- Sen. Mike Rounds (R-SD) discusses President Biden's criticism of some Republican plans for Social Security, including one Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) has proposed. #CNN #News
When a Republican says they want to make Social Security 'better', they mean 'better' so they can lower taxes even more for their wealthy donors by cutting benefits to old people trying to live on $1,000 a month.
Yeah, while we all support their rich asses with our tax dollars. Make the 0.01‰ pay their fair share & make them pay the same tax rates for Social Security & Medicare that we all do. They will all surely collect on it when they're eligible!
One of Biden's first actions in office was to raise the price of insulin. 😒
And Biden wanted to get rid of it......
ua-cam.com/video/3UoCf6NU3uY/v-deo.html
The problem with the current republican party is that all they want to do is talk about the issues without actually putting in the work necessary in order to bring about solutions that will directly and effectively impact the lives of the American people they claim to represent.
I don’t understand why this is even a discussion when this is clearly coming out of the pockets of the working class. If anything, ask US the people what we want to do about Social Security. And if they do want to get rid of it, they better cut me a check because I want every penny that I paid into it back.
RIGHT?!
This is exactly what I’ve been talking about. Glad I’m not alone.
Its a non issue .... Didnt you watch the Presidents speech and how the house yelled back at the lie
The point is the Republicans want to screw everybody the can to give a tax break to the rich! They careless about me and you.
Because the employer matches the individual deduction of the employee. If that was not done the corporations would pocket that and give it to their corporate officers and rich stock holders. It's call corporate greed.
Old people work their entire lives and pay into social security now these monsters plan to take away what folk have already paid for . Do we get a cashier's check ?
The point is factually, even if seniors got a cheque for amount paid over 40 years working, in lieu of SS, it would be peanuts compared to living costs, and obviously not linked to years of retirement life. GOP think that would be a good solution , one and done. Gop would love that solution.
SS is a Ponzi scheme. There's no money in the so-called SS Trust Fund, just a bunch of IOUs.
Keep in mind they could just print the money...
@@Cettywise Printing money causes inflation.
CNN/MSNBC and socialist democrats want to blow this up as EVERY conservative wants to cut SS. It’s simply not true. As usual, it’s propaganda to keep you 🐑 under control
Privatizing social security is just another way of saying billionaires get to snatch your money and our tax dollars
More corporate pie for more greedy legislative fingers.
Of course. Just give it to them so they can get a percentage while they already have more than any ten people need in a lifetime. It's never enough for the grotesquely rich
Can you imagine someone like Sam Bankman-Fried in charge of social security?
Do Republicans really think letting Wall Street money managers managing the social security portfolio is less risky than US Treasury managing their book? First of all, the rich Wall Street investment firms and managers will get a big cut from managing the social security portfolio. Secondly, we can all see how volatile the financial market in the past 12 months, not to mention the 1978 foreign exchange crises, year 2000 tech bubble, 2008 subprime crisis and Credit Default Swap crisis…your name it all. Those billionaires still keep their cuts, only investors lost all their holdings. Are we going to let them to play with the Social Security fund and subject the retired people to such risky volatile market? Who is going to bail us out if the market tanks? We, tax payers, have to cover their back , and yet those Republican billionaires don’t even want to pay their fair share!

Yeah that's all this guy had to do and he would have looked strong and made the Republican party look better. But did he do that simple thing? Of course not.
It’s way past time for Americans to be enjoying universal healthcare. If members of Congress were forced to have the exact same healthcare as us, do you think this would even be an issue?
I have been stating this for YEARS and in fact just made that same statement on another platform this morning...
Agreed.
We externals look on from the developed world and can’t believe it!
And the “socialism” tag! It’s friggin tax money!
Take 10% from the military budget and you’re well on the way!
Exactly, it's funny financially secure (wealthy) and healthcare covered politicians talk BS about Social Security like this clown and others....
hm, my country got universal health care since 1883, you country is the last by a long distance!
All of the members of Congress and the Senate should be paying for their own health insurance coverage just like everybody else. Why should we put the bill for them. We need single-payer universal healthcare and Republicans will never go for it as long as their health insurance is covered.
How many of you know that if a person in 2022 made over $147,000 per year, that person is limited to pay into Social Security only $9,114 no matter how much they made over that $147K. You can make $500,000 per year and only be required to pay $9,114. Making those that are getting away with pay their share of it, would generate $983B in additional revenue.
Not a word about this in this conversation. As if that is off the table. The Republicans want to keep that cap as is. The cap should be lifted all together.
After 12 years these politicians receive a retirement fund with a big number attached to that account.
Trump only served 4 years in office but as POTUS he will receive 60k per year in social security retirement fund for the rest of his life, not to mention free secret service protection. And he has dodged paying taxes into the program his whole life.
Bernie has said this for Effing years! Keep voting blue America. 💙
Exactly! This needs to be talked about often and loudly!
Stop 🛑 calling them entitlement plans! We’ve paid for those plans 😡
What happened to the social security money when the person die that were drawing it , where do it go to ?
When I hear any politician, especially a Republican say they want to help SS, what I hear is "let us manage your money you've paid into Social Security, and we'll take care of it". That is very scary to me and anyone who knows the Republican track record on doing anything to help the poor, elderly or anything that assists those less fortunate. The rich are the ones who benefit from Republican "management" of anything , which is why I'm always baffled at the poor who vote for them in our area despite that fact.
If you were smart you’d understand this is 100% fear mongering, nothing less. If you did even a little bit of research you’d know this is all fake news.
@@tioswift3676 if you were smart you would realize that Rick Scott's plan is in black and white . I have read it, and what the President said is there for anyone to read. Perhaps you should consider watching more news sources other than Fox and Newsmax.

Those Republican Representatives who wants to Sunset Social Security are Jokers 👌🏽
Managing it = cuts...
Exactly
There are 2 very simple things that congress could do to make SS solvent for years to come. First they need to pay back the money that they borrowed from Social Security over the years. Second they need to eliminate the tax limit on Social Security. Currently the Social Security limit on taxable income is $160,200. That means that you only pay SS tax on the first $160,200 of income. This cap should be set at least to $500k.
Why can't boomers pay for their own retirement? Why must we pay for yours but by the time our generation retires, we would have none of the benefits that we've paid in?
Simple and justified solutions are never applied. Don't borrow against the funds! And just raise the income level for contributions
@@tetleydidley Because we paid for the generation before us as well, while that generation also typically had pensions. I'm not retired yet but I am certain that I will get there before you based on your comment, but we face similar circumstances. Nearly none of us in the private sector have pensions, and all of us have faced mounting debt that has come from higher costs for everything that have "surprisingly" paralleled persistent tax cuts for the rich that go all the way back to Reagan's presidency. The answer is simple and that is to raise the cap on ss taxable income. I am not sure what that threshold should be, but it needs to be much more than it is today. Let's not fight each other and let the rich keep picking our pockets while they do their best to politically zip theirs shut.
First you need to raise the taxable limit to $500k over the next 5 years and stop the GOP from selling off the middle-class to enrich their excessively wealthy donors! Y'all talk like you're a democracy but that remains to be proven. If you don't vote blue in 2024, what little bit of democracy you now have will be immediately ended with the election of the rethuglican party.
No cap for Millionaires, the rich are already making us poor, Govt the only way to fix it and they know it.
Like Bernie Sanders stated, social security is not an investment product, it’s an insurance policy. If the rich are forced pay their share we’d be where we need to be to keep social security solvent.
Yeah, he doesn’t want to scare anyone but warned anyone in their early 50s that in 11 years they’ll be out of luck. Also loved how he didn’t answer the question at all and Tapper just sat there
Rick scott wants to know every 5 years if Social Security is worth keeping??? Well he certainly is NOT worth keeping! Get rid of that clown! 🤬

He would throw seniors out of the life boat because his rich donors would reward him for the inevitable tax cuts.

Social Security was collecting more in payroll taxes than it paid out for over 30 years. The feds used the surplus as a source of loans by investing the huge amount of surplus money in treasury bills, a poor investment for the fund but a fantastic deal for the government.

Typical of Rounds. Talk from both sides of his mouth so as not to be pinned down or have to commit to a position. Now he can tell Rick Scott he agrees with him and he can tell other people he agrees SS shouldn't be touched.
They're really good at that, but they haven't caught on that we know they're doing it.
Not just that, he literally helped him say what he wanted at various points. The Senator WAS saying SS should be cut in various ways and CNN is helping set the narrative that all those changes should be open for discussion. Tapper voluntarily raised all sorts of ideas for how SS could be diminished in order to short-change and overwork newer generations.
It's truly disgusting to watch if you know what they're both getting at; Rounds AND Tapper.

3 of the poorest counties are on Indian reservations in South Dakota. If South Dakota residents have a good retirement plan, I'd be curious to see how well the Indians are doing.
Mike Lee didn't say he wanted to "manage" social security... he clearly said he wanted to end it... speaking with forked tongues
Yes, yes, he wants to get rid of Social Security and Medicare, etc. Anything that would help the low income, and makes the Rich more Rich.
Typical republican dancing around the questions and refusing to own up to their hypocrisy. All he said is that social security should be regulated better but every time he was asked how he wants to do it he danced around it and changed the subject.
One no brainer is to remove the tax cap that's a gift to people with higher incomes, some of whom are extraordinarily wealthy. As it is now, middle class people pay a higher percentage of their income into Social Security than people with above average incomes. Why? There's no good reason for the tax disparity that favors the well-to-do. They could also look at modifying benefits at retirement for people who already have high incomes and no need for Social Security payments whatsoever.
We don't fund SS like we fund the DOD. What if the DOD needed to look at "other" sources of funding? Its all government.
If we did, retiree's would never worry.
So if this is some kind of attempt to eliminate Social Security what's the point of people even working in the first place🤔
Work until you die. Then there is no need for social security OR Medicare. - GOP Social Security Plan
I watched a document on When social security was put in place. Republicans called FDR "communist". Here we're almost a century later, Republicans never gave up, although many of Americans rely on social security checks.
If??? For GOP, the problem is people are not dying at age 50 anymore, too many disabled in middle aged, and kids needing help. Just think of a commercial chicken "farm"? Breed, lay eggs, eat, repeat. a bit harsh and crude maybe ....
It gives people incentive to work under the table and not have to pay taxes. Social Security is calculated using work/ earning history for future payouts. If Social Security goes away, then why work to pay fed taxes. Just work with a hand shake deal and skip big brother.
@@AccidentalHiker1 True. SS is based on the meticulously recorded incomes of the middle and low earning workers. I doubt if anyone in Congress or in Senate is relying on SS, and remember, trump paid about $700 in tax?
147.00 bucks is the cutoff. At that point no more SS is gathered. Change that number to 156,000 bucks and you fund SS through the next century...
How hard is that...? 4.6 % rise in withholding rates will do the trick.
The way to shore up social security is to Eliminate the Social Security Tax Cap.
"Management" That can mean a lot of things...including "managing" it out of existence which is what the GOP has wanted since the New Deal came to existence.
We can manage Social Security if everyone pays their share of taxes
He said thare are other programs that was changed and made better the way they want to chaange SS. What programs and what chages are they talking about? Cmon Tapper move those feet during interviews.
So Rounds and the Dems are in agreement. Make SocSec better! Yay! And then.....he rambled and made "managing" things, completely avoiding Tapper's question about privatization. He succeeded in distracting Tapper who went back to the sunset question. If I were Tapper I would have simply said, yeah I hear all that but will privatization be a strategy? And I would keep asking that question until I had him in a corner.
Rounds said he is in bi-partisan talks about "Managing" the imminent demise of SS -- 11 years. But, he can't talk about those conversations, just that he wants more conversations about the "Managing". Tapper is lightweight, scripted and avoids confrontation at all costs. The complete acceptance of doublespeak in US political shows is infantile to us outside USA.
All you have to do to manage SS is raise the cap on the amount rich people pay into SS.
If members of Congress, for that matter any government official, had to deal with health insurance and retirement you can bet there would be no problem funding either. Better means... take it away or lower it. Have the rich pay their fair share of taxes!!!
My retirement age is already 66 and 10 months. Have people work longer! Receive less! That's their plan.
Republicans have ended pensions throughout the US. We now have 401k plans that lose & lose & do not provide any income to live on. So many elderly have found out their 401k was worthless & they only have Social Security & Medicare.
When he says "managing" he means investing government money into the businesses of their donors and cronies via the stock market. Sounds like 'jobs for the boys' to me, as in - donations to political parties get 're-invested' back into the companies from which they came = taxable write-offs for the companies in the donation but they get their money back into their business anyway.
No plan. Just words.
The wealthy definitely need Social Security. They should pay their fair share.
I don't need a Ponzi scheme like SS in my life. Let me opt out of this financial mess.
If Sen. Mike Rounds is in a “group” discussing managing Social Security, why doesn’t he know any details of how? Why does he have to be the “leader” to provide specifics? Why no discussion of removing the cap on income to provide more funds? Rounds is vague and evasive. Mr. Tapper, you should have held his feet to the fire.
We pay into SS our working days,if they were really concerned about it,don’t you think they would stop giving our tax dollars to all these other countries and make the wealthy pay their fair tax!???
When the question is always about the solvency of SS why does NOBODY bring up removing the cap on SS contributions that benefits the rich who most likely aren't going to need SS in the first place. Having a cap is just like trying to have a National Sales Tax while eliminating the Income Tax, it penalizes the middle-class and working poor who pay more of money as a percentage of total pay. Removing the cap would put BILLIONS extra into SS. We could even find a way to mesh SS/Medicare together and have the basis for M4A.
Because the democrat talking point is. "Hand off social security." So basically we keep it as is. Until the system collapses in 8 years so they can get rid of it for good. Incompetent leadership across the board.
We could easily support Social Security by holding corporation and the rich to paying their fair share of taxes. If they were paying into the federal program, money from them could be used to prop up social benefits and lower other costs in other programs. It's not that difficult to understand.
They may not need it but, the rest of us do.
They're set for life, regular folks aren't and depend on it.
I want to see Mike Lee interviewed!
Mike Lee & Russian Ron ANON Johnson. Johnson wants Scott's plan, but he wants every year.
Lets make it clear social security is not an entitlement it's an earned benefit that people paid into for many years it's the same thing as putting money in a bank for saving for years fact fact fact !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How about lifting the cap that the rich pay into the system. That would be a simple fix. But Republicans won’t ever let that happen. That would be a cost to them and their rich friends
“Make it better” means charge the rich less and give the poor less.
Possibly if congress and the senate WORKED together they could do a whole lot (both sides would have to agree to work together) neither side has been able to get anything done. A lot of us have invested money into retirement plans only to see it implode because of congressional ineptitude.
My plan give unemployment card to Senator Rick Scott and however helping him. Also send them unemployment line.
15.3% FICA tax, evenly split between employee and employer, no earnings cap.
Answer the question! Answer the question! There has never been a cut in defense spending
Thanks for pointing out that military spending are the most bipartisan bills in congress.
The way Congress has "borrowed" the funds is shameful. I don't think anyone has a workable plan currently. Having congress manage anything is a joke.
So that's a yes. A thousand words and he didn't say a thing.
His response: YES!
How about making the super wealthy pay in more.. how about reducing costs by negotiating prescription drug prices.. why are ALL the GOP options on the back of the working class.. this guy is enjoying his free health care and government income.
The Republican party is all bark and no bite on very important life changing issues that real people are living through every day.
That has to be the longest response to a yes or no question in history. But in answer to the question of whether or not Social Security should be on the chopping block depending on who controls congress? The short answer was yes.
We know what their plans are... that is why we are going to get a lot of them back home to their families next time we are standing at a ballot box..
He is talking about privatisation which puts a middle man into the program, not politicians, and what happens during a crash like 2008? Seniors are not protected, nor does privatisation prop up or secure Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, in any way. But puts it at risk. And one factor he does not mention, the American People do not want privatisation of the Social Security Program. That's why their doing damage control now, using double talk, because 70milliom Senior voters have a say 🤔!

B/c people are living longer the gov't keeps raising the full-benefit retirement age. But the extra years of life typically aren't good years. In football it's called "garbage time" b/c the game is already over. For most people health and quality of life decrease dramatically after age 65, give or take a few years. It's immoral to force people to work as long as they possibly can, without dropping dead. You've seen the ads with the happy retired couple enjoying their lives. That couple is in their early 60s. They are not in their late 70s. Life expectancy should play no role is setting retirement age.
Make the wealthy pay Social Security like everyone else and wala, no money issue. The fact the rich don't have to pay Social Security was, is and has always been the problem.
One simple if unpopular idea among the gop (I would guess) would be to raise the income cap on paying into SS. I know the hate the idea of asking the richest people to pay a little more. But raising the age of access just basically making sure a lot less over to use what they paid for. Life expectancy is NOT going up I’m the US -it’s GOING DOWN thanks to the cost of actually getting medical care never mind actually being able to afford insurance that’s 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

This guy needs to quit his government job and go to work for Walmart, the nation's largest employer, and then come back and tell us about his new Walmart retirement plan and how he will use it to augment his social security after they raise the retirement age to 70 to make it better.
IN actual advanced countries, social welfare is funded from general revenue and tax rates designed around that.
Government doesn't fund social security. It's funded by anyone that works through payroll deduction
Senator never answers the question and lies about Rick Scott, and Tapper lets him get away with it.
If the minimum wage was raised from 7.25/hr to $15/hour, contributions from those workers would be doubled. Maybe not a big amount going into the SS Trust Fund, but this should be part of the plan. And wouldnt all those workers love the raise!
Tell us you don't understand economics. Without telling us. Raising the minimum wage. Hurts fixed income individuals the most. The cost of services and goods go up. To adjust to the additional labor, storage, maintenance, and additional production costs.
