The bass solos during the "verses" are the roars of Ktulu!
The misspelled Cthulhu because H.P. Lovecraft's Estate owns the rights to the name. So yeah, Legal Reasons.
Which in turn gave birth to an awesome cultural phenomenon where everyone just started spelling Ktulu/Ctulu/Kthulu/Cthulu/Ktulhu/Cuthulhoo/etc. however they please.
I'd have given them permission, that song compliments the book so well!
In one of letters lovecraft wrote he said that Cthulhu is so odd and out of this world creature that you cant just prounaunce his name right
Our vocal chords are not made for speak his name correctly
Hearing Cliff's bass you can just imagine a gigantic cosmic abomination roaring
Now, keeping with this theme, "The Thing that Should not Be!"
since youve heard the original, i suguest you listen to the s&m version. its what they opened with. its so astounding really
The S&M2 version is awesome too.
Yeah COTK S&M 1 may be the greatest compilation of music I’ve ever heard
@@metaphoria3yeah
Best Metallica instrumental ever with apologies to Orion.
No. Orion is better. This is 2nd.
@@eazye519 No. This is way better.
@@joeynatts6542 nope
@@eazye519 I agree
@@eazye519 imo they’re both equally good, masterpieces.
Was definitely a copyright issue, seeing as the Call of Cthulhu was a book from 1928 about an enormous sea monster/god hundreds of feet high. Head of an octopus, body, part human, part dragon. Basically a Kraken.
Just another example of Metallicas awesomeness when it comes to instrumentals, absolutely fantastic
Ktulu or Cthulhu name isn’t even its real name if I’m remembering correctly no language on earth can come close to pronouncing it correctly so Cthulhu is just the closest mankind can come to pronouncing it correctly. Also love your reactions and the way you break things down definitely earned my sub
“Cliffs’ everywhere” well put
This song has always been on any playlist I had and yes that includes mixed CASSETTE tape songs til now !!!!!!!! 👍🤙 good job man .
the live with San Fran symphony is really good too
s&m was the first metallica album i ever heard. i was in 9th grade.
You need to do "The thing that should not be," which is kind of Ktulu's twin sister song.
Dude, it was really interesting to hear your thought process on the song at the end! Really different from other reaction channels, you actually analyzed the journey the song put you through, really good stuff!
I still get goosebumps at 53🤘🤘🤘
They do make pretty awesome instrumentals. I'm also rather fond of Suicide and Redemption, maybe you'll like it
I really love the live version from the Lyceum Theater in London from 1984
Fantastic review! I recently found classical music and absolutely feel in love with its ability to tell a story through the music. This song has always been one of, if not my favorite Metallica song for a similar reason. Subscribed 👍
The best reaction to Metal that I've ever seen, keep it going brother🤘
idk if u noticed but the intro of the song and the first heavy part is the same riff. the only difference is one is distortion and and muted while the other is clean and not muted. never really knew that until i started playing guitar.
Love the deep dive, not many reviewer’s do this
Yea everytime I hear this it sounds like Cthulhu coming. Imagine the horror and awesomeness of it. Wrapped up in one song.
Watch the documentary Paradise lost about the West Memphis 3. This song is the theme and it is the most haunting film I have ever seen.
This is basically the soundtrack when you summon a big ass deep sea monster lmao
Why they called it Ktulu: n the book The Call Of Cthulhu, invoking the name Cthulhu (verbally or written) will bring the beast closer. Fans speculated that Metallica spelled it "Ktulu" in the song title so as not to conjure any dark forces, but the truth is more pedestrian: "Cthulhu" is hard to pronounce and even harder to spell, so they dumbed it down.. Stil a great song on the album. You should liste to the live version: Metallica: The Call of Ktulu (Copenhagen, Denmark - February 9, 2017). Robert Trujillo is getting beastmode on the base. And ofcourse Kirk Hammett is playing a great solo.
I heard they spelled it different to avoid calling the beast
Daww I like your description of him
Metallica's "The thing that should not be" was also about Cthulhu.
oh man you picked a good one
That was a good fight I can say :) I'm learning solos to this masterpiece since I was 15. Still cannot catch up :) THat was good choice.
Oh yeah-jeah!
(I read once that it was for legal reasons that they didn't name the song after some, Idea of . . . a thing that should not be.)
This is my favourite so far! You know Metallica at this point :D
I think Ktulu was to not get legal ramifications from H. P. Lovecraft. He wrote stories about Cthulhu
Personally I like when you pause often to analyze
Wish you would of commented of the bass growls that are all thorough out this symphony….
It’s all good though
Scooby doo vibes 😂😂
im here because im dave aswell
Lovecraft you say?! Do metallica's 'the thing that should not be*. It's right in the theme
My favorite Metallica song
Cliff Burton was an H. P. Lovecraft fan.
now you gotta hear Hangar 18 by Megadeth to hear the real version of this song by the actual guy who wrote it
edit: just seen you reviewed that too, sick
Thanks for checking haha
@@whatitdodave found myself a new channel to watch, word
i fw your vibes chief
yes
With the symphony it's even better
React to Morbid Angel - Fall from Grace.
No-one's done that as far as I'm aware. I think that is 1991.
you should have reacted to lyric video
😉😉
2:34 ...... I think that might be the Scooby Doo vibe
Call of Kthulu is a book written by HP Lovecraft. Idk if they didn’t use the original spelling because of copyright because Lovecraft is dead. But ya know
I believe there’s a Norse god with the name spelled that way which HPL drew influence from? I could be wrong but that’s the closest thing I can think of. That or it could be a play on the name because of the time they were in. 1984 and they were recording in France near all the......ya know. I mean you don’t necessarily think blizzard winds when you think Cthulhu bc he comes from the sea. But you do think of snow and blizzard winds and evil giants when you think of Siberia and Soviet Russia. These boys were/are damn geniuses and very aware of their surroundings.
Apparently they only changed the spelling to make it easier to pronounce.
They couldn't get the rights from h.p. lovecraft's estate. So they changed it to ktulu instead of cthulhu.
This song is a quest. The S&M version is great too
S&M 1 version!
I answered the call....turns out it was Cliff Burton. Draw your own conclusion😂 🤘🏾🎸🥞👉🏾
HP Lovecraft has been dead over 75 years so his work falls into public domain...his estate freely alows use of his material. There is an entair expands universe on his original writtings. They misspelled it because they wanted to that S all...the band has confirmed that years ago. Legal! Lol
Fun fact...Lovecraft was also a open rasist...look him up lol
True enough but this song is almost 40 years old so it wasn't at the time
Great instrumental but I'm pretty sure Dave Mustaine of megadeth wrote most of this great reaction my friend 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️☮️💯 Orion is there best instrumental
You would be right.
The original is called “ when he’ll freezes over”
This may be the best Metallica jam...but, nothing trumps Master of Puppets.
this is good it should be illegal
King nothing?
Metallicas first four albums were absolutely brilliance. I lost all respect for them when they started suing nine year olds for downloading their music on Napster.
Great instrumental but too repetitive with some parts to really take it to heart. Could've been 2-3 minutes shorter or so.
5 times per beat, easy for anyone to listen to even if youre not into metal. I mean i guess thats why, no?
That solo THO, god damn Kirk
@@absolutinte864 actually, it's Mustaine who made the solo before he was kicked out.
@@datukareemaralling4832 If true Kirk executed this on this recording don't know if Mustaine would have put out the same vibe and energy
Because it’s meant to be like a orchastra in the form of guitars and drums of course it repeats
