When a Republican says they want to make Social Security 'better', they mean 'better' so they can lower taxes even more for their wealthy donors by cutting benefits to old people trying to live on $1,000 a month.

First of all, the rich Wall Street investment firms and managers will get a big cut from managing the social security portfolio. Secondly, we can all see how volatile the financial market in the past 12 months, not to mention the 1978 foreign exchange crises, year 2000 tech bubble, 2008 subprime crisis and Credit Default Swap crisis…your name it all. Those billionaires still keep their cuts, only investors lost all their holdings. There are 2 very simple things that congress could do to make SS solvent for years to come. First they need to pay back the money that they borrowed from Social Security over the years. Second they need to eliminate the tax limit on Social Security. Currently the Social Security limit on taxable income is $160,200. That means that you only pay SS tax on the first $160,200 of income. This cap should be set at least to $500k.

@@tetleydidley Because we paid for the generation before us as well, while that generation also typically had pensions. I'm not retired yet but I am certain that I will get there before you based on your comment, but we face similar circumstances. Nearly none of us in the private sector have pensions, and all of us have faced mounting debt that has come from higher costs for everything that have "surprisingly" paralleled persistent tax cuts for the rich that go all the way back to Reagan's presidency. The answer is simple and that is to raise the cap on ss taxable income. I am not sure what that threshold should be, but it needs to be much more than it is today. Let's not fight each other and let the rich keep picking our pockets while they do their best to politically zip theirs shut.

As it is now, middle class people pay a higher percentage of their income into Social Security than people with above average incomes. Why? There's no good reason for the tax disparity that favors the well-to-do. They could also look at modifying benefits at retirement for people who already have high incomes and no need for Social Security payments whatsoever.

Having a cap is just like trying to have a National Sales Tax while eliminating the Income Tax, it penalizes the middle-class and working poor who pay more of money as a percentage of total pay. Removing the cap would put BILLIONS extra into SS. We could even find a way to mesh SS/Medicare together and have the basis for M4A.
