Personally I’m not a big fan of Mumble rap. I grew up on lyric verses and story telling bars. But I’m not gonna deny the fact that this new gibberish style has taken over the game.
The first mainstream hip hop song wasn’t about storytelling bars lyrics verses. “The hip hop the hippy”. mumble rap has been around since the beginning
the rappers do talk about real stuff like getting the street hustle or mental health. Like uzis verse "SHE SAID IM INSANE YEA I MIGHT BLOW MY BRAINS OUT"
bone thugs are originators, bone thugs started everything and this is how Develodep Style, Bone Thugs Deserves Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame !!!! Thumbs Up If You Agree
Well the truth is nowadays people prefer having just dope hip hop beats that can make their speakers go boom. Kids nowadays can't care less about what lyrics are unlike people who grew up listening to legends like 2pac,biggie, Eminem and many great Mc's would prefer lyrics and rhyme + melodies over anything.
Nah some of us do care bout the lyrics, but in a different way. Me for example find lil uzis lyrics kinda deep and meaningful after you read their backstories. And i kinda like how he doesn't make the meaning of song so obvious. Ofc to a person who doesnt dig in about these lyrics they can sound weird and unlyrical. But if u really fan of his music u will get it right away. Like for uzis lyrics in You're Lost song he says " I don’t want you back I’m just counting racks the money won’t bring her back and I just want her back" It's much deeper than that, he says that he dont need that girl because he is getting rich, *BUT* at the same time he is getting the money to get *her* but knows that it wont bring *her* back. For me atleast these kinda lyrics hit right back home and can relate easily to them.
But theres nothing wrong with that. Sometimes its not always about lyrics. Some people care about melody, flow, how the rapper uses the beat to make it sound pleasing and "lit" for the listener. Beats play a huge role too. In ASAP Ferg's genius video for Plain Jane he was talking about BPM. And how kids like the fast paced music.
I'd say that a separation is needed, hip hop is the main genre but it's unfair that a rapper can put effort into their lyrics and be overshadowed by a good hook, and people keep on hating on each other As a person who likes bars over anything else, separating the two is important, it's called trap and rap, trap if it's about the vibe/hook/feels, and rap if it's about bars, this way both sides get what they want, no one gets fucked over and everyone is happy That being said everyone can agree on one thing, Fuck lil pump
I love all of hip hop and rap music. I don't give two f's if you're mumbling, spitting some bars, singing, yelling or whatever. If it sounds hot then it's hot to me. I don't get why certain people and hip hop artists want the genre to only be one sound. That's stupid, stale, boring and lame. Music is any form of expression and those are facts.
Juan A. It has progressed. I get that you and others may hate on it. But it's reality and I think you should just accept it and let it rock. There still is music that exists for you to like
Lopez Nickers The point is it's not good. You can't understand them but when you do it's about dumb shit like poppin pills and shit. These type of music doesn't make rap music look good.
Most "mumble rap" isn't mumbling but irregular usage of pitch, cadence, slang, intonation, and pacing. People are to lazy to analyze what makes certain voices sound different and blame it on mumbling. Then, they try to take intellectual superiority as if rapidly rhyming multi syllabic words at the end of phrases takes more brain power than breaking down language and the human voice to its roots to say things in new ways.
To me, if I can hear every word they say, it's not mumble rap. Like 21 was right I can hear what he says so I wouldn't label him a mumble rapper, same with Migos. But Future and young thug sometimes I can't understand what they saying
@FuckingHateTwilight Dude I see you on every video about this topic I'm genuinely stunned. The first time I've seen the same person in so many comment sections. And by the way I have a question, what do you hate more? Mumble rap or Twighlight?
FuckingHateTwilight mumble lyrically wise is the devolution from what hip hop was, but talking about mumble rap. I’m talking about lots of many different and new style type artists that are called mumble rappers when they are not because you can understand everything they say. Mainly trap artists I’m talking about but mumble rap itself isn’t bad either unless it’s pump or xan type shit. Lyrically yes it’s not as good as hip hop was, but lyrically a lot of these people are still a bit more lyrically intelligent than other genres but even when it isn’t they are meant to make up for the lack of lyricism quality with nice flow and melodic skills. Melody is a skill for all genres because it’s what can get stuck in people’s heads or get them singing or whatever. And then flow is the poetry of the delivery of your words. You create a dope sound with these and other factors and work with the beat to make nice flows and melodies and be creative to put together a vibe that will get people in certain moods. It’s meant for simple fun and enjoyment for when you wanna party, bump something hard in your car or wanna vibe out. It’s using the core mechanics of what made enjoyable hip hop music but using those to its most to make an enjoyable sound that people will simply enjoy. Lyrical rap gives substance and meaning while mumble brings fun and enjoyment.
FuckingHateTwilight lyrically it doesn’t take too much skill but you have to be creative and energetic when it comes to flow, melody, sound etc. When you get the nice beat you just have the beat and you need to do something creative and fun over it to make it simply nice and enjoyable. I’m defending both trap and mumble rap right now though because these are meant for enjoyment. If it didn’t take some sort of hip hop or musical skill then half these trap artists or so called “mumble” rappers wouldn’t be relevant and still making it. And the talentless ones have fallen off and people know they’re bad, but those mumble rappers that can actually flow and hype the crowd up well are still around and loved.
This should have its own category or subgenere trap/mumble some shit like that we can't put it in the same category as rappers like Kendrick Cole and etc
YBN Javo that’s because mainstream, media, and radio pushes anything catchy; then control that to brainwash the audience to dumb them down or keep them blind to real artists or what music should really sound like. At the end of the day I don’t like “mumble rape” so I just stick to what I like. I ain’t hating just stating what I think it means.
Hey in all honestly I enjoy both lyrical rap and “mumble rap” my Spotify playlist is a good mixture of both I just can't understand why people can't appreciate the art of both, if I had to put the two in perspective, lyrical rap speaks to us in a clear interesting way (like your having a conversation with someone on an interesting topic or your listening to someone interesting about an interesting topic) while “mumble rap” is more emotional and I feel like it connects with people soulful and emotional (lyrical rap does the same thing as well but I feel like “mumble rap” is more magnified) so don't know why everyone hates it, it's just another sub-genre of hip hop if you don't like it don't listen to it there's still lyrical rap being made these days (and trust me more of it will be in the future) don't act like it's dying or anything. I used to hate “mumble rap” but once I actually listened to the melodies and raps themselves they're actually quite good so I like to appreciate lyrical rap and “mumble rap” equally (even though I like lyrical rap a bit better since I grew up listening to it) they're both really good genres!
21 isn’t a mumble rapper, and the fact that he’s only in 5 seconds of this 3:50 video is proof. Oh yeah and that 5 seconds was from an interview with Breakfast Club:)
Mumble rap is hard evidence that the masses ain't got no taste. This ain't no surprise. People like dumbed down things; music, books, tv shows, etc. I will stay on the classic/lyrical side. The pastures are greener there.
Xigital I think you didn't comprehend my comment. Read again. I said masses like dumbed down things. Music, tv shows and books, for example. Why would people bother reading classic literature or non-fiction (another example), when they can always pick up FSOG or Twilight? Why watch a scientific documentary when you can always keep up with the Kardashians? Why would anyone listen to hip hop lyrics, embedded with deep meaning and substance, when it's easier to just turn up to Migos? Involution I'd call it.
Kurobara Anatanoniwade true, I've never liked hip hop or rap, but when I listen to some of Tupac's hits like Hail Mary and California love i hear a story, dedication and meaning. When I listen to my dumb rich white friends blasting "lil" shit all I hear is "yeah, yuh, ooh!" And other random ass noises with gibberish, they doing this shit for the $ and ain't doing it from the bottom of their hearts
I don’t understand why people hate on mumble rap so much. Music is music, old or new. Lyrical rap isn’t necessarily better by definition. To be entirely honest, it’s often catchier and more fun to listen to. I’ve also noticed a decline in quality in lyricists who start criticizing it; notably Eminem and Logic, both previously top notch but now come across as behind with the game. Love or hate it, this is the new state of hip hop. To all the people who prefer lyrical rap, it’s worth a try. I used to listen to all lyrical rap, but then I started listening to new wave, and it changed the way I look at things.
Rap used to be a respectable genre, not a meme, so this is exactly why i decided to make some well thought out, genuine rap on both modern and old school beats. If you are on the same page with me, feel free to check me out, if you have the time of course.
I think it just depends on the mood b cuz i can go from wu tang clan to migos 🤷🏽♂️ I try to stay open to everything because everyone in our family listens to different genres and I fw all of em.
Just because you love one doesnt mean you have to hate the other...I grew up in the era of lyricism and good content but I still listen to mumble rap if i'm turnin up. And there are still new artists who have bars...for example, Kendrick, Cole, Big Sean, Big KRIT, Joey Badass, Nipsey Hussle, Joyner Lucas, J.I.D., Logic, and the list goes on...if you love bars so much then spend your time researching those type of artists instead of hating on mumble rappers.
Music just like any artform is always evolving and ever-changing, it is absurd to confine an artform into a box and limit people's creativity. Art is supposed to break boundaries by always reinventing itself, let artists channel their creative energy and invent their art, whether you like it or not there is always an audience who will feel represented.
“I said a hip hop Hippie to the hippie The hip, hip a hop, and you don't stop, a rock it out Bubba to the bang bang boogie, boobie to the boogie” Mumble rap has been around since the beginning.
Patdagoat I agree, but one thing is for sure ODB sounds nothing like Bone thugs.. How many of these dudes now sound exactly alike? It's boring when it all sounds the same
I don't like the genre, but that doesn't mean i will shit on other people who listen to it. I do however have a problem with this music being labeled as rap. Rap stands for Rhythm And Poetry, and this genre has no poetry whatsoever, only recurring themes about money, drugs, and women. Rap used to be a respectable genre, not a meme, so this is exactly why i decided to make some well thought out, genuine rap on both modern and old school beats. If you are on the same page with me, feel free to check me out, if you have the time of course.
WOAAAAH BRO YOURE SO WOKE BY PUTTING STYLES OF MUSIC INTO SCENARIOS THAT FIT YOUR WOLRDVIEW BRO MUMBEL CRAP WILL NEVER MATCH OUR BEST LYRICAL SPIRITUAL MIRACLES
I think people need to stop hating on mumble rap because it has actually made rap music more popular. Also, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, Lil Yachty and Future are not mumble rappers. I can understand what they are saying.
There is trap and there is mumble rap, 2 different genres. Mumble rap includes Future, Kodak Black, Desiigner etc. Trap means Juice WRLD, Lil Nas X, Luh Kel etc. People who combine rapping with singing, not mumblimg.
You can jump in the car with me and hear Dave East, Lil Uzi, Mos Def and Future all in one day. I appreciate each artist for who they are and what they bring. I would hate for every rapper to be lyrical. I like variety. The only issue I have is how a lot of rappers sound so much alike. Even so, I'll still bump the artist
I love lyricism and it’s one of my favourite parts of the genre but it doesn’t frustrate that “mumble rap” is a thing and LUV is one of favourite artists. Music isn’t just lyrics, it’s the sound, melody, emotion and more that you get from the song. They’re making music and it’s getting views because a lot of people think it sounds good, what’s the problem?
yeah i prefer lyrical rap/hiphop... coz it's all bout "content" (what is being said), "flow" (rhythm, rhyme), and "delivery" (beat, cadence, tone). how to sing a lyrical sentence "just like storytelling" with fast cadence ,not just repeating the same words or sentence. but i don't know why some mumble rappers could be called as a songwritter even though they only made the lyrics that were repeated again
I don't believe in mumble rap. I believe that they are expressing what they're feeling through vocals and vibes. They're essentially trying to give you a piece of themselves through what how they're saying.
When are old heads going to realize when it comes to trap it's more about how you rap (Flow, Melody, Style, Rhythm, innovation etc.) than what you rap ? Their lyrics are at least solid enough for them to do more service through the song with what I put in the parentheses because they are so good at what is inside those parentheses.
@FuckingHateTwilight not you again.....and if it's that easy then do it. And if you don't think it has any of that look people like thug and future who changed the way hip hop sounded. They introduced these whole cadence driven flows that changed the game and if you listen to it you'll hear nothing but melodies. And almost every artists has a style it's impossible for it to not. This level of ignorance shows you probably listened to gucci gang or a carti song and judged a whole style of music over it.
yeeooo y'all got it all wrong bro. people always be using the term mumble rap for all new school style rap but mumble rap is literally when a rapper raps but mumbles THATS IT. so that would be future, desiigner and sometimes lil yachty. i personally tend to dislike mumble rap because i prefer actually understanding what theyre saying. but rappers like rich the kid and 21 savage are not actually mumble rappers. they just rap with the new school flow which is usually short bars with pauses in between. they dont mumble, so how are they mumble rappers? and people call any rappers that got meaningless lyrics mumble rappers as well but it doesnt necessarily mean that they are mumble rappers because horrible lyricists like lil pump dont actually mumble, and yet they dont actually mumble !! lyrics that arent very meaningful isnt a big deal to me because i sometimes just need a song to turn up to that is simple. so JUST BECAUSE A RAPPER DOESNT SOUND LIKE AN OLD SCHOOL RAPPER, DOESNT MEAN THEY ARE A MUMBLE RAPPER they are just rappers that are using a sound that rap has evolved into ALONGSIDE other genres of rap. And then there is "rappers" like lil uzi and trippie redd. i personally would not call them rappers because they simply just sing with high amounts of autotune and rhyme the last two syllables and call it rap. i personally think this is pop music because it isn't really rap once analyzed and are highly mainstream and most listeners dont even listen to real rap. i think the best way to stop getting oldheads to hate on the new school stuff is if they are classified as two/three separate genres: Trap (21 Savage, Lil Yachty, Migos, etc.) - not very lyrical, trappy beats, new school, sometimes mumbling Rap (Logic, Kendrick, J Cole, Joyner Lucas, Tupac, etc.) - usually lyrical, usually faster rapping, no mumbling Pop (Lil Uzi Vert, Trippie Redd, etc.) - Barely any real bars, just singing just my two cents on how i view the rap industry right now. and btw im 15 ✌
Problem with these mumble dudes are they all sound alike and they are about as charismatic as a cardboard box. You don't NEED to be super lyrical, Waka flocka, Jeezy and Gucci proved it you don't need to be. The reason why old heads don't mind them is because they all had their own sound and character. You could turn on a random song from any of them and know whose song it is almost right away. Now you can turn on a song from any mumble/ new age trap artists and you can't tell who the fuck is who. These same artists are also VERY boring to listen to. It's the same cadence every song, absolutely no energy on any of the tracks. I don't even like six nine and I'd rather listen to six nine than mumble cause he at least sounds different from these dudes out now.
Twistaz I can tell you don’t listen to the new wave of rap much. Most of these people do have a lot of energy behind them and they pronounce their words clearly. None of it sounds the same because it’s all experimental. I can tell you’re just taking a couple of new rappers and applying it to the whole sub category of rap.
Honestly mumble rap is 50% production/mixing, the other 50% depends on the artist. And that's not a bad thing. There are countless, amazing types of lyric-less music like classical, different genres of electronic music, etc. New-wave hip hop combines that with unique traits of artists whether that be mumbling, excessive ad-libs, unique vocals, cloudy melodies and flows, and so on. More producers deserve credit, but mumble rap is my favorite genre. And I was raised on lyrical rap too!
I don't mind mumble rap. It's still a form of art regardless of what people think is "real" rap. Art is always changing, regardless of wether it is well received or not.
Mumble rap is just a generic insult towards newer rappers that actually innovate or do something different than lyrics like melody, flow, etc. Oldheads just can’t stop hating and being blinded by older days nostalgia
There's some songs from "mumble rappers" that I enjoy listening to, but I would never put people like Lil Uzi, Future, or the Migos in the same conversation as artists like Kendrick, Cole, and Joey Badass. The first group are just entertainers to me. Their music is fun and catchy, but that doesn't make it good. I listen to some fun and catchy songs that aren't good. The latter group are artists and their music has a meaning and can be broken down bar by bar. Both have their place. I wouldn't want to listen to Kevin's Heart while I'm partying and I wouldn't want to listen to Ric Flair Drip when I'm chillin and actually listening to the music. Obviously both groups can make music that work for both situations, but the bulk of their music doesn't. This is just my opinion and I understand people have different ears.
how is "1 night" a mumble rap song? - he might be just mumbling in general, like many ATL rappers. And anyway I can see how people critizice this scene because some lyrics, but not all mumbled lyrics are bad lyrics. Some of them would also work if they'd be pronounced correctly. E.g. most of 21's
The way I see it, not everything has to be deep or extremely meaningful to be good or worthy of attention. Sometimes a song is just good even if the lyrics don’t necessarily have some groundbreaking insightful words. If you enjoy rap that is more conscious, that’s great, but you aren’t better than those who aren’t and vice versa.
If these mumble rappers wanna mumble, so be it. Let them have their community. I️ just hate the fans and how cocky they are. I️ hate all the terms like “G.O.A.T.” And how people call others trash and can’t appreciate the classics. I️ want stuff to be real and more like the classics, that’s why Kendrick is one of few new schoolers I️ like. We need more like him in this new generation, to help us remember what got us here. Mumble rap is mumble, not rap. Similar, but not the same. I️ want rap back.
I'm 19 and I value lyricists like Eminem and Tech N9ne rather than "rappers" who mutter words that don't exist and have no sense for rhyme schemes. Am I an old head?
Vislow it's a vibe and feeling instead of rhyming about coffee pots. any madlib, Danny Brown, kanye, brockhampton, Travis album is better sonically and production wise then any tech n9ne album.
I see mumble rap as a parallel to the 90's grunge era. many many artists came and went with one hit wonders or one album wonders but very few had any sort of longevity to their career. i see the same thing here, the new style of making the words more a part of the beat than an actual dialogue of the song will be a trend that comes and goes leaving many with a bank account boost but very few with an actual career.
T.I. made a good point it’s not something that is new but as far as rap goes I think Bone Thugs invented it and I think they should get their flowers while they’re still here
I’m a hip-hop head but I enjoy my fair share of mumble rap for gym time and payday. But there are still plenty of talented bar-spitters out there...but it’s your responsibility as the fan to seek those artists out. You don’t have to listen to the radio anymore...you can control what you want to hear via streaming. So I don’t understand why ppl get so pissed about the Lil’s. Just ignore them!
I see people defending mumble rappers. Sigh. I really don’t have good points about why I hate mumble rap. But I’d also like good points why mumble rap is good. I see people complaining about old heads as well... My rap is more of expressing feelings. But like deep meanings and feelings like logic. I also like Witt Lowry, token and nf where they rap stories about their lives, talk about their problems and a lot of people relate. Their lyrics make a change within a lot of people, and it helps. Whilst mumble rap that I know of is talking about drugs, hoes, money, and famous brand shit and they somehow go famous. Hate comments will come. I also couldn’t be bothered editing this comment to have good grammar (feeling that someone might comment that knowing UA-cam nowadays)
It's high time people stop counting 21 savage as a mumble rapper. FFS you can understand what he says. If you're clear about your definition of mumbling. 😐

Even if there is a form of lyricalism but with drugs, sex, money, materialism, or any of that kind, it's still mumble.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Korey Henderson fuck you mean beats are crazy
7 7 they have bangers but in terms of lyrical content, might as well just not say words & let noises come out their mouths
7 7 That's all they have tho lol
It's funny how hip hop is all about lyrics and words but the community can't figure out a better word than mumble rap
Bro RIGHT!!!! that’s so disrespectful
lmao you made me thinking with this shit lol
LMAO gotta dumb down for you dum fuccers 😭😭😭😭
Well the truth is nowadays people prefer having just dope hip hop beats that can make their speakers go boom. Kids nowadays can't care less about what lyrics are unlike people who grew up listening to legends like 2pac,biggie, Eminem and many great Mc's would prefer lyrics and rhyme + melodies over anything.
vaibhav jain 2pac ain't no legend L
Lean ForKids go listen to dear mama..
MrZampo whatever floats your uzi mate
But theres nothing wrong with that. Sometimes its not always about lyrics. Some people care about melody, flow, how the rapper uses the beat to make it sound pleasing and "lit" for the listener. Beats play a huge role too. In ASAP Ferg's genius video for Plain Jane he was talking about BPM. And how kids like the fast paced music.
I'd say that a separation is needed, hip hop is the main genre but it's unfair that a rapper can put effort into their lyrics and be overshadowed by a good hook, and people keep on hating on each other
As a person who likes bars over anything else, separating the two is important, it's called trap and rap, trap if it's about the vibe/hook/feels, and rap if it's about bars, this way both sides get what they want, no one gets fucked over and everyone is happy
That being said everyone can agree on one thing, Fuck lil pump
trap is also about drugs and sex just like trap houses
Y u gotta hate on pump
@@grizzlyer2200 rap has that too
@@airmurray3901 everyone likes to hate on pump
Trap is focused on every other factor in a song than lyrics and using those factors to make an enjoyable song about stuff fun hip hop is about.
Big facts g
Lopez Nickers Rap wasn't built on that shit.
Juan A. It has progressed. I get that you and others may hate on it. But it's reality and I think you should just accept it and let it rock. There still is music that exists for you to like
Juan A. Rap was created to make people dance and have a great time. So its not far off.
Then, they try to take intellectual superiority as if rapidly rhyming multi syllabic words at the end of phrases takes more brain power than breaking down language and the human voice to its roots to say things in new ways.

this comment shouldve went viral back then😭😭
To me, if I can hear every word they say, it's not mumble rap. Like 21 was right I can hear what he says so I wouldn't label him a mumble rapper, same with Migos. But Future and young thug sometimes I can't understand what they saying
Top 5 & lil yacthy...some songs...
König der Lügner ah I get it
21 is better but its also depends on the lyrics like sayin words like cat mat hat bat
The oldheads will call any one who doesn't get their root of rapping from their times and will actually change and evolve a mumble rapper.
@FuckingHateTwilight Dude I see you on every video about this topic I'm genuinely stunned. The first time I've seen the same person in so many comment sections. And by the way I have a question, what do you hate more? Mumble rap or Twighlight?
@FuckingHateTwilight ok that makes sense
FuckingHateTwilight ok.. what is it?

YBN Javo that’s because mainstream, media, and radio pushes anything catchy; then control that to brainwash the audience to dumb them down or keep them blind to real artists or what music should really sound like. Music is subjective
*I love ALL of Hip-Hop. Mumble Rappers included.*
This video just further proved to me how understanding Kendrick Lamar is.
Like can we just appreciate that for a second?!

Uh yeah no one cares about your opinion

If it wasn't For Mumble Rap Who Would Even Listen To rap In 2016-2021
I love lyricism and it’s one of my favourite parts of the genre but it doesn’t frustrate that “mumble rap” is a thing and LUV is one of favourite artists. Music isn’t just lyrics, it’s the sound, melody, emotion and more that you get from the song. They’re making music and it’s getting views because a lot of people think it sounds good, what’s the problem?
I will never understand how generations that love to listen to James Brown scream I got the feeling 600 times have an issue with anything we do.
yeah i prefer lyrical rap/hiphop... coz it's all bout "content" (what is being said), "flow" (rhythm, rhyme), and "delivery" (beat, cadence, tone). how to sing a lyrical sentence "just like storytelling" with fast cadence ,not just repeating the same words or sentence. but i don't know why some mumble rappers could be called as a songwritter
even though they only made the lyrics that were repeated again
Honestly I don’t like mumble rap but melodic rap is 🔥🔥🔥I still do prefer lyrical rappers like J Cole,J.I.D. And NF
And then there is "rappers" like lil uzi and trippie redd. i personally would not call them rappers because they simply just sing with high amounts of autotune and rhyme the last two syllables and call it rap. i personally think this is pop music because it isn't really rap once analyzed and are highly mainstream and most listeners dont even listen to real rap.
i think the best way to stop getting oldheads to hate on the new school stuff is if they are classified as two/three separate genres:
Trap (21 Savage, Lil Yachty, Migos, etc.) - not very lyrical, trappy beats, new school, sometimes mumbling
Rap (Logic, Kendrick, J Cole, Joyner Lucas, Tupac, etc.) - usually lyrical, usually faster rapping, no mumbling
Pop (Lil Uzi Vert, Trippie Redd, etc.) - Barely any real bars, just singing
just my two cents on how i view the rap industry right now.
and btw im 15 ✌
Twistaz if you can’t tell lil pump from playboi carti then that’s just sad.
The part I like with these mumble rap music is Mix Engineering and Mastering. Compression style fits the genre.

I️ want stuff to be real and more like the classics, that’s why Kendrick is one of few new schoolers I️ like. We need more like him in this new generation, to help us remember what got us here. Mumble rap is mumble, not rap. Similar, but not the same. I️ want rap back.
