2 turns to roll 2 dice, but I would’ve done that anyway and it had the potential to twice the damage output if I didn’t cast the spell It’s the same thing but with movement speed, I could spend 2 turns moving 60 feet, or... spend 2 turns to move 60 feet... so while I understand the concept of a cat pouncing, mechanically not moving for a whole turn to get double movement the next turn seems like it wouldn’t do much to help, maybe if you were planning to dash that turn it would help but that still costs an action meaning you won’t be able to attack whatever you were trying to catch up with in the first place (depending on class of course)
Imagine if they added the more Infernal races from the Fiend Folio and Monsters of Faerûn, like the Maeluth, Fey-Ri, Tanarukk, and Wispling(Dwarf, Elf, Orc, Halfling).
I mean. I played as a Kenku Bard named "Haaa" (Exhale) We gave him the ability to think creativity again just to make things easier, but was unable to mimic voices or speak as a trade off. He communicated in charades which was actually really fun.
My current DnD party is playing OOTA and we decided as a group that we would all be a weird family of Firbolgs. And damn is it fun. I have never used the racial traits of a character more than this race. I am a Dream Druid, we also have a Forge Cleric, War Cleric, a Warlock/Sorcerer, a Wild Socerer, and a Gloomstalker Ranger. Our family tree is also very weird. Firbolgs are actually really fun, although i was a little skeptical when the idea was first brought up. Also we have a joke now that we are just walking cows cause they kinda look like it.
So at least in my campaign I've actually ditched the restriction on kenku not being able to talk or think originally since even real crows are capable of doing both. However the flying thing is awesome so I've absolutely kept that.
One of my favourite ideas for a Kenku is a Drunken Master Monk who learned to fight by copying drunk guys in the local tavern. He doesn't actually get drunk, he just doesn't realise there are other ways to fight, since that's all he has seen. Maybe I'd give him Tavern Brawler too at a later level.
I play a kenku cleric who Was raised to celebrate death as it was the end of someone's suffering. So to help people not think they were all insane he began running a undead circus.
Technically, when Volo's came out, neither the Aasimar nor the Goliath were new races, though the Aasimar is pretty heavily modified from it's initial appearance in the DMG. Goliath was in the Elemental Evil players guide.
You forgot to mention that Tabaxi can be made into the fastest runners in the entire game, topping out at 238971.3 Feet Per Second, which is roughly mach 212 or 0.02% the speed of light. _You can actually make a Tabaxi that can move so fast that they would realistically start to experience appreciable relativistic effects._
I use the books that add races in a more complex way... my fourth campaign for my group has the elf war from the second campaign lead up to what is going on in the fourth and it also includes the rebellion from the third which (since players sided with elves) had the elves increase defense in all cities towns etc...
My triton bard has gone from a throwaway to my favorite PC. He's a cultural ambassador from the seas beneath Velen and he swears like a sailor because he learned common from sailors.
Should a nice sub race for Lizardfolk were lizard, snake, of frog like lizards can hide more effectively and heal from bites. Snakes have a bonus to intimidate or speed and can deal more damage and poison with there bite. Frogs can jump really high and contain the things in there mouth.
The Tabaxi sprint makes sense because cats are... Sprinters. To sprint is to move in a sudden boost of speed after which you usually need to rest. So they sprint, rest, sprint, rest, sprint, rest. It's actually, naturally meant to be spammed even. A wolf will wear you down, a big cat will take you out as quickly as... Catly? Possible.
I have been rather interested in playing a lizardfolk. Working on making one right now as well. His social quirk is he has learned how to laugh. When ever there is a emotional response he will laugh as a means to fit in. I havent thought of any others i like.

I had no idea this was possible and now all I want to see is this being used in a D&D video.
Goliath has +2 strength and +1 constitution, not the other way around.

It was a girl but yes, pretty much here is the story ( btw it was homebrew )
We had just started a new Champaign and we had the friend planning to join us next session we’ll it begins and at the moment we’re heading though a swampy area and we stumble upon them dealing with some hunters, defeat the hunters ( they had already caused trouble for us once before ) and their character joined us, to the discomfort of our monk.
The character was created by one of the big bads of the game, who had been trying to buff up monsters with magic and chemicals
It was a while back so I can’t remember the entire story
A lizard wizard
Looking forward to playing my Firbolg Cleric in an upcoming campaign. It'll be fun
(Every so often the DM worked it out for bizarre and random reunions with his crew and weaved it into the main story line.)
He first met his onshore adventuring group after being slap about face after attempting to ask out a barmaid.... his super high charisma stats made him an instant recruit and honestly, he probably was one of the funniest characters I ever had the joy to play.
That's why my gold standard for building a race is is thwir a reason to play this instead of a human.
OK! Now I want to play a lizard now! 🦎
This is the best description for them yet!
It would have to be to actually pry me loose from my chant of Tabaxi, Tabaxi and nothing but Tabaxi!!! 😻
Looking forward to the section on monstrous races. The Goblins, Bugbears and Hobgoblins especially.
Funny thing is, both the lizardfolk and the kenku are in the monster manual, so they should both be considered monstrous races!
(in my opinion), Every Race in Volo's guide is all way cooler than the races in the player's handbook.
Lolol a Triton Bard, "My much lauded Whalesong did not go over as well as it normally does.......

Malcom Hansford I was literally about to type this.
Malcom Hansford I’m surprised that this message is in this video, since I purposefully only chose pictures that were:
1. Official art from tabletop games like WotC/Pathfinder
2. Pictures from media (movies, games)
3. Memes and stock images
I actively stayed away from any fan art or original artworks that didn’t appear in any official books.
Bug Bears is like oxymoron as a race. How can these big furry long armed goblins both be stealthy as fuck and be super strong?
I needed this soo badly
Aasimar- I prefer to see them as being mortals with divine ancestry, the descendants of half-celestials. I also feel that Aasimar and Tiefling should have stayed as something you could add on top of your base race.
Powerful Build- the race is just shy of being considered Large sized, they still have to duck to enter a human sized door but still fit within the 5'X5' square.
The players I DM for wanted to get creative when we started a semi-serious roleplay heavy game. Their party is made up of:
• 2 High Elves
• 1 Wood Elf
• 1 Water Genasi
• 1 Pixie
• 1 Loxodon
• 1 Mousefolk
• 1 Warforged
We literally don’t even have a human.
Dear God this game is amazing 👏

i wound up falling in love with the triton race and making a triton sorcerer... who i've since deleted from dndbeyond bc i'm not doing premium and needed to clear up space (+i haven't played at all X'D)
Kenku's are my personal favorite race.
They are actually my most hated race. Only slightly edging out the Tabaxi.
I felt in love with them after seeing Pluck from Dark & Dicey.
kenkus are the minions of dnd
Tabaxi are so cheesy.
Dangerously cheesy.
It is catastrophic
The Tabaxi speed feature doubles all movement (which means quadruple when you move + dash at the same time).
A bit counter point to the tabaxi spending a turn not moving for double speed, I think it would lead to a similar problem as true strike, you know, I can spend 2 turns to roll 2 dice, but I would’ve done that anyway and it had the potential to twice the damage output if I didn’t cast the spell
It’s the same thing but with movement speed, I could spend 2 turns moving 60 feet, or... spend 2 turns to move 60 feet... so while I understand the concept of a cat pouncing, mechanically not moving for a whole turn to get double movement the next turn seems like it wouldn’t do much to help, maybe if you were planning to dash that turn it would help but that still costs an action meaning you won’t be able to attack whatever you were trying to catch up with in the first place (depending on class of course)
Playing a UA Ranger Lizardfolk has lead to a lot of great roll play... and incredibly awkward lunches.
Awesome video, I can’t wait for part 2 to come out! :)
Just got done playing a Tabaxi Barbarian and it’s honestly been one of the most fun campaigns I’ve played so far
8:03 Ohmygosh. It's Frumpkin disguised as Nott. Too cute~
Goliaths back then: Too niche to be hugely useful
Goliaths now: Much more useful, seriously, that cold damage resistance is amazing
In my first campaign there was a Firbolg npc, he was adorable and sweet
My current DnD party is playing OOTA and we decided as a group that we would all be a weird family of Firbolgs. And damn is it fun. I have never used the racial traits of a character more than this race. I am a Dream Druid, we also have a Forge Cleric, War Cleric, a Warlock/Sorcerer, a Wild Socerer, and a Gloomstalker Ranger. Our family tree is also very weird.
Firbolgs are actually really fun, although i was a little skeptical when the idea was first brought up. Also we have a joke now that we are just walking cows cause they kinda look like it.
Goliath Kensei Monk, utterly indestructible and some of the most fun I've had playing in the last year
So at least in my campaign I've actually ditched the restriction on kenku not being able to talk or think originally since even real crows are capable of doing both.
Currently on my first d&d campaign playing a lizardfolk sun monk. One of the best decisions I ever made, and roleplaying him is beyond fun.
I play a kenku cleric who Was raised to celebrate death as it was the end of someone's suffering. So to help people not think they were all insane he began running a undead circus.
The lizardmen look really cool and in line with what I have heard about actual lizards
so glad to have an overview on all of these races, love the scalies and furries
Technically, when Volo's came out, neither the Aasimar nor the Goliath were new races, though the Aasimar is pretty heavily modified from it's initial appearance in the DMG. Goliath was in the Elemental Evil players guide.
You forgot to mention that Tabaxi can be made into the fastest runners in the entire game, topping out at 238971.3 Feet Per Second, which is roughly mach 212 or 0.02% the speed of light. _You can actually make a Tabaxi that can move so fast that they would realistically start to experience appreciable relativistic effects._
Perfectly agree about lizardfolk. They seems so interesting!
"RIP in peace hyena boi"
*sad gnoll sounds*
I use the books that add races in a more complex way... my fourth campaign for my group has the elf war from the second campaign lead up to what is going on in the fourth and it also includes the rebellion from the third which (since players sided with elves) had the elves increase defense in all cities towns etc...
i played a fun lizardfolk druid once. she really "liked" (cold and unfeeling lizard) looking after her soft-ones and helping them in battle.
Aasimar sounds like ASMR
My triton bard has gone from a throwaway to my favorite PC. He's a cultural ambassador from the seas beneath Velen and he swears like a sailor because he learned common from sailors.

Tabaxi has wares, if you have coin.

Kenkuo, the meme lords of D&D.

Triton's are going to be amazing with the Next D&D campaign book coming out.
Lizardfolk Barbarian = OP. You get 13 Base Ac, then add unarmored defense. Like, add a shield and you got a 22 AC at 1st level.
Tabaxi Monks are REDICULOUSLY fast tho.
With a few low level magic items and the right feats you can basically build the flash on bathsalts.
