    Just sharing a find that maybe of interest to S owners. Protect those Radiators….. !! KTM don’t seek or advertise Rad Guards for the S but they have them on the R…. They fit, they work, get them… there are no after market ones at present as the bike is so new in design. So I tried these and it’s a win!

    Just got a 2024 S model and the tip here was helpful thank you.
    I considered the R or the S, but I sat down and was honest with myself. Number one i live in Europe, there is very limited amount of offroad compared to roads including gravel roads. Secondly how much real offroad do I actually do anymore as I have aged a bit, and being upside down in mud and crap is actually not fun for me anymore.
    I love twisties, backroads, gravel roads and stuff like that. I have a great experience doing so, and that is what I actually needed a new bike for. I do blast through large stretches of road to get to the area I want to explore and enjoy on my limited amount of holiday. So a bike that can eat miles fast, is great on twisties and the occational gravel road was what I needed.
    I needed the S model, and behold I got one.
    BTW Cracking deals on the 1290's now as "everyone" is waiting for the 1390's (with all the new model issues) so if one is in the market for a travel do all the stuff 99% actually do its a bargain for the moment.

    I spent a portion of Thursday night watching this UA-cam video on getting hold of and fitting a pair of radiator guards, the ones that are available for the R version but not seemingly offered open the S. I thought to myself I must get some as with every other bike I have owned the first thing I have done is fitted radiator guards.
    Friday saw a group of us set out at 0615 from Clitheroe for the annual solstice North Coast Run, a 550 mile A road trip to Durness, first time since the first lock down. I imagine my irritation on arrival at Durness to spot this! I must have happened less than three miles or so from the destination as my boot was wet but the coolant level hadn't dropped noticeably.
    So it was time to call KTM RAC assist who only wanted to take toe bike to Perth and the nearest KTM dealer, around 300 miles from my home, fortunately I also has RAC cover via my bank so the same recover agent from Brora came and my SAS is now on the way back to Yorkshire ready for a £200 plus fitting radiator.
    The RAC were OK given I as on the north coast of Scotland on a Saturday - it took a good few phone calls to sort everything and they seemed determined that they had a budget of £150 to get me home! They wanted to send me on a train with all my camping kit and bike kit which I pointed out wasn't;t going to work! In the end I had two and half hour taxi ride to Enterprise in Inverness then a hire car from there home, got back at 11:30 last night.
    If you can find a pair of radiator guards then get some - I'm looking now - probably get the dealer to order a pair of the R ones if they are available. Touratech do some but there seems to be a three week wait!
    I reckon radiator protection should be standard - KTM isn't the only offender GS's come with exposed radiators and for the sake of a cheap plastic moulding so much hassle could be saved!

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  3 роки тому +1

      Ah Bruce,, Mate... That's harsh news. Particularly as you were already looking at the possibility of getting a set of guards. Same here though. I nearly wrecked my rad in the first 2 weeks. Seems absolutely ridiculous they are not making an offering on the debut of the new bike. YET they sell them as standard on the R (which as I said is more off road biased, longer in low gears, possibly ran at lower speeds off-road and higher operating temp - so cannot be holding them back from the S due to airflow surely?). YET do not offer them openly as an option for the S. They may have their good reasons but this should either be shared why, or openly say you can use the R version which also fit!
      Feel for you mate. What a shocker :(
      But definitely wise words shared there mate! All you guys thinking of getting some protection.... don't hang about and take the risk.. Or you may be next.
      Also not sure why I got a couple of thumbs down on that video about radiator guards! lol... :)
      Anyway Bruce thanks for sharing this and watching my short vids! And hope you manage to get another ride in soon mate!
      Cheers

    Enjoying the videos, I'm picking mine up Saturday I've ordered the rad guards for mine but I'm wondering if they may be causing the high speed instability you mention ? By slightly changing the flow and speed of the air? Just an idea to perhaps try it without them to rule that out ? Thanks for the channel.

And reading the forums you’ll come to find that too. I’ll be putting something up soon on the steps so far. Not sure I’ll get to resolve it or even if I do on my bike it may not on others. It’s one of those situations I am starting think 🤔 .. anyway thx again and hope the new coming stuff you find helpful! 🥂

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 роки тому +1

      Hello mate! Thanks for the feedback 👍👍
      Yes I know and researched the other offerings. Personally I think the KTM ones are the best. 100% functional and protection t the rads a lot better in my opinion
      They have a Louvre design so face on there is no part of the rad exposed to flying stones.. also the are louvres meaning fully vented for airflow
      The radguard Aus and the Touratech are mesh type meaning crap will fling on to the exposed parts easily , also personally the mesh Itself covers a percentage of the rad.
      I’m not sure if it has too much impact on raised temps but as I said they seem to work too and people do buy them… but personally nah…KTM ones are well priced, and functionally perfect in my own opinion. Each to their own !
      Hope that helps

    The R is more likely to get stones , rocks and other debris in the radiators because i don't think many people would be taking the s off road because of the Street tires!

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  Рік тому

      Hiya Blaz. That is very true mate! but to be fair the only folks I’ve known to destroy radiators are people on road as they tend to be hit at a higher rate of speed by stones flicked up ahead. Unless your chris birch it’s highly unlikely your gonna throwing a stone up with your own front tyre fast enough.
      As for tyres the R came with Bridgestone A41 which are equally as road biased. I think in some part you can ask or comes with AX41 more off road biased though I agree. Either way a tyre is interchangeable and doesn’t dictate the use of a bike. I’ve probably done more on my S than a lot of R owners ever will and it does it fine. 😎

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  Рік тому

      Ah I see!! Wow.. to be honest you can’t go wrong with either S or R. You need to decide initially why you would by an R and get that closed off first.. a lot of people simply get an R because if it’s looks “big spoked wheels and an eye catching paint job” despite an S being a better choice if truth be told. Is it just for road and touring? Are you going to be “proper off reading” requiring the manual oversized shocks.. or do you really have limited talent like a lot of us where you just do “trails” that is less likely to drop your 20k bike? Or do you simply want limited electronics risk of issues and just want manual suspension for that reason. There are too many things to consider to say either way. It’s all personal choice.. I would still pick the S if I had to choose now.
      I’m not sure if you saw my video already from the library but check it out . It may be useful if not 👍

    Hello Ric !
    I just received mine, and installed them (2 long bolts were provided to replace the short one, which are used with the empty holes, down)
    But once on the highway, at around 120km/h, I heard a plastic sound… I thought I was loosing one… don’t you have the problem ? I don’t know if it moves or if it touches the radiator because of wind pression… not easy to check the area while I’m riding… ;) I tried, tho…
    By the way, something weird happened too : I was going down a mountain, on the road ( with ice and gravels…. ) and motor cuts off for half a second… I watched the screen to see the “Ready to race” animation, just as if the bike did a reboot…
    it was the first time, and happened only once during my yesterday trip of around 400km…. Did you already hear about something like this ? I will call soon my resaler, but wanted some info before…
    Thanks !
    Cheers

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 роки тому +1

      Hello Pierre! You are lucky as I never received any bolts at all. I think when I bought them they were spec for SAR only. The SAR has these as standard so I assume they did no supply bolts. I think KTM now issue them officially for both SAR and SAS? The SAS will need bolts so maybe they now included for SAS. Mine and others also never had bolts.
      I never had a problem with them and nothing to do with wobble at speed. They are solid and do not make a sound at all. I do not know what the sound is that you are hearing. I had wobble before I even installed these rad guards. I reduced and nearly 100% removed wobble issues then added these rad guards. They make no effect at all on stability. My rad guards are fixed solid no movement.
      As for your other experience! that's a very unpleasant experience. I "think" I have experienced something similar myself but cannot for sure confirm how and why it happened. I can only confirm that I was travelling down a long steep incline in mud/gravel (very unstable conditions). the bike did cut out. I cannot remember if I had to start it or it started itself. It did this twice on the same stretch of down hill.
      I was in Rally mode. and the Slip and Slide was set to a crazy 9... Off-road ABS (ie front only). I nearly ended up in the ditch twice in 2 mins.
      I am not sure but it could be that my problem was due to incorrect bike setup and mode settings. It has not happened again. But then again I have not ridden it in those conditions since.
      I will have to test this area out and see if I can determine anything if I get time. So yes I have had some strange experience.. BUT unfortunately NO I cannot say it was the same as yours. (but does sound similar given you were on ICE/GRAVEL which is also unstable ground and going downhill)
      Cheers
      Ric

Then I wonder if they updated this. As everyone is buying the R rad guards since it was known they are a straight fit with no consequence. But for sure at the time of the vid I made nobody was getting them. In fact it gave the dealers the idea to pre order a load of stock as they knew then it be a winner.

    Hello Ricardo,
    Thanks for sharing this.
    Heating was a big problem in the previous S models.
    I'm wondering if that is the reason why it is not "recommended" for the S model.
    Do you know now why these radiator covers are not included in the S catalog parts ? Did you get any feedback from KTM ?
    Did you noticed any increase on the engine temperature after putting the radiator covers on ?
    I also have to say that I agree with you. If they are good for the R model, why they cannot be used in the S model ? It makes no sense, unless there is something else KTM is hiding that we don't know about.... (better cooling system on the R for example)
    For how long are you using the radiator covers ? For how many miles ?
    Thank you :)

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  Рік тому +1

      Hello Joao! Thanks for commenting. These are fine for the S model. In fact they are now an option on the power parts KTM configurator for the S. and come in black or orange coloured guards.
      In 2021 the first of these generations it wasn’t an option. However they fit. No reason at all why you couldn’t use on the S. the simply came as standard fit.
      Cooling is fine and no problems either. I’ve had mine on since new and now have 15000 miles on the bike. And also ran up the temp quite high for prolonged off road low speeds in the summer. Again never a cooling problem.
      Definitely get a set, they are cheap and protect that £600 radiator 🫣🙏

      Totally true 😁
      I just installed the radiator covers on mine and went for a ride on last weekend warm days (27 degrees Celsius) . I saw no change on the heat management for the cooling system. Normal operating engine temperature remained on 80 degrees and the radiator fans kick in at 93 degrees. Exactly the same behavior has before, without the radiator covers 😃.
      So yes, the radiator covers do not affect the engine heating management in any way. And noticed all kinds of bugs and debris on the radiator covers after a 400km ride, which will be all over the rads if the protectors were not there. Definitely a must have 👍.

    Powerbronze are listing a rad product, maybe they will come quicker than the KTM option- www.powerbronze.co.uk/ktm-1290-super-adventure-s-21-plastic-520-kt106.html

    Bought mine £39 delivered , you need to short 6mm button head screws as they never came with them , the brass screw holes are there why aren't they on the bike standard, told my mate he never bothered ? holed his radiator following another mate on his R1 idiot lol its not worth it he's been quoted £290 for a radiator.
    Regards
    Chris

      Fantastic to hear mate.. yep worth every penny.. Particularly as they relatively cheap and OEM. Feel sorry for your mate. That is the 2nd time today I have been updated on somebody's Rad destroyed... poor on ktm for not sorting this at point of sale.. should be standard given the price of the bike.. for trade price they get them a pair much less than £32 retail. They should have included! FFS £290 for one side I am guessing.

      Hey up Derek! Thanks for popping back. Yeah I can see your concern as was my own initially. And I supposed depending on a lot of variables your quite possibly right.
      However these come as standard fit in the 1290R which is more off road focused and will be used in low gears for longer and I assume as a result operate at prolonged higher temperatures. The S being more road biased will generally have more airflow at higher on average speeds. So I can’t see airflow being an issue here.
      If they do affect the engine temperature then they will on the R also. However as KTM fit them as standard on the R then they can’t be that detrimental to the bikes temperature and performance.
      I do 22,000 miles a year in all weather, occasional fire trail (nothing gnarly as I get older). So I need protection. I am also a fast rider so chances are any debris will hit hard. And in the first two weeks I almost wrecked my left Rad.
      The bike is so new there were not any after market options. And given I’m waiting until late this year for accessories I guess any replacement rad I’ll be waiting a while (as they still trying to get bikes made out to sell).
      So so good keeps rads clean and easy to wipe down, bikes doesn’t run any different. Very cheap purchase to protect an expensive crucial part.
      Seem better to be safe than sorry. But for sure I had exactly same thought as you before. Until my near miss . And again just my own personal opinion shared 🍻

      Oh also thanks for the constructive comment on the Akra sound comparison inconsistency. I have now received the correct stainless steel akra rivets (remove my temporary ones) so will be doing a full consistent sound comparison regarding the stock and akra. In that same vid I will be doing a full demo on how to take the can apart and remove the killers. Which will be a little more helpful than the after thought slide show I first posted up. ☝️👍

      No need? Just had to be recovered from Durness thanks to a holed radiator - every need!
